I love running in these, but I've tried them twice with the same results: Both pairs tore on the upper outer sole area after 200mi. I definitely supinate, but my Torin 4s withstood 500mi without a sign of tearing in the same way. Thank goodness for my fantastic local running store that replaced them straight away! Maybe the new Torin 5s have fixed this issue?

I've owned a few pair of Torins and honestly trying them on they felt great, but I noticed my foot was t to push out the side when running ning. Upper has complete tore apart. Very disappointing.

I can say that I have been running in Altra Torin shoes since the 3's. They are by far my favorite line of Altra shoes. Unfortunately, as much as I like the fit and the feel of these shoes through each iteration, the quality continues to decline. I have now had 2 straight pairs of Torin 4.5 shoes that have ripped in the same spot on both shoes of each pair. They rip right below the logo from the sole of the shoe. I have fairly narrow feet and do not supinate much. Both shoes of each pair ripped in the first 200 miles.

Have been using Altra'sTorin 4 which seems to have been phased out. Am very disappointed. Will return the Torin 4.5 and look for something else.

Some context here. I'm 5'10" and 200lbs. I am not a trained or maybe even a natural runner. I have also had a hip replaced. I offer these as factors and context for my review. I do it because I enjoy how it makes me feel. I'm not setting any land speed records. I don't know that I have shoe vernacular down, so I'll do my best as offer pictures to corroborate or offer visual proof of my verbal ineptitude. I bought these at the end of December 2020. As it's Chicago, I didn't use these as much until probably around mid-January (2021) due to snow/salt. I use Wahoo as heart monitor/mileage. Around the 275-mile marker, I noticed a thinning on the outside portion of the right shoe just below the toe pinky area. By 300-mile marker, there is a substantial hole (see image if interested). Again, I didn't have any expectation that these shoes would last forever. I did think, maybe hoped, they would last longer though. PRO: comfortable, felt secure with no internal foot slipping, my hip enjoyed them. CON: it seemed like the material was too thin where the sole met the actual shoe (< --is that what's considered the "upper?"). I would recommend but with the caveat that it seems to break down seemingly quicker. PERSONAL OWNERSHIP: As I said, I'm not a trained runner, so I could be running incorrectly. I'm not a light guy. I live in Chicago with snow and salt. I tried the 10.5 but it felt too sloppy.

The toe box could be wider, otherwise the shoe is good.

I am down to my fourth and last pair of Torin 4.0 so I had to buy the 4.5 since the 4.0 was discontinued. I tried them on, the sole offers the exact same great feeling as their older brother, but the width is not the expected one. I am looking at the bulge made on the side of the shoe by my side of the foot underneath my pinky toe. It's clearly visible, and I am concerned this is where it will start ripping. A good thing they don't have a firmer side for toe protection because they would not have fit. I will give them the benefit of doubt of course, but I have the feeling I am not going to get the mileage I got from the 4.0 .

Im on my third pair of Torn 4 and it is the best shoe I've had in 30 years. The 4.5 plush is almost a great shoe. The extra 2mm feels great on my feet especially in winter when my runs are frequently on hard surfaces. This shoe is low volume especially in the toe box and just shreds my feet. Blisters on top of and between my toes. Almost wide enough but needs more hight. After 150 miles will have to discard. Hopefully the Torin 4 will return or fit will improve. Will have to look elsewhere for a road shoe. The Lone Peak 5 still works great for me.

I love Altras, but the latest TORIN 4.5 PLUSH is much too tight throughout the midfoot area. The heel and toes are ok, but someone's misguided effort to tighten the midsection went waaay overboard! Please fix!!

Bought a pair of Torins and loved them but they immediately developed an annoying squeak in the sole. I sent them back for a new pair and the second pair squeaked too. Very comfortable but I can't stand the squeaking!! Might be a design flaw in the tread.

full disclosure, I don't run. I am a man who likes a wide toe box or else I get Morton neuroma. The Torin 4 plush was my previous model. They were ok. The 4.5 is too tight across. Im trying to loosen the laces but then my foot goes all slippy in the shoe. Looking for the happy medium but I fear these are going back home to Altra.

For those of us who love Altra's for their wideness (among many other reasons), this shoe is a bit disappointing. Now, to preface: my feet are fairly wide, but not so wide to the point where I have to go out of my way to buy EE shoes. When I first tried this shoe on it felt amazing. It has a bouncy, cushiony lower that seemed perfect for daily training or long days. Fast-forward a couple of miles into my first run when my feet have swelled up a bit... the upper is quite tight in the mid/forefoot. This problem is further compounded by the fact that the upper has absolutely zero stretch. To mitigate this I've had to stuff towels in the shoes to stretch the upper to accommodate my feet. Even with my uppers properly stretched out, I would still appreciate a bit of stretch in the fabric to accomodate feet swelling throughout a run. If Altra took the upper of the Escalante 2.5 and strapped it to the lower of the Torin 4.5 I would take 10!

Version 4.5 provides better cushioning and lateral support over my regular Tourins, which fit great. However, the 4.5 has less foot volume (4.0s had same issue; returned) and I had to remove the insole to get a comfortable fit. I like to run sockless so will get thin insoles because I like the shoe otherwise. All my other Altras fit fine so there is something different about the Plush's design.

First, I am 6'3", 180lbs mid 40s male running year round at no race base of about 25 miles a week. I have until recently exclusively run in Altras since the first Torin and Escalantes. I switched from Torins after 2nd or 3rd versions were awful. Ran in Escalantes for years until the 2s. Those had to go back. Altras tomfoolery forced me to TOPO Magniflys (not bad). I had a friend say try the Plush. I have to admit, they felt great. Long run cruisers for sure. But they started squeaking at 350 miles. Bad. Like I can't use them for casual wear they squeak so bad. Crazy. The upper and tongue specifically is warm. Too warm for long runs in Florida heat. Make them breath better and not squeak and I will buy them again. These were not a repeat buy for me.

Help! My toes aren't used to being this close! They want the room that used to be in the previous models!

I've had a number of Torins and they've been my favorite shoe for a while however my most recent pair squeak really badly. I've tried using foot powder and a dryer sheet but it's an issue inside the sole of the shoe which is really frustrating. Otherwise these are great, they look good, I've found the upper to be comfortable and the width fits my feet very well but I'm not sure I can recommend them otherwise.

Will not accommodate orthotics of any type. Smaller in size and width and inside cushioning is lacking. Would not purchase again. Torin 4.0 were much better.
I'd also recommend:

I'm a 59 yr old runner who has running many marathon in the past 30 years. In the last 5 years I have been focusing in on ultras. I have challenging feet (Bunion and Morton's) and was concerned about my ability to continue to engage in any type of running. I have run in Asics, NB and Brooks over the years. I stumbled upon Altra and have now run in Escalate, Olympus, Timps and Torins. The wide toe box was such a relief that I continue to run...50-70 miles weekly. The Morton's is the reason that I moved to the Torin Plush. However, the new 4.5 seems to be slightly tighter in the toe box and the height also seems to have decreased. I thought it was just a 'new' shoe and that it would stretch out, however it has not. I am disappointed and will now be scouring the internet for 4.0's in my size. This unfortunately seems to be a trend with a number of models and I have noticed other individuals have noticed the toe boxes tightening. I really like zero drop, I like the wide toe box. The Plush 4.0 is the best shoe I have every run in. I believe the 4.5 is a great shoe overall but if the toe box narrows further, what is the point? Please change this back to the size of the 4.0. If it is not broke, why do you need to fix it?

Returning these. Getting hotspots on the left shoe. I put my hand inside the left shoe and felt material loose. On a different note, I bought the Olympus 4....10 stars

I like this shoe and wear it to work each day. it's comfortable and reasonably stylish and I like the extra cushion level. Unfortunately after about 5 weeks a strip of the sole came loose and I had to tear it off and maybe it can be super glued back in place. But I have a desk job and very low miles on this shoe. This shouldn't happen.

Comparing the torin 4.5 to my Escalantes I can tell that the Torins are about a half size smaller and the toe box on the Torin is narrower. I will have to return them and order a larger shoe.

This shoe felt good when I initially tried it in the store. I took it home with me and on my first run I noticed the creasing above the toebox pinching down onto base of my toes. After investigating this a bit I realized that it is coming from the overlays around the eyelet chain on the shoe. It is a hard material that does not break in. After a couple runs in these I had to return them because it was too distracting. The Torin 4 does not have this problem but I wish it had the 28mm stack that the plush does. Altra please go back to making one version of the Torin with a 28mm stack and a comfortable upper like the Torin 4 has.

First of all, Altra is almost always my preferred go-to running shoe. Having run primarily in Escalantes and Torins, the fit is generally consistent, works well with my foot shape/size, and are comfortable. But lately, I'm finding a lot of the internet criticism to be sadly true: namely, that Altras are getting narrower. Having consistently run in a size 11, I had to reorder the Plush 4.5 a 1/2 larger after noticing my feet were up to the edge of the toe box. Even with the larger size (which did improve the fit a lot), the shoe started to break down considerably after 150 miles. First, holes began to appear on the insides of both shoes near the widest part of the foot next to the big toe. More recently (around 225 miles run on the shoes), huge 4-5'" tears appeared on the outside of both uppers along the sides. I've never experienced this kind of wear on Altras before, nor any pair of running shoes for that matter. And this all occurred with under 250 miles run on the shoes. If I had to guess how these holes formed, I'd wager that it has a lot to do with the fact that the uppers don't shed moisture very well. My shoes are constantly drenched in sweat and never really have the opportunity to fully dry. An improved, more breathable upper along with a more generous toe box would go a long way to restoring my faith in Altras. Despite these considerable complaints, the shoe is incredibly comfortable without being heavy, too mushy, or clumsy. It's a great running all around shoe.
