My foot is a little wide but not wide enough to merit buying a wide shoe. So the fit was a little tight for me but after the breaking in period and keeping the laces a bit loose, the fit is great.

This is just an initial review since I have only had the shoes for about a week.... I traditionally wear a 9 1/2.... but this size was too short.... went up a 1/2 size to a 10 and they pretty much fit perfectly. I do a 5+ mile desert hike every day. The Altalights were broken in within the first couple of miles and I now have at least 40+ miles in them. hiking in 100+ temps, the shoes breath nicely, so no uber sweaty feet. The terrain is dirt, gravel, grass fields & asphalt. My initial reaction is overall a pretty nice shoe thus far, firm sole gives solid traction, just enough cushion so that you feel the terrain but not an oversized stone, and very light. Walked through an AZ monsoon (rain) the other day, feet stayed dry. Let's see how they are at 500 miles....will do a follow up review then.
I'd also recommend:

I'm a TRUE Merrell fan. They are the 1st brand I look to for a quality shoe. This shoe lived up to everything...EXCEPT the traction. I bought these for work in the winter and wish I had known the traction was as poor as it is because I would have sent these back. There is NO traction on snow and or ice. If I want to wear these shoes, I have to pack them to work and change them out with a different pair that has better traction on the winter conditions. Love the shoe, but useless in the winter!

Lightweight, excellent tread and waterproofing. Have been wearing them in the snow and have been happy! Fit slightly bigger then expected.

At first wear this pair was a fit. Comfort beyond compare and an aesthetically pleasing design, I knew immediately I had made the right choice. To be certain, they've carried me through the elements and have executed every demand. Grip, comfort, support, breathability. Need I say more?

The most comfortable and light weight hiking boots I have ever brought. I absolutely love wearing them. I wear my boots for hiking and cross-training workouts.

Merrell did a fantastic job designing and building these Altalights. I'm certain you'll not be disappointed in the comfort, fit, stability, and grip afforded to your travels by this investment.

Just took my first short hike in these today. Very comfortable out of the box. Toe box is pretty wide, but good ability to lock in the heel. Feels like sneakers with extra support around the ankles. Light weight. Can't comment on the water proof protection yet. The sole was good, but not as sturdy as some of my heavy backpacking boots. This is a very good boot for day hikes and light backpacking.

I've worn Merrells for decades...best boot I've ever used...150 miles later. I used to get "4-mile feet"...I've gone 7 with no discomfort..... decent sole in southwestern mountain hiking. thoroughly enjoyed these in the last 4 months.
Taking them on backpack in Ansel Adams wilderness in 3 weeks.

Purchased these because of a hiking destination of the Arches National Park in Utah. They were wonderful. Never been on any long hikes before, but we put in almost twenty miles over the two days and it was rugged. The shoes were appreciated. My feet did not blister, I felt light-footed, and was able to safely manage my way up and down some difficult paths. One pathway required walking in and out of a stream; never slipped, feet remained dry.

I have not yet trekked in the woods with these boots. I have been wearing them out on walks (4-7 miles) through my neighborhood. The boots are light and very comfortable. I have not had any discomfort while wearing these boots and look forward to hitting the trails later in the year.

These boots are some of the most comfortable boots I have worn. There was virtually no time needed to break them in. I went on a 4 mile ruck the first time wearing them and my feet felt great afterwards. For a period of time before receiving these I was having problems with blisters and hot spots, but the Altalights seem to be the fix I needed. Also they are so light they almost feel like basketball shoes but at the same time provide great protection. They protected the bottom of my feet gear when walking over rocks and gravel. As long as they prove durable, these will be my primary boots for field work and rucks.

These boots are awesome. Fits true to size and very comfortable. No break in time, they felt great straight from the box. What ever their using for the midsole feels good under foot. I've worn them for 2 weeks now and the only bad Things I can see are that the piece of rubber that curls up from the bottom onto the front of the toe box will come unglued like all shoes made that way. And that the waterproof tag on the side got snagged on something while working in a attic (hvac work) and almost ripped out. Still I'll probably buy another pair to have when these bite the dust, that's how comfortable they are. The water proofing seems to do well, feet haven't been wet after walking in a couple rain storms. Would definitely recommend giving them a shot as a light hiker/ work boot.

I wear these almost every day, hot or cold, and they're just as comfortable as they were on day 1. If you're on the fence, do it.

I am a newbie when it comes to backpacking and trail hiking as a civilian. I bought this pair and I have used it on the local trails near me and they preformed excellently! I'm happy to have these and can't wait to use them even more in the future.

Awesome boot that feels broken in on the first wear. Crazy light and flexible, doesn't feel like a boot at all. Got these in 12 I usually wear 11.5 in addidas these fit perfectly.

I've had these boots for a couple of weeks now and they have held true to my expectations. Great for field studies, hiking, climbing around on boulders, and really anything else you could think of. I will buy another pair when or if these wear out, and I would recommend you buy a pair as well! They grip well and are extremely comfortable, even for wide feet!

This is my first pair of hiking boots. I did plenty of research prior to making my choice and glad I did. This boot is exactly what I was looking for. The lightweight and flexible design is absolutely perfect. Thank you for a great product, Merrell!

My last pair of Merrell boots lasted me five years of manual labor, travel and east coast winters. Happily replaced them with these and they're perfect. Great combination of light weight and sturdy, and waterproof! Thanks for making a great product y'all.

Love these so much. From the style and practicality to the comfort these boots are first class. I have used them already for pounding the pavement and on trails and my feet are happy. Haven't had too much of a chance yet to test the waterproofness but I will. The bottoms are a little stick on wet concrete but I'm hoping that will improve with more wear.

Was looking for a pair of light weight but supportive boots to work in yard and shop on the weekends. By far the most comfortable boots I've ever owned right out of the box. Awesome support with all day long tennis shoe comfort. Another great Merrell product!

I love Merrell products, but this is the first shoe to really hold my narrow foot without need for insoles. I really appreciate the double lace at the ankle which provides greater stabilization. Both these features combined with the light weight make for the best hiker to date.

I bought these boots for three-season hiking in the Midwest. The break in period was brief--I only wore them around the house for a couple days prior to the first hike. They have been very comfortable, light, and stayed dry in spite of sloppy conditions and a 2 year old on my back.

I have been wearing hiking boots for around 50 years (im 55), and in that time I have always done the following with new boots:
Put the new boots on, tighten them as much as I could, and re-tighten every mile or two until they stop stretching and mold more to my feet. I have done this with every pair of boots (including my Moab II's which I have hiked hundreds of miles in...).
That said, I tried the same procedure with these. I put them on (they fit perfectly) and laced them as tight as I could, expecting them to loosen. That didn't happen! They stayed just as snug the whole time. In fact, I had to loosen them up some.
The exoskeleton mentioned in the description is real. It affords much more support then any other boot I have worn, at lighter weight. If you look at where the lines of the exoskeleton cross, this is exactly where I felt the most support. Especially in the arch and ankle areas.
In fact, it was a little too much support, thus, I had to loosen them up and wear them that way. Looser than a "legacy" boot, but still plenty of support.
I am used to wearing my boots tight. But for once I have met my match. These provide the same or better level of support, but at much reduced tension. Thusly, they are more comfortable.
When you buy a pair of these, don't over-tighten them! It felt a little weird for me (it still does) not to sinch my boots down tight. No. Just apply light tension and be rewarded with max comfort. Previously unknown to me.
The exoskeleton is very flexible in torsion, but not in stretch. That is the key to understanding these boots.
This is a new thing, and it takes new ways to use it to get the max benefit.
Hopefully this technology will find its way to backpacks and other gear. I will but it when it does.
Also, don't be put off of the "waterproofness" of these. They are just as cool to wear, but still keep your feet dry (internally and externally). Plus the waterproof version are made of ripstop material. A bonus as far as I'm concerned.
