Customer Reviews New Balance Made in US 990v5

I read a review of the new 990 v5 on the New Balance website that said these shoes are short. I ordered a half size up based on that advice and they were too big. I should have ordered my regular athletic shoe size. This new version of the 990 does look a bit clunky. However, it feels comfortable and has a roomy toe box. If you have wide feet or bunions this shoe should work well. It is difficult for me to find shoes wide enough across the ball of my foot while narrow enough not to slip on my heel but these work. I have Morton’s Neuroma, metarsalgia, bunions, and rheumatoid arthritis in my feet so finding a comfortable, supportive shoe that is wide enough is a challenge to say the least. The 990 v5 also accommodates custom orthotics beautifully. I love that these shoes are made here in the United States. I wear Brooks a lot because of the cushion and wide toe box, especially the Adrenaline and Ariel. I suspect that 990 v5 will hold up better for not a significant addition in price.

The toe box is long and only just wide enough for me--I do not have wide feet. There is a ton of padding in the tongue, which is also long, and around the ankle. The toe box is somewhat tapered so the end result is quite an odd look, although the design of the shoe is very nice. I really don't like the lack of arch support. I don't feel enough cushioning in the soles. Maybe that's what "energizing cushioning" means. I don't know. The tapered toe puts pressure on the outside of my toes.The insole is very thin. I hate having to spend additional money and thought on adding my own better insoles. So although I really like the navy/silver, at this price I'm going to return them because I don't want to take a chance. If they had better arch support I probably would have kept them. I've tried several pairs of New Balance recently and struck out on all of them, for many different reasons. These do have a good differential for me, at 12mm, unlike the foams, which are only 4mm. I wish they had worked. If they'd been what I needed I would have happily paid the price. Back to the drawing board. Very grateful for Zappos service.

I ordered the extra wide due to severe bunions on both feet. These shoes have a wide toe box which is difficult to find. They fit nicely across the base of my toes, accommodating my bunions without pain. My heel usually slips in an extra wide as I have an average heel. My heel slipped a bit in these but not enough to be too bothersome. I also have Morton’s Neuroma, plantar fasciitis, and arthritis in my feet. These shoes did not have enough cushion for these foot problems. The arch support and stability were just okay. The insole is removable and custom orthotics fit well. These shoes are heavier than average and bulky. They run true to length. I ordered these and the Brooks Ariel. I had planned to keep both as I like to rotate my shoes but ended up sending these back because of the lack of cushion and bulkiness. I just don’t think they are comfortable, with the exception of the roomy toe box, and at this price point there really should be no compromises. I love that they are made in the U.S. and so really wanted them to work out.

Very comfortable shoe. I have 10 pairs in most colors. I got these to help with Plantar fasciitis and thanks to these shoes, I live pain free. These are the only shoes I wear and my feet never hit the bare floor. Thanks for finally making a WIDE option again New Balance! LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE SHOES!!!

These shoes are super comfortable, except for one thing. The tongue is soooo long that it sticks into my leg above my ankle. It's super annoying after an hour or two of wear.

The fit was excellent. As expected from a quality usa made product. Ordered to fit my foot none of this half size stuff it fits your foot as the correct size should. I ordered it a size wider than normal because I wear a thick running socks and orthotic insert. All is good. This is my third pair of 990's the new version fits like version 4

I feel like Little Bo Peep. I'm hoping the third one is JUST right. I love them and want another pair before they discontinue them (yeah, you NB) The first pair I ordered (8B) was too short. Returned. The 2nd pair (8B) were long enough but too tight. Returned. So, I tried a wide (8D), and my feet were swimming in them. Returning. Non-standard manufacturing. So I'm going to try another 8B and see if the THIRD pair of 8B's are just right. I shouldn't have to buy a shoe in the same size 3X to get a pair that fits.

These fit perfectly in my correct size of 6 1/2 wide (D) width. I have bunions and plantar fasciitis, so I have tried many (thick) comfort shoes. I had New Balance 928 shoes in the past, but the rollbar just didn't hit my foot right at all, and I'd have pain on the outside edge of each foot. I decided to try these, as they are more for a neutral or average arch, (which I have.) They are wonderful for (firm) support...I can wear them all day. They also have cushioned insoles, making them comfortable. I would highly recommend them if you have problem feet and can't wear many women's shoes. I'd also like to note that my toes and balls of my feet are wide, but my heels are medium, and these fit fine...a tiny bit of heel slippage at times, but the shoes stay on and are comfortable. I appreciate sites like Zappos.com, with their quick, free shipping, and free returns, because a 6.5 D in a supportive shoe can be very hard to find in stores.

This version 5 is my favorite pair of sneakers ever. I have two version 4 which are also very comfortable. For summer and lightweight socks I order my usual size but B width rather than narrow and there is plenty of room for toes with great fit around ankle. For winter I have ordered 1/2 size larger to wear the V 4 shoes with heavier socks. This shoe gives me a lot of all around support. They look great too!

I bought the 990v5 because I loved the 990v4. I wore a size 8 in those so I tried an 8 in these but they were too short so I went to an 8.5. At first they seemed to fit well but after a couple of weeks the cushioning has compressed and my feet feel like they're swimming in these shoes. I'm very disappointed because this is a great shoe when it fits.

Comfy and modest shoe. Quickly has become my favorite shoe I wear.

These shoes fit perfectly right out of the box. I wore them for a walk and to clean up the yard - 4-5 hours and still comfortable. I broke my ankle several years ago - three bones - and had a repair and it will hurt if shoes are not supportive enough or don't fit properly. No problem with NB 990v5 or v4. Have both and plan on taking them on a walking tour in Spain.

This is a great shoe. I needed a comfortable nice looking shoe that I could wear for many outings and I found it in the New Balance 990 v5. I’ve been wearing the v4 & was extremely happy with the changes in the v5. The v5 has a soft comfortable orthotic type insert that is perfect for my pronated wide feet. This shoe supports your foot and ankle so that walking is fun & not painful at all even if you have a sprained ankle like myself. I highly recommend this New Balance 990 v5 shoe. It is well worth every penny.

The fit is great on these shoes, the first 990’s I have purchased, but I have worn New Balance for years, just returned 1540, a wee bit too controlled. These are very comfortable and I wear all day, not a runner, but a walker with my dog. The arch is not as much as I normally have with my other New Balance, but it is still comfortable and my feet feel fine when I take them off. I do have plantar fascitis and bunions and a wide foot, no problem there. My reason for not having straight 5 on rating, is the tongue keeps sliding down, and is bothersome, used the little holder on the tongue, even tried old pair of bubble shoe strings. If anyone has an answer, please share!

These are terrible shoes. They are incredibly heavy and offer minimum arch support. They also cut into the top of my ankle. I ran with them once and it was the longest run of my life.

The fit, feel, look and quality are excellent for me, especially for my left foot with a bunion. The toe box is roomy. I only wish they came in white, too!

One of the most comfortable shoes I’ve bought fresh out the box. Was kinda disappointed that the original shoebox got damaged, but Zappos sent me a replacement and that’s okay. I plan on using these for casual use. I have flat feet that are pretty narrow, so I just got my true size (10D) and they’re perfect! Can’t wait to wear these out. If you’re on the fence about these, don’t be. These shoes are great for anyone and you won’t regret them.
