I needed a low top hiker for hiking in the Alps mid July and tried several brands in stores and from Zappos. I had never hiked 10 plus miles each day for 5 days in a row with 4000 ft elevation gain and loss, so went with this Hoka because of it's extreme cushion even though it's not a hiker but a trail runner. I also bought and took with me the North Face Ultra 110 GTX. I wore both shoes on different days and liked both for different reasons. The Hoka's felt cushiony but not as secure around my foot on the loose scree or the steep downhill. The North Face felt more secure, especially on loose trail, but my feet felt more achy during last couple of miles of day's hike compared to the Hoka. My toes jammed into the shoe box on both Hoka and North Face on the steep descents, giving me 1 black toenail and blister, but only on my slightly bigger left foot. I think if I could only take one shoe I would choose the North Face for it's stability and more secure fit.

Normally I can't wear Hoka because their toe box is too narrow for my feet. However, the toe box on the Stinson ATR 4 is as wide as my Altra shoes. I have no neuroma pain when I wear these and the cushioning is great. They are very comfortable and have good arch support. The soles are very grippy on the trails. I wore them during a 25K I recently ran and they performed very well and my feet felt great. I'll be wearing them during my upcoming 50K, too.
I'd also recommend:

I am so glad I ordered these. I was afraid to after I saw the one review with only 1 star. They have a wide toebox, which is what I need. I find that the heel feels normal like any other shoe. It does not rub up and down like the other reviewer said. I have worn them walking inside and outside, as well as doing my workout and they are perfect. I highly recommend them if you like your toes not to be scrunched into an athletic shoe. I chose he grey with fushia trim, but it was hard to pick between the colors. They are all great.
I'd also recommend:

Imagine someone told you that your foot pain would disappear, the only catch is that you must put the ugliest shoes on the planet on your feet. Last year I was in constant pain, walking 14+miles a day for my job. I have a bunion on one foot and at the end of the day, it felt like someone had stuck an icepick in the side of my foot and wouldn't remove it. I can wear these all day without thinking about or feeling my bunion or any pain in the ball of my foot. Hooray! I've always worn a 10 in athletic shoes and my other Hokas are a size 10 and these guys feel like wearing clown shoes until you get used to them. If you have footpain, consider giving these a try. I can't imagine running on trails in these as they are designed to do, if you want to do that try the Hoka Speedgoat. If the soles on these look too intimidating or if you look at these and see a rolled ankle in your future, try the Hoka Speedgoats. Did I mention these are ugly?

Like so many others, I have been wearing Hoka One One for years. What are they doing?? This shoe lacks the cushion I expect from Hoka. I used to wear Bondi's - moved to Stinson 3. I actually put a Stinson 3 on one foot and a Stinson ATR 4 on the other. The 4 was so hard!! I thought I could buy cushioning inserts but I should not have to for $160. Sending back. Thanks Zappos for having such a great return policy.

For such expensive shoes I expected a lot more out of these. I have plantar fasciitis and was recommended this brand by my podiatrist. The Stinson ATR4 is the version I bought. My complaints are that the toe box is unnecessarily big - causing them to look clownish. Something about the structure of the shoe causes me to put more weight on my heels which doesn't help my heel pain and makes my knees sore if I do a lot of walking. And the biggest problem ... despite them costing $160, the fourth time I wore them as I tightened the laces one of the lace holes just ripped through. Cheaply made! I don't know what all the hype is about this brand but I will never buy another pair of Hokas.

I absolutely love these shoes. I read a review that said how ugly the shoes were. I think they are really cool and love the way they look. I've had some foot problems over the past few years. I have two very young Husky dogs that insist on going hiking/walking at least three times a day. These shoes are a life saver for me; it's like walking on clouds. I cannot say enough great things about these shoes. I almost want to buy another pair in fear they will not be made any longer after I wear the pair I have out. I walk 6 miles 5 days a week with my dogs, so the miles are piling up.

I have feet that have alot of issues and I have been limited to sneakers for many years. I had never bought this brand before but tried them on in The Marathon Store and they felt pretty good. They did not have a good selection so I went on line and bought a pair. I LOVE THEM! I wear my sneakers from 7 am till bedtime like 11pm I walk almost 3 miles a day. I am not a runner but have found over the years that running shoes give the most cushion at the ball of the foot and good arch support. These sneakers are so very comfortable and reasonably priced. I've worn Nike's for years which do not come in widths but I bought them for $200+ and got tired of paying those high prices and still not being 100% comfortable. I fully recommend these sneakers especially if you are a runner I can see the advantage. The only thing I would like to see is a few more "loud" colors. My sneakers are my shoes. I wear them with suits and all work clothing as well as jeans. I love to get compliments and I tell people these are my dress shoes!

Very disappointed to say Hokas just are not what they were. The roomiest toe box in the world does someone with a bunion no good if the eyerow compresses the big toe. Pictured on the bottom (acid yellow/red) is my Hoka Constant 2 - a fantastic running shoe that Hoka no longer makes (Why? Who complained? Every review I ever read was praise only). :/ Super comfy, roomy toe box, great support. *Sigh* Note that there are only 4 eyelets on the eyerow of the Constant vs. 5 on the top shoe (grey/purple Stinson ATR 4). This 5th row of eyelets falls just over my right toe bunion and pushes into it (painfully). I can’t possibly consider running in these. I tried the Hoka Arahi as well, and that shoe was worse, as its toe box is significantly narrower. Thankfully, this last pair of my Constants (I had the foresight to purchase 2 while they were still around) have some life remaining, but I am disappointed that I’ll have to look to other brands now for runners unless Hoka returns to a shorter eyerow model with a roomy toe box. I’ll keep checking back. I hope they can come up with some better color schemes as well. The mostly grey/light grey/even white with bright fun color combos are swell, but solid pink, orange, etc. is garish and hard to work into the wardrobe.

This is the fourth pair of Stinson ATR4 I have bought. I’ll cry when they are discontinued, so I bought 4 pairs. They have a roomy toe box, so they are perfect for running long distances on trails. The toe box is as roomy as my Altra shoes, but with better arch support. They have great traction and they drain and dry well. The sole is wide and I have found that it’s very helpful when running downhill. I’ve never rolled an ankle when running with these. If you like Altra trail running shoes, but want better arch support (all over support, actually) and non-zero drop, try these. You will most likely love them.

These shoes are great for my plantar fasciitis. I added orthotics on top of the existing insoles, loosened the laces, and they are amazingly comfortable and effective. I do believe my times have improved due to the extreme rocker and ability to push off, especially on trail runs. I have wide feet and the toe box is ample even with thick socks. After putting 400 miles on my original Stinson ATR 4, I immediately ordered another pair exactly like my first ones because they have been exceptional shoes for training and racing off-road or on. My only problem is that the waffle on the last wears down too quickly. Best running shoes ever! Worth the price.

If you have bunions, the hard plastic stripe goes right across them, doubt they will stretch.

I love these shoes! They fit true to size and they make my feet feel happy. I am an ER nurse and n=my feet felt like I was walking on a cloud. The purple ones are beautiful. I am off to purchase the gray ones.

I love these shoes! I was hesitant because of the price but I am happy I tried them. I use these for work where I am on my feet for 12 hours. These work great and my feet aren’t nearly as sore at the end of the day. I have wide feet with high arches and my usual size fit well so I am guessing these may be wide for a narrow foot. I do feel that these have better arch support than most Hokas which I appreciate although they are not as cushy as the Speed goats.

This being the first pair of running shoes I have purchased in years, I knew I had a lot to get used to, compared to my daily wearing of Dansko non-slip clogs at work. I needed something with more cushion for the number of hours I am on my feet walking. The last is stiff. I will admit that my feet are a little sore at the end of the day- but they were before in clogs also, so this is just a different feeling. My legs do not ache like they used to. I was deciding between the Hoka Speedgoat and these, and glad I stuck with the larger size of the 2 I ordered. I am between a 7.5 and 8 in everything, and depending on brand could go either way, and the 8 was just right in these. My toes hit the end in 7.5, and though I was worried with my narrow foot, wide toe splay and narrow heel that these wouldn't work, a couple days of adjusting the laces, and I am so thankful for these. I feel so much lighter when I walk now. Will definitely buy again.

These felt very cushy and I felt like I had great support right out of the box and straight to my 6 mile Monday morning run. I am having a bit of pain due to standing and driving a lot for my job. I have always worn New Balance, which now seem so flat to me after trying the Stinson 4 ATR. I do both trail and pavement and average 6- 10 miles per run. I have worn these since mid February and they are completely broken in. I feel like they are more squishy now, and I am a bit concerned that they aren’t going to last as long as my New Balance. I find them to be a bit too pricy, I love the support but I see the soles not lasting as long as my other pairs. I realize these are a different type of sneaker (a meta rocker), but for $160 plus tax these should last way longer! I also like the tongue and laces on these, they stay in place and aren’t super long for the laces. I think my feet stay cooler than my other sneakers too. I am glad that I tried them, I just might be buying a pair again but maybe wait for a sale. :-)

I'm a nurse, on my feet all day. Before my back, legs and feet would kill me by days end. I'd also feel so tired 3/4 of the way through my shift. After buying my first pair for work, I loved them so much I immediately bought a second pair for home. These made a huge difference

I have suffered from plantar fasciitis for several years. To even walk a mile was simply to painful. I received these shoes from my sister and let me tell you, it was night and day! Now, I have 8 pairs of Hokas, three of which are the ATR 4's. These shoes, literally, took me from being in pain all day to being somewhat pain free. My only gripe is, I wish they would not have redesigned the ATR 4. I have a pair of the ATR 5's and they just don't feel the same. If it's not broke don't fix it!
