I want to buy another one just in case. This has replaced my work bag and my travel bag because the contents carry so well in briefcase or backpack mode and it can dress up or down. Absolutely well thought-out and solid design with a quality comparable to my 3-way assault packs and ruck. I see the simple shoulder strap as a positive for being lightweight and unobtrusive even though I use it every day with 10-15lbs.

I've owned and use this bag for 10 months at a new position at work. It has been an everyday essential and held up fantastically. I work in construction and this bag rides in a work truck or is in a tool trailer 4 days a week and you really can't tell. I replace boots every year but I think this bag will last several.

I'd give it 4.5 stars if half-stars were available. Very happy with this as an everyday bag, and that I can expand it so I can take some larger things to/from work. I went to Mystery Ranch 3way from a black messenger bag with mollee loops and velcro that looked too tactical/military. I prefer it as a should bag for everyday use, and as a pack for being an overnight bad. As a travel carry-on I prefer it as a should bag so I can throw it on top of my rolling bag and not have lots of strap to get hung up while traveling. I went with the Tiger's Eye color so it doesn't get lost in the sea of black luggage. Plenty or organizational space, but could probably use a specific pen/pencil holder. Well built with good materials.
Two things it really needs - Padded should strap when in messenger-bag mode, similar to the backpack straps, or as a removable option. If it is full of heavy stuff it is uncomfortable to carry for very long. It also could use a built-in business card / luggage ID holder that is obvious but doesn't expose the name/ID of the owner.

I bought this as a gift for my brother, and he has appeared to really like it.
I did take into consideration the review from 5 months ago about the shoulder strap, so as a precaution I also sent him a sling.

The front pocket is as clever as described and overall this is a great bag! Room enough for a water bottle and some extras but still compact enough to easily go anywhere.

I've been using this bag for about a month now, and I must say I'm thoroughly impressed, especially with its size. It offers ample space for my working documents, laptop, and all the related accessories. Recently, I took it on a plane trip, and it proved to be a fantastic addition to my luggage. I must say that I haven't tried the backpack mode but then, do I really need it?

I've had this bag (previous model) for 3 years and I am absolutely in love with it. Zippers are still tight, construction is all still in excellent condition. I can't speak highly enough about this bag it's just perfect. I've taken it to Italy for a 2 week trip, and countless business trips. Versatile, comfortable, just really well engineered!

Fantastic bag. Great quality, features and organization. Seemed small when it first arrived. However, after packing laptop, folio, noise canceling headphones, water bottle, jacket, sunglasses etc. with room to spare, it no longer felt small. Perfect for traveling and air travel. The gray color is much darker in person (a good thing) and should resist wear/stains.

I bought this as a gift for a friend of mine who is almost ready for her private pilot check ride. She needed something that would hold her headset, charts, flight books, and all the other miscellaneous items that a pilot needs to carry. The bag is very well-built. The stitching looks like it will hold up to the tossing around it gets when being thrown in the back of the plane or the car. There are numerous compartments. I chose the orange color because the black headset, black flashlight, and other dark items are easier to find than in a black bag. My friend was especially impressed with the versatility, with the bag being able to be used as a backpack, carry-on with handles, or slipping over a suitcase handle stem. It's just the right size--not too large, yet big enough to hold the essentials a pilot needs. It also can be used as a regular suitcase and would fit under the seat in a commercial airliner. It does not open completely flat--a small concern expressed by my friend. I would recommend this bag because of its versatility and well-made construction.

Purchased this for work and do not regret at all. Has the right amount of pockets and storage. Laptop feels secure. No shift when using backpack straps if things are stored correctly.

I've had this bag for a month now and traveled with it extensively.
Huge fan of the space/features/ruggedness/protection. I've been through at least a half dozen competitor bags and never found the ideal mix. This bag has it all.
The only item I'd change (perhaps) is the single shoulder strap.

I bought this for my wife, for an upcoming trip. She's really excited to use it. She likes how easy it is to go from back pack to a purse to a bag for travel. She likes how secure things.

I currently do not have an office, so I must take everything with me for the day. We often work in one area in the morning and another in the afternoon. This bag accommodates my computer and accessories in the back pocket, paperwork and water bottle in middle pocket, and pens, business cards and stethoscope in the front pocket. Love the orange color.

Purchased this bag after seeing someone with it on the street. I was surprised with the features and build when receiving it. The bag has the right amount of pockets to stay organized. The dividers are great and my laptop feels secure.
Nothing shifts around when you wear it like a backpack and it's comfortable. Wearing it as a messenger bag was how I wore it originally but the strap was kind of basic (Which is my only complaint).
Highly recommend it.

The little concerns I have for the Mystery Ranch 3 Way Expandable Brief Case is all addressed in the new edition (2023). It's a perfect EDC for me as a professor with a lot international travel. Have a lot of organizations to keep valuable items, those meant for easy access, secure and safe place for laptop and iPad, enough room for files to review while on the move, additional room for a light jacket, luggage pass-through, and to sum it up, several different modes of carry - just perfect for my daily life. Additionally, the build quality is amazingly excellent.

Just got it and I love it! I most recently had a timbuk2 commuter. I like the mystery ranch much better due to the shear amount of storage. Also the quality is top notch.

I recently purchased and used this bag as a carry-on on an international trip. It was the perfect size for a change of clothes and meds... Two days of delays and no luggage made this bag critical while I waited. Tons of room and compartments, it is very well made and thought out. My ONLY drawback is the shoulder strap. The shoulder strap is very uncomfortable, and its unique attachment points makes it difficult to replace. If the shoulder strap matched the quality of the bag, this would be an easy 5 stars.

Setup is great fits my laptop and all accompanying equipment and the from pocket is easy to get to on the run.
Would give this 5 stars if the carry strap was padded and had better connection. would be nice if they were metal and the strap was padded.
Great quality and exactly what you'd expect for MR

This is a great pack for laptop carry. There is plenty of padding in the sleeve and lots of pocket options for the other small things you need on a daily basis. I like being able to switch from a shoulder strap to the backpack straps, but also having the two hand carry straps is a thoughtful addition too. I also like that it stands on it's own when you set it on the ground. This makes for easy access and you don't have to zip it shut all the time. With no computer, I don't carry this bag just because it has a ton of padding and feels bulky otherwise. I'll be trimming the backpack straps down, they are a bit excessive for me, but that's the only change I'd recommend.

Great bad for air travel. Holds a laptop, light jacket, book, water bottle, and all manner of small miscellaneous items. The luggage pass through is great when you have it loaded heavy and don't want to use the shoulder strap or switch to backpack mode. I agree with others, the stroller strap could use some padding, that's the only reason it gets 4 stars. The tigers eye color is much better in person than the pictures online. Saw it in the store and had to have it.

I needed a lightweight messenger bag for work and travel, and the fact that this one could be converted into a backpack was a huge plus. It's about half the weight of the Swiss Army backpack I was using earlier, with a nifty high-tech quick clasp and waterproof zippers, so it's perfect for what I need. Great color, as shown. The only downsides I note is that it's a tight squeeze to fit my 15.6" laptop (but it does fit) and there are no easy access pen or phone pockets (but several square-ish interior pockets).

Just bought this and so far it holds all my work items with room for more. Only reason it's not a 5 star is shoulder strap could be better.

Review for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
I have had this bag now for 3 months. I use it daily as a work bag and can fit all my teaching essentials in there. I really appreciate all the organization the bag has to offer and that I can carry it as a briefcase or backpack. Zippers are good quality and the bag feels very durable. It is a really great bag, but I do have three gripes: the shoulder strap is so cheap and does not have any cushion to it. For $200, they should’ve made it better. The other thing that bothers me is the bag tends to lean forward when using it like a briefcase and sometimes topples over. The only other thing that bothers me about the bag is the ugly label on the front. I prefer something not labeled or if it must be something more sleek and subtle. Overall though it is a good bag and I am still happy with my purchase.

I use the pack to and from the office and in the field. Its a solid bag I bought a mole panel for the inside compartment for a bottle holder and a few more pockets. It should be built with those features. The strap is crappy, they make a great padded strap for the other shoulder bags. I even called to try to buy one separately and they wouldn't budge. The front closure is neat but the novelty of a buckle and 2 zippers wears off pretty quickly. Overall its a quality item that I know will last a long time.
