I purchased this jacket last year and initially loved it. Now that the weather has gotten cooler, I took out the jacket for this season and threw it into the washer and I laundered on gentle cycle in cool water as advised on tag. Upon removing from the washer I noticed the seam to the lining had all unraveled and split open. So disappointing. L.L. Bean's quality has declined and for the price of this item, I would have expected better quality!!

Only if the zipper be easier to operate will be much better, the jacket is not cheap, I expect it should upgrade the zipper

I got this riding jacket for Christmas and was very disappointed. The fit was boxy in the shoulders and bulged awkwardly when bending (like to go to ride). I had hoped this would be a nice layering jacket for me to ride my horse in and do barn chores, but it was all wrong too thin, poor cut, bad fit. The hardware seemed nice on the jacket and the look was nice, but it wasn't functional for what I needed and we returned it.

The coat looked beautiful online but when I unwrapped it, it wasn't as thick as I'd hoped. It's actually quite light. I also ordered an XS. I realize my measurements aren't average but I was hoping it would fit. Wish they had XXS and and that it was cozier. I will be returning it.

We have one of these from maybe 12-15 years ago, and it's been getting pretty worn out, so thought we'd get a new one.
We have a M but we've gained weight and thought, let's go try it on rather than guessing the size.
The new jackets feel stiffer, the lining is nowhere near as nice, and the XL seemed to fit about the same as our M.
Really disappointed. Will try to repair our old jacket.

Jacket was a gift from my daughter. Love it, except at least half the time the zipper doesn't catch correctly and I end up half stuck with one side up and the other down.

The petite sleeves are too long though usually wear small and wish length was longer. Too lazy during covid to look elsewhere as petites hard to locate and it is serviceable. Says it's for colder weather than I think I'll use it but hi-tech insulators can be surprising. Attractive and nice quality. Think of as early fall/late winter jacket for CT.

I am a loyal customer of LL Bean and have been the same size since I started ordering from LL Bean. However, this product did not fit correctly and the zipper malfunctioned when trying it on. I do not believe it stood up to the usual LL Bean standards. This has not swayed my decision to purchase in the future however, I think quality control has changed. I will shop in their store in Paramus Park Mall before ordering from the catalog.

I bought this jacket a few years ago. Today's version is an inferior product. Prior, the jacket was heavier or thicker. Perhaps, more polyester fill? In addition, the lining at least felt like a cotton blend. This one is nylon/polyester exterior and interior. Returning the jacket.

It's a pity about this jacket. It had some nice features but the sleeves were ridiculously too long - I have long arms for my height and the sleeves nearly covered my hands and were not designed to be turned up. I am returning it.

I had a simple t-shirt on and the arms were so tight it was literally uncomfortable. The website says this is a relaxed fit but it is slightly fitted. Worst of all, the zipper wouldn't zip. It was sent back within an hour.

The jacket is very nice, very well made and I loved the color. But unfortunately it was way too big. I ordered the XS Petite and it was way to big to keep. I was sorely disappointed that it did not fit.

I'm 5'6", 165 pounds, 69 years old, and have the pear shaped figure. I ordered a large, my normal LL Bean size. The jacket is perfect for travel - very light weight but sufficent warmth for early spring. However, the jacket falls in an A Shape: the chest is snug (I'm a 36C), but the waist and hips are comfortably roomy. The sleeves are too long and come below the knuckles. The sleeves, partularly around the elbow, are snug when the elbow is bent and could not accomodate a sweater underneath the jacket. I've given a lot of detail since other reviewers have made similar comments about the chest and sleeve lenght and width. The coat would be great on a very thin person with long arms.

The zipper was very difficult to work. It got stuck when I tried it on. It was tight under the arms. Loved the color, style and fabric. I hope you will modify it. The zipper definitely needs improvement. I returned it.

This is a nice jacket but does not allow freedom of movement that you would expect in a "Riding Jacket". I did expect more room across the back and underarms. I started with a medium, and exchanged to a large. Neither would allow me to be comfortable doing my chores, let along ride. However, if you just want the "style" and not actually "use" this jacket in the barn (or walking dogs, raking leaves, etc) then it may work.

The material of the jacket did not look great and the quality seemed only ok. I had a friend that had one a few years ago and I remember complimenting her on the jacket. Now it seems cheaper. The fit was also off for me, it flared too much at the hips and was not flattering. I returned it.

I gave this a jacket lower rating and wouldn't recommend it, because it's advertised in the Warmer category (35 to -15 degrees), but was barely warm enough when temps were in the 40's. Otherwise, it's a beautiful jacket... nice style, lightweight, nice color (cayenne).

I purchased this coat in late Nov 2016 and have used it off and on over two fall/winters. I really like the jacket as it is just the right weight for cool days and also for colder days and layering. Unfortunately there are two things I haven't liked. 1) the zipper is very temperamental and at times the box and pin will not line even though they seem to be lined up--so that you can get the slider to move up and zip the coat shut. 2) the inside lining is separating. I take very good care of my clothes and do not feel that this should have happened plus I did not buy a coat too small which could have caused it to tear at the inside back seam. I have ordered the black and navy to see which coat that I like best color-wise but I think now after discovering the tear in the lining of the coat I have--I will not purchase another.

Love the idea of the two-way zipper, but the zipper on the jacket I purchased is "klugy" taking at least 5 minutes to work it correctly. I want to zip and go, not play with it.
Yes, the jacket is "bell shaped" as another reviewer stated. It was perfect sizing for the elderly women in my family who need a light-weight, but warm jacket that is easy to zip/snap with a generous fit around the waist. They both loved it, but the zipper made it a no-go.
I tried it on, same problem with zipper. My husband tried to work the zipper, and agreed. For the price of this jacket, I expected the two-way zipper to work smoothly.
Love the style and the older women loved the "bell" fit, but it has to be returned. I would have bought two more had the zipper worked properly.

After loving my last quilted riding jacket for many years I decided to freshen it up. What a disappointment. Instead of my cosy cotton exterior coat with corduroy collar and Thermore lining I got this slippery nylon, thin, fitted jacket that really I have never worn. If I didn't live in Australia, I'd have sent it back.

I'm not sure how many stars to give this. I like how it's made and the body has a nice fitted look but the arms are boxy and really long. It does have a cute plaid lining, but I don't want to HAVE to roll the sleeves. I'm 5'5" about 120 lbs and I returned the small for an extra small. While x-small was better it's still too big in the arms. The only thing left to try is petite (and I'm not usually petite in coats). If you can get the sizing right and/or you're taller it's a good coat.

The jacket is beautiful, but the armhole placement is really off (low) and the double zipper is definitely problematic. I originally ordered an XL which was huge and the armholes were placed really low, which causes the shoulders to bunch. So I sent it back and ordered the L. The L was just a bit too snug in the shoulders and again the arm hole placement was low, which causes the coat to ride up in the shoulders. The double zipper is also difficult to work. Its too bad this jacket has such a weird fit, it is stunning in person and it would have been a perfect Fall/Spring coat. Please fix these issues, I wanted to love this coat.

This jacket arrived in the mail the morning that I left for a month-long trip. I decided to take it with me, as it is light, warm, & washable, making it seem excellent for travel.
Unfortunately, the first time I wore it, the snap at the wrist fell off the coat, leaving a hole in the sleeve, and no way to keep the cuff from flopping down annoyingly.
Apart from that, the jacket has been fine. I've been warm enough in temperatures down to the high 20's F and almost too warm in temperatures in the 40's F. Although it is not waterproof, it even kept me warm when I got lightly rained on and damp.
The problem is that snap. It's something that can't be mended by the wearer- there's a hole in the jacket and only one half of a snap. While LLBean will undoubtedly offer to repair it or replace it, what if it happens again? I have no room in my life for a jacket that may need to be repeatedly returned for simple repairs. If it had a button at the wrist, I would have given it 5 stars.

I returned this because from the pictures I thought it was insulated. It was not. It was more of a Spring jacket than a Fall one. I did find another one that was what I was looking for. Overall its a nice jacket, but not for me.

I chose this jacket because I needed one for the shoulder seasons, for use about town, where my muddy barn coat wouldn't be suitable. I ordered the size I always wear from Bean's. With only a turtleneck under the jacket, the weight, warmth, and length were just right; the blue color was nicely understated (could be dressed up or down); and the shape was flattering. Then I tried to raise my arms. The upper sleeves were so tight that the cuff rode halfway up my forearm, my shoulders and elbows were pinched, and I couldn't raise my arms even to shoulder height. I have never had a misfit like this from any other LL Bean shirt, sweater, or coat. No way was this jacket styled for any physical activity. If I try a size larger, then my arms might fit, but the rest of my body will swim in the jacket. The sizing for this jacket was a major mistake by LL Bean, and I'm disappointed because this was just the kind of jacket I was looking for.
