I love Altra shoes and boots and have used/loved at least 10 pairs. Including a pair of Olympus 5 - non-gortex that I LOVE. They fit great out of the box and are super cushiony. I don't get sore heels after long hikes. But these gortex ones are too small. I've ALWAYS fit size 8.5 and these just don't fit. And I won't size up because the heel slips as well. And sizing up would make that worse. I don't understand why an Olympus 5 doesn't fit the exact same if it's gortex or non-gortex but these are not as wide, and not as long. I have the 2 side by side to compare, both a size 8.5. Altra - I love your shoes but stay consistent please. And YES to a gortex sneaker with high cushion and tread for hiking. Hopefully next model fits like your normal altras - wide toe box and no heel slip.

This is my second review after have worn this tennis now for over a month or so. I wear them almost everyday for housework and errands, nice and cushy. I walk in the park occasionally, even in the rain. Excellent traction. They continue to be sturdy, well made with very good arch support for my fallen arch where I have a new ankle joint. New joint does not swell and no more pain with this shoe. Has made a major difference in my life. Love the extra holes for ties, gives extra support and snuggles for my narrow AA feet. Finally a tennis that my toes can move and are not all scrunched together. Love the sole being a bit wider makes a big difference in my balance at 70 yrs. old. Only complaint that I have...I do wish that they would make the same color shoe strings available to buy and maybe think about sending an extra pair along with the shoe when bought. Basic colors are not going to look good with this shoe. Other then that, no complaints. I would still buy again. Love these! Thanks Altra!

It was true love when I put them on. I knew immediately! After doing 7000 of elevation and not slipping once in the first 3 days I owned these I had to purchase a second pair. I love the color, fit, comfort, grip, toe box, "waterproofness", and how my feet, knees, and hips feel after I hike. Well done! The second pair is for next year just in case anything is changed or discontinued between now and then. I will be doing a 500 mile adventure next fall. I usually wear a 9. Ordered these 9.5.

Constrictive for blood flow at first. Removed a lace loop over the top of foot: heaven. Stuff bowtie under laces no issue. Cushion and grip are great. Toes smash a bit on downhills. Warm in winter.

The Olympus 5 Hike is the best I have ever walked in! Excellent support for new ankle joint, excellent arch support for fallen old, tired arches. Great traction. Retired 70 yr. old women uses for every day errands and lunch with gals. I take size 9 1/2 shoe, narrow feet (double A). Bought size 10.5 to wear with a 1/4 golf sock medium thick. Great roomy toe space. PERFECT FIT! Splurged on myself and will buy again Worth every cent! Love the color, true burgundy :-)

I love my Olympus 5 Hike shoes! They are comfortable with lots of cushion and the Goretex waterproof technology is great when the trail is wet or there's a water crossing. It makes it fun to puddle jump on the trail!

I bought the Olympus 5 GTX for my 2-week trek in Iceland. My feet stayed dry and warm through creek crossings, torrential rain and waterfall exploration. They feel just like my Olympus 4s. I still use dirty girl gaiters and was disappointed that they are no longer equipped for gaiters. I cut the gaiter clips off an old pair of Altras and sewed them on with dental floss. Then I glued velcro on the heels with crazy glue.

Just got them this week! They are sick! Been waiting for the new Olympus Forever!!! There is no option for 1/4 size. Ivguess I would say, they do not run small. I am wearing same size as my Olympus 4

Usually order a 9 and I ordered a 9.5 based on other reviews. I have high arches and somewhat narrow feet. These feel narrow along the foot, but the toe box is perfect and the heel feels secure, not sliding in and out (so far). Cushioning is impressive. Laces could be longer, and wish there was not stitching in the heel, hoping with good socks it does not cause rubbing on long hikes or come apart at the seams. Good shoe at $100 but would not pay more than that.

I wear a size 10 shoe, but size 11 in hiking and athletic shoes. I have other ALTRA athletic shoes in a size 11 that fit me fine. I do not have wide feet. However, this was very tight around my forefoot, which was surprising given that this is supposed to be the original fit and larger. My other ALTRAs are the standard fit and fit me great. There is no size 11.5, so I unfortunately had to go all the way up to a size 12 and put in a thick insole to get this to work. They are cushioned well and once you find the right size, I do recommend them.

I am a committed Altra customer. I've owned Lone Peaks, Timps, and others over the years -- all used for day hikes of 5-8 mile distances. I'm about to go on a multi-day trek with high daily mileage and in possibly wet conditions. The Olympus 5 GTX looked like the perfect shoe so I ordered first the mid and then the low. Sadly, both were just too much shoe. The size, as everyone has said, needs to be a half size larger -- but the bigger problem for me is that the uppers are just too stiff for my old arthritic feet. I have returned both and will continue my search for the perfect hiker. Fortunately, Zappos has great customer service!

Maybe Topo? Looks like they may have copied the Altra toe box

Please read the previous critical reviews, they really do hit the mark. I love the toe box, so roomy for my toes. I also love the waterproof and warmth of this shoe, I even love the color. BUT, the heel slips way too much, it's too shallow, shoelaces won't stay tied, no lace lock doesn't work either. I almost returned them but kept trying different shoelaces, socks, etc. I'm really hoping the manufacturer addresses these important issues. I would not buy these again until they've worked out the kinks.

The bottom tread on the shoe has already pulled off and will have to return for an exchange. Otherwise, I really like the shoes, very comfortable.

If there was and option for no stars that's what I would pick. These shoes hurt my feet almost immediately. The are much more narrow than the olympus5. The Olympus 5 had plenty of room in the toe box it was cushiony and flexible. The Olympus 5 GTX is none of that. It's narrow, stiff, zero cushioning. They should not boast the original foot shape for these shoes nor should they lead you to believe that it is the most cushioning they have available cuz it's not. The lone Peaks sevens have more cushion than these. They are awful. Shame on you Altra

I have bought so many hiking shoes/boots over the years. Finally I have found a winner! I just got back from hiking in them around Mt Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Dolomites. These shoes were supportive, non slippery, waterproof and wide enough for comfort even wearing wool socks. Highly recommend!

The size is perfect for a low Hiking shoe. Very comfortable for all my Trail hikes. When I purchased my first pair of Altra Hiking Boots, I fell in love with the brand. The boots fit perfectly with your feet. You have room for your toes. I no longer get blisters to my toes since I transitioned to Altra. This is brand is my favorite for hiking.

I have tried on at least 20 different shoes/boots for hiking which I really need for walking on uneven terrain in fields. I'm on my 4th pair of Paradigms and my 3rd pair of Lone Peaks....and I loved this shoe when I first saw it...but it was squeezy, and hardly felt like a large toe box. I returned the 9.5 which is already on the large side for me and got a size 10. They are so comfortable now I never want to take them off! I think the Goretex addition reduces the actual size of the shoe somehow, so I would recommend sizing up a 1/2 size.

I originally bought these for a trip to Iguazu Falls. They worked great for me. My feet were quite warm but it was 107 degrees. Everyone commented on how tough these shoes look. I now wear them for working in my yard, going through wet grass, the woods or over rocks and mud. They get dirty and wet and offer great support and I just wipe them clean. I have bunions and use additional arch support and toe spacers with plenty of room. They fit me similar to my Paradigm Wides.

I am a Respiratory Therapist and I work in a Level #4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Things can get pretty busy, lots and lots of foot work involved. I was extremely impressed at the comfort level of these shoes as soon as I put my feet in them.

My physical therapist strongly suggested I get shoes with the best possible structural support for my recovery from a badly broken foot (many bones), ankle and leg. He recommended Altra. My foot is learning how to be a foot again!

Game changers. For the first time in 10 years, I have no foot pain. Bought these and went straight to Patagonia to backpack for a week. They performed like a dream. Also, dried quicker than expected after jumping through water falls. Can you please make a clipless bike shoe for me?????? ;)

I have had these since fall 2023, I have worn them all winter even in snow and rain and they keep my feet warm and dry, the only time I went to boots was when we had inches of snow. Very comfortable. I will buy again.

I have had these shoes for several weeks. They are comfortable, if a little heavy, do not slip on wet asphalt, and they keep my feet dry and WARM in the winter with temps down in the 10's it is nice not to have to wear extra socks.
