I mainly wear them for work as I'm on my feet for 10 hours and they are very comfortable. Feet feel great all day.

Great shoe . But prefer it a half size larger than normal . Wear 11 in other Altra's and these had to be 11.5 , it's a bit narrow mid shoe but workable and get better with break in..

I do a minimum of a 5 mile trail run with a weighted vest multiple times a week and more. After a year the shoes are still in relatively great shape. My only complaint is after 8 months a piece of the tread is flapping around. But they are still good to run in and still extremely comfortable.

After ordering the wrong size (my fault) and finally being able to put them on my feet, I realized that they do not have gaiter attachments. I ONLY bought this model because it has the "good tongue." The Olympus 5 has the razor blade tongue that leaves cuts in my ankles, so I thought I would give this a go. I wear gaiters to keep dirt out of my socks and no amount of water proofing is going to stop that so I don't understand why the gaiter attachments are omitted. Super sad. Back to Lone Peak and the only hiking model left with decent padding and a good tongue.

I ordered a pair of these from Zappos to use as an everyday shoe, as I like having all-terrain grip and really like "waterproof" / lined shoes. Unfortunately, these were so tight I had a hard time getting them on (over relatively light socks), and there was no way they'd be comfortable long-term.
I'd also recommend:
Topo

Fits like my Olympus 3 and 4, I wouldn't change sizing at all, normal 11.5 for me. Finally a possible long distance backpack shoe that won't hurt after many miles. I have Lone Peak, Topo and others.

I've only worn them out for a couple of full days but the support is fantastic. We'll see how they do in the rain!

Traction, Performance and Comfort are the three things I judge a terrain performance shoe on. As soon as I received ALTRA's Running Men's Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX, I was taken aback by how bulky looking the shoe is. Upon initial inspection, the heels looked too high for stable walking on uneven outdoor terrains. However, all these first impressions were eradicated by the excellent experience I had with these shoes. First, I used the shoes for outdoor jogging on uneven and muddy terrains. The GORE-TEX product technology kept the shoes firm and waterproof so that it did not matter how much rain my outdoor jog faced. Next, I did a quick hike to the nearest hill to test comfort and I am extremely satisfied with the Balanced Cushioning technology that evens out the stress and pressure of the terrain to my feet resulting in no sore spots after the hike. I usually use a gel insole on all of my shoes but this one did not feel the need for one as there is excellent hold on my soles and every angle of my feet. The Foot Shape Comfort technology really shines on my size 10 mens Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX. This enhances protection from uneven balance from uneven terrains that lessens injuries and discomfort from extended usage. I am more excited now that it is gearing towards winter, I can test its hold on freezing climate. I highly recommend this product for its incredible traction, performance and impeccable comfort. If you get to choose just one hiking, trailing, jogging shoes on the outdoors, you don't have to worry because there is Altra Running Olympus 5 that will fit your outdoor footwear needs.

I was a huge fan of the 4s to the point where I had purchased multiple pairs. I would average somewhere between 400-500 miles of hiking in those shoes before the seams would give out. After about 60 miles of hiking in the 5s I'm starting to notice very slight (but still noticeable) separation. I will update review when I can. The 4 star rating is because of how comfortable they feel, but my hope is that they will be as durable and what I'm noticing is just the shoe breaking in.

I purchased these to get a water resistant version of my Olympus 4’s. The Olympus 5 seems like a great update, but not for my wide foot. They seem to be well made and are good looking. They were perfect in length, they just run narrower than the 4’s, so I had to return them. If Altra made these in a “wide”, I would definitely try them again.

These are solid hiking shoes with good grip in loose conditions. I don't think they'll win any style awards though. The "Footshape" design looks very weird, almost like stubby clown shoes. I got the same feedback from others on the shape. Even with the Footshape design, it's a little tight around the arch with plenty of space around the toes. I will sometimes wear a wider shoe depending on the brand, so that may be the reason. Besides the funky looking design, the shoes are light and durable, unlike other hiking shoes that can be clunky and heavy. They're light enough that I forget I'm wearing these most of the time. Solid grip on loose or wet ground. I haven't submerged these yet in any truly wet conditions to know how water resistant they are, but my socks stayed dry in the heavy rain while camping over the weekend. Footshape design is a turn off, but they are a good hiking shoe.

I really wanted to love these GTX all-season trail runners. The toe box felt good. The traction was great - even on wet tile. The cushioning was great. It felt fun to go up and down stairs in these. I got compliments on the deep teal color and style. But not only did I have to go up a half size (which I do for all Altras it seems), but the Gore-Tex just made everything tighter. And I couldn't go even longer (a full size larger) without catching the toe constantly on stairs and terrain. Better with thin running socks, but I wanted these for really cold weather and thicker socks. I wish Altra made more shoes in wide, since the whole side of my foot just felt cramped. Sadly, I returned two pairs of these in favor of the non-Gore-Tex version, which I absolutely love so far.

The Altra Running Men's Olympus 5 shoes are sturdy strong well made shoes! It took me a little bit to get used to the weight of the shoe. These shoes are excellent to run on trials or just outside in general. Because of the weight of the shoe- I prefer running shoes while running on the concrete. I've recommended to my running buddies and to other family members! The overall strength and performance is unmatched! I would recommend stretching a little longer to make sure your legs are warmed up before running long distances on the trail with these shoes!!

The issue with this shoe for me is as follows: on the positive side it has the best cushioned sole feel of any Altra or hiking shoe I have ever had. It is like walking on a cloud, not too hard, and not too cushiony. On the negative side it does not have any extra room in the toe box and is a little loose in the heel. Now, the looseness in the heel is I think due to the stiffness of the soul. It seems to be dissipating as I break them in, but will not dissipate completely. I do recommend using the additional lace hole and there seems to be marks to make even an additional hole for the laces, which I have not tried. As for the front toe box, for me, I don't think a larger size will help as the heel would just be looser in a larger size. I am keeping them even though the toe box is tighter than my Torins, but not a deal killer, even though the heel is slightly loose. My point is, where are you going to go. I have wasted money on enough hiking shoes. There are not shoes that fit like Torins for those of us who have human foots, narrow heels and need a roomy toe box. But if you wear Torins and you need hiking shoes, go with these, get those laces tight, and hope that Altra will get the message for the next version to keep the great sole, make it a bit more flexible, narrow the heel, and provide a tad more room in the toe box. Those of us who wear Torins have nowhere else to go for hiking shoes, so go with these.

After buying and receiving my first pair of Olympus 4s I quickly bought 4 more pairs. I don't run and do not hike as much as I would like to but those shoes are wonderful on the feet. Plenty of width and nice balanced footing. When the new Olympus 5s came out I wasn't a big fan of the colors except for the GTX in black. I decided to order a pair once my size came back in stock. Once I got them I put them on and I can say the heel lock up is improved over the 4s. However they run a little narrow compared to the 4s. And just like the 4s, they run a size too small (which does not bother me because I just size up). I do wonder how the regular Olympus 5s feel in the width department but am waiting on some more color option before I buy a pair.

I really wanted to like this shoe. I have had several pairs of previous Altra Olympus trail runners, and I also own the Altra Olympus Via running shoe. These have a completely different fit. They are much tighter around the forefoot. I went up a half-size and they are still too small. It's a tight fit, and doesn't seem to be built around the original last as claimed.

Very tight compared to other styles. Might be ok once broken in but for the price it’s not worth the try.

I have 3 pairs of the Olympus 5 GTX high rise and love them. They fit perfectly. But the low rise is hard to get on and is too narrow, mainly at the bridge. Oddly though, they feel OK, tight at the bridge, loose on the rest of the foot, once I have walked a bit. I have worn them for 3 days all day, doing 10K steps per day on New York sidewalks and they feel OK once I get over the initial period

The size was a bit small for my feet, but the main problem was the zero drop...it felt like a negative drop (uncomfortably so) and the shoe also was causing my feet to pronate (tilt inward), which they do not naturally do. The shoe also caused discomfort on the outer edge of my foot, perhaps from the pronation. I walked only around inside my house and decided to return them.

After two pair of Lone Peak All WTHR, I really wanted these to fit. Despite being 12 USA Medium, same as the Lone Peak they were tight mid foot. Toe box was tighter but workable, mid foot, as another reviewer mentioned is just too tight for comfort yet the heal area loose. How can an original fit be so different? Construction looks amazingly good but for a much different foot than mine

I use this shoe as an everyday shoe and it does well for that purpose but is just too narrow to be comfortable. The back of the heel slips as well. These are sturdy and I know they will last a long time since they're taking time to break into, which I prefer. Would love this shoe if they weren't so tight around my mid-foot and if they didn't slip off my heel

Whoa! Love the look. I wear 11 size Altras. I have 4 different models and they all are great. With the Olympus, 11 and 11.5 were too narrow. Waterproof membrane needs to be thinner or wider shape.

After a little over 1 month of owning the OLYMPUS 5 HIKE LOW GTX the sole is coming unglued. Same as listed in 1 Star Ratings. Unacceptable for shoe of this quality. Why design a shoe with glue in inserts on the sole? Other than this issue they are the best shoes. Grotex, wide toe box, my toes are thankful for this design. Retailer replaced shoes for me. 5 Stars to my retailer. Hopefully this pair last. Altra also reached out to me offering to replace (see response below). 5 Stars to Altra customer service and willingness to back their product. Considering design of glued inserts on the sole I would only give this model a 1 star, but it is such a great shoe otherwise and great customer service. So I give it 3 Stars. Hopefully they modify this design leaving out the glued in inserts. Altra Response: "Hi Jim, we are sorry to hear you are having issues with Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX. We would love to review this for you as quickly as possible. We've sent you an email directly and you should receive it soon. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we look forward to speaking with you soon."

SO excited to get the Olympus shoes in waterproof. They fit great and true to size. I wore them 4 times for 15 miles each time - and when I took them off a few days ago I noticed they have started fray at the topline above the heel collar. I have had other Olympus models for months with no issues whatsoever. Altra customer service suggested I return within 30 days of purchase. Hope they figure out the details soon - the Olympus shoes are the best.

Most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. But the price it too much for how long they last. I've had two pairs of these and they both squeak annoyingly loud. They both tear up very easy. They just fall apart in a couple months. But the waterproofing is great.
