The fit, stability, grip, comfort, and ankle support of this boot are all awesome! The colors even grew on me. I would have given them five stars if the tread didn't start to tear off after 20 miles. I was so disappointed to have to return these and am hoping that a new pair holds up better.

As an avid runner and hiker, I was super excited to try the Altra Running Men's Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX shoes, and they surely didn't disappoint in any way. On rugged terrain, the Altra Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX offered great traction with mid ankle support, and I didn't slip on any wet surfaces near water streams. I also noticed that on smoother terrain the shoes carried me effortlessly, as they were lightweight and offered a nice comfortable cushioning for my feet. These shoes fit better than my Hoka running shoes, which are a little too narrow. They also offer better traction than my Hoka shoes. The Altra Olympus shoes are also more lightweight than my Brooks running shoes, and offer better balance of cushioning. I noticed that the Altra Olympus 5 Hike shoes were not too firm or plush on the inside, and gave my feet the perfect amount of support. I will surely look to Altra for my next pair of shoes, as they are made to fit my feet, easy to wear, and keep my feet on the go without any pain and blisters. I have been recommending the Altra Running Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX shoes to all of my friends that go hiking with me.

I'm an avid hiker and need a hiking shoe with a big toe box. I have waited to review the Men's Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX until I've truly tested it. Nothing like hiking with this boot through varied terrain, weather and hikes to get to know the boot. The Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX is the most comfortable boot I have worn in many years. I started hiking with this boot June 30, 2022 and have hiked multiple day hikes and a couple of backpacking trips totaling over 150 miles and over 28000 ft elevation gain. Over half of these hikes would be considered HARD by most hiking apps. So what do I think? I have owned several different Altra shoes over the years and the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX has been the most versatile, and enduring with a few exceptions. My feet are comfortable for miles, whether I have a light pack or heavier backpacking loads. I have Morton Neuromas in both feet and these boots are a godsend, almost as if I don't have neuromas. Now for some details. 1.) The very first thing I did before the first hike, was to change shoelaces to some that were at least a few inches longer. The stock shoelaces were too short for my foot comfort and ease of fitting. 2.) These boots handle and grip various surfaces on very hard hikes, going either up or down. 3.) I've read reviews with discussions relating to toe being pushed or jammed into the front of the boot when going downhill. That would be true for most boots and shoes especially as it gets steeper and those with wide toe boxes. There are ways to tie your boots differently before you head downhill that can mitigate this. This is true with this boot. 4.) I also read a review discussing some lugs from the sole detaching. This happened to me also, I do beat up boots because of where I hike. I used "Shoe Goo'' to reattach them several hikes ago and so far it has worked. 5.) I also hike with Olympus 4 shoes, in places like Sedona, and the desert around Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. These are dry areas and the Olympus 4 are great for that, but a bit of water goes right in. So the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX I thought would be the answer in the Pacific Northwest. Well Gortex or even Event waterproofing has limits, especially for shoes. I've hiked in rain and snow in the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX. Your feet do get wet. It does take awhile to soak through, but after 10 miles in the rain most waterproofing starts failing a little here and there, especially if you add 6 inches of snow. In the PNW we learn to wear proper wet clothing, so I never got uncomfortable in the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX, I didn't even really know I had wet feet. My last hike in the snow and rain, I assumed my feet were getting wet, but didn't know for sure until I took the boot off. That's not true with many other boots and shoes. 6.) While hiking on wet and/or slick surfaces I was surprised and very pleased at the good traction with these boots. Made me like them even more. 7.) For Safety on really slick snow on very steep downhill sections I put on Microspikes, which fit just fine and worked great on the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX. Being very light boots and more flexible than heavier boots I was happy that the microspikes did not cause any undo pleasure or crush any part of the boot. 8.) If the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX does get wet, they dry out pretty easily. 8.) I have custom insoles which I insert into the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX after I pull out the stock insoles. My custom insoles fit just fine and do not negatively affect the fit or the roomy toe box.

I've been waiting for these to come out for a long time and was really excited to test them out on the 40 mile Rae Lakes Loop in Kings Canyon National Park. While on the loop, all I could think about was how to improve these shoes and I arrived at a few conclusions: 1) we basically need mid-height boots to mitigate ankle roll injuries while wearing heavier backpacks, 2) we need wider toe boxes that allow our toes to fully splay to prevent blisters, 3) we need thick zero-drop cushioned mid-soles to dampen the pounding on our feet while wearing heavier backpacks over long distances, and 4) we need full Vibram rubber outsoles with large lugs to prevent slippage on rocks covered by dust or water. The Lone Peak all weather mid hiker was a great attempt, but the midsoles were too thin, and the extra material (e-vent/leather/rubber fabric) narrowed the toe box significantly to the point of preventing full toe-splay, which caused blisters. The new Olympus 5 hike mid GTX provided the extra midsole thickness, but the Vibram outsole had weak glue points causing it to rip off the shoe and the extra material (Gortex/leather/rubber fabric) prevented full toe-splay causing blisters. Also, there were quality control issues with the ankle harness in the store: some (not all) of the ankle harnesses were too thin at the top lace hooks causing pressure pain upon tightening the upper laces. I'll have to return this shoe, but I'll definitely purchase the next version because I believe in the overall design concept. For the next version of this shoe can you please focus on the following? 1) Make the ankle harness more comfortable and functional to mitigate ankle role injuries while wearing heavier backpacks (35-60 lbs), 2) widen the toe box by 3-5 mm at the 5th digit (pinky toe) or add some sort of expandable "pinky toe pouch" to allow for full toe splay to occur, which will prevent blistering, and 3) full surface Vibram outsole tread so that there are no weak spots that will cause the tread to fall off while on the trail. These are the big three! Thanks!

Surprised to see unfavorable reviews. Minor foot injuries linger because of continuous use. These keep your foot securely supported and the cusion/comfort is unmatched! 25+ miles/day now NO PAIN!!!

These are my fourth pair of altras and great as always. I read that these boots run a little smaller/slimmer than the avg altra which is true (probably due to the supportive padding inside). So I got a 1/2 size larger than usual and they fir perfectly. Not to mention the boots are super supportive and help with my typical heel pain.

I have used Altra shoes for road and trail running for years, and I love them. However, the Olympus 5 hikers are simply not dependable, because the treads on the Vibram soles tend to de-laminate. I used my first pair on a week-long backpacking in southern Utah a year ago. I loved the traction, the cushion they provided that minimized the impact on my achy knees, and their waterproofness. However, at trip's end, I noticed that there had been some tread de-lamination on the left boot. I notified Altra, and I was quite happy with their customer service, because they sent me a new pair of boots, and even went above and beyond that. Several weeks ago, I used my replacement pair on a 15-hour up-and-back hike to Pamola Peak on Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park. Granted, the terrain was rough on boots, but, to my dismay, even before I had completed the descent, several treads had de-laminated on both the right and left boots. Therefore, I simply cannot recommend the Olympus 5 hikers for use as a hiking boot. I'm giving two stars only out of my respect for the Altra brand itself, because I have really enjoyed Altra running shoes.

I don't find the fit to be the problem here. I don't have an issue with the sole, at least not yet. My issues are durability and lack of breath-ability. The soles have become chewed up ridiculously fast. I haven't owned them a year, and the foam takes on whatever stain you come across while hiking and has chunks removed. These are too much like road runners, and not enough like actual hiking shoes/boots. There are loose threads throughout. And finally, don't plan on wearing these during summer months. If it is above 70 F degrees, expect a lot sweat and funk to get trapped inside. I dread taking these off at the end of the day due to how bad my feet will smell. Even wearing the thinnest merino wool socks won't help. My feet will be just as soaked if I were to wade barefoot through water.

There is a seam in the ankle support of the shoe that is not flush with the rest of it. It juts out and rubs my ankles pretty bad. Besides that the shoe is awesome but maybe wait till Olympus 6.

After a 4 day mountain run on the oregon coast the soles are already starting to fail. The shoe is comfortable and has a nice wide toe section for my goofy feet. They upper is strong and fairly water proof with the goretex material. The lugs on the sole are garbage. 60mi and the bottoms are already falling apart, for 220 MSRP this is underwhelming. I cannot recommend this shoe for anyone looking to go on big mountain adventures.

These hikers make my feet sing. I have been wearing these all winter long through snow and ice. I am now wearing them on wet, back roads, through the woods, and muddy trails and streams. No need to jump puddles. The shoes were uncomfortable around my ankles at first, but that went away after a few miles. My only hope is that more traditional hiking boot colors will be offered in the future. Life literally would not be the same for me without these Altra's because of my bunions and arthritic feet. Thank you Altra!

After a couple QC hiccups with my past two pairs of altras I took a chance on these and I'm very pleased. I take long hikes in marshy areas and needed something comfy, supportive and waterproof and these are it.

These are my favorite hiking boots! Just bought a my second pair. They are so supportive for something this light. Great cushion. I'm an over 50 backpacker, and these boots have let me increase my mileage as my feet feel so good on the trail. Just love them. Like others, I wish the sole was more durable...I've had the same problem with the treads as others, but I just super glue them back into place. There out to be a way for Altra to fix that, but it's not a big enough problem to affect my 5 start rating.

Trekked in many conditions (no trails), worked in them. Solid in snow & ice. Got 2nd pair 1/2 size up to accommodate thick socks. Btw... Had few lugs delaminate so I employed super glu. Easy fix stop whining

I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE this company to make this boot or the next generation of this boot in all black so Law Enforcement personnel can wear these boots for work. These boots are some of the most comfortable boots I have ever worn but unfortunately I can not wear them to work in which I spend most of my time on my feet. So with that being said, this would absolutely help your company grow in sales if you would make this boot in ALL BLACK. So please please please make a boot that can be worn by Law Enforcement personnel. Thank you!

The vibram mega grip soul has the best traction, stability and flexibility that I have ever experienced in this type of shoe. The shoe construction including the zero drop feature is amazingly comfortable. The toe box is comfortable.

Fits well, had to order a half size larger than I usually wear, but once I got that figured out it was all good. Built really well great cushioning and upper ankle support. I have a flat/wide foot and the Altra is perfect for my feet. I have had several pair and enjoy each of them. No break-in time required, felt great the first time. Put 8 miles on them the first time out with no issues. Headed to Havasupi Falls in 3 weeks and can't wait to put them though their paces.

I read these reviews and wonder what on earth these people are doing to damage these boots. I wear mine (trail only) and live them. No seam issues, no sole release, no problems. Thanks Altra.

I purchased 3 different pairs. VIA Olympus that I use for everyday wear, Olympus 5 Hike GTX that I use on wet hikes, and Olympus 5 Hike GTX Mid that I use for longer wetter hikes when it is raining. All three fit great and hike well. I have not worn any of the tree pairs to address durability and will report later.
