I purchased for jogging. I wear it for walking and jogging. It's very comfortable. I prefer the standard fit when jogging, lessens knee pain.

I wear this shoe as Altra designers intended: for mixed-surface, dry runs and it has not disappointed. I find the rubber to be well-suited for theses types of runs as it is not too-soft nor too hard. The mid-sole has enough cushion for my mid-length runs (13-18 miles) yet doesn't feel too cushioned for shorter runs. I haven't experienced significant midsole deterioration at 250 miles and feel confident I will get another 100 before they are retired. (Note that in order to optimize midsole performance, I rotate several pairs of shoes and give each pair at least 48 hours of midsole-rest between runs.) The uppers are still in good condition and only show normal wear-and-tear.

I own several pairs of Altras and this so far is my favorite. I usually walk 8-10 miles a day, 7 days a week. These made my toes numb for the first 3-4 days but once they were broken in, they have been awesome. I recently had back surgery so I'm off the road and trail for a bit but these are the only shoes i can wear post surgery due to the cushion in the sole. Anything else kills my back. I also love the color (I got the darker teal color) as it seems to blend well with any pair of jeans I have in the closet.

These Timps are near perfect. I have a narrow mid foot and these fit much more snug than the Lone Peaks that I had precious been in. I still have plenty of room in the toe box and they also offer more underfoot comfort in my opinion and feel lighter. I love the quick draining feature. I ran a 50k in these with several creek crossings and didn't have a single blister or feel weighed down with water. My only complaint is that the lugs and tread seem under agressive and wore down after just 200 miles. I didn't feel safe running technical trails in them so had to get a fresh pair for my event and save the old pair for running on roads/gravel. A big fail in my opinion. I hope they can put on a more durable and agressive lug for the next version. They will be unmatched.

I have an older version of lone peaks that fit like a glove. I was looking for a bit more cushion for hiking. I tried them on in the store and they were comfy right out of the box. The only thing that took some getting used to is the tongue as it is a bit scratchy at the point where your ankle bends into it. Once broken in a bit I haven't noticed it.

If I ever win the lottery I would seriously pay Altra to make me a lifetime supply of the absolutely perfect Timp 1.5 because the subsequent versions have been AWFUL. But the Timp 4 feels like the 1.5 has finally been resurrected. As soon as I slipped them on in the store I knew I'd be walking out in them despite the $30 increase in price. I'm not crazy about the tongue...it slips to the side, and the top edge is sharp and could be bothersome if you wear low socks which I don't. The loop at the heel is now big enough to actually slip a finger in which I love. And the nice cushy feel of the earlier Timp has returned. I plan to buy another pair soon for insurance in case next year's Timp 5 is awful.

So I have had Timps for several years now and I LOVE them. But the tongue on the new Timp 4 is absolutely awful. It actually left a horrible blister on the front of my ankle. Returned and got the Timp 3 again. Please get rid of that ridged tongue and go back to the soft one with the next version!! Other than the tongue issue, the shoe is still great and I love it!!

I love these shoes. Very comfortable. However, the tongues keeping sliding off to the outside of the shoe. This is my first pair of Altas.

One of the only problems with this shoe is the tongue. It’s quite sharp and digs into your leg.

Overall love the Timp shoe. This is a replacement for my Timp 2, which I have worn out because I love them so much. I wish I could try an 11.5, but only whole sizes are offered. Also not sure about the new tongue on the Timp 4 — seems to come up a bit higher, and it's stiffer than the Timp 2 fabric. Still one of my most comfortable shoes for casual and active wear.

I wore these for the first time on an absolutely brutal hike with lots of rock climbing, loose gravel, sand, and elevation gains. Zero break in required. My one gripe is if you make use of all the eyelets for the laces, the tongue slips down and to the side. I had to make several unplanned stops to fix the situation.

I wanted to love this shoe! I ordered a half size up and it fit perfectly. The shoe was really comfortable but unfortunately the tongue cut into my ankle. I decided to return it because if this.

I was excited to try Altra shoes because I've heard great things about their comfort for walking. These shoes are just OK. Not super comfortable. Not worth the price. Based on the other reviews, things have changed. I tested about 4 other pair and they were either too wide, narrow, or uncomfortable. This is the one that fit and I wish I would have returned them, too, because they're not great. There aren't many options for standard width and high cushion, and forget it if you want a weatherproof shoe. Apparently only wide feet don't need water in their shoes.

I love so many things about this shoe: the fabric, the lovely green/peach color, zero drop soles, room for my toes (I wear toe spreaders), but sadly, Altra still just hasn't figured out women's feet. Timps are the only Altra the back half of my feet doesn't slosh around in, but even with these the heel is still very loose and I have to tighten the laces like crazy in the mid-foot to get them hang on my feet at all. I do not have especially narrow feet and Altras are the only running shoe brand that is so off in the fit for me. I'm also a former bare-footer, so would prefer a more minimal, less padded shoe than the Timp, but all other Altras with less padding are like clown shoes on me. I tossed my Escalantes after twisting my ankle from sloshing around inside the shoe. The length of these and all Altras tends to be too short and much too wide. On a quality note: the inside back of Timps tends to wear out in very quickly, but I think that's at least partly because my heels have been rubbing all that time. Hope Altra figures out a shoe that fits women's feet some day. I love the concept, but just can do that ultra-wide mid-foot/heel-slosh thing. The fit may work for someone else, especially if you have very wide, short feet or are a guy.

Bought these in August to hike the Wisconsin Way (aka Cheddar Camino) These are very comfortable and cushiony. Felt really good with wright socks. Big drawback is the wearing away of the inner lining so fast - have put about 100 miles on them .

These shoes look very stylish however they feel a size too short. I ordered the size that was given to me from the size chart, which is my regular size. However, the tip of my toe was hitting the front edge of the shoe! I would need to go up a whole size! There is plenty of toe room though and perhaps too much room in the toe area. Also, there is no arch support whatsoever. The soul feels totally flat. Although, the underfoot cushion is very thick. But , there is no spring in my step when I tried walking in them. My foot would definitely feel fatigued quite fast. And this would definitely aggravate my plantar fasciitis!! So I returned.

I have owned 2 pairs of Timp 2's in sz 8. I prefer it's standard size footbed for the shape and size of my foot. I have an average foot with a narrow heel. I did try an Altra with the narrower footbed but I didn't like the shoe.
I have found that the Lone Peaks are just too wide for me but are doable in the mids instead of low tops. However, I liked the Timp 2's. They fit my foot better and the trail sole was as close to the Lone Peaks as could be. I decided to try the Timp 4's. I was able to get a pair at a good discounted price. I am not sure that I totally like them. It seems like they are revamped to be more like a Hoka shoe with more cushion. I had some discomfort when I first started wearing them. The joint at my big toe on one foot continues to feel like I bruised it. I can't say that it is the shoe that caused this but it is coincidental. I have continued to walk and hike in them but I'm not convinced I will stick with them. I liked the minimalist fit of the Timp 2's and I believe there is more drop. The soles are holding up on the Timp 4's but definitely wearing down after over 6 months of use. I will say that walking on gravel roads does not help the wear and tear. There is some fraying on the outside edged near the decal. Other factors in wear we all need to consider is a person's weight.
One of the biggest drawbacks to Altra's is the cost and length of durability. However, using a shoe made of anything other than leather because it is lightweight just isn't going to last as long backpacking because of added weight. As for the weatherproof Lone Peaks, what you gain in comfort will be displaced by the loss of warmth in colder conditions that leather can provide. It boils down to what you are willing to sacrifice for cost, durability and longevity.

The Timp 4 has been the most comfortable running shoe for me however: the tread wore down super fast, inside the heel is ripping apart, fabric on top toe box area is pulling apart and all of this happened faster than any other Altra model I've used. I was thinking about another pair until I actually read multiple reviews from people with all the same issues. It's a recurring investment but I want them to last longer than these have. What do you suggest?

I love these shoes and have recommended them to several people. Now that they are 7 months old and the heel area has worn down on both shoes, as have the outside of the toe area, I'm no longer pleased. I walk, no running, on trial and road. Averaged 1.5 miles per day, during this time frame.

I have very wide feet and love Altras since I discovered them. These (4s) are the most comfortable so far. Durability, however, is surprisingly poor. The later aspect on one foot began tearing within a month, and my bigs toes poked through shortly after. They are trashed now (maybe 200 mi hiking- a lot just fire roads) I am torn as they are still so comfortable- would love another pair but trying to wait for the 5s with the hope the material will be more durable

I love the previous temp models and have purchased a LOT of them, but I was really bummed to get this model and have the new tongue design cut into my ankle unless I wear high socks. So strange...why make a plastic material so high up? Wish I could still find the former models.

I'm not sure why Altra decided to change the design of the tongue on these shoes, but it is now made out of the material that pokes into my ankles when I run. I have to pull the tongue way off to the side to keep it from rubbing. I was definitely more of a fan of the Timp 3.

I have been a TIMP fan for years and have worn both the TIMP 2 and 3 for backpacking, hiking, and trail running and always loved them. The TIMP 4 is different, does not feel like the others in terms of zero drop and they feel more narrow. What I don't like though, is how fast the tread wares down. I wore them for the first time on an 8 day, 100 mile backpacking trip through the Wind River Range and my tread looks like my TIMP 3s after about 300 miles backpacking in South America. The toe and sides are also not as durable as previous versions and already have wear showing on the toes and sides. Not nearly as good as past models, I wish Altra would stop trying to make things better, the 3s were great as they were.

I have bought every new style of timps including this pair and the 4s are vastly different from the rest. I bought a pair of the torins with a similar tongue before purchasing these and was satisfied. The torins have a 1/4in of softness around the edge of the tongue but these do not. Im not sure how this got through product testing because it is horrible. I never write reviews but I thought this was a noticeable change that had I known I would not have purchased.
