You know that wonderful aroma of oiled leather? The supple feel of soft leather in your hands?
These moccasins do not offer that.
These come out of the box stiff as cardboard. They will eventually soften up- I am wearing my old ones (with holes in the sole) as I type.
But the killer is that they STINK! Literally. An overpowering odor of a leather processing product (formaldehyde would be my guess) permeates the box and the moccasins.
I tried oiling them, and even set them outside in direct summer sun for a week or more, literally, figuring the sun would drive out these volatile chemical smells. After TWO WEEKS, I give up. Leaving them in my closet overnight after all that still made the closet stink as bad as if it had mothballs. So back they go.
I have worn two pair of these for over 10 years each, and also a pair from another brand for another 10 years or so- i.e. I've worn moccasins like these all my adult life. I recently received these, my fourth pair.
My third pair (shown- this model from LL Bean) was made in El Salvador as these are. I remember that they took forever to break in, and that they had an odor. But I don't remember them being anything as bad as these.
Sadly this kills a soft spot in my life's history (pun intended), but I'll go for a completely different product and probably from another company. Think about it- this is bad enough to make a long-time customer give up.
If you can tolerate the odor and the very long break-in period, these might serve you as well as my old ones (pictured). The uppers are still fine- one of them needs a new sole, after ten or more years of predominantly indoor wear. But unless you are very patient and tolerant of chemical odors you might want to consider another product.

I purchased a pair of the double-sole slippers in July 2016, received them on July 27th. I wore these slippers in the house on carpet and vinyl floors. I also wore these in the basement on our smooth painted cement floor. In November I noticed the sole on my right slipper was wearing and by the end of December it has a hole through to a white material. These should last longer than 5 months. My left slipper's sole looks good, other than a few scuff marks it is nearly in new condition. Looks like the last time I will be buying L. L. Bean footwear made in El Salvador or anywhere other than Maine. Very disappointed in the quality, not the same as my old L. L. Bean slippers.

Attractive, well made, soft leather; great indoor shoe. So comfortable, you'll forget that you're wearing them. My spouse won't wear anything else. I buy him a new pair every 18 months. Wish LLBean offered a resole option for these, as the leather sole wears out long before the upper shoe. That's a minor issue compared to having happy feet.

Very comfortable and durable. Nothing compares, really. This is my fourth pair, all leather-lined, and the quality has been consistent. Well done!

They were great until our puppy ate one of the slippers to the point it could no longer be worn. So don't accidentally leave your slippers around puppies when your not home. Expensive lesson to learn.

I wear a 10.5 and tried on the 10 and the 11. I was wearing thick socks and the 10 felt a bit snug and the 11 a bit loose. Very happy with my choice of sizing down. After breaking them in for a few weeks they fit perfect, the leather has stretched a bit and molded to my feet. These slippers will stretch so start with a tighter fit and expect a perfect in just a few weeks!
Are you tired of of your laces coming untied every few days? Add a few drops of super glue to the underside of the knot. It's unnoticeable and stay tied for years!

Love the slippers, but took 3 times to get the correct size. I followed all the sizing protocol correctly and the protocol had me purchase a size 12. I ultimately needed a 10 after sending the 12 back for an 11 and then the 11 for the 10 which ws the correct size. Zappos handled the return timely, but only allows for one exchange... which I totally understand, but sometiing needs to be done to get the sizing chart to size more accurately. Love the shoes though.

I've been wearing the LL Bean moccasins since 1965. At that time they were not double sole or leather lined, and if you stood on a nickel you could read the date through the sole of the slipper. Nonetheless, the LL Bean moccasins are my favorite, and unequaled by anyone. However, the new double sole, leather lined moccasins are even better then the originals, and obviously wear longer then the originals. However, my observation is that typically one of a new pair of moccasins seem wear out a year or more before the second moccasin wears through the leather sole, which I think is a problem. Solution, the manufacturer should gauge the thickness of all leather used in the moccasin sole and sole overlay to reduce the frequency of "thinner leather" pieces being used, especially in the outer over sole. With the existing faulty construction being used, LL Bean Company should reinstitute the moccasin rebuild service for a nominal customer fee, ie $30.00.

Brought these to replace my 15 year old Buffalo version. They would still be going strong if I had not occasionally worn them across the street to get the mail! (My bad.) This is my third pair.

This was my 3rd or 4th pair of moccasin's (slippers) that I've bought and they have never varied in quality. Maybe a little stiff at the beginning but then they mold comfortably to your feet. I tend to wear them outside at times and the leather will wear out, but they're double soled so they're not a total blow-out, ie. still good for indoors. A good value overall.

I've had lots of moccasins, and these are by far the best. I have both versions. The buffalo hide are soft right out of the box. The cowhide are a bit stiffer, but a walk in the wet morning grass will de-glaze the soles and mold them to your feet for a perfect fit.

The double layer of leather on the bottom really adds to the overall comfort of this slipper. A nice look and a nice feel.

After three days they are the best slippers ever. The way they wipe clean after getting the mail from outside is great. No more slippery than bare feet.

High quality leather. Well crafted. Very stiff, will require some break in. I used Neets Foot oil to speed break in. The leather seems to have been treated with some sort of sealant because the exterior didn't accept the Neets Foot oil very well. I got the best break in results when I rubbed the oil on the insides.
