Initial thoughts after 2 workouts (mile repeats, cutdown intervals) and 1 longer progression run:
- More stack than the Speed Elite without increasing much weight.
- Hyperburst is bouncy and fun like the Razor line, but much more aggressive in the forefoot. Midfoot striking is rewarded BIG TIME on foot strike. It feels more like it's pulling you forward, rather than springing you upward.
- No issues with traction or making turns despite the high stack (36mm / 32mm).
- LOVE the 4mm drop. Perfect for me, but not perfect for everyone.
- Unlike the Speed Elite, the Speed Freek allows for slower paces (like warm-ups, cool downs, and recovery jogs) without feeling awkward at all. This makes it an excellent option for workouts and long runs too, if that's your thing. I will more often grab the Razor Excess for that purpose to extend the shelf life of this shoe. While I do not have any signs of wear just yet, durability could be a concern from the large amount of exposed Hyperburst.
- The upper is the biggest negative, as it can rub the top of your first metatarsal if you have a higher volume foot. Not a huge issue, but keep it in mind if you scoop this shoe. A little vaseline on the first metatarsal pre-run solved that for me.
- Fit is true to size, but I would go a half size up if you intend on training in it often rather than saving it more racing.

A few days before the Blueberry Cove Half Marathon, I had take the Speed Freeks for a three or four-mile run. So, essentially, I wore the for a race almost new out of the box, which, yes, I know folks shouldn't do, but people still pee on electric fences, and wearing new shoes for a race has to be the lesser of those two evils.
Here's the good:
The Hyperburst cushion offered good feel, and the bounce reminds you of having a couple of Australian sheepdog puppies tethered to your toes. The breathability seemed good. The lack of a heel counter feels unusual for a half mile, but then is forgotten. Lockdown is, otherwise, good. Traction never faltered. Most important, the shoes never weighed me down; I never felt that they held me back.
However, both left and right shoe began cutting along the inside of my feet, just behind the big toes, at around mile nine or ten. The last miles were tough enough with the blisters.
Now, that said, I had run this race once before before the pandemic, and I was 13 seconds per mile faster. There were a thousand other variables, but the shoes ran smoothly and with enough spring that I have to give some credit to the shoes.
I've run the shoes in some five and ten-kilometer races since, with only a hint of rubbing in the same spots. Still, I wonder if the insole could be responsible for some of the irritation. Winter's barely over, but I'll test them on a few shorter races before the next half marathon.

I used these shoes recently in the Boston Marathon to great results. My initial impression was that the heel counter was too weak/flimsy but after the first mile, it was not noticeable at all. It seems like a lot of complaints about this feature really have not put it to the test since the shoe feels great once you get going a mile or so. The Hyperburst is firm and snappy and the carbon plate does a good job of supporting the natural stride while not forcing, like some other brands. For longer runs (marathon) I thought that the foam could have been a little softer underfoot as my legs felt pretty beat up after 26,2 miles, however I did not notice this to be a problem while I was running. Take the time to break these in a bit before racing in them as there may be some areas where different foot profiles could develop some rubbing. Overall the extra stack height was very well executed and these shoes feel very natural on the foot.

I am a diabetic and have to be careful when buying shoes. These seem to be shorter than a 13.
