The back and shoulder straps of this backpack are very stiff to the point of being very uncomfortable. Other than that, the backpack looks well-made and has many pockets. I really wanted to like this but unfortunately, I needed to return it because of the discomfort.

It is very cool and has that modern look that NorthFace always creates. I received this Surge backpack as a gift from my husband for Christmas. He chose the black with rose gold to match my rose gold wedding ring and my rose gold iPhone. He knows how much I like that color. It is a very spacious backpack for what I need. I don't have a reason or desire to have a lot of things with me. The multiple pockets and organization compartments makes it easy to stay organized. I will be carrying this backpack with my giant laptop to school and work. I am often made fun of for my 15" by 10" giant laptop but you will rest assured that your laptop will fit if mine does. If you have a larger laptop than that, it will not fit. My laptop has zero space left. The only con I could maybe see with this backpack is how heavy, stiff and ridged the back material is. I could also see the stiff and ridged material to be a pro because it will hold up and also assist in better posture when hiking. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I am mine.

My son got the men's Surge last summer and it has worked well for his college life and traveling. Based on his experience, I got my Women's Surge Backpack in time for a ten day roadtrip vacation. I loved the strap across the chest and around the race for walking at a quick pace, while staying on my shoulders. It works perfectly as an extra carry on for an airplane, fitting well under a seat. Now that I am back to the everyday, it carries my computer and work supplies, making the daily commute comfortably.

There is tons of pockets and it is very durable. I would use it to carry books/computer. Carrying it around can make your back sore by the end of the day. Overall would recommend.

I used this backpack while I was at an overnight camp, it was great quality and it can hold a ton of stuff, there are so many compartments. The one complaint is that it slightly made my neck sore.

I just got this backpack so I can only speak for two weeks of use. I've only carried it no longer than a few minutes each time but so far it has been comfortable. I like that the straps are shaped for women. Works great for carrying my laptop. The previous backpack I owned (Melinda) seemed to be built tougher overall and with a larger main compartment. I'm up for the challenge to see this backpack outlast my previous.

I travel for work, so I needed something that was stylish, had loads of pockets/storage for different types of things, two water bottle holders, and ideally dedicated padded spaces for computer/tablet. I can hold all the pens I want, snacks, my water bottle and my tea tumbler, my laptop, tablet, and a few books. It doesn't expand much so even full it can slide under the seat in front of me on a plane. It is *almost* perfect. I have had my bottles slide out of the pockets - one time from an overhead compartment which was very scary - so I would prefer some friction to the pocket, or a way to keep them in better. My bag also gets heavy, and although I'm not hiking with it, I would love the waist belt to be thicker so it does more to distribute the weight. The large fleece lined zipper compartment at the top is a nice bonus spot for things that I don't want to compress too much. I also have not experienced a "stand-up design", which would be great when I have to put the bag on the floor in an airport restroom. Instead it has fallen forward even though my heaviest items are along the back. Overall it has been a solid backpack and I am happy with my purchase, but would 100% spend the money again if there was a thicker waist belt.

Overall, recommend. Very good construction, quality materials, and tons of pockets! I think there are definitely areas for improvement, such as the water bottle sleeves on the side lacking any kind of strap or elastic to secure items in there. I was initially disappointed because I ordered a new backpack but clearly received one that was slightly used (stains, etc.) and even found someone's passport inside one of the pockets! TNF customer service was accommodating and sent me another, and I use it everyday and enjoy it.

I loved all the compartments. Unfortunately, the straps are stiff & uncomfortable, they didn't lie down well. The padding on the back is too bulky. Finally, the pack didn't stand up as advertised.

The amount of foam padding and different compartments makes it challenging to fully use the volume, because there isn't one large pocket. As someone using it primarily for school, not hiking, fewer, larger compartments may have been more useful. The quality of the backpack overall is great though.

I use this backpack for work and carrying my very large and heavy laptop. I think the back support is great and the protection for the laptop is strong. However, it's a very tight/skinny bag. So my laptop just barely fits and there isn't much room for bulkier things (like a lunch or jacket, etc.), unless you stuff it in there.

Well constructed and sturdy, but too many small and medium sized compartments. My daughter needed something with a large main compartment for school books and notebooks, and this did not fit the bill. We returned the backpack.

I love the color, all the pockets and spaces. But i wish I could open the main pocket all the way to take advantage of its space (seems that the zipper creates a funnel, kind of like an hour glass). Also, one of the straps broke off less than a month after I purchased it. Unfortunately, although they said I could send it back to get checked out for warranty etc, I am overseas and now and sending it back could potentially make me lose more money (shipping); and it would be a lose-lose situation if north face were to not change it for a new one, for whichever reason. So I counted my loses and kept it with the broken strap :(
Hopefully you'll have better luck with yours! (Just make sure to have a look at the zipper/funnel situation before you buy it!!)

After adding all of my college supplies to the backpack, I tried it on and after less than 3 minutes, I felt pain on my shoulders and neck. Once I took it off my neck and shoulders still felt sore. I bought some cushiony straps ($21) to make the backpack more comfortable, and it only helped a bit. I thought to myself, is a backpack that cost me a total of $162 with the modifications really worth it just for it not to cover my needs as a college commuter? And no. It isn't. Returning.

I bought this for my daughter 1 Christmas ago. She wears her school back pack on both shoulders. This fabric covering the foam shoulder strap started to come off due to the seam giving way. She carries a chrome book and 3 paper folders in her back pack. I sent it to be fixed under warranty. It was just returned to me as not covered under warranty due to "improper use". TNF touts a lifetime warranty but if regualr things are not covered what good is it?? $140 is a lot for a back pack but WORSE for one whose company does not stand behind their product.

The straps have seams that are super itchy and are not very flexible. Literally had marks from the seams within 2 minutes when wearing with a tank-top. I really wanted to love this backpack, but it just wasn't meant to be.
I also am 5'2, and don't think this is made for someone under 5'5.
