My Brother-in-law wears Nike forever. I bought him the "Salomon X Ultra 4" he was so Amazed at the Fit, comfort, arch support and tread design. He is an avid Golfer and looks forward to wearing them. He also likes to walk and after his first (2) Days he is converted from the DARK SIDE to the best Shoe made.
I'd also recommend:
My wife an I wear Salomon for the Past (3) years after our son bought me my first pair

I have also used the XA Pro and at first wasn't sure what the difference would be between the XA Pro and the X Ultra, with the Ultra being considered a little more of a hiking shoe. In case it helps, I find that the Ultra seems to have a little more technical fit than the Pro, though I don't find them to be lower volume or really tighter, though the Pros may have a slightly wider toebox.
So far I really like my Ultras. I haven't really done anything extreme in them, but have worn them while camping, on shorter hikes, and while mountain biking and they have been great. They seem to breathe pretty well and have good comfort and support. I also surprisingly found that I like the little fabric tab in the back, which I think helps to get them on a little easier.

I've had these shoes a little over a month. I only wear Salomon shoes, so I knew they would be great, and they are the best shoes I own, to date.

Love the lacing system. Plenty of toe room.

I live in Sedona and hike dry technical, steep trails every day. I've gone through a lot of shoes trying to find the right one for my terrain that keep me safe and comfortable. These are the best I've tried.
Pros: My foot and heel stay locked in and don't roll in the shoe. Better than any other brand I've tried.
The stiffer sole, compared to trail runners, helps reduce my metatarsal pain form over-flexing on steep and very long distances.
The soles grip like climbing shoes, I'm sticking to nearly vertical rock and love the confidence and safety they give me.
I didn't expect this but I love the speed lacing. When I put them on, with the stiff heel cup, my foot just pops in without folding it down. I don't have to spend time trying to loosen dusty laces. And when I'm done for the day, just unlock and slide out. With traditional shoes and a heel lock lacing pattern, it is a pain to loosen them to get in and out. This was a very pleasant surprise and didn't know I'd love it so much.
Cons: There's no easy way to tuck the laces after tightening. The little pocket meant to hold them is useless since the top lace goes over it and make it inaccessible. Surprised this was missed during any testing. Seems like an obvious flaw.
The uppers don't feel like they are going to hold up very long. I can live with this and would rather replace a shoe more often if it fits well.

I was prepared to like these as I always liked Salomon ski boots. They are attractive and appear to be a good lighter weight hiking shoe. They might be great for someone who really wants arch support. I marked it as "Excellent". But, my feet are flatter and I found the arch support too aggressive. I opted for a pair of Propet.

I bought these to replace some X Ultra Aeros that I loved, but unfortunately are not made anymore. I was hesitant because I really wanted a mid height boot without any waterproofing but at the moment Salomon doesn't offer anything like that. The low cut is comfortable for around town, but if I need to go out into the woods I will switch to a different boot with a higher cut.
These are very comfortable and lightweight, and they breathe very good in the hot and humid weather.
The quicklaces...are not the best. The idea is okay, but the buckle/clasp/whatever they call the mechanism that is supposed to keep the laces tight is not very good. It loosens up all the time. The laces themselves are also really long, so by the time you tighten them there is a ton of extra lace you have to try to tuck into the little pocket thing on the tongue.
It was an interesting idea...but it seems like a solution to something that wasn't really a problem to begin with...
I got them on sale and even with the laces I'm happy with them. If I had paid full price...I would be less happy.

I have well over 100 miles on these. Like all the salomon boots/shoes I have used over the last 20+ years they are comfortable right out of the box. My only issue is the lacing system. Unless you don't know how to tie your shoes I don't see the point. It's faster and easier to use regular laces. At least these stay tight, unlike other quick lace products I've used in the past.

A good, well made shoe. The flap that hides the laces is toooo tight. This never used to be a problem until my last three purchases.

I have bought two pair of these shoes. What I like: great comfort and stability when hiking. Also the goretex seems to last longer than the ultra 3. What I don't like: the floating tongue make the shoe difficult to put on. Also the Achilles heal protector is too long and is not made out of durable material so I ended up with a hole in both feet. I hope the x ultra 5 fixes these two problems.

I used to hike with typical Danner military boots, all the time. But this pair of shoes are my very first hiking shoes. They are so comfortable and so lightweight, with so much ventilation. I doubt if I will ever go back to the conventional boots anymore. The grip is insane for both mud and dry rock, and the mid foot locks to the terrain with zero foot roll. It give me some much confidences.
I took off one star because after 4 miles of mountain hiking, my right ankle bone hurts a lot due to constant pressing against the heel cup. I have a low ankle bone and got problems with shoes that have high heel-cups. So if you have low ankle bone like me, you might need some break-in.

I am 73 and have found over the past 20 years that only Salomon trail running and hiking shoes support my feet well enough for all-day wear. My daily wear needs are for walking and yard work, as well as shopping. Salomon X Ultras simply make my feet feel good. I have two pairs, a 4-yr-old black low goretex pair and a 6-yr-old green mid goretex pair. Both were made in india. I also have a 10-yr-old low blue XA Pro 30, size 10, which I still use for more casual wear (made in Vietnam).
I really needed a brown shoe for wear with lighter-colored shoes, so ordered this brown X Ultra 4 which is not goretex. It fits perfectly in size 10.5 same as my two newest pairs.
My only disappointment is that the shoe has a hard insole, which is tougher on the soles of my feet. The reason appears to be the composition of the insole material which is below the Ortholite insole. In my older shoes that layer is a somewhat squishy blue material. In this new brown pair, made in Cambodia, the layer under the Ortholite insole is a pretty stiff and hard light-colored material which does not give much.
Luckily, I have been able to compensate for that by wearing thicker socks.
The shoe is a keeper and the sole will hopefully soften a biyt as I break it in.

I gave these the ultimate test in wearing them from new for a long hike over 31 days, through rough terrain and mixed weather. 31km per day. Most importantly: the fit and performance were off the charts good. I was the only member of our large cohort to experince zero foot issues, blisters etc. The only reason I drop a star is that they started to split after day twenty, both boots in the same place, which points to a design issue. By the end they were unusable but they did get me to Santiago!!

Very light and comfortable, one thing that stands out is the ventilation of the upper. I wear these several days throughout the week and very pleased with the quality.

This is my fifth pair of Salomon's, but the first ourchased in about 4 years. All earlier shoes were found in retail stores where I could try them on. Pairs 2-thru-4 are all still in use, but showing wear. Pair #2 is a XA Pro 3D (size 10) with Quicklace. Pair #3 is my work boot, an X Ultra GoreTex mid height (size 10.5) with regular laces. Pair #4 (my best fit) is an X Ultra GoreTex (size 10.5) with quicklaces.
I needed a brown pair of casual shoes and decided Salomon X Ultra would be the brand, based on their ability to fit perfectly and provide all-day-wear support. I also love the Quicklaces because I have had one hip replaced 11 years ago and the other is getting stiff. These are easy to reach and secure.
This pair arrived two days ago and I have given them wear around the house and around the 1-mile walking path in town, two days in a row. They are a great color and the size 10.5 fit around my foot is still perfect, but THEY ARE HARD ON MY 73-year-old FEET. I wore a better pair of socks on day #2 and they felt a bit better, but I have discovered the "problem". My old black X Ultra with Quicklaces had a much better made Ortholite insole; however, the real issue is below that removable insole. The older pair (made in India) also had a slightly soft and springy layer on the insole. The new brown pair (made in Cambodia) has a very hard plastic insole which feels like concrete when walking briskly. Guess I'll have to invest in some extra pads for the balls of my feet.
A younger person might not even notice this. I will keep the shoe since in every other way they are just what I expected. I doubt that I will ever again buy Salomion's online; I will reserve my shopping for the oddball occasion when I am in a city large enough to have an outdoor sporting gods store large enough to stock a few Salomon's in-store.

I went from Speedcross 3 to theses as my hiking/trail boot. I wanted something a little thicker with more support and went with the X Ultra. I prefer a low cut shoe and really like the quick laces. I wore these shoes from Lukla to Everest Base Camp, in the Grand Canyon, as well as many other hikes in the southwest. Unfortunately the laces broke on a hike in Colorado last weekend. The soles were wearing low so I knew it was about time for new shoes.

Review of Salomon X Ultra 04 hiking shoes, 7/30/23: I used a pair for two years, and replaced them with the same model (presumably slightly changed) May 25, 2023. A perfect fit for my feet, both times. The spaciousness at the front end means no problems for my bunions, and the stiff sole has prevented a recurrence of plantar fasciitis. The shoes' traction is very good, though not as good on snow as a pair of boots I use in the winter. The shoes are durable, overall. The first pair lasted for some 1500 mi. on a trail I take every day. But I have a bone to pick with the new pair: after just two months, the outer covering of the lace for the right shoe has been stripped. I expect the lace to fail soon. Unacceptable! --And even so, I'll probably buy a third pair of these shoes when these are shot, if they're still available. Shoes that fit comfortably and incur no injuries are hard to find.

I returned to Soloman after a pair of Adidas Goretextrainers which let me down. As ever, these Solomons are very high quality and offer good support without compromising comfort. My only issue is it is difficult to get the quick-lace laces into the pocket on the tongue once they've been tightened. Loosening them allows the laces to be tucked in, but then it's hard to tighten them again!
A minor point, but one which is annoying.
