These lasted me 8 months before I decided to phone them in (literally called customer service). At about the 6 month mark they were becoming unbearable to hike in, with the balls of my feet developing something akin to a sandpaper rubbing. I eventually found out the insoles had practically worn through. And, when I removed them, there was... surprise... dirt and sand. Mystery solved I suppose. Moral of that is, the insoles are bad. Buy a pair of reputed third-party insoles. Next up was the goretex, which eventually tore (this was in the crease on both side on both shoes). There was no keeping the water out after this. The shoe lace hooks are not ideal. I can think of only one time where my shoes did not get untied. It was always annoying to have to stop and tie them. Overall, not super great build quality for 6-8 months and price.
I do have to say that customer service was superb. Contrary to what I have seen, Salmon does stand by their products. I'd recommend them for that. Just not this particular shoe.

Nice, tidy, lightweight mid height boots but the sole is ridiculously soft and flexible for hiking boots. In fact my Mizuno road running shoes have firmer soles! How Salomon can rate these as suitable for technical trails is beyond me. I strongly dispute that assessment. On the trail every single rock, stone, you name it protrudes through to the sole of your foot. After a few hours it gets painful. In fact you can push your finger into the sole and feel it come through on the inside. The best use in my opinion is smooth trails and and maintained paths... where a shoe would suffice.

I have worn the X Ultra 2, 3, and now 4 for hiking/backpacking and work. The X Ultra 4 is a very different shoe than the 2 or 3. It is lighter in weight and much more flexible in the sole and body. However it also offers less protection and support. It looks less durable too, but I haven't had any issues yet. It is just as comfortable as the 3 but feels lighter duty. Depending on your needs, this may be the shoe you're looking for. Personally I preferred the X Ultra 3 with its additional support and protection.

These fit me well. However their claim of "Cushion: regular" should be minimal/light. Foot protection as well. I'm not sure if the pursuit of weight savings have left these shoes with sever limitations or what? Even walking on tar I can feel every contour of the road through my feet. I'd rather have heavier shoes that protected my feet. Good for short hikes on smooth tracks only.

I bought these a month ago and usually go half a size larger to accommodate for thicker socks in the winter. (I'm a size 10 in everything but go for 10.5 in hiking boots).
The first time using them one foot had pain after as if they where to narrow and tight on my foot. Since then I have loosened the laces and I still get this problem and other areas on both feet rubbing and hurting.
I've never had to get a wide foot in the past or been classed as having wide feet but may have to look at the wide fit for future.
Other than that they look good and have not leaked yet, just a shame about the fit.

I loved my Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid Gore Tex boots that took me to the bottom of Havasu Creek and to the top of the White Mountains' Presidential Range. I've tried Merrell, Keen, Oboz, and felt that I'd found my boot. (I use Salomon ski boots too!) After lots of use, I was excited to upgrade to the X Ultra 4.
First impressions out of the box were great - that Salomon style that I like, and these felt light. They're now my "everyday" boots for out on the trail. Unfortunately, I've found a couple of things that seemed inferior to the previous version.
First, the new lacing structure makes it hard for me to get the upper snug, and as a result I feel like I get less support around my ankles (and they rub awkwardly on my ankles). This inferior support is really noticeable when going down a descent. Second, the foot bed just feels harder and less comfortable; I'm considering getting some insoles, but I don't like adding anything that might slip or wrinkle into my hiking boots. My 3s and this 4 share another small problem - the sole is great in the summer but seems, to me, to be slippery when it's cold and wet. If there was an overnight frost, I select a different pair of boots.
These are very good boots. Check the 3s vs the 4s and see what you think - newer isn't always better, but I'll be waiting to see what Salomon revises in the 5.

Very pleased with my purchase, the looked great and seam really well.
Unfortunately when I used them on a 10 mile Hike I found the top lace clip really uncomfortable as it dug in to my ankle.
Various attempts to solve the problem proved unsuccessful and when I tried not using these top clips I found the boot seemed unstable. I think the padding internally is insufficient or the lace pulls the clip to an angle that causes the problem.
I also thought the sole is thin as I could clearly feel small rocks when walking tracks
Really disappointed now and have not worn them since

Just received my pair and the initial first impressions send off some flags. White dye/paint over spray from the shoe body on the black toecaps, glue smear on the outside seams, stitching fraying. If this is Salomon's QC of the line it makes one worried about them even holding up

I bought these and love the design of them and how the ankle support is stiff but not restricting. However I am warning you that they are NOT true to size! If you like a snug boot, consider going down a half size.

When I first got these boots I loved them. I've been wearing them as my daily footwear for 4 months now and after walking around in wet grass for 5 minutes my feet are soaked. Waterproofing didn't last very long. Disappointed :/

Bought this a month ago hoping for a similar experience experience as the X Ultra 3 with goretex but this pair is a disappointment. Manufacturer has clearly changed and quality and comfort has gone down.

Wish I could return them. The awkward mid-height digs in and rubs on uneven ground (not noticed walking around the flat store). Have tried them a couple times, every time I can't wait to get home and take them off. Unfortunate, but probably won't end up wearing them. That said, my wife loves hers. Personally, I will avoid mid height from now on.

I live in Wisconsin and walk dogs a lot. I wanted these to be my to be my waterproof, winter walking boot.
I've worn the low top version of this shoe forever and LOVED them... until the last couple version. It seems like the shoes got less comfortable, cheaper and fell apart quick. I took a flyer on this boot version because the price was right (on sale through a warehouse) and I reeeeally wanted them to make me as happy as the old versions. Nope. I keep waiting for them to get comfortable and stop rubbing and poking my feet but it's not happening. The uppers just don't fit right, rub and put pressure where it's not needed. Again, I've probably had 7-8 pair of the low tops over the years and LOVED them. I'm disappointed with the last couple versions of the low tops and now these to the point I'm going to look elsewhere.

Not happy with this purchase. This is the second pair in a row of Salomons that I've had to return. Boot feels like stiff plastic on you're forefoot

Like the look, but very stiff and tough. Definitely need to buy comfortable insoles. Also because of the material, rubs the back of ankle and also top of foot/toes inside the shoe. Wish I could return but throw away the box.

Compared with my previous Salomon walking boots, which I have totally worn out, these ones are VERY unforgiving to my inner ankle bones,i.e. the bits that stick out, due to harder and unpadded design. I now have to attach padding to my ankles before I can wear them as they have become sensitised to the hard edges. Also on my right foot, the "webbed" support over the outside of the foot is much tighter than the left foot, and although can be uncomfortable I get used to it.

I was really excited when these first came out, upgrading from previous gen Salomon boots and shoes. Felt great out of the box and wrapped my (skinny) foot nicely after a very short break in period. The sole of the boot is very soft for a hiking boot as well as the tread which can be good for traction but you can feel the pressure of medium sized rocks. After about 4 months, walking on various surfaces the tread was worn flat on both balls of the foot (and no, I'm not shuffling my feet along the ground like a cross country skier). Because of how well they fit and felt for the first few months, I gave the boots another shot, chalking it up to a manufacturing issue with the early batches. The same thing happened in my second pair. I wore this pair a little longer and it ended up giving me foot issues/pain due to lack of support. Fast forward about a year, I went to a different brand but was missing the fit of the Ultra 4's that I enjoyed, so I crossed my fingers, hoping Salomon figured the durability issue in the soles out. No luck. Another 4ish months and the tread and stability is shot. Again, I loved these boots for the first two months with the fit, how light they were, and the waterproofing was great for me too. They just didn't last. Looking forward to Salomon correcting this in the Ultra 5 Mids

This is my second pair, and while extremely comfortable, the durability is severely lacking. Both pairs have ripped in the same place, right where the natural foot bend occurs behind the toes. Both happened within 200 miles. The waterproofing is also only good for splash protection at best. Great boot for short day hiking but not reliable enough for long distance, long timeframe hiking.

I like everything about these hiking boots, but they are not waterproof. They are more water-resistant than my MOAB 3 hiking boots, which is why I bought them, but they are not waterproof. I bought the Salomon hiking boots on July 6, 2023, I've gone hiking with them five times, and the balls of my feet are always wet when I finish the hike. It fells like the boots are less water-resistant now than the first time I wore them.

I am a handyman, I am on my feet a lot and I need the flexibility of a light shoe. I like the shoe, but it is the only shoe I have EVER worn out in 2 months. The ball of my foot has no more traction and will open up shortly I expect the wear I saw would be very similar to hiking. By that math, about 45-60 hikes would ruin them.

These boots are very stylish and overall comfortable, but the ankle support is very poor (too loose). I don't see them as good for hiking which is what I bought them for. So I am returning them.

I have been looking so forward to buying a pair of Salomon hiking boot that when I finally got to buy them, I think it's created an ankle injury. My review doesn't really justify the boot. It felt great for a flat medium walk. When I went for a second long walk. It gave me a slight anklebone uncomfortable feeling. I've had to stop using the boots and I can't use my old boots now, because I have an ankle bone vein injury, I am sure the boot is fine and it will be amazing but unfortunately all I can say at the moment after two hikes with his boots Is that now I have an ankle bone vein injury please don't judge the boots by my review, I'm sure they are great , I am sure the boot is fine and it will be amazing but unfortunately all I can say at the moment after two hikes with these boots Is that now I have a ankle bone vein injury please don't judge boots by my review you'll have to buy and try for yourself.

The shoe looks great! However it is not comfortable like typical Salomon shoes.. the shoe feels like it lacks cushion and hurts to be in for several hours.

I bought these back in with in the past month. Tried on several times walking inside my house. I find them too narrow across the instep to the point I feel pressure on both sides of my feet while the heal slips. I thought after break in period they would become comfortable. Then I read other reviews and it seems other have same or simular complaints about pressure across the instep. Decided to return rather than take the risk they will not be wearable considering the price.

I'm a big Salomon fan and have owned many pairs of various models. These are the only ones that have been disappointing. The stiff support on the outside of the shoe (that goes up to that funky lace loop) digs into my foot and causes significant discomfort. I've swapped out the insoles for a pair that's thicker and they've become wearable, but I'd never hike in them.
