I have a wide forefoot and always struggle to buy shoes that fit right. Manufacturers sometimes offer wide sizing on certain models, but wide sizing seems to follow one of two different philosophies. Either, 1) wide forefoot area for a wide bone structure at the ball of the foot and normal sizing everywhere else, or 2) "fat" shoes that are just bigger and wider all over, including at the heel. My foot is only wide at the ball and normal everywhere else, so I need the first type of wide sizing. I own the Lone Peak 4.5 and find the fit with Altra's naturally wide toe box design is tolerable for my wide-ball foot, but despite the wide toe box it is still not really any wider at the ball than any other standard size shoe. So, I was thrilled to hear that Altra was releasing the new Lone Peak 5 in a true wide size and ordered a pair as soon as it was released. To my disappointment, I find that the wide sizing used by Altra is of the second type and is just wide and sloppy all over, including at the heel. Not even close to an acceptable fit for my wide-ball foot. I'm much better off with the standard width Lone Peak 4.5 I already own. Aside from that personal sizing disappointment, the feel of the new Lone Peak 5 was very similar to the 4.5, but I felt a bit more "spring" to the upgraded sole that I liked, particularly under the forefoot. Construction seems solid, styling is great, and very likely another category leader. Recommended upgrade, though consider the wide sizing caveats mentioned if applicable to your foot shape.

Bought my first pair of Altras on a recommendation. I loved them at first. Super comfortable and finally a shoe that isn't sloppy when I first put on while also allowing room for my feet to swell. Then, a couple wears after I purchase them I notice a lot of nicks in the rubber sole. It just kept getting worse. I can't do anything strenuous as I'm rehabbing a back injury and I may not even have 50 miles on them and the rubber sole is disintegrating. Some of the tread is nearly flattened and at this rate, I won't get another 50 miles out of them. The worst part was I got an unconcerned 3 line response from their warranty department telling me this is not an issue covered under warranty. If they had decent customer service and acknowledged this was less than satisfactory on the part of quality, I wouldn't have thought twice about this issue. Had they given me any confidence in their product I would have continued to be a new and very happy customer. But they basically told me this was abnormal. I guess Altra just expects you to buy shoes every month. This was totally disappointing as I thought I'd finally found the perfect shoe. They clearly make a poor quality product and don't care if their product lasts. I'm not willing to spend that much on shoes if their ability to last is no better than the odds of a coin toss. (I've also since heard they shrink if you leave them in a hot car)

Shoe was larger in size when compared to my Lone Peak 4 in the same 12.5 size.

I bought the Lone Peak 5 in "Khaki" as light hiker and I also needed something casual to travel in. I never heard of this brand and am a fan of Merrell and Salomon. Well no worries because these shoes are great and look great while wearing shorts or jeans. They are lightweight and let your feet breath in hot weather and on an airplane or while driving (these are not for wet or cold weather). They are similar to the old Merrell ProTerra Sport model and just as comfortable. Altra's "khaki" is more like a sage green color (but certainly not ugly) and I think they look best with no-show or low cut socks and cargo shorts (unlike actual hiking boots). I haven't used them to run serious trails but have used them to hike light trails and through town...and to run 3 miles on a treadmill and they feel fine with decent support. The sole offers moderate grip on dirt and slippery streets (it has a gummy-type sole). I will definitely buy another pair soon and recommend them highly as a shoe to take on your travels.
I'd also recommend:
Merrell

I cannot recommend these shoes for thru-hiking or running. I started wearing Lone Peaks in 2015 on the PCT and happily went through 6 pairs with no foot pain or blisters, and have continued to buy them for hiking ever since. When I decided to hike the CDT, I trained in a pair of 3.5's and these were still solid even after walking in them for 500 miles. I started the trail in Lone Peak 5's, and sadly I really came to regret my choice. The 5's are a disappointment. The cushioning on the back of the shoe started breaking down before I had walked 100 miles. The shoe no longer has the appropriate cushion or stiffness for trail hiking or running. By the time I had walked 250 miles, my feet were a mess of pain and blisters, and I was forced to change shoes. Your mileage may vary, but a word to the wise...

I was so happy to see that the Lone Peak 5 was finally available in a wide version. The new ego foam is a vast improvement from the previous 4 and 4.5's. The extra width feels so good and I suspect that I will get better wear from this version as compared to the 4 and the 4.5's. So far I have 100 miles on this new pair and there are NO SIGNS OF WEAR which I could not say with my previous 6 pair of 4's and 3 pair of 4.5's. Thanks you Altra - my feet are happy.

I fell in love with the Lone Peak 4s but had trouble when I upgraded to the 4.5s. The 4.5s put too much pressure on my Achilles tendon. After the first run, both were pretty badly bruised. I ended up cutting the 4.5s slightly to release pressure. I'm so happy to say that problem is gone with the 5s. They are a dream. I will use for my upcoming 100k this year plus a few backpacking trips.

I have run in lone peak since they came out. For me, this is the worst update they could have made. After 50 miles, there was no cushion left and my feet hurt. I actually put three layers of kinsio tape to the bottom of the inner sole to get some cushion back. Also, the shoe did not seem as wide as the 4.5. I did try the wide size in a 10.5 but it was like wearing a 11.5.

After lots of research and recommendations from a local running shop I chose to drop the $$$ on these shoes. They're not cheap -- and they don't hold up. After < 20 miles the uppers are starting to tear apart. My runs/hikes have been pretty tame - no wild terrain that would do this. Cheap construction at a high cost. Do yourself a favor, buy something $40-60 less and you'll be able to afford the inevitable next pair once those blow out too.

The most impressively comfortable and reliable shoe you will ever wear. I have struggled with comfortable footwear my entire life. Since college I have worn 15W or 16 (if 15W wasn't available), but no shoe has ever felt completely comfortable while allowing proper room for my toes. The Altra Lone Peak shoes are unmatched. Has a way more natural shape of the foot than other shoes, and the toe box creates the most comfortable space possible for your toes. Surpassed all of my expectations.

I wear these rucking 15-20 miles every week and am ordering my second pair after a year so I can start breaking them in. Love them!

These are the best trail shoes. The forefoot width helps traction and encourages you to put down more sole so you don't fall and bust your butt. Waterproofing is great in sloshy conditions. They are cushiony but you still feel the trail. Great on descents to give your feet room.

My Lone Peak 4's blew out after 1 week on Vermont's Long Trail. I was not happy! Altra customer service sent a new pair of LP 5's out immediately. Only problem was that they would not send to a post office on my route. I ended up buying a different pair of shoes to continue the LT. I started using the new LP5's as bike packing shoes this summer. So far they are holding up great! I find the design of these to be a good improvement over the LP4's.

Honestly a wonderful fit and shoe for a wider foot. Very comfortable, lightweight and feels almost just like an extension of your foot. 5 stars

Did a lot of up and downs. mainly on road but also some on trail and switching to zero drop was the right choice. It of course need to be done in steps, but I do believe I am physically better because of it. These LP5 lasted me for a year. I ran 1500km this last year (a bit more than 900 miles) If I'd force myself I could still get out more but it's about time to switch. Starting next month I'll try out the Olympus 5, because why not. Downside with these shoes? I had none besides maybe the design and if you are in the situation of muddy rocks slippage - not quite sure how well other should would be able to cope with that though.. The wide toe box is great. With improper lacing the downhill sometimes gave some slipping - user error. Very satisfied and would buy the LP6 but don't know the Altra lineup enough so going to try the Olympus next. Altra, great job on delivering a shoe that delivers.

Comfortable, as are my two other pairs of Altra which are several years old. Bought new ones on sale before older ones wear out. I cannot comment on the durability of this particular style because I’ve only owned them a short time.

Very comfortable. Fit right straight from the box. Have only worn twice so the question of durability is yet to be determined.

I've owned the 3, 3.5, 4 and now I now own three 5s. I did this not because I think the 5s are the best. I did this because Altra removed the gaiter ring at the base of the laces in the 6s. Now you hook your gaiter clip to the laces. Oddly the gaiter ring remains on the Olympus, but it appears there's no Velcro tab on the Olympus. What's up with that? My favorite Lone Peak was the 4. It's wider in the toes, the heel pull is slightly more substantial, but the 5s have a slightly larger Velcro tab and a tongue pull (which is worthless because it's too small). I strictly buy these shoes because they're designed to attach a gaiter. The toe box is the second reason. Sorry Altra you blew it in regard to the Lone Peak 6 and lost a customer, until you figure out how special the previous versions were, specifically the 4s
