Very snug at the ankle. These boots have been great the few times I've worn them, both in snow and in mud. My feet have been dry, and warm ish. The only downside is that there is no give at the top of the boot and the opening expects that the person wearing the boots has bird legs. It's nearly impossible to get the boots zipped to the top with a standard weight crew sock. There's no way any of my think winter socks would work. The rest of the boot has plenty of room so it's just a bizarre ankle design.

These boots are AMAZING! Took them to Montana for hiking in the Rocky Mountains. These boots are completely waterproof and keep your feet warm for a long time. I was able to climb rocks, forest floors and through water for miles at a time without any traction problems. I also wear them EVERY single day for walking my giant Alaskan malamutes through wet soggy fields, snow and ice in NE Penna., and they perform fantastic! These are the only boot you need. These will be the only boot you will want to wear. They are very comfortable. I have to get another pair for backup!

These are the boots that sit by the door when I need to dash out and have dry warm feet. They are absolutely waterproof and ,though winter in VT has not reached its coldest, my hopes are that they will be warm enough for a long dog walk. They fit loosely around the foot so I wouldn't use these for a walk through difficult terrain. I have other Merrels for that which lace and are waterproof. I have a high instep, arch and wide foot and find them fairly easy to pull on. I am a 7.5-8 and the 8 is just right.

Good boots, comfortable, still a bit slippery on icy terrain. Snug to pull on.

I loved the look of these shoes but they were too right around my ankle so I had to send them back to you. Sorry.

I chose the boots before a winter trip to Portugal where the streets and sidewalks are covered in cobblestone . The rainy season provides ample opportunity to slip so a beefy sole, warm insulation and stylish look were important to me. The weather was warmer than anticipated but I enjoyed wearing them on one cooler day, without any break in issues. Now I've begun wearing them in Northern California where I live and plan to use them over our wet winter. I did spray them with 2 coats of water proof spray before I wore them the first time for added protection against any moisture. Overall I really like the boots although they do have a big look they look coo and fit my size perfectly.

I really like the Thermo Kiruna Mid Zip Waterproof Boot! When looking to bring up the boot description to refresh my memory about its features, it looks as if this boot is no longer advertised on Merril's website. So, originally, I was searching for a boot that would accommodate me on trail hikes in the Spring when the snow has melted, and it is muddy and messy outside. Even though I wasn't looking for an insulated boot, I really appreciate the 200 grams of insulation that keep my feet toasty. Since the boot is waterproof, I can easily wash off any accumulated mud and debris. Also, the lugs are designed to minimize slipping and falling on ice. Additionally, I have plenty of toe room that doesn't put pressure on my bunion. I am happy with this purchase, and I did save some money on my purchase towards the end of the winter season.

I bought these boots because I liked the style and price. I have been pleasantly surprised at the functionality, the ease of taking on and off and they look great with jeans, leggings and snow pants. Visiting my daughter on Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan can be a challenge for any gear but is especially important to keep feet dry and toasty and these boots sure did the trick. There are no motor vehicles allowed on the Island so if your feet get wet, there is no hopping in the car for warmth. These boots measured up to the task, walking through puddles, snow showers, sleet, more snow and more mud. I may buy another pair just to have these perfect all-weather boots on hand. I will definitely recommend these boots for three season wear! Thank you Merrill!

This is my second pair of Merrill's .They are absolutely the best winter boots I've ever had.The first pair lasted for many years and I hope these last as well .A must for anyone who lives in a snowy climate.High quality,absolutely worth the price.

Just got back from an 11 day December trip from Finland and Sweden. These boots were amazing. I walked in snow and on frozen lakes as well as in the city. Comply, Warm and never slipped once. It was 6F when we went into the wilderness to look for Northern Lights, they proved well worth the purchase. Love!!!

Saw these boots last year and really like the style, but didn't have my size. When I saw they were available again this year I ordered them right away. My only regret was I listened to other reviews to size up and wish I didn't. I normally take size 7.5 so I ordered size 8. Anyway I was going to return them for 7.5 but just my luck they were all sold out, so I decided to keep the size 8. I'll just wear a thicker sock. Everything else was great with the boots- like the fit around the ankle, getting my feet into them, the zipper is easy to zip and they feel very comfy to walk in. But best of all they look cute on my feet. I walk ever day and these boots will be terrific for my winter walks and with all Merrell footwear I sure I'll get many years of wear from these great boots.

Cute boots and undoubtedly warm - if you can get them on. I first bought a pair in my correct size (couldn't get them on); I exchanged them for a full size larger (couldn't get these on either). The zipper is at an odd angle. Minimally aesthetically interesting but non-functional. A simple straight up and down zipper would work much better. Although I never got them on either foot, they also seem to be unusually narrow. Serious design issues. Disappointing.

This is my third pair of Merrell winter boots over a decade. The previous ones stopped being waterproof, so sad! The Kiruna is very warm and it has a good traction, I walk down a steep hill often covered in ice, slush or snow, so this is an important feature. The shoe has a bit bulky look to it, especially around my ankles, almost a work-boot look. Functionality is more important than a style and having dry and warm feet is an asset. I will keep looking for more winter boots from Merrell, maybe a slimmer pair will show up again.

Wore the hiking boots to Arches National Park and Sedona. Loved the waterproof boots. Had a lot of pain above my ankles on both sides the first day hiking (light bruising). Gave my legs 3 days off from wearing these boots. The next time I wore it was much better. I guess I needed to break them in more. Easy to take on and off.

Kept my feet nice and warm, but hard to put on due to the height of the upper part of the shoe. A lower sneaker type shoe would be easier to put on. Also I would suggest a half or full size up for better fit.
