Altra has really been messing with what got them famous - the foot shaped toe box. They keep making their shoes narrower and shallow in the toe box. That's what has happened here. too narrow. And compared to other Altras such as the escalante or solstice, this shoe is heavy and clunky.

I really wanted to like these shoes. I liked the anatomically correct foot shape and style. I was looking for a run/walk shoe with a wide natural fit toe box. My usual Brooks Ghost styles seem to get narrower and smaller with each new iteration. Style, color and fit was fine (I did go up 1/2 size as per usual for all my running shoes), but the footbed foam was lumpy throughout and I could feel it through the provided insole insert. Also I could feel the outer rubber bumper up against my little toe with each step. I only tried them on in the home, but thought these issues would not go away during use and ended up returning.

I got these shoes and tried them on immediately. I liked them overall, but there was one things I could not live with. The size of the shoe around the arch of my foot, at the front area where the laces start, was incredibly tight. It was not something that I could loosen by loosening up the shoelaces because it was just in front of the laces where it was so tight. I wouldn't call it the toe box, but rather where the upper is joined together just in front (or right at) the area that the shoe laces start. I wore them around the house for 10-20 minutes, and the front of my foot was starting to feel like the circulation was being cut off. I wouldn't have been opposed to trying to run in them to see if they would loosen up over a few days, but once I did that, I wouldn't have been able to return them. (If you purchase Altra shoes directly from Altra they give you 30 days to try them and still be able to return them, but they don't have the deals on shoes that Zappos has). For reference, I'm 6',1" tall, and 155 lbs., and I wear a size 10 running shoe. So I'm not an overly large man with large feet. But these still were way too tight in the area referenced above. I liked the toe box area. It's not that I felt that was too tight. In fact, I have the Superior 4's for trail running, and I wish they were a little narrower arround the front of the arch area so my feet wouldn't slip around in them so much when running across steep areas. But these were too tight even with the laces loose. I really like Altra shoes. I use the Lone Peak 4 Mid for work. They are a great shoe, and very comfortable. So I'm going to try a different Altra shoe in hopes that it is better than this Viho running shoe.

I've tried other Altra's for my flat feet and these are hands down the best I've tried. Excellent for a short run and perfect for that 10miler. Very comfortable and the box is perfect size. Love that can still feel the street with these.

I am writing this review even though the shoe is discontinued, which makes me sad. The Vihos are great for pounding out training miles. It took about 30 miles to break in my first pair, but after that I was in love. They are very comfortable and very durable. I retired my first pair at 600 miles and probably could have kept going. I bought three more pairs on clearance. I acknowledge the snug fit on top - which I've had with other Altra shoes and have managed through lacing. But for the money this is a great workhorse for me.

I have the gray upper with black sole. I love the color and design of the shoe. I also own the Solstice from around 2018 and the Kayenta from 2019. I've loved all three pairs. From a running standpoint, I like that the sole of the Viho is thicker than the Solstice; also, the "bulge" around the toe for the foot-shaped toe box is less visibly pronounced--I think the Viho looks better. The Viho laces up more comfortably for me than the Kayenta; and again, I like the colorway of the Viho much better.

I really like these shoes. Light and responsive. My son has a couple pairs as well and really likes them too. They're relatively inexpensive and I actually like them better than shoes that cost a lot more. I buy more for function than fashion, but I do think the three colorways for this shoe are all good-looking-- not too flashy, not too boring. The dark slate is a particularly unusual, interesting color. They are not entirely navy blue or dark gray,, but from a distance they kind of give off the appearance of a rich greyish tone of very dark blue.

I use this shoe for work and street walking. They fit perfectly, and feel very comfortable with plenty of sole support on concrete and other hard surfaces.

The Viho was my first Altra running shoe and it doesn't disappoint. Was worried about getting the right size buying solely online, but they fit great and are awesome to run in. Wide toe box is super comfortable. Can't beat the price either.

Had my eyes on these for a while and pulled the trigger when they went on sale...so glad I did! Super comfortable and lightweight and I love the color way (I went with the gray). Another homerun from Altra!

The VIHO is my shoe for lite hiking and around town. I like them also on my concrete woodshop floor for long days of comfort. I used the Escalate for the same use but fine the a little more stable. The Timp & LP I hike in!

Amazing feeling on first pair of Altra shoes. My wife has several pairs and always raves about the comfort and support. I've always had problems with foot width, Achilles and foot pain. It didn't get better after foot surgery. These shoes were game changers in comfort and support all day long. My feet aren't sore at the end of the day. I am now able to resume activity outdoors with my family on bike rides and light hiking. I am looking forward to my other pairs.

For those who are complaining about the toe box being more narrow. That is exactly the reason why I like this shoe more than any other shoe altra makes. I have a narrow foot. while I love altras I do find to toe box on most models to be too wide. The viho is the perfect width. I would like to see them incorporate this slightly more narrow toe box into some trail racing shoes as well.

i've tried several models of Altras and the Viho is my favorite. It feels very stable but not in a stablility shoe kind of way, just sure-footed. They're a firmer ride than many Altra models but not uncomfortably so, not for me anyway. I find them very comfortable. Good traction and fast. Handles cornering and lateral movement just great. They also feel light on my feet, like they're hardly there. I'm surprised to see that the specs have these weighing just a tiny bit more than the Torin 4, because they feel so much lighter and faster than the Torin. I was having some very slight heel slippage in them, even with a runner's lacing, so i purchased a pair of LockLaces and now they hold my foot perfectly with no slipping. They've also been just fine on easier trails and in grass. I have about 60 miles on them and they're showing zero signs of wear. I just enjoy wearing them, they make me want to move and I am planning to pick up a pair in a different color to keep clean for casual wear. Thank you Altra, you done well with this one! Please don't discontinue!

This shoe was my first Altra shoe, and I was always skeptical because of chronic lower achilles tendinitis issues. I searched reviews for this issue and didn't see much, so hopefully this review helps others with similar concern. I get bone spurs and inflammation, and with running and being generally active, I would find myself continuously limping, especially after waking up each morning. I would never walk around the house barefoot. I have custom orthotics and have seen podiatrists and physical therapists. The first week of wearing these shoes (no inserts added), my calves were a bit sore, but they were sore in a way that my physical therapy exercises targeted. After 2 weeks of running about 3 times per week, in addition to 1-2 other strength/core workouts, the soreness was gone and the irritation in my achilles was reduced to a minimum. Working from home in COVID, and I can finally remain barefoot or only wearing socks. I'm not limping and my stride is no longer impacted from my strained achilles. I was told by doctors that I needed a shoe with a high heel, and my orthotics made it higher, so I was reluctant to try these. I am very glad I did. I no longer use my orthotics because while I don't exactly feel like I'm running on a cloud like I do with orthotics and my brooks, my body feels better during and after runs. I'm sold! ...and I will be saving money by not having to buy orthotics. This was a great intro shoe for Altra, and I will be back for more.

So I figured I'd give these a try since I needed to throw a new pair into my rotation. I normally run in Escalante 2's. I've also run in Torins, but didn't like the stack height or weight of those a much. The Viho is a nice in-between as far as weight and arch support go. The rubber sole provided a bit more return as well. The forefoot is more narrow, which I liked. The shoes do take more breaking in than past Altras, but after 20-30 miles they felt great. For the price especially, these are a win.

I'm a big guy, about 225lbs. I have long, narrow feet, but most running shoes I've owned have still been so narrow and pointed at the front that they cause my toes - especially the smaller toes on the outside of each foot - to get turned inward and mashed together. The Altra Viho's in a size 14 fit my feet amazingly well, and feel great. They allow comfortable toe spread, with no loose or sloppy feeling at the mid-foot Zero drop platform with even, durable cushioning that seems to be standing up well to my weight. Like how they look, too.

These are one of the better looking Altra's. I went 1/2 size up and it was a good fit. Slightly narrower footbox than usual for Altra's known wide. But it works, and they look great!

One of the better looking Altra’s ive had. Not as comfortable in as my torin’s. But these a far better looking. Less sole support. Less room under the tongue and toe box. But they are worth keeping. I also went a 1/2 size up. Normally wear size 11, Bur for some reason on these the 11.5 felt better.
