The Speedgoat Mid 2 Gore-Tex does not meet my expectations. The shoe is not as good as the Speedgoat Mid 1 in many respects.
I like the Speedgoat Mid 1 so much--I own 3 pairs/3 different colors. I use them for everything--walks, work, hiking, errands around town, etc. I. wear them all 4 seasons of the year. The Speedgoat Mid 1 is the best boot/shoe I have ever owned. They are the best for every activity and terrain I encounter. I have received a little ribbing about them in regard to the vibrant colors. Not a big deal--I like them so much, I don't mind the colors. In fact, I like the bold styling.
I was pleased to see that Hoka was offering the Speedgoat Mid 2 in a neutral Black/Gray color scheme. It was nice to see the addition of a loop on the heel to help get the shoes on easier. But, that is all I can comment on in regard to improvements in the Mid 2.
Here is what I don't like:
(1) The lining inside the shoe is not smooth and plush like the Mid 1. The fabric is somewhat wrinkly inside, and after a while it feels like my socks are "bunched up" inside the shoe. (The Speedgoat Mid 1 is very smooth, soft and plush feeling)
(2) The tongue on the Mid 2 is very thin and has absolutely no padding.(The Mid 1 is very comfortable in this respect)
(3) The Mid 2 is not easy to get on--even with the addition of the loop on the heel. This is a function of the fabric on the cuff around the heel being somewhat coarse. (The Mid 1 is very smooth--the foot glides over the fabric). The opening for the foot to enter the shoe is smaller, unless you unlace the shoe almost completely. The shoelaces are also larger in diameter and made of coarser fabric and have 0% elasticity. All of these factor into making it a bit of a chore just to get these shoes on.
(4) Finally, the cushioning is not as good in the Mid 2. Support is not as good as the Mid 1. This can be felt in the forefoot.
I can wear the Mid 1 for 12-14 hours--no problem. Fatigue begins to set in after 2-3 hours with the Mid 2.

I was already getting a size larger than usual, but these shoes were STILL too small. The look is more obviously striped in person too. Not suitable for work.

I've had these shoes for about 30 days now. I bought them because I live in Utah and wanted a shoe that I could use as a hybrid road runner/Trail runner hiker. This is the perfect blend of those. Its a light weight shoe but with the gortex and vibram sole, It gives great traction and a bit of water proofing. It's a go anywhere shoe that you can also run in and gives the ankle and foot a great feel while running.

I purchased the Speedgoat Mid Gore-Tex 2 to replace an old pair of Nike Lunar Terra Arktos as my primary outdoors shoe to train/play with my pup. I was extremely excited upon trying them on for the first time and feeling how comfy & cushy they are. So far, in the 21 days I've had them, they've trekked through Minnesota's wet, melty snow. Lots of standing water from the snow, and the grassy terrain of my yard. They've held up to all of these things with ease. Very grippy, very comfortable all throughout the shoe. One thing I wasn't sure about initially was if I'd have any issues due to having very flat feet, but I've had no trouble at all.
I'd easy recommend these to anyone looking for a soft, responsive, springy, and waterproof type of shoe/boot hybrid.

I originally bought a pair that were a half size too small. I exchanged them for a bigger pair and could not be happier. They are my first pair of Hoka's and are amazing - like running on pillows. I use them to run and they are incredibly light. My primary reason for buying the higher shoes were to support my problem ankles and I can run in these safely without the need for additional ankle support braces. I will use them for hiking and everyday wear. Obviously, being waterproof they are a little bit warm, but not uncomfortably. I would highly recommend these shoes for runners looking for ankle support and great cushioning, as well as hikers and every day shoes.
I'd also recommend:
Oboz (for hiking)

I'm a UPS driver and need boots that are durable, lightweight, and waterproof, with great traction. These boots have everything. They even breathe better than any other boots I have. Highly recommended.

I really like the Speedgoat mid shoe. Its tough to find a shoe that is good for hiking that you can also run in. These shoes hit the nail on the head. Excellent comfort, stable, and just the right amount of flexibility. The only improvement that I see that could be done is, I wish they had a lace system like Solomon's do or the BOA lace system. That being said, its not enough to make me not buy these shoes again. I really really like them.

For those of you out there (Like Me) who have not quite found the perfect fit in HOKA but are searching for a comfortable supportive hiker, the Speedgoat mid fits true to size and does not run narrow like most of HOKA shoes.
I fell in love with the fit and comfort of the Rincon 1 and have attempted to venture into several other shoes including the Clifton, Mafate, Hupana and Challenger but none fit just right for me.
I am very aware and sensitive to slight pressure points etc, so it is top of mind when selecting any new shoes regardless of purpose.
I have worn my Speedgoat mid every single day since they came in. I wanted to take them for a spin prior to this review so we are two weeks in.
LOOKS
*Awesome, they are cool, make sense and can wear with shorts or pants without feeling like I am wearing "BOOTS."
* Even though they have a large stack, the pattern and colors do not make these look ridiculous
ALL THE FEELS
*Buttery soft through the forefoot
*Lacing is secure, no bother with laces coming undone
*Perfect ankle height
*The drop is perfect and is as plush as Rincons with a nice forward roll
*Even comfortable un-tied (Slip On)
*True to size
*Not narrow (Like many HOKA)
I could not be more happy with this purchase. The long term test will be the WEAR or DURABILITY of the outsole as next to sizing issues, what I have experienced with HOKA is the premature wear quality lagging. We will see...

This pair is way better than the last pair that you guys came out with due to the fact that it's more protection on the in tire ankle rather than the mid style that I currently have that do not offer the in tire support and the style is awesome

It is a very comfortable shoe. Very plush feel compared to my trail runners Altra Lone Peak 4.5 and Salomon X Ultra Mid hiking boots.
Recently tested them in extreme conditions with the recent snow and ice storm down to 10 degrees. The Vibram tread is very good on these shoes, but still, when there is more ice on the road or trail I would fit a pair of Kahtoola EXOspikes, which work well with these shoes.
Also tested them out with my MSR Lighting Accent Snow Shoes in 8 inches of powder, very comfortable, felt a solid connection with the snow shoes.
Also tried them with Black Diamond Trekking Skis Glidelight 147, this one area they were not a good fit with the pillow cushion of the shoes, they would naturally role the ski to the outside edge.
Looking forward to hikes this summer in them scouring the southern Colorado mountain range.
Now the one thing, that I would change is the lacing system, I prefer the speed lacing that is on the Salmon Ultra boots, quicker to get into and out and lace-up tight. Also, the upper lace eyelets were not punched large enough for laces, barely could get the end of lace though.

I love my SpeedGoat running shoes but they are not stable enough on very technical rocky sections (at least for me with bad knees). The MT help improve stability tremendously and you have the exact same mid sole as the shoe. They make a great winter running shoe on rocky trails.
Hoka I would love a nonGortex breathable version that I can wear in the summer? Please! I am looking for a shoe to do "The Rut" in. This old man needs all the help he can get to run that technical rocky crazy run.
Also some of your resellers call this Hiking Boots. They really should list them under the running section too. They are flexible enough in the uppers to run in them

I had to return my speed goat mids. I have very bad knees and these made them feel awful. I think because of the thousands of little micro adjustments my knee had to do while wearing the soft cushy sole. They did feel like slippers when I had them on, but my lousy knees found no stability.

Was hoping the SPEEDGOAT MID 2 GTX was better than the originals but these leak too. I've been using them for walking the dog in slush and a couple inches of snow, the traction is fantastic, but after about 40 miles both shoes are leaking in the toe area.

I bought my first pair in August 2022 and trail run 3+ miles almost every day in them. Most of my training is in a 25lb plate carrier and the Vibram soles make it light work on my old creaky knees. Only complaint is they lost the waterproofing around 5 months in. Still the best trail boot I've found and I will buy again.

Recently discovered the Hoka brand and my wife and I both bought Hoka Mach5's. However, I spend the vast majority of my time in duty boots or hiking boots. A friend enlightened me to the fact that Hoka also made boots. I couldn't find them anywhere until I went directly to Hoka's website. I ordered both a psi of SpeedGoats and a pair of Kahas. Easily the best boot I've ever worn, and I have extensive history and brand loyalty to Merrill. Until now. Thank you Hoka!

I WISH I HAD KNOWN WITH GORE TEX SHOES YOU HAVE TO SIZE UP 1/2" (NO MENTION OF THIS ON WEBSITE). WHEN I CONTACTED CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR MY OLD ONES (THEY WERE STILL NEW, NEVER WORN). THEY DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW ME.
THE 11'S WERE TOO SMALL.
MY NEW ONES AND THEY'RE GREAT.
