Ok. The color could be better. Much better. It’s neither a grey or proper olive green. It’s not very nice, but since there was weren’t any colorful options, I took this one. But, oh, the fit! I have an issue with sensitive big toe joints and these in the normal width were fine. (Wide not needed.) The shoe body material (leather?) supported the sides of my feet, the laces eye holes didn’t put pressure on the joints, plenty of support and cushion around the arch, heel and toe area. Great! AND....These light hikers are waterproof thanks to Goretex. Why do they make so few trail and hiking shoes for women that are not water resistent or waterproof? We don’t melt in the rain! We go out in rainy days and go places where the grass is wet! They are a bit pricey, but seem well made. To summarize: For my first pair of Hokas, I think they will be great for hiking the trails. I only wish they had a zingy color combination. (Danner had some grat designs and color combinations but they were way too narrow for my foot with hiking socks on. Cinderella’s ugly step sister’s foot syndrome.)
I'd also recommend:

I am an avid hiker - hiking 8-10 miles every week on rougher terrain in the northeast. I am VERY particular about hiking shoes from the size, width, feel and tread from start to finish. I have had Merrill, Keen, Oboz, Salomon, Vasque .... you name it, I think I've tried most. While those brands are decent, my Oboz have the best tread but still cause me more fatigue on longer hikes than I would want. I also need a pair that can sustain a rocky carriage or wood road. If you hike, you'll know that flat trail walking can be rough on the feet and legs at times, worse than up and down trails. With that said, I have been needing a shoe that doesn't put pressure on my feet through all of this. I also would not normally break in a shoe on a long, tiresome hike but this first pair of Hoka's I decided to try them out right away. AND- to my surprise they were absolutely perfect! The tread did very well for me, my feet did not feel any additional fatigue I was so happy about this! They were true to size with enough extra room that I did not need to go a half size higher (which if often recommended) but not for me this time. I used them for the first time on rocky terrain, up and down steep slopes, and some flatter terrain also. What a great test for these shoes and they passed with FLYING COLORS! They are lightweight and I will be anxious to see if they hold up through this year's 500 miles we plan to hike. They should!!!

I bought this shoe for a trip to Africa. It was the rainy season, so I wanted a shoe that would keep my feet dry. This shoe is amazing! At first I felt it wasn't quite wide enough, but after I wore it a bit it felt great: snug but not tight, so my foot felt well supported. I did use my own orthotics in the shoe since I'm recovering (thanks to Hoya One One Clifton 6 and orthotics) from plantar fasciitis. Second day of the trip we went to Victoria Falls which was really running. It's like standing in a shower - you get absolutely soaked. But my feet were perfectly dry thanks to these shoes. We walked, we scrambled up rocky hills and climbed up rocks....I felt like a Mountain Goat! My feet never slipped. My feet stayed *perfectly dry* the whole trip, and I was as nimble as could be. These shoes are just fabulous, and I would recommend them to anyone who is going to be out in less than ideal conditions as they are excellent performers in so many ways!

The moment I put these on, my feet were breathing a sigh of relief. They are so comfortable. I like the Bondi sneaks but wanted to try these because of the Gortex/waterproof feature. They do not disappoint at all. And I love this color. They look very brown but have a grayish and even a greenish tone to them so they are quite versatile with color coordination of clothing. Another good product from this company that helps my high arches and other foot issues like tailor bunions. Thank God for these shoes.

I really want some Hoka shoes but these Challenger style are not the right fit. I have a very narrow heel and mid-foot and I wear orthotics. I want a roomy toe box but a nice snug fit every where else.

Most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I would suggest to new Hoka buyers that you try different styles as the models vary a LOT. Some do not work for me. But HOKA.com and Zappos both allow returns, so order a few styles and try them to make your decision!. THIS Challenger is beyond excellent for me. I bought them just prior to a trip to Costa Rica (remember when we could travel?) where I walked for miles every day on gravel roads and muddy forest trails. This model is waterproof, which was great for afternoon thunderstorms and equally useful back here in Alaska where I walk the beach or forests without worrying about tide or streams. I own hiking boots but these are the ONLY shoes I'm wearing now. I had knee and foot pain that are both lessened in these shoes. Buying another pair and trying the high top version as well.

I walk daily and the sole of this shoe does not hold up on gravel roads. The shoe is comfortable but definitely not made for rough terrain.

These are a wide and I usually wear a double wide, but the toe box is quite roomy and the shoe is very comfortable. I also ordered a wide New Balance but it was too narrow. If the color matters to you, these are a muddy army green and not my first choice but was the only option in my size. I'll be using these shoes for hiking.

I need a wide toe box but narrow heel. Ordered the regular width and I have plenty of wiggle room for my toes which is perfect for me.

I was looking for shoe with a sturdy, inflexible sole at the forefront due to a previous foot injury. These were the sturdiness I was looking for (mostly looking for it not to bend at the ball of my foot) and very roomy in the toe box. I liked the waterproofing provided by the goretex and the style isn't as ugly as some hiking boots can be. The laces also feel like they'd work better than the round type that often come with hiking boots.

This is my 3rd pair of Hokas and I am pleased with every purchase. This pair is wider around the toes. My feet look bigger but not too bad. I wear an 8 1/2. They are very comfortable like my other pairs.

I really wanted to like these enough to keep them, but they were a bit tight on my bunions and the heel was a bit loose. Just wasn't quite right. However, they did have good arch support and were true to size with length.
I'd also recommend:

Really loved the support of this shoe but the heels slipped on my picky fit so back it went. Also I ordered a wide and it was not wide enough for me. It was also lightweight which I liked.

Took these out on the trail last weekend, very sure-footed and comfortable. I needed to insert my orthotic, and the fit was perfect.

Fit right, I size up 1/2 size for hiking/trail so they are roomy and don't pinch by end of hike. Nice padded tongue. Color is dark neutral-gun metal gray/slightly green. Cute polka dot laces that are flat so don't come undone. Have not worn in inclement weather yet but seem very well made. I usually need more arch support, we'll see if I need to put inserts in. I have a hard time fitting shoes, Hokas are great! Zappos returns are so easy that I never worry about poor customer service or having to pay b/c something online didn't fit like ones I tried on in the store or for other reasons.

So I've used many different brands of shoes and have not had one this comfortable until I tried Hoka. I hike an average of 400-500 miles per year - faithfully hike on rough terrain, rock face and all types of conditions. I've been extremely happy with how my feet feel at the end of every hike. My only disappointment is the longevity and wear of this shoe - I've only had these for 6 months and they are wearing out sooner than I think they should. I go by mileage to compare and think a good hiking shoe should last at least 500 miles and I'm only half way there for these. I definitely recommend these for someone who has sensitive feet and hikes on various terrain from hills to flat trails. Not a rigid shoe, just the opposite. This shoe is flexible, has good traction and the side are very supportive through more rocky terrain.

This is the best waterproof, wide, hiking shoe I've ever had and I've been hiking for 55 years! I bought one pair, loved them, then bought 2 more pairs, wore those out, and now they are sold out! I guess I'll need to stock up again once they are available. They are that good! These hikers are super stable, super comfortable, lightweight and waterproof, and the tan/green color is fabulous. The styling is also great as they don't look like athletic shoes, but work as casual shoes. Please bring them back!
