I'm just giving my opinion based on what I've purchased.
Ever heard the expression: You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince? Well, I had to try on many different sizes and styles before I found the perfect fit. I made a lot of online purchases and lots of returns through the Postal Annex. I have funky measurements. I measured my waist with a measuring tape: it measures 36", hips are 41", and 23" around the thickest and upper-most part of my thigh (right where the crotch ends). I have skinny legs-from thigh to ankle. I have a little bit of a muffin-top going on. I had originally ordered a size 34 in the Levi's Wedgie Icon in 2 different colors and a size 34 in the Women's 501 (thinking they were all going to fit because of the size of my waist). They were all too big around the waist, extremely large around the thighs, and a pouch-like appearance at the front of the abdomen. I returned them all. I ordered size 32 in all the above mentioned--still too big. Returned all, again.
MY OPINION: I think you order these like a Dress or Blouse size.
There are tags on the jeans that has 2 sizes: a dress or blouse size and the Levi's size number. Example: size 34 in Levi's jeans is a size 14. A size 12 is size 32 in Levi's jeans. A size 10 = size 30 in Levi's jeans. It's printed as such: 34 Size 14. 32 Size 12. 31 Size 11. 30 Size 10.
These sizes are only for the Levi's 501s, Levi's 501 Skinny Leg and Levi's Wedgie Icon and Levi's Wedgie Skinny Leg. I'm just giving my opinion based on what I've purchased.
Ordered 31 in the Levi's 501 SKINNY Leg (torn-appearance jean), 30 & 31 in Levi's Wedgie SKINNY Leg. HALLELUYAH!! Finally decided to keep all 3. All 3 are skinny leg. The 501s are as I used to know them: sturdy, the original darker colors are very pretty, hugs your body beautifully, and has that durable "hard & thick" jean material I loved to wear in the 1970s. I'm finally a happy camper. Yayyy!! I absolutely love all of them. The Wedgie jeans are kind of thick, look and feel durable, but are still soft--very nice. All three jeans are very comfortable around the waist, around the hips, & throughout my thighs. I kept the size 30 in the Wedgie Skinny because it absolutely hugs my hips & legs beautifully, even though the waist is just a weee-bit tight, bringing out my mini muffin top. On the plus side, makes me look like I have a bit of a "badonkadonk". Because I have SKINNY legs, they don't fit me around the legs like it would anyone who has normal-appearing legs. They fit just perfect around the legs-not too tight (like leggings or exercise wear), but not loose either. If I really think hard about something negative to say, maybe it would be that I would have liked to have a little bit more wiggle room below the knee. If I had thicker (normal-appearing) legs, maybe the Wedgie Icon would've been the "perfect jean" for me. I am who I am and look like what I look like, but, I like me. This is how my Creator has made me to look like at this stage in my life. For the past 10 years, I've had a hard time finding jeans that I don't have to take to a professional tailor to get altered to my body or given away because they don’t fit.
I hope my views will help someone out there. I think I've been as descriptive as I possibly could be.

I'm usually between a 27 & 28 in Levis, ordered both to try, kept the 28. I could button the 27, but they were really tight and I was hoping for some easy, comfortable jeans for this fall. I love these; they are exactly what I was looking for: button fly, high rise, no stretch, perfect crop. The color "jive love" is great, too. Faded, but NOT baby blue. I will be wearing these a lot this fall.

I received these jeans without any (ANY!) tags and they looked worn! Like worn enough to be stretched out from wear. I love Zappos but this is unacceptable and the last time I order clothing. Onto the fit..im a die hard levis fan but the front rise on these for people who don't have long torsos is far far above my belly button and the back rise is half up my back. I have several different fits in Levis 501’s and this is by far the worst in my opinion. Super uncomfortable due to the rise. Even though they have only 1% stretch (in cabo storm) , they stretched out significantly (at least 1 size) after wearing for about 30 min and now look like slouchy boyfriend jeans. Back to 100% rigid denim. I usually don't leave negative reviews but total fail for me.

I love these jeans! They have a classic jean fit and material, unlike most jeans out there nowadays that are all jeggings like.

I have had 501's in the past...depending on the color and fabric I take a 26 or 27. I purchased these in a 27 and they fit well. I don't think a 26 would have worked. Snagged them on sale, so the price was right.

So cute!! The perfect jeans. I almost always buy curvy jeans but these Levi’s surprisingly fit without a waist gap! So surprised! I’m a 7 in hollister jeans for reference

I bought these in Jive Step, size 25 & 26. I'm 5'6 and 118lb. with a long torso. These hit my ankles and can be folded up or worn down. The leg is tapered and cute, but not a skin tight leg, thankfully. These are beautiful, sturdy, medium blue denim with just a hint of stretch, which makes them more comfortable than 100% cotton denim initially. The size 26 fit, but the backside was not as snug as I wanted. The 25 was a much more flattering fit, in my opinion. If you want a more relaxed fit go a size up. I wear size 25 in other non-stretch 501's, so these are similar - just more comfy.

Size up! Thick, non stretch denim. I ordered a 27 (I can sometimes order 26) and the 27 were SO tight!! Could barely get all the buttons. Cute style, not for me :(

These jeans run very small. I wear either a 31 or 32 waist in Levi’s, depending on how they fit. in these, the 32 was at least an inch too small. And the stiff, heavy fabric did not stretch even a little bit. I sent them back, reluctantly, as the style is exactly what I was looking for. SIZE UP in the waist if you order these.

If you like your fingernails or have arthritis, don't buy these. The top button was so hard to undo I almost didn't try them on. When I did , I didn't button the rest. The fabric is very stiff. I used to wear 501s in the 70's and 80's but I think these are way more thick and stiff. The style was unflattering for me. A big no for me. I wish Levi's would bring back the original 501s. They only came in men's sizes but we still wore them.

These are a great “mom” fit jean. They aren’t skinny, but more narrow than the Levi’s wedgie. I’m 125 and usually wear a 26 or 27. Got the 27, a little loose in the waist but love the fit.

True to size. There's only small amount of stretch, but enough. For reference I'm 5'4" athletic build flat stomach and 27 for perfect. No gaps in waist. Love the color and cut off.

Fits true to size but the top button hits right in the belly button. So adjusting a lot for comfort. Love the fabric and look!

These are so fun! They have a bit of stretch to them so don't be afraid to go for the smaller size.

Super comfortable, if you like the more old-fashioned style of jeans. They’re very thick and not as stretchy as the more current styles, which make them less flattering but also give them a vintage look.

30’s ran a bit large especially around tummy and waist, however I’m keeping this pair. At this price I’m going to try the 29’s,

I've been searching for a style of non stretch comfortable jeans. Levi 501's were a part of my growing up. Since then I've moved more to NYDJ and other but I wanted to see if these Levi's were still as awesome as I remember. They are! Love the fit, the look and the feel. Just a note though, I ordered this jean in a different wash and the fit was totally different. Am waiting for this style and color to come back into stock. Great pair of jeans

I have been wanting a pair of cotton jeans for years and I finally have found them! Thought I would never be able to own a pair of 501 jeans and they are back! The color is exactly what I wanted. Now if it would just get cool enough to wear them.

I have nothing negative to say about the Levis 501s. I grew up wearing 501s in the 70s & I think they're absolutely the most wonderful jean ever existed since sliced bread. I love the thickness of the material, because that's how they were back then--thick, sturdy, & durable. I just wish the buttons were a little larger all the way through. The diameter of the very top button seems to be the same size as the old style, but the rest of the buttons are smaller this time around, making it hard to insert the button into the eyelet. I have small hands & short nails & it was difficult for me to button the 2nd and downward buttons. I would imagine it would be extremely difficult for someone who has long nails or large hands. As I've grown older, my gut area has gotten rounder, my thighs & calves have gotten thinner, & the booty area has gotten wider and somewhat flat. I found myself ordering from 34, returning those, then 32, returning those, ordering 31 and decided to keep those. They fit a little tight around the waist, but a little loose around the legs, creating a little pouch around the abdominal area. I'm going to take them to get altered professionally.

I loved these jeans, but the second time I washed them, a strange, faint bleach pattern appeared by the pocket. The third time I washed them, the bleach pattern got worse (see attached pic). I typically wash my jeans on cold, delicate, and hang them to dry, so this was disappointing to say the least. Not sure I'll really wear them anymore.

These were my favorite jeans until I washed them (I typically wash my jeans cold, gentle cycle, and hang to dry). They got a weird, bleached out spot by the pocket. The first wash, it wasn't too noticeable, now they're basically ruined. Not sure why (I don't use bleach, ever), and am pretty disappointed. Is it possible to return/exchange what seem to be defective denim?

I have tried the regular 501 jeans and have never quite found a pair that works for me. I decided to try the Skinny style, but go up a size to get a more relaxed fit. I was wrong. The size up was actually not relaxed, and was quite skinny. Since they are a more rigid denim, they are definitely not comfortable. I'll stick to my current favorite jean brand - Madewell.
