I tried these boots after striking out with the more expensive Rag & Bone combat boot, which was so narrow and stiff that I couldn't even get my foot inside. The Veronica Tall is a beautiful combat style boot (I ordered the black) with the practical convenience of a side-zipper. I usually wear an 8-8.5, but as I did with a pair of Frye flats I own, ordered up to a 9. At first I was worried these wouldn't work for me as I have an athletic calf, and couldn't zip these up my leg (as they were laced out of the box). But I completely unlaced them and adjusted the tension so that they fit my calf circumference comfortably. To give me more length to work with, I didn't tie a bow at the top, but laced them through the last hole at the top and then knotted each end of the lace behind the hole. These sturdy boots are well-made, a timeless style and seem quite comfortable, so I think they are worth the price/investment. I am looking forward to wearing them sightseeing on a pre-Christmas trip to Prague and Krakow I have coming up next week!

I really wanted to love this boot. I own 4 pairs of Frye boots, and I'm always a size 9. With these boots, I could feel that the length of the footbed was correct, but they felt very tight across the top of the toe box, like the top of toe box needed to be constructed slightly higher off the ground. For this reason when I put them on my socks would stretch and pull and the heel of my sock ended up by my ankle such that I could feel the sock pulling at my toes. I couldn't find a way to fix this with no wiggle room in the toe of the boot. I've never had this problem before and my feet aren't particularly big. As one reviewer mentioned, you could either try to break them in or have them professionally stretched in this area. But for $400 boots I want to have them fit right out of the box like my other Fryes. I even ordered a second pair in the same size to see if I just got a weird pair, but I had the same issue again. Maybe a half size bigger would have worked, but they didn't have a 9.5 in stock. The other issue with fit is the calf width. As another reviewer mentioned, the boots feel very tight when you zip them up. Unlacing all the laces and re-lacing helps a lot, but I have barely enough lace at the end to tie it. Would work better for someone with thin calves (my calves are pretty average, maybe leaning towards slightly athletic). The leather was typical Frye's high quality. Would have loved to be able to keep these!

I’m a pretty solid 8.5/39 eu. Frye boots can be all over the place size wise. I have narrow feet, normal arches. These fit me well, perfect length and great in the heel, but were a little tight across the top of my foot- def no room for a cushier insole. Breaking them it would fix that, they’d stretch naturally, or I could have that area stretched just a little at a shoe repair place. I wouldn’t size up because the heel is so perfect, and there’s nothing I hate more that heel rubbing. If you have a wide foot, high arches, or just like a roomier fit in a boot, you may need to size up. It’s so easy to return with Zappos, though, so don’t let the possibility of a few tries stop you, because these are beautiful, timeless and the caramel color is amazing. I am sending this pair back- there is a little extra tan colored sole on one boot in the toe box area that’s visible to me if I’m looking down at my feet. I wouldn’t call it a defect, a lot of people wouldn’t notice, and it’s only visible from the wearers perspective. it’s the kind of thing that happens when you have real people making shoes instead of machines. The slight asymmetry would be all I notice when I look down, though, so back this pair goes.

I love a high lace up and there are few options. Lovely style but the boots are very stiff and the width is quite narrow, even though I sized up a half size. I'm returning them.

Beautiful boot - but calf width was much too wide. Don't recommend if you have thin legs, sadly. Great boot, otherwise!

I couldn't wait to put these boots on! The leather is thick and reminds me of leather used on a saddle rather than my previous Frye boots. For comfort, I adjusted the laces to be snug on the bottom and looser through the leg. If you prefer a loose fitting boot these are not for you. I chose to waterproof mine, which made them a bit darker, overall I am super happy with these boots. .

I literally just received the boots but I had to put them on immediately. They look exactly like I thought they would, the leather smells wonderful and looks beautiful. There are a couple spots on my toes that they feel a little hard at the moment but I feel very secure in knowing that they will be the kind of boots that once I wear them in a couple of times they'll be the most comfortable boots I own. I'm very excited about them.

I absolutely LOVE this boot. I typically wear a 7 or 7.5 but per the size chart it was suggested to order a size up if you're in between sizes. Once the 8 I ordered came, it got perfect! Although I'm not use to wearing a size 8 shoe I still love these nonetheless. Just make sure you order up!

I really wanted to keep these boots. They were absolutely fantastic, beautifully made yet soft and supple but they also run pretty small. Not talking about the calf as that’s adjustable with the laces/zipper. It’s small in the actual footbed. I wear between a 4.5 and 5 but when people say a shoe runs small, I can get away with a 5.5. With this boot, size 5.5 was still way too small and they are out of 6’s. Hopefully they restock soon.

The length is true to size (I'm a standard 8), with almost 1/2" left in front of the toes, but the toe box is extremely narrow. I have narrower feet, and will wear N or AA at times (always in sandals or they'll fall off), but my big toe was in major pain in these shoes (both R & L) as it got pushed toward the inside and the whole area across the toebox felt extremely tight. Wearing them I felt like I was walking only on my first two toes, because so much pressure was placed on them. Feet get wider and toes actually want to splay out. I wonder when shoe designers will finally realize this natural foot shape. If a shoe is soft, then it will give. But this toe box area was so hard like a rock, I knew it would never give. Otherwise, they are beautifully crafted and look classy. And they are also the only lace up rider boots I've seen. With average to smaller calves, and and narrower feet, I need an adjustable boot like this, so this is really unfortunate. I absolutely love them except for this major design flaw in the toebox area. I live in LA and bought these to move back to the NE, so I don't know other boot brands to compare.

Unfortunately, even though these boots have laces, they still don’t fit around my calves - there are wide gaps at either side of the center strip, with laces crossed over the gaps. My calves are generally too wide for pull on tall boots, but not for lace boots, so this was a real disappointment.

Just got the Veronica long combat boots, today. Very satisfied with delivery, given it amid thanksgiving... Boots look good but you gotta have skinny calves to boot -up . It's a lot of money to waste not fitting properly. I decided to keep the boots and just string them loosely. That's the good thing about the string/ lace-up. To make it work I need to get longer shoe laces. A bit disappointed-was hoping the boots were wide enough.

These started cracking about a year after purchase. I have only worn them a handful of times and never gotten them wet. I emailed Frye and they said they do have not a warranty of any kind. I would steer away from this brand entirely.
