I have been an Altra customer for a few years now and have bought many pairs of running shows and have been rather happy with these shoes. I recently purchased a pair of Tushar hiking boots and though the shoe fits well and handled my hiking needs in the Rocky Mountains. However, Altra claims these boots are waterproof. I quickly found out differently when I crossed a vert small creek with no more than a couple inches of water and the boot immediately became saturated. I spent the rest of the day with wet feet. I saw a similar review prior to purchasing these boots and figured it was an anomaly. Well, I found out different. Don't buy these boots if you plan on encountering any wet conditions...like rain, wet vegetation or any pooled water. You will have wet feet like I did.

Perhaps the worst hiking shoe I have ever purchased. About as far away from "waterproof" as a hiking shoe can get. Shame on Zappos for even carrying such a poor product.

These hiking boots were obviously rolled out without any testing. They have a serious design flaw. Both shoes have holes in the upper after approximately 30miles of use. There are places where the tougher rubber type material rubs on the denier canvas creating holes in two places on both shoes.

I really wanted these to work out. It was my first pair of Altra’s. I broke them in on a 10 mile hike and they were great. Wore 1 more time then was lacing up for the 3rd time and the top boot lace holder broke. Good thing I was at home and not on a trail. Sending back to Zappos.

Just did 67 miles of the John Muir Trail and would NEVER been able to do this without these boots. I have totally flat feet and HUGE bunions. 67 miles and NO BLISTERS! Amazingly comfortable! Problem: I've got a rip in the toe box material as others have reported.

Main use is to Ruck/Hike and Trekking as this boot fits "RIGHT" out of the box, Altra signature Zero Drop and foot shape are a plus, if you wear Altra running shoes this boot is for you. Leap years better then Lone Peak as midsole and tread are both responsive and provide energy return. Heal pocket is perfect! I'm a retired Marine with 30 years of service, this product, under load (40ILbs) on steep/unforgiving terrain performed flawlessly from sea level and above 10k'. Boot does not run hot, I've been wearing these boots on the lava at KMC and most recently climbing Moana Loa. Highly recommend!

I love these boots! I am a big Hoka fan but I think these are even better. Was going to order another pair but my size is sold out! Please keep making them.

I never can find a true boot that fits my wide foot. I have lone peak mid neoshells 3.0, which I love. I wear 1.5 Timp, and the mesh 4.0 lone peaks among a few. The Tushar will provide me with cold. wet hiking. They feel solid enough for crampons. If they wear a tiny hole I'll just apply shoe goo or tool dip. Comfort is king so I am very happy. I have to wear Men's 8.5 as women's fit a tad too tight. I hope they keep making a boot for rugged backpacking. Nice combination sole between grippy, durable, protective yet flexible.

I've been hiking in the Lone Peaks but needed ankle stability after twisting my ankles. This is the only boot on the market that has a wide toe box and support. First, let me say the all black look pretty tough. I would like to see a dark brown version as well. The green is hideous. Support on this boot is superb for my ankles (at 240lbs, that's an accomplishment). They are lightweight and I didn't have any of the problems described in the comments with the mid section or tightness. If grommets don't break off, waterproofness is real and they don't wear and tear a hole in that one spot at the bend, these boots will be the best thing since sliced bread.

First and foremost,(as far as I know)Altra footwear Is the only company on the planet earth that manufactures(on a large scale to the general public) zero drop foot shape shoes, $$$~Other than custom-made shoe cobblers~$$$ That being said the shoe is extremely unique a-highbred meta-Morphis.(anatomical~ Ergonomically & oblique, Healthy human foot-shaped platform & zero drop or no elevation in the hill is (((more important))) Then looks. #1The Altra Tushar Boot is Nimble,Does not causes one to restrict the mobility of there foot #2.Altra's Have different degrees of foot shape designs,Timp1.5 To me seems to be the most ergonomically correct, #3. Tushar-2nd-Phase: Increase the Instep depth, Increase the widt(from the toes just passed the ball joint) people like me have not drank the Kool-Aid of pointed toes and elevated heels, Which throws the whole skeletal structure out of balance and decreases agility and traction-because of the overall restricted design of most footwear.(our toes are not!!! supposed to be crunched-up & our heels not supposed to be elevated!!! It seem like this would be common sense. (The premature wear-hole) No doubt is a manufacture defect(possibility of Collaborating engineers and quality control personnel) Are getting paid secretly by competitors to undermine Altra. I am no fool I spent over 25 years in the military. Peace and tranquility to All.

I run and hike in Altras all the time, but I needed something that I could wear on talus and scree that would also be good on long trails. I do search and rescue and we don't get to follow the trail usually, but still have to cover many miles. My Timps are great for hills and dirt trails and cover long distances wonderfully. I have mountaineering boots as well that can take on the climbing and steep snow ascents, but they are miserable to wear for more than 5 miles. I needed something in between. These boots filled that need perfectly. I just did a rescue that involved 10.5 miles of hiking through very rugged terrain that included talus, scree, boulder hopping, scrambling, creek crossings, thousands of feet of elevation change, and carrying a litter for 4 of those miles (with a person in it). These took it all and asked for more. No blisters, no sore spots, no twisted ankles, just happy (though tired) feet.

Huge Altra fan and bought these before Kilamanjaro. Wore non stop through all climates and held up great. You need to layer hiking socks.

This is a boot, not a comfy running sneaker. I've hiked about 20 miles in spring conditions in NY state. I really like this boot. I did feel the seams where the tongue is compressed towards your foot for a day or 2. Good thing about this boot is its lacing system has 2 hooks you can use to really lock your heel into the boot, but its not like you "have" to use that set of eyelets. My first hike in them was a short one, maybe 2.5 miles. I wore thick socks and sock liners. The boots were a little stiff, and they had good traction in the mud. I didn't use the heel locking set of eyelets and I didn't tie them super tight. Next few outings were just walking the dogs on flat terrain. Last weekend I did 6 miles or so with 1 pair of regular Darn Tough socks with the heel locking eyelets tied in and my feet were fine. I didn't get any discomfort from the seams of the tongue. When I got home I sprayed them off with the hose and no water leaked in to my foot I would say if you're willing to put a couple miles on these before you pass judgement on them; you're going to like these boots. These are not sneakers. I love the zero drop heel and the fact that they gave us a small recession on the middle of sole which gaiter straps can set in. These boots have replaced a set of Oboz So far I haven't had an issue with moisture evaporation, but its still early spring in NYS. I'll be interested to see if the e-vent can allow sweat to evaporate. In the summer I may switch to trail runners for longer distance hikes on established trails. That is if the boots don't handle the moisture very well. Anything off trail or rugged, I won't hesitate to give these boots the nod. Run a set of gaiters with these and you'll be good to go.

After a few hikes (and several disc golfing rounds) this boot is breaking in nicely. I have noticed that a lot of the complaints are about the material being too stiff or too much material in the folds; I too had the same initial feelings but after some time in the boot, I feel that it is breaking in and the stiffness is subsiding but still giving me ample support in the ankles. I think that the added stiffness of the canvas material maybe do to the durability of the material and if that is the case, I'm happy to sacrifice the initial softness of the material for that added durability. I also feel that the tighter weave of the canvas material adds to the waterproofness of the boot (at least in comparison to the lone peak rsm). And for those that are stating that it is not as comfortable as the lone peak mid, that is boot is base on a running shoe where as this is altra's offering into a true hiking boot which happens to have all of the great things that altras offer like the wide toe box (which is very roomy and comfortable) and the zero drop platform. It also happens to have AMAZING ankle support for those uneven rocky terrains .. as well as, great waterproofness (I've been ankle deep in water and only noticed the very slightest bit of moisture similar to a waterproof leather hiking boot .. the only thing more waterproof I have experienced is a rubber boot) .. and finally amazing durability (although more time is needed to be a true test .. I've only had them for a month but have had several hikes with it and so for is holding up amazingly). The more time I am spending in this boot, the more I am loving it. Thanks Altra for making a true hiking boot and not one that is just a high top running shoe (not knocking the lone peak here.. it's just a totally different type foot wear thats probably meant for ultra light or up tempo hiking). For those that love altras because of their wide toe box and balanced platform and are looking for a true hiking boot.. this is it!

(Second review :) AAAR analytical after action report #1. Increase 4~foot to more oblique shape/ anatomical ergonomic #2. Increase depth = if I remove the insole it seems to fit more comfortable , wearing a thick wool sock #3. Enstep leasing system can be easily compromised- with people that use jerking motions when leasing " replace with eyelids or same type of link-hardware you have on the rest of the Boot #4. Produce:) the gray granite color or a OD-green of deep forest green color . Peace and tranquility to all

Hiking , Nomadic walking , visiting the 20 something free museums in Washington DC, and my foot commute to work ,#1. Structural integrity of the boot is good #2. Toe space & 4 foot is about the same as the tump 1.5 A good thing #3. Excellent ankle support ; in general :) unsuppressed, unrestricted, dynamic enough to keep the ankle and hill seated properly and allows for unpredictable movements , such as Boulder hopping and scrambling. the forfoot And toe box areas are generous enough for two pair of socks for me that is !! serious~ Appalachian Trail boot " I will be using it to go to the Grand Canyon this summer , and Mount Washington in New Hampshire ,( this is the most comfortable boots I've ever owned. ) because of the human shaped foot bed and zero elevation in the heel, above all other competitors in my opinion. The one possible negative! : ( is the leasing system just above the instep- I think it should be replaced with eyelids or the same type of hardware lysing links, Close to the toolbox . I was somewhat disappointed that the gray one that I seen floating around the Internet was not produced- hopefully it goes in production . In the photograph the Altra Tushar is a 12- 1/2 and lone peak is a 12 . ( I know some people say the wide width looks like a clown , no it's human foot shaped ! . I don't want my feet & toes crunched up- and elevated heels like a scarecrow , peace and Tranquility to all.

Bought them in March of this year. Love hiking in them but quickly learned they aren't even water proof enough for walking through wet grass, much less rain. Less of a complaint but noticeable is that they are not that rugged and the uppers began tearing after some decent but not extreme use. Want to get another pair for the winter but afraid they won't be good for any kind of wet weather, either.

I normally use Lone Peak RSM for hiking, low version for day hikes, high top version for backpacking. I wanted a pair or boots for hiking in cold, snowy conditions, so I bought the Tushar. I am very happy with the fit. Yes, they were stiff when I first put them on, but they are boots, not sneakers. After a few neighborhood walks, and short hikes on trails, they are breaking in quite comfortably. I wear thick hiking socks with them, so the lack of padding in the tongue that others are complaining about is not an issue for me. Having said all that, the true test will be in the winter when I do some hiking in snow, and see how the waterproofing holds up. If it works as advertised, these would be a 5 star shoe. For now, they get 4. They certainly seem like they are going to keep my feet warm in colder conditions. If they perform well in the snow, I will definitely buy another pair before Altra releases the 1.5 version, and changes something for the worse. One thing I think Altra needs to add to their product line is waterproof over the calf gaiters. The regular Altra gaiters will be useless in deeper snow, and it would be nice to have longer waterproof ones with the great hook and velcro attachment that Altra uses.

These boots have a lot going for them. I originally gave these a 5 star. After about 100 miles, a couple of flaws have developed. The e-vent liner is leaking right at the flex points where your foot bends while you walk. The boot's outer fabric at those same flex points are showing the signs that the fabric there will soon fail. There are a couple if images attached to another person's review which shows the same wear-and-tear as my boots are showing after roughly the same amount of use. I like everything else about these boots. They're really close to being an awesome boot, but they're not quite there yet.

I wrote "Beta Version" review above. I have continued to use the boot since then. I don't use the set back lace hooks and that, for me anyway, has eliminated the ankle seam problem. After about 100 miles usage, I have to say these are really quite good. In the spectrum from trail runners to heavy boots these fall in the middle -- beefier than a Lone Peak, lighter than most traditional hiking boots. Has the big toe box I love. I would definitely consider these if you want a boot in this category.

I'm a landscaper and have been using this boot for the last few weeks. Overall, I'm happy with it and have been impressed by the ruggedness and durability. It surprised me to be more stiff and tough than I anticipated. I was expecting something like a beefed-up version of the Lone Peak, and this feels like a real boot. It has a bit a bit uncomfortable in the top of the foot, something about how the tongue material creates a bump against the rest of the shoe, but with some adjustment of the laces and where the tongue sits I've been able to manage. I tend to have hot feet and so when it's not cold these are too hot for me and I switch to my Lone Peak WSMs, if I'm on a jobsite where I can get away with it, or when I'm driving my truck.

For me, it's a little too narrow for its length and I'll have to go a size up, which I don't want to do. But otherwise, finally a tough zero-drop boot that looks as though it won't tear like tissue paper the moment you go off-trail.

The boot is nice. Has good waterproofing. Comfortable upper. Nice ankle stability. My only issue is that it is a bit too narrow. The outer side of my foot keeps pushing against the side of the boot. Wearing heavy winter socks, which is what I prefer in the winter lol, is a little bit uncomfortable. not terrible, but annoying. Another issue, the inner part of the boot curves inward too much at the toe. My big toe is naturally straight our pushed outward, the boot is trying to push it inward. This is uncomfortable. Wish the shoe was generally wider and the inner toe area didn't push the big toe inward unnaturally.

I hike, a lot. I average over 100 miles a month in hiking boots and shoes. Whether is for fitness, backpacking or hunting, I need reliable footwear. What these do right: Toebox - most boots push your forefoot together and these boots have the largest toebox I've had in a pair of boots to date. You're not using these with crampons, that's a whole different type of activity. Securing the Heal - remember folks these are BOOTS, not shoes. Keeping your heal I place is paramount to reduce chafing an ultimately blisters. They fit like a glove. Quite impressed actually. Where they fail: Waterproofness - I've experienced the same as others. These things are not Waterproof. Not a deal-breaker, they just are not. In fact, it would probably be better if they were not. They would dry quicker. Durability - the same design flaw others are reporting happened to me as well. On the inside part of the toebox, where the little piece of fabric is between the toe rubber and lacing system is will generate a hole after a bit of use. The rubber toe piece will rub a hole right through it. Can use some shoe goo to beef it up a little, but it is going to fail. Overall I enjoy these boots, but realize their limitations and set your expectations accordingly. I am looking forward to Version 2 of this. I really hope you all are Altra don't give up on this market. You're very close.
