The support and footbed of this shoe are excellent. It is nice to have a tall, comfortable stack with a zero drop. There are three things that I found to be problems. First, the shoes are longer than others of the same size, by at least a half to a full size, but true to width, so a smaller size may not be an option if your shoes already fit snugly. Second, there is no extra lace hole at the top as found on most running shoes, to permit back-lacing; the result is excess heel slipping. Third, the raised print on the hard details of the inside of the sole saws at your ankle on the occasional graze, to the point of drawing blood; I shaved these off with a scalpel. From a comfort and performance perspective these are among the best Altra has offered. From a design perspective they need a little work.

I ran in New Balance and Brooks in the past. As soon as I put on my first pair of Altra shoes (which was actually a trail shoe - Timp), I new I had found my running shoe brand. Both the Timp and this shoe, Paradigm are the best damn running shoes I've owned. I've put in a lot of miles, sometimes running as much as 80-90 miles a week. I am getting more into Ultra distances these days, which is also a reason I am making this switch. The other running brands (IMO) really are not doing much for the trail runner. This shoe, if you do a lot of trail running, is a great compliment for when you do need your long road run...

Altra has lost its way. After catering to the “wide forefoot” crowd, Altra has made everything more narrow, and now we’re all paying the price for it. I’m now suffering from pain in the ball of my foot as a result of these changes.

Not the most fashionable style, but the comfort, fit & arch support is close to perfect.

I actually like these shoes but my feet are hard to please due a history of plantar fasciitis. They felt good in general but there a part of the construction the inside of the left shoe that was uncomfortable to my foot. I didn't feel it on the right foot.

I've worn Altra's for a few years and have done so because of chronic foot issues, like plantar fasciitis and bunions. The larger toe box has always been the main draw and I got this version specifically for the increase cushioning. Unfortunately, I found the width has narrowed has really narrowed from previous Altra shoes. Additionally, my foot feels slightly numb and tingly seemingly due to shape of the foot bed. I tried loosening the laces but I can't relieve the pressure without making the heel slip. C'est la vie. I thought they looked narrower in the picture and now it's confirmed!

These were to replace another Altra shoe I've had for 2 yrs. They don't make the same shoe so I tried these. The toe box is a bit narrower so it felt tighter. The height of the toe box was not as high so the top of my toe hits the top of the toe box and is uncomfortable for my big toe. The sole of the shoe is taller than the ones I had and it made for an awkward feel when I walked in them. I wish I could remember the style of my current Altra shoes but they're so worn I can longer read the style. The quality of the shoe itself was very good. It just wasn't the shoe for me.

Firstly, I am a female with what I consider “sensitive feet”. Whether my wallet likes it or not, I HAVE to buy good shoes if I don’t want foot pain. I tried about 7 different shoes of various brands before deciding on this one, including Brooks (ouch!)
The comfort of this shoe is totally unmatched in my endeavors to find the right athletic shoe for my foot. I have low arches and a regular width women’s foot I guess. I decided on the men’s version due to the colors available versus in the women’s section for this brand. I wanted a neutral gray color, and this fits the bill. I typically wear a women’s 8 1/2, and found that an 8 in this fits just right. I love that the toe box doesn’t squeeze my toes like most other athletic shoes as well. I’m hoping these get me through many years.
Also thankful for Zappo’s allowing me to return shoes until I finally found the right one (this one).

Thank you Altra for finally providing a max cushioned, solid black colored shoe! I’ve been waiting for this! So, I’ve been in and out of Altras for a few years now, my go to is usually their Olympus and Lone Peak. This was my first pair of Paradigm’s, and I got to say, its been a pleasure working out in them. The Toe-box is perfect, shoe fits very well, zero drop is always super comfy, max cushion is good (little less than Olympus), basically it’s everything you would come to expect from Altra. My only complaint is the shoelaces, they keep coming untied, never been an issue before with my previous Altra’s. Maybe the material is too slick. Anyways, switched to a lock lace, and its been happy trails every since :) I’d highly recommend the Paradigm, especially if you feel Olympus has too much cushion, which I don’t, but some do. Anyways, will definitely be buying again, as long as they keep the solid black color option in their line up! Thanks for reading, hope it helped??

Although the length and width of these shoes was perfect, something about the fit of the heel resulted not only in heel slippage but also in the sock slipping down into the shoe. I've never experienced this with other shoes.

I think Altra has lost it’s way. Second pair I’ve returned. They are now have a smaller toe box and lost it’s cushiony feel.

18 miles straight out of the box and all the little annoying aches gone. Has all the zero drop feel of the Torin 4 with that extra barrier between the feet and the ground. Love this shoe.

I dunno what people are talking about on here. I have super wide feet that usually has problems even with Altras wide toe box but these shoes didn't give me problems. This was my first paradigm experience and I was satisfied. It got the job done. Mainly flat road running. Not my first Altras. Been wearing Altras faithfully since 2015. Good cushioning. Like the Olympus for road to put it simply. Very little to complain about here. Upper was fine. The outsole is fine enough. I got a couple hundred miles on them and they're still alright. I figure I'll get 600 good miles on them then 200 more squeezed miles. I can also run pretty fast in these despite their weight and size. Would use for 10k to marathon plus.

After several years of running in Brooks Ghost and New Balance 860 shoes I tried on the Paradigm and loved the zero drop and roomy toe box. After running in them several times I had to adjust my foot position as I was grazing the inside of my ankle or inside of the shoe sometimes but now my feet are landing straighter than ever and I feel very comfortable with my adjustment.
I like the shoe so well I bought a second pair and alternate them, keeping track of mileage per pair.
I also wear these when I am going to be walking a lot or on my feet for a long time and really love the support and cushioning.
I used to wear insoles (SuperFeet or SofSole) in the Brooks and New Balance, and even bought a new pair of Spenco Total Support Max to use in the Paradigm. After a few runs I decided to just use the stock insole and found that I didn't need the extra support so I now run with the regular Altra insole.
It will be a while before I even try on another brand or style of running shoe. Thanks Altra :-)

First, let me address Altra's customer service ... top notch! I've been wearing this model since Oct. '19 and is part of a 4 shoe rotation. This accounts for about 30 times out with this shoe. The material broke loose from its stitching at the bottom of the heel cup and gathered up to the top collar. I wrote Altra and after a few verifications, they sent me a new pair! These things happen from time to time and they took care of me!
Now, on to the shoe itself. Not sure why some reviews are so negative on the Paradigm 4.5s. I was looking for a soft yet supportive road shoe and think this performs as advertised. It's just soft enough to provide good cushioning and bounce, yet enough rigidity (from the guide rails) to support my medium to low arches. I can really feel the rails help my gait in the latter part of my runs. I also think Altra has firmed up many of their uppers and are definitely not as floppy as in the past couple of years/versions - in many of their models. Breathability is excellent as well. Although I have to agree with some that their toe boxes aren't as aggressively wide as in the past, but still plenty of room for toe splay.
I've run or have in their Torin, Lone Peak and Superior models for at least 10 years now. I think they're back on the right track with their function and color ways/styling in the last couple of years.
I recommend the Paradigm's for reason above!

I had swollen toe issues until I came across this pair and haven't since found another which is better.
Tried Asics, Saucony, Hoka, Brooks and New Balance before Altra. My feet don't fit Nike, Addidas and Mizuno. As one said, it does seem to wear out a bit faster than Asics and Saucony but much better than Hoka.

I love these shoes. The support is firm and I don't need my orthodics when I use them. Cushioning is very nice. The only complaint I have is that the shoelaces are terrible, they won't stay tied. Altra needs to replace these laces.

Altra sent me this shoe to replace my pair of Duo 1.5 shoes. I was a convert from the other big sole shoe brand, and was not sold on Altra until this shoe. I've put about 4 or 500 miles on this shoe before it needed to be replaced. This shoe is amazing for long runs or walks. Thank you to Altra for standing behind their products.

These are my fourth pair of Altra shoes. I've had two pair of Torins and one pair of Provision. Would've purchased another pair of Provisions but they have been out of my size for months. I'm glad they did. These are by far my favorites. I'm 6'2" and 190lbs and these provide a great ride and hold there form. Feel much better made than the Torins.
