Mixed feelings on this shoe. I have owned the Torin 1.5, 2, 2,5, 3, and 3.5. Each pair usually takes me a run or two to fall in love with it. I think my favorites being the 2.5 and 3.5. This shoe felt great out of the box which I was surprised about. After the second run though I noticed it was rubbing the outside part of my foot opposite the arch. There is also some extra fabric where the laces end and the toe box start that reduce the volume of toebox. I noticed the tongue itself folds in on itself on the arch side of the shoe which also reduces the width of the shoe. Nice looking shoe but poorly executed in the details. Would return if I could.

I've been running exclusively in Altra's for a few years now and love the wider toe box and zero drop. I have 7 pairs in my current rotation (Escalante, Escalante Racer, Torin, Superior and Timp), though some are on their way out. I have also tried a bunch of others in store. These have been by far the most disappointing. The biggest issue is the tightness around the forefoot, ironically right where it says "Footshape" where the lacing starts. While the sole and toe box area are wide, they are low volume which makes them feel less wide (maybe good for people with narrower feet) and ends up squeezing my metatarsals together right at the end of the lacing system which makes for a very unpleasant run. This is somewhat of an issue in the Torin 4 but in Torin 4 Plush it is made even worse by the lack of stretch in the upper material. The upper is more of a heavy fabric than the more comfortable knits of the earlier Escalantes and current Escalante Racer (which has structure but is at least breathable). The shrinking of the forefoot volumes (or maybe reduction in the stretch of the upper) of the Altra shoes has been happening over time, but the Torin 4 Plush (regular Torin 4 is still tbd) is the first time forefoot volume has made me return shoes. I would note that while my feet are on the wider end of normal and I have high arches, I'm still in the D range not EE.

Although I always wear a Size 11 running shoe in a number of makes, this shoe too long. Another issue was the terribly long laces. Over 60", which were rather annoying tie and keep out of the way.
I'd also recommend:

I have been wearing the Escalante and decided to give the Torin 4.0 Plush a try, for the extra comfort. While the cushioning is very comfortable, the toe box is not quite as comfortable. It is much more narrow than what I'm used to with the Escalante, therefore I had to go a half size larger with the Torin. Now I feel like my heel slips a bit due to the extra half size I had to go up, but I have the room I want in the toe box. The shoes is still very comfortable so I'll continue to wear them, but I hope that maybe a different lacing technique will allow me to get what I want out of it.

I have been running in the Torin 3.5s for about the last 1,000 miles. I'm a size 15. Just bought a pair of the Torin 4 Plush. I just opened the box and tried them on. The footbox is noticeably narrower than the Torin 3.5s. Not my imagination either. Held them sole to sole with the 3.5s and the footbox is about 3/8 of an inch narrower. 3/8 of an inch is a lot. They are the same length front to back. Haven't run in them so can't say anything else. It's disappointing. The wide footbox is one of the main reasons I started running Altra in the first place. Without that they are just another shoe with nothing special going for them. Zero drop is a slower shoe to begin with but better for the joints. I would order a pair of 16s and see how those are but they don't have any. So my choice is to run in these and get blisters between the toes, again, wait for the size 16 or dump Altra. I know the company just sold and new management is already a problem. "Improving" something that didn't need it.

What happened to the prior glorious toe-box the Torin’s had?!? These are MUCH narrower, and there’s much less width at the end of the toes too. My flipper-shaped feet don’t conform to the new last being used. Sadness. The prior Torin versions were blissfully comfortable.

I should have listened to to other reviewers who described these shoes as too narrow with insufficient vertical volume at the mid/forefoot. Not what I have come to expect from Altra where their signature roomy toe-box is, alas, insufficient.

I violated my own rule of buying things online. The shoe length is spot on. The width around the ball of the foot is too tight. The shoe fits fine if you remove the insoles. Other reviews said the shoe was narrow around the forefoot. I have a pair of TIMP 1.5 and they fit like clown shoes. So I assumed incorrectly that if they were tighter it would be no big deal. But it is. I will be shipping them back the day after have been delivered.

Torin 4 lost cushion as Altra migrated from 3.5 to 4. I tried the Altra 4 plush hoping to get a bit more cushion than the standard Torin 4 provides in order to ease the pressure on my Morton's Neuroma. While the extra cushion was nice the shoe did not fit the same at all. My heel kept lifting out of the shoe no matter how I tried to cinch it down with the shoe string. My no-show socks were pulled down to the base of the shoe while just walking around the house. I went back to the standard Torin 4, that while not as good as the 3.5, is better than anything else that I have found on the market.

Took off my Superior 4's and tried to put on the Torin... could barely get my foot into it. Constricted across the whole ball/wide part of my foot, and a narrow toe box to boot. Really disappointed. I didn't expect them to fit like the Superior, but I did expect them to fit, since I thought the wider toe box was an Altra feature. I was wrong.

These are way too tight at top of foot. Very strange since they look wide but they are unwearable.

I love Altra and the Torin shoe. The previous models were the most comfortable running shoes I have ever owned. They always fit right out of the box. The wide toe box was the best! The Torin 4 however changed the shoe I love into one I wouldn't purchase again. It is a lot narrower than the previous models. I didn't believe it at first but held them up to my Torin 3.5's and you can noticeably see how much narrower the Torin 4's are. I really hope that Altra makes the next Torin model toe box wider like it's predecessors!!!

Absolutely nothing like the predecesor. The plush material is half the quality of the knit material. There is far less plush material then there was knit material on the 3.5. Narrow toe box is the un-signature of what Altras are supposed to be.

Why have 28 or 29 m/m of cushion if your Going to scoop it out to make the shoe more flexible And lighter?. The escolante 1.5 feels better On my metatarsals than the Torin plush!

I love my Torin 4 and hence decided to give the Plush model a try - what a disaster! I should have listened to other reviewers who complained about the fit... The hard plastic inserts are horrible. Returning.

length is fine ,but like others said the forefoot is brutal , without even lacing them up they are clamping down on the forefoot area right around the bottom lace. The toe box itself has room for the tips of your toes to spread out laterally but just way too much pressure pressing down from the top of the shoe. I am returning them right away and will wait to see if they fix this in the next version.

I have the Torin 3.0 and love them. My most comfortable shoe I've ever owned. I was excited about picking up the Torin 4 Plush, but upon opening the box I noticed the toe box was significantly smaller. Upon trying the shoes on I confirmed my suspicions. Sad to say that they've gone backwards on the heritage of the brand. Not sure why because that's what I was drawn to in the first place. Please either start making wide versions are switch back to the old last.

I am an Altar fan and have run in Lone Peaks as my trail shoes for years. I have always used the Torin as my road shoe and had been running in the regular Torin 4. I decided to try the Torin 4 Plush and was disappointed. It felt really good our of the box but after a few runs I started to get pain in the outside of my lower leg. I pronate very slightly and one of the reasons I liked Altra shoes was that they controlled my slight pronation. I then had someone watch me run and at foot strike my feet were rolling in because the EVA was simple too soft!!

Feels true to size and width (size 11) but the volume in the mid foot where the laces start (just behind the toes) is too shallow making the shoe too tight to wear. Never had that problem before as I don't have a wide nor a or thick foot. That said, don't see how anyone can wear these unless the problem goes away in other sizes. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb!

I've had 6 Altras now and this is my first venture outside the Escalante/Racer lines. I can safely say that these are the WORST and most uncomfortable shoes I have worn... ever! It's so narrow that I could not run longer than 3k before having to quit from all the pain. I have a high tolerance for pain, but the vise-like grup on my metatarsals combined with the idea that I paid so much for a bad shoe was unbearable. I feel so cheated having bought a product like this, blindly trusting in their name and reputation for "wide" shoes. They are heavy and stiff, forcing the foot into a straightened postition and making forefoot strikes that much more difficult. The upper is stiff and unlike the sock-like feel of Escalantes. I should have read the reviews earlier. I went out to but the Torin 1.5 at a local store and can confirm that the predecessors are more comfortable and wider than these Torins. Pity the next guy to get these in the Salvation Army bin. These shoes are simply not worth the weight, money, and absoulutely unworthy to be called Altras.

I have been buying Torin 3.5 and I love them. The Torin 4.0 is too narrow for me. Please bring back the Torin 3.5.

Love Altras, but this model is a swing and a miss. Length is perfect, Width is way too narrow; shoe is unwearable. How can the upper be that tight? I had Torin 3s and they were kinda tight but still comfortable, and version 2.5 were one of my favorite road shoes ever. Why can't the Torins be made to fit like Lone Peaks. Love those.

The Torin 4 Plush was my favorite running shoe a few months ago when I got my first pair. Sufficient padding while still remaining precise, and a great toe box and forefoot. To lock in the great fit for longer, I decided to buy another pair. Sadly, Altra appears to have changed the shoe design. Every new pair I've tried (from multiple different retailers) has had a painfully tight forefoot. This does not match the fit of the earlier Torin 4 Plush nor other Altra shoes (such as the Lone Peaks). Sizing up does not help the problem (and gives too much horizontal space in the toes anyway). I hope Altra goes back to the old fit with the next iteration because this has the potential to be the best padded road shoe out there.

I'm a wide-footed, die-hard Altra fan - for running, hiking and casual wear. The toe box in this pair of shoes is visibly much narrower than the previous model and fits tighter than most non-Altra brands. It was so tight that my metatarsals went numb just trying them on and walking around the house for a couple minutes. This will be the first pair of Altras that I return. I sincerely hope this is a manufacturing mistake and not a trend in the fit of Altras. Believe the reviews - if you truly have wide feet and buy Altras for the wide toe box, DO NOT buy these shoes!

The store where I normally buy my Altra's was out of my size in the style that I normally get so I got the Torin plush. The fabic on the top rubs my foot in an irritating way and the zero drop in this particular shoe feels like a negative drop. I'm a very nuetral stance walker/runner yet my heal is sinking in a pronating way. It's so bad, I am going to have to buy a new pair of sneakers and it hasn't even been 30 days! I teach PE and coach cross country so I need a great pair of sneakers. These don't cut it.
