I recently tried a number of pairs of hiking boots. Note, I’m not a serious hiker, but have been doing moderate hikes each weekend recently. Keen targhee III mid WP: These were my keepers. Very comfortable, sturdy, light. Wore them on a 4 hour moderate hike yesterday and was happy with them. Oboz Bridger BDRY: Comfortable, sturdy the heel is a bit weird but I would’ve gotten used to it in the end the back of the shoe seem like it might be too tight and would eventually rub too much against the back of my ankle. Solomon mid gtx: Comfortable, sturdy. I’m an in between size and ordered the lower size. There was a bit of tightness at the top of the foot that would probably been gone with a half size larger. Merrell Moab 2 Prime Mid Waterproof: These I ordered in the higher size and also in a wide. They were just too big. But they might have been the most comfortable. The Keens worked out for me otherwise I would have given these a try in a better size. Solomon low ultra 3 wide gtx: Comfortable but I realized I ultimately wanted a mid rise. The pull laces seemed iffy but the reviews don’t seem to indicate a problem. Solomon low X Raise Gtx: Felt a little snug putting them on, but once on they felt comfortable. I realized I ultimately wanted a mid rise. Again, the pull laces seemed iffy but the reviews don’t seem to indicate a problem.
I'd also recommend:
Merrell MOAB

I am a big fan of the Targhee II, so I thought this new model would be great...I found these shoes to be far less comfortable. They are more rigid because the soft leather of the Targhee II has been replaced with rigid plastic. It doesn't mold to your foot and I can feel the lugs on the bottom with every step. They don't hurt my feet, but don't feel good either. For $150 I want shoes that feel good. I'm going back to the Targhee II. Also, this new model runs a half size bigger than the older model.

Shoes are comfortable. Bought to wear at work(remodeling). Okay for that use, but I went hiking on trails with some roots/rocks and I could feel everything through my soles. Plus because they are wider than normal in the front, my feet were sliding around on the slopes. Would not recommend for hiking. At $150, they are a little expensive for work shoes, but I thought I'd give them a try. Not again

Great boots for daily wear. I work on a large campus and it’s great to keep my feet dry between buildings and looks good with business casual.

These shoes were great until the arch support started to break in. I realized today that I didn't have something new wrong with my foot, but that the right-side shoe had a manufacturing defect. There was a slight manufacturing defect that pushed the arch in the shoe's sole out of alignment. It was quite subtle when I first got the shoe, but as I started to break it in, it became more pronounced. It basically makes wearing the right shoe unbearable for more than 30 minutes now that the insole and the rest of the shoe has started to break in. I attempted to take a photo of the right (first, see the slight uplift on the very right-hand edge, where there is blue dye) and left shoe (perfectly smooth, the left-side shoe was very comfortable). I am going to try getting a new left-side shoe and will update this review afterwards if I can with a review for one without the defect.

Was replacing my Targhee II's but the quality of these Targhee III's does not compare with the Targhee II's. So am returning them. Thanks to Zappos for being a great company.

I first sized up like everyone said. I tried the 14, it was too big. I then tried the 13, it was too small. I guess Keens are not the shoe for me? Back to Merrills I go!

Fit and size were true. Didn’t last very long. Gave as a Christmas gift and they are already worn out. They haven’t even been worn since mid March when shelter in place started. When you pay this much for shoes, you should get more than 3 months out of them.

I have had my old pair of Durand 2 waterproof boots for something like four or five years and have been happily hiking in them all over the US. The bottoms have finally worn down to nothing and I needed to replace them. I went to my local outfitter and purchased a brand new Keen hiking boot, which is listed on their website as a best seller, and was excited about everything including fit and looks. It turns out I purchased the Targhee 3 waterproof mid. Happy walking around normally with them at the store, but on my very first actual hike I managed to kick a rock (an extremely common occurrence) and experienced an amazingly sharp pain in my toe. Upon inspection, I discovered that there is absolutely no toe protection in the new boot. This is something I could barely understand, as these were hiking boots that cost nearly $200. To leave out such a vital feature was just unthinkable. I made my way back to the car, having no desire to continue the hike, and inspected the boot. I found that I could easily push my finger into the toe of the boot, as if it were a slipper. I had purchased a pair of trail running shoes on the same day and had them with me, and found that even the lightweight shoe had a much more rigid and protective toe box. To add to that, the boot now has an indent on the inner liner that constantly rubs my toe in the spot it was kicked, and won't stay popped back out. Both the retailer and Keen directly will do nothing about this in terms of return or exchange, which makes me sad as someone who's worked in retail and customer service for over a decade. I will unfortunately not be purchasing another pair of Keen boots, as they seem to have greatly declined in quality and credibility since I last purchased their products.

Soles of both boots came apart over 5 hikes that were completed less than 1 month after purchase of the boots. Clearly a defective design. I own other Keens that have performed well but cannot recommend this model. I replaced with a different brand.

My son loves these shoes. This is his fourth pair in the last four years or so. They hold up well and waterproof is a must.

Keen mid boots are my go to for all around practical uses. These are great for hiking or basic stuff like yard work etc. They are my troopers and last for years before I need a new pair. I think keen boots typically run a touch wide and fit feet like mine which are a bit wide really well.

A number of my friends wear Keen's and I've been thinking about getting a pair myself. I needed a pair of boots so I thought I would give them a try. I used the sizing feature on Zappos to help me figure out what size to get. You input a style and size of a pair of shoes you own that fits good and Zappos will tell you what size to get in another brand. This worked out great! I like how light weight the shoes are and that the toe box is wide so my toes are scrunched together. The shoes appear to be well made, but time will tell how well they last. I'm usually pretty hard on shoes. I am not a fan of the laces. I think they will come loose rather often since they are made of a slick material. I will probably have to double knot them to keep them tied. The shoes do feel comfortable and appear to have a modest amount of support. I wore them for several hours the other day and my feet did not hurt nor did they get tired. Over time that may change, which is normal. Overall I am happy with my purchase.

Keen used to be a high-quality shoemaker, but their quality control has gone dramatically downhill over the last several years. For shoes that cost over $150, I expected better than this. The outside edge of the left shoe showed obvious gapping in its trim area, where none existed on the right shoe. I observed similar defects on some of the Keen’s I bought in this order. Also, the forefoot area is a good 1/4” narrower than previous versions of this model. That may not seem like much, but after walking around on concrete floors for 10 hours a day, as your feet swell, even slightly, you may find that it matters quite a bit. I rated them as “narrower” in width, for that reason. I also found this same narrowing of the forefoot area on all six pairs of the various Keen’s I ordered, so if you want a nice, roomy toe box, I suggest you look elsewhere.

The boot fit and felt great on my right foot. Every time I'd step on my left foot my ankle would roll inward. I could feel something pushing on the outside of my left foot making it roll.

These "waterproof" shoes were soaked inside just walking through some moderately high (4-5) wet grass. It wasn't even raining. Second pair of these that have had construction quality issues. It's a shame because these shoes are perfect to wear out of the box, absolutely no break in needed.
