Super durable technical shoe. Absolutely amazing for the scramble up rocks. Super sticky sole. When the trail gets super technical I have all the confidence dancing in the shoes. Great Kush and plenty of protection under forefoot.

If you already have the xa alpine 2 and want a lighter , more breathable ,low top version, this is the shoe to get. I have 100 miles on these and they still look new. I mainly run over granite and these shoes are grippy and precise. No other shoe (except the xa alpine 2) delivers the same confidence inspiring feel on easy climbing and scrambling with the comfort to run in one shoe. I have worn out two pairs of the xa alpine 2 and I am psyched to have another shoe with the same sole and similar chassis. Good job Salomon!

Personally I think these shoes are better than their S/Lab shoes I've ran in. Because I wanted to do a lot of ridge running that had a lot of technical scrambling the 'climbing zone' seemed to offer what I was looking for; a shoe that will do great running and climbing. However the 'climbing zone' didn't offer the climbing comfort I thought it would. I was hoping it would offer something similar to what the TX does from La Sportiva. Also, my climbing could be totally different than what Salomon's idea was when they developed the shoe too- So if you are looking to get a shoe that you want to do anything above class 3 climbing I'd suggest looking for a different shoe.
I do however think this shoe will work for my trail runs, so I'll be buying the again!

I recieved these for a birthday, and boy oh boy these are nice, supreme comfort an work amazing in the snow, mud wipes off super easily, but not as waterproof as my old pair of salomons, (which are still in like new conditions despite climbing several mountains with) Overall, if I lost these (Despite the colour) I would buy a new pair, but waterproofing is pretty important to me because I live in England, also great for Mountain biking and the quick lacing system is amazing

I've used these on a number of big mountain runs in the Adirondacks, and love them. A little narrow in the forefoot, but otherwise a great shoe, even when pushing 16 miles of mixed terrain, rock, ridge, and soft forest.

I picked a pair of these up for the Roper Sierra High Route. I was looking for a shoe that would be 80% trail runner and 20% approach shoe. The "climbing zone" was particularly appealing, since I knew I'd be doing a lot of class 3 scrambling and having a solid edge would be helpful. This category is basically a niche within a niche, and I was stoked that it seemed like the X Alpine Pro was purpose built for this application.
These proved to fit the bill perfectly! The fit is excellent, and the stability, especially when climbing, is exceptional. They're definitely not as cushy as my Cascadias, but the shorter stack height provided much better stability, and I found I rolled my ankles much less frequently than I do in the Brooks. I was a little worried about the absence of a rock plate given the ruggedness of the terrain, but it proved to be a non-issue. The density of the foam plus the thickness of the outsole performed much the same function as a rock plate, and I never had issues with sharp rocks poking my feet through the sole.
The slightly wider footbox was also great. I wouldn't call it wide by any means, but it is wider than some, and I found it quite comfortable. My only comfort issue was that the lack of padding in the tongue meant I could feel the laces on the top of my foot. When I took the shoes off, especially after I had tightened them for a particularly technical section of the route, I could see the red criss-crossed imprint of the laces in my foot.
The TPU protection around the rest of the shoe worked very well, and rocks that I kicked up bounced off my insole and cowered in fear at my invincible feet. The tradeoff here is that they're less breathable than other trail runners, as the protective TPU is waterproof, so my feet got a bit sweatier than in other shoes, but in my opinion it's a worthwhile tradeoff and the designers made the right choice. The mesh was very tightly woven, which kept dust out much better than more open mesh I've seen used in other trail runners. Again, this comes at the expense of some breathability, but it's evident that it was a conscious decision on the part of the designers, and I think it's another worthwhile tradeoff.
The one quibble I had with these was their durability, which is why I gave them 4 out of 5. The overall longevity of the shoe was fine, with the uppers and outsole making it about 400 miles, which, considering the brutality of High Route terrain, is as much as can be reasonably expected.
However, in my opinion, there were two unforced errors in the durability of the shoe, both having to do with the lacing system. First, the cord lock used to secure the laces on my left shoe stopped working consistently during the second use of the shoe. It didn't lock properly, meaning I had to stop often to re-tighten the shoe, especially annoying since I was wearing trail gaiters. Some days it worked great, but other days it just would not lock. Seems like maybe there's a spring in there that's responsible for holding it closed that broke or something. Other people don't seem to have had this issue, so I'm guessing I just got a lemon and that it's not a widespread problem.
The second issue was the eyelets that the laces pass through. They're not metal, or even reinforced. They're relatively thin nylon webbing that abraded very easily when the laces were tightened. The laces also don't slide through the webbing loops very smoothly, making tightening a bit of a chore. I broke one webbing loop on each shoe after a few weeks of use, and all the other loops are frayed significantly and holding on by a literal thread. When the durability of the rest of the shoe was so good, this seems like an oversight, as it's an obvious weak point that failed well before the rest of the shoe wore out. Fortunately they were still functional even with the broken eyelet, and it actually alleviated some of the top-of-the-foot discomfort I referenced earlier.
All in all, I love these shoes. Obviously, shoe design is a bunch of compromises between durability, comfort, breathability, etc. You can't have it all, but the decisions the Salomon team made were thoughtful and obviously tailored towards fitting a very specific niche, and I thought they nailed it. They're definitely going to be my new go-to for anything off-trail, scrambly, or semi-technical. I found myself feeling totally comfortable and stable using my toes and edges on narrow footholds that I never would have even considered using had I been wearing any other trail runners. The comfort over long days (I averaged 10-14 hour days on the SHR) was excellent, and they weren't stiff and heavy like approach shoes. I think I'll stick with my Cascadias for smooth trails because of the breathability and cushion, but for any route where I have to think about where I put my feet, I'll be using the X/ Alpine Pro without hesitation.

I bought this shoe to take my running hobby to the trail. I love the fit of the shoe. It did slip more than I expected in the mud on a steep uphill, but that could be normal as I have nothing else to compare it to. It also seems very expensive for a sneaker.
