I normally wear a 10.5 in shoes for running, but these run about a half-size longer than most and the 10 was the right length. My foot is a little wide and while my usual running shoes are medium width (Newtons and Brooks) I find the medium in some brands run a little narrow for me (Saucony), especially for any distance more than 5K. The Altra Superior 4.0 shoes runs a little narrow through the midfoot. The length was perfect, but my foot overlapped the foot bed. I ended up ordering an 8.5 in the men's version of this shoe and, while it runs slightly longer and the blue isn't nearly as nice as the women's dark blue, the wider width was perfect and made these shoes feel like the other Altra's I own (Escalante). Haven't had a chance to do any gravel/trail running on these yet (it's just too muddy and rainy for me to take out new shoes, even trail shoes!) but they feel great and I think they'll be wonderful on the non-technical dirt/gravel roads and single-track trails I like to run.

I love these. I've worn previous iterations of the Superior, and these are better. They're lighter, the sole is more flexible, and the last makes better sense. I wore a size 9 in the old versions, which ran super small. In these, I take an 8. The fit is just spot-on, and manages to look sleek too. The laces are about two feet too long for some reason. Whatever. I like these very much, and am so happy that Altra is thriving. Altra Superior and Escalante Racer are just about the only shoes I wear. Never going back to shoes that don't respect my foot shape.

I've been buying Altra for over a year because many of their shoes have removable insoles for orthotics. What's most wonderful is the great toe room! No "wide" needed. If you need removable insoles for orthotics, be sure to check the specifications because some Altra's do not have removable insoles. Also, some have a shorter foot base than others so you may want to take that into consideration if you're going to be replacing the insole with orthotics.

Way too short- the shoe is (I found a piece of paper in one of the two boxes of shoes I ordered) a 11.5-12.0 size. WAY too short for my size 12 foot for which I ordered a size 12. This can be misleading and I would NOT have ordered this. The toe box is big but my big toe was RIGHT at the end and hit with just standing. Cute shoes. Not alot of cushioning. I ordered for the wide toe box BUT...

Super disappointed Altra no longer makes my favorite trail running shoe, the Superior 3.5. I know shoe companies are constantly changing to make their shoes better but when you love a certain style it's a bummer when it gets changed. This shoe fits in a really weird way with the laces further back on the arch so a big toe box that is roomy as Altra aspires to be, but too much fabric with the laces so far back. Not happy with any of Altra's trail shoes right now, hopefully, the next round of changes will be better.

I love Altra shoes. You can see your toes on the top slightly because the material is lightweight. They are nice shoes, but I think I'll pick a different style Altra! They are great with orthotics and the toe room is excellent!!!!!

These are VERY bendable for a hiking shoe. It has a very minimal foot bed. Not for me.

Love these shoes! My feet measure women’s 11 but I usually wear a 11.5 or 12 in athletic shoes. A 12 in these fits perfectly so I’m guessing they run about a half size small. Chaco sandals size 11 also fit my foot perfectly just for reference. These shoes are super comfy and springy. They propel you forward and feel great on. Cushion is really good for every day to asking and regular hikes, however I’d opt for the Torin model if you are looking for distance runners. With that said, I’m also a bigger girl-5’8 and around 210 lbs so if you’re smaller, you may think the cushion is ok for running. These have no arch support but the deep upper design allows me to use my superfeet inserts with no issues. This combo in perfection. I also tend to under-pronate (walk on outsides of feet) and these actually correct that issue, as the shoe in balanced to lean slightly inward. If you over-pronate these may not be for you.

Cute and comfortable shoe. My foot feels like it can bend and grip the trails/rocks for hiking. I use them for running on gravel and they are good for that. Also run on asphalt, but feel I need a little more shoe under me for that. I use the Altra Escalante 2 to run on both surfaces and that works great. I will keep the Superior 4 for trail though because it is really comfortable and works good for that. Only complaint is the shoestrings are WAY too long!! I double tie them and still feel the shoestrings hitting into my legs. Please include normal length laces for people that don't want to trip over these things. Wear size 8 in other brands and needed a 7.5 in both Altra styles.

I feel like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. These shoes aren't too wide, not too long, not too short---just right. I've been wearing the Altra TIMP in a size 9, but decided to try these because they came in---gasp!---BLACK! (Get the hint, you manufacturers? We need subtle colors as much as the bright neon shades!!). The TIMP has plenty of toe room and felt soo much better than what I had before---Brooks---but the Superior fits even better. It's just a tad narrower in the toe box and actually supports my foot better. Did I mention it comes in black? Hurrah!

These shoes are so amazing! So comfortable right out of the box! I've tried every kind of trail running shoe on and this one is the best overall! I highly recommend!

I am so crazy about Altras for my wide feet, that I will never go back. The special attention to the toe box puts them in a class of their own. My superiors have been through the mountains, beaches, forests and messy wet trails. I confess to wearing them barefoot and love the ventilation and air flow. I was surprised to see people say these weren't good on rock slabs! I find them to be pretty "sticky" and I like the flatter sole, rather than bumpy tread - bumpier tread makes me feel a lack of contact to the surface area on the rocks. I feel confident on wet rocks (unless there's slippery green moss or slime!). I am grateful for the designers of these shoes because everyday I wear them on my adventures and they play a huge role in my enjoyment of nature! MOST COMFORTABLE SHOES EVER.

I've been running in them for a few months now, typically logging 3-5 runs/week, 6-10 miles/run. I really love the materials in this shoe- it fits my foot more securely than any other Altra (I've been team altra since the first escalantes, when they were still great ) while still providing wide toe box and a bouncy but thin, responsive sole. My only discovery is they are not great for flats or road running because there just isn't enough cushion- still top notch for trails! Love the grippy sole too!

This is the first time I have bought this brand. I usually buy Brooks running shoes, but they've started making the toe boxes more narrow and I no longer can wear them. After a lot of research, I picked Altra and am pleased with the purchase. I have power walked in them everyday for a week. Haven't run in them yet. The fit is good. I like the stretchy material across the top of the shoe--minimizes pain in my hammer toe. I do wish the platform of the shoe under the toe box was wider, as my very wide foot hangs over the edges.

Very comfortable! Good for long standing. Light weight, with lots of toe wiggling room. I guess your original size will definitely fit. I wear a size 8 usually. I ordered a size 8 1/2 and they are really big but still comfortable so I'm using this for work. This shoes is way more comforting than the Dansko as an operating room nurse I would definitely recommend these.

Just put 400+ miles on a pair and decided to replace them with 2 new pairs!! Ran 2x 50m and a 100m in this pair with ZERO blisters. No joke. I've run in Torin, Olympus, One & Lone Peak. I'm not an Altra junkie - I also run in Saucony & Hokas - but these are by far my FAVORITE SHOE. They are so much lighter than the 3.5 model - the 4.0 is AMAZING.

I saw a lot of people saying how bad they were on wet surfaces but I have yet to really experience that. I ran down a snow/ice muddy hill for like 6 minutes straight (bad for my shins i know) and really didn't have any problem. Maybe I'm not too seasoned in altra running shoes to feel the difference between good grip and bad grip though. My friend has these and used them last cross season and I think she fell in some wet races ans I didn't with the lone peaks. So I am nervous problems will present then. Maybe I'll invest in some spikes.

I have a high arch and although these fit well in the shoe box - my toes were fine - they didn't fit my foot well and I couldn't comfortably tie them. Returning them.

This is a well-made cushiony shoe but there's a seam somewhere on the outside of the shoe that keeps rubbing my little toe.

These shoes are just about perfect! I usually order up a half size for sneakers but based on reviews I got my 'true' size and it was just right. When I took them out of the box I actually thought "those are so small no way they will fit!" but they surprised me. They just don't have all the extra bulk I'm used to seeing in sneakers but they fit me like a glove. Like most Altras these are great for my wider toe box and relatively narrower heel. They are super lightweight and move naturally with my feet. I use them for walking and running on streets and treadmill, not trails necessarily though I think they'd be fine for that, as well as casual wear (actually hoping the black comes back in stock so I can get a second pair for that purpose). Overall very satisfied!

Love the wide toe box on these shoes! I've used them for light jogging, long walk/hikes on varied terrain (sandy, rocky, grassy), as well as for biking in the city. I have a hard time finding shoes, athletic or otherwise, that don't squish my toes and/or that aren't too narrow in the toe box. They may be too wide for those with narrow feet but otherwise, I think they fit TTS. They also look sharp - got the coral/neon combo and I regularly get compliments on them. Will be buying a 2nd pair as backup for when they wear out.

These are the best running shoes I've ever owned. They make trail running comfortable (if that's even possible). The zero drop is a godsend, and they have just enough cushioning to blunt the blow of jagged rocks without totally muting the necessary ground feedback. I would wear them everywhere, if it wasn't professionally frowned upon. Just a happy bonus that they also happen to look cool!

I have been wearing Lone Peaks for over a year now and love the toe box and the zero drop but found my foot was moving around inside the shoe too much. I have worn the Superiors twice now and love them. Same great space in the toe box but no more sliding! Another reviewer mentioned sizing, i found that I had to go up a size (10.5) in the Lone Peaks but this was WAAAYYY too big in the Superiors. I returned my 10.5 and bought a pair of 10s. One reviewer mentioned they are slippery, I was a bit disappointed to find I slipped quite a bit on pavement this morning but the trails were fine. The rubber did not seem 'sticky' enough in the cold.

Ran my first marathon in these shoes. It was a trail marathon and the shoes + Altra gaiters worked great for me on the trail. I am still running in these shoes both on trails and roads and very happy with them.
