I used these boots on an 8-day hike in Switzerland and noticed the waterproofing was easily abraded. I continued to use them on trail use in Montana and can say the quality is definitely an issue. I don't wear them everyday but have found that the sole is coming away from the shoe at the tab on one boot and the waterproofing issues continue. Altra has had issues with their uppers ever since they started, and these boots are no exception. That being said, they fit me perfectly (after trying 26 pair of boots including the black version of these same boots), so I am going to take advantage of the 50% off sale currently and buy another pair. I hope the company can get their manufacturing down and produce a higher quality version of these comfortable boots in the future. They are a bit pricey for a shelf life of < 6 months of occasional, not really hard use.

I got these to be in the snow and rain. They were great for about 20-30 overall miles but now they get wet pretty easily. I'm thinking the water is coming in where upper meets lower. Tons of great traction!

I bought these shoes hoping they would be my winter running/hiking solution. I like them but they developed holes where they flex in the forefoot. This happened after about a month of use. If they can solve this problem I will consider them again. Otherwise too expensive for a shoe that doesn't hold up.

Got these last week and wore them on a hike on a very familiar trail. It had rained the day before but I couldn't believe the lack of grip on anything wet. Lots of exposed roots on this trail and every time I stepped on one it was like I was on ice. My feet did stay dry though. Super comfortable right out of the box but won't work for what I bought them for. Disappointing.

I am a long-time Altra customer having owned close to 8 different pairs of their footwear. The fit is always good and I really appreciate the larger toe box which allows for a much more comfortable walk or run. For some reason, the soles on the Lone Peak are not very grippy. I did a hike yesterday and slipped repeatedly! There are better models in the line up with a better grip.

I have been using my Lone Peaks as a trail walking shoe. I love the concept of the wider toebox and the zero drop design. It's actually hard to go back to "regular" shoes after wearing these. My issues stem from what I perceive as a lack of quality control. My first impression was that although these were very comfortable right out of the box, they did strike me as somewhat "flimsy." After owning these for a few months, I can say that the basic construction, in terms of engineering, is sturdier than I had expected. The one exception to this, is the thin waterproofing layer over the fabric. It seems to have some abrasion resistance, but delaminates at points where the fabric naturally folds or creases. Speaking of waterproofing, the RSM fabric is quite effective, at least until it starts breaking away. I would definitely prefer a Gortex product for breathability though. The other issues I have are simply manufacturing defects. These shoes really should have been marked as "seconds" as far as I'm concerned. There are several cutting sewing and gluing defects, but only one has actually been an issue for me. The foam against the back of the right heel has a ridge which causes pain on long walks. I am able to overcome this by not tightening the strings as much on that side. What's really strange, is that the left side, which seemed perfectly tapered when the shoes were new, is also now developing a similar ridge. All of this said, I've actually enjoyed the shoes overall, but I do feel that at the price I paid, these were not a "good value" by any stretch. I'm not ruling out a future purchase, but at this price point, I would really expect better.

So this is a great boot the only complaint is the little piece of rubber on the heel. It gets caught on everything. Within 6 hours the heel started to come off. Still a great shoe but this issue needs to be fixed before I buy another pair.

First pair had gaiter loop tear out when tightening laces and tread was coming off bottom after a six mile highway walk with 40 lb pack, returned for black pair 11 miles into 20 mile hike on OHT sole was pulling away from toe and gaiter strap hole on side was pulling off side . Adhesive let go. Next weekend a half marathon the other shoe had adhesive letting go around sole. Shoe was extremely comfortable and supportive and want another pair not sure if the ETech water proofing is to blame though.

So the LP 4 low fit great. It fit like the LP 3, which was perfect for me. I figured that since the waterproofing is on the outside of these, it shouldn't change the fit at all. These fit at least a half size too big. I am also worried about the integrity of the waterproofing. Being that it's on the outside of the shoe, it seems very susceptible, to tears or punctures. Time will tell, but the biggest annoyance is really that Altra just can't get their sizing consistent. These have the exact same sole as the other LP 4's so they should be sized the same.

I am really disappointed in this hiking shoe and I'm a big fan of Altra. I've bought the Lone Peak trail running shoe for years and recently switched to the Superior 4 trail running shoe. Those shoes have been great so I went to Altra for a hiking shoe. I wanted a high-top hiking shoe for hiking vs running trips and was looking for a waterproof or at least highly water resistant shoe. I bought this Lone Peak 4 MID RSM waterproof shoe on November 28th. I have averaged hiking two or three times a week. Less than two months later the lip of the sole on the front of the shoe is already coming apart (see photos). The shoes themselves look like they are very old and worn, not less than two months old. I live in San Diego and while the terrain can be somewhat rocky, it's not like I was mountain climbing with these shoes. The final straw was today when I was out and got caught in a brief rain--like 15 minutes and while it was a bit more than a drizzle, it did not qualify as a hard rain. When I got home and pulled my boots off, my socks are wet. Water proof? These boots are not even water resistant. Again, super disappointing as I came into this purchase a big fan of Altra shoes. I still love the zero drop and the wide toe box and the shoes have been comfortable to wear, but the quality is simply poor. I still need a high-top hiking shoe and I'm unhappily going to go back to a Salomon shoe, as I have at least not had the same issues with low durability and rain porous "water proof" shoes. I think Altra needs to pull these shoes and go back to the drawing board. Improvements are definitely needed.

These running boots are fantastic for both running and hiking, but the tread fell apart after 180 km of trail running and hiking and the tread on the toe needed to be shoe goo'd.

If you’re a stickler for the little things and expect a waterproof shoe to ensure water stays out avoid these. Tongue is not wide enough at the top for my liking. Would have been awesome if there was a neoprene fold sewn in. Expect more at this price point

I have some old men's Altra running/hiking shoes with a nice wide foot bed that lets my toes spread out. These are narrower and my toes burn after hiking a mile sor so. I returned them. I appreciate Altra's return policy. I hope they decide to make the wider Lone Peak hiking sneakers again some day. I would be a lifelong customer if I could keep buying them!

Bought these to make hiking in PNW during the wet winter months. First time out today, very comfortable to wear on an 8 mile hike. I wore a rain coat and rain pants to stay dry. It rained pretty much the entire time, mostly light rain. Feet were soaked by the end of the hike. I stepped in a few small puddles along the way, but nothing deep at all. When I took my shoes off, both feet were wet, especially my toes and the bottom of my feet. My ankles and everything above that were completely dry (probably because of my rain pants), so the water came in around the midsole and the upper. Again, they were comfortable, but waterproof they definitely were not even close.

Bought these because they were light. Been on maybe 6 hikes. The sole is coming off the shoe by the toe. There's already a rip in the fabric by the ankle. Doesn't support the ankle like a regular boot. Comfort and grip is good.

I have hiked about 30 easy miles in these and I wish I would not have gotten the waterproof version. The waterproof coating is already delaminating from The shoe at crease points and one spot has started peeling. They are typical Altra comfort, but such a bummer about how quickly they delaminate under easy conditions.

Difficult to put on my feet because there is not enough room over the instep. Making them uncomfortable once I managed to get them on. Length was OK. Doubt they would be breathable with all the plastic overlay covering 60% of the boot front.

I absolutely love my low cut Lone Peak 4s! So I figured a taller waterproof version would be perfect for my job as an off road tour guide in Moab. So I ordered a pair and tried them on when they arrived. The shoe was so tight on the instep of my foot, I could barely get the shoe on or off. Will be sending these back

I have used these for hiking and snowshoeing through last winter and the beginning of this winter. I had the same problem as other reviewers have mentioned--the waterproof material flaked off, allowing water in. Also, the heel cup/area on the inside of each shoe has broken down and something is pushing out and jabbing me in the heels. I did get a decent winter's use out of my shoes, and they are some of the most comfortable hiking shoes I have owned. In terms of mileage, I hike around three miles most days--not extreme use at all. All told, I have maybe 400 miles on my shoes. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I expect decent hiking shoes to hold up longer than that.

Gave the LP4 a try in both RSM and Mesh in mens 11 - unfortunately both were extremely narrow (we're talking Nike narrow here). Did not have that nice full foot Altra toe box and mid that lets your toes splay out. Tried to size up to an 11.5 as some other folks have mentioned, and while the toe box and upper had a little more room, the shoe length was too big and consequently bent in the wrong spot anatomically. I'm an 11D, just slightly near the wide side and a touch high mid foot. Really wanted to get into the LP4 (I have a pair of Torin 3.5 Knits that are the best fit ever), just surprised how drastically narrow the LP4 is in comparison. How about offering wider sizes for the masses? Or maybe a Torin Trail, or even a Torin Mid Trail?

The Lone Peak is my winter shoe of choice. The good: The eVent is an improvement from the 3.5's neoshell. The outer sole is a definite improvement from the 3.5's as well. The bad: unfortunately I think a lot of other features are a step in the wrong direction. The midsole is less cushy than the 3.5's which plays a big part in the 4.0's being less comfortable. I have put around 100 miles on them and they don't feel broken in. In fact, when I tighten them for a long trail run it causes pain in my tendons (mid-foot) and my ankles. The mid-foot pain was solved by removing the little strap that helps cinch the laces tighter, good idea in theory however, the snugness wasn't dispersed enough, it put a lot of stress on my tendons. The padding around the ankles seem to cause deep bruising, it doesn't look bruised but that's what it feels like. It's a bummer because I looked forward to putting the 3.5's on every morning during a multi day hike. I kinda dread wearing the 4.0's, they just aren't comfortable (for me). Overall, I like the 3.5's better. I'd love to see a thicker midsole again. I'd also really like to see Gor-Tex. Although I cannot recommend the 4.0's, I still love Altra's and I look forward to the next iteration.

How is it that the sizing of this shoe is so different than the regular lone peak 4.0 trail running shoe? I normally wear a size 12 but the lone peak 4.0 I had to size up a half an inch to fit right. With this shoe, I ordered a 12.5 thinking it would be the same but that was not the case. The 12.5 fits like a size 13 and it makes a popping sound everytime I walk in them.

I didn't even use them because the fit was way different than the 3.5 mids I have. They felt like I was wearing hard plastic shoes. I have been accustomed to the 3.5 I guess that Altra needs to bring that design back. The 4s were just very uncomfortable and felt like I had clown feet on. Onto the next pair. Maybe if they made the 4.5s in a mid I would buy them and try them out. I like having a little extra support on the ankles. This will not deter me from using Altra shoes though. Just a matter of finding what's right for me.

Never seen or heard this but the fabric on the RSM shoes buckles and pops whiles walking or running. Really loud and ruins the outdoor experience. Never experienced something like this. Perhaps the Lone Peak with mesh rather than RSM doesn't make noise.

LOST A CUSTOMER! -I owned the previous version that was not the RSM and would wear them night and day if I could and they were my go to for all things outdoors! Sadly something changed with the redesign as I used to wear an amazingly comfortable size ten. After two size attempts I cannot get a 9.5 to fit as they are either to thin or no room in the toebox! Looking forward to a redesign of the redesign!
