I've been an Altra guy for years, namely because they seem to be the only manufacturer that builds a shoe with a reasonable toe box. I don't know how anyone crams their feet into narrow Nikes/etc when they could be wearing Altras. Granted, Altras aren't always the most attractive shoe for daily wear. A run well over 1000 miles a year, and have for years in Altras. My shoe of choice has been the Paradigm 2.0, but Altra typically can't let a good thing live and continually changes model styling every year. I've been searching for something better. This Escalante Racer fits the bill. It's not as cushioned as the Paradigm, but it wears like a dream, and has enough cushioning to make things worthwhile. It's extremely light and comfortable and should make for a good daily trainer, as well as a really good race-day shoe. Everything else I've worn seems heavy compared to these. I wear 10.5s religiously, but 10.5s in the Racer ran long and floppy in the toe for me. I actually ended up going with 10.0s instead and they fit snug. If I have any complaint about the Racers it's that they run a hair tight in the midfoot for my taste. But for folks that are used to Nikes/whatever, these will probably fit normally. All in all, I'm a fan. These are nice running shoes.

I'm attracted to Altra because of their wide toe box; that's really great for the shape of my feet! Although I'm a trail runner, I can't use Altra trail shoes because they are just too big up front for single-track running over varied terrain. (In fact, the only time I've fallen in twenty years of trail running was when my Altra shoes snagged on something - that happened two different times.) So...I bought these road shoes for their comfort and style. The most important thing to know is that the folks at Altra are serious about "zero drop" and a fairly minimalist approach to footwear. I find that wearing these shoes takes some getting used to - you really have to walk differently, engaging your whole foot and becoming conscious of the fact that you have relatively little cushion, especially in these days of 'like walking on a cloud' athletic shoes. But overall I think that wearing a VARIETY of shoes will be good for the long-term health of my feet.
I'd also recommend:

After years of running in barefoot type shoes (also sandals) I needed some footwear with a little more protection, and also zero drop. While these are not minimalist shoes, they offer slight cushioning which allows for longer distances, but not enough cushion to eliminate ground feel. The wide platform prevents pronation, which is great for people who are prone to sprains and twisting ankles easily. The mesh upper breathes so well, that feet stay cool, and the feel is akin to a sandal. Fantastic shoe! I anticipate racking many miles training in these for marathon and Tri season.

I've been using altra since 2017 and I've used many model and by far the Escalante racer is the best one yet. Shoe is very responsive, lightweight and can be good for all kinds of runs and durability to handle all kinds of terrains.

I use this shoe for walking and everyday comfort wear. It's very comfortable, light weight and breathable; on cool days I can feel the breeze on my toes with plenty of space and breathing room for my toes.

I've had a pair of these shoes since April, so about 8 months. I've out about 600 miles on them, and the show fabric still looks new. These have outlasted my last three pairs of shoes by 200 miles so far. The sole has some wear, but not enough to justify retirement. I am buying another pair just to make sure I am ready for when they finally wear out.

Love this shoe! Perhaps a bit pre-mature to say, considering i've only owned them 1 day and run just 7 miles in them, but, when all is said and done, this could possibly be the best running shoe i've ever owned. Perfect blend of comfort, fit, style, well-cushioned, but stiff controlled response that seems to pop off the road just as fast as my foot hits the ground. With that said, no offense to my fellow runners who carry a few x-tra pounds, but I would not recommend this shoe for heavier runners.. Although more than durable enough to serve as a day-to-day trainer, this shoe is clearly more designed for runners who enjoy that minimalist-like feel, with a little extra support, but yet who carry a little more of a slight-of-build frame.

Every pair of Alrta I own, and its about 6 pairs, feel great. I have a hard time wearing any other brand of shoe now. I have a very wide foot, and these are the most comfortable I've ever worn. Altra, please make a dress shoe!

This is my first pair of zero-drop, low-stack-height running shoes, and I'm impressed. I ordered both this version and V2, and I have to agree with most reviewers hereV1 is more comfortable. However, the width is too narrow for a size 8 (my regular shoe size), so I had to go with an 8.5. It felt a bit weird at first, but once I got used to it, it became the most comfortable running shoe I've ever worn, especially compared to my high-stack, high-cushion running shoes. I primarily use it for treadmill runs. I hope Altra continues producing V1 and adds more color options. I would definitely buy another pair!

Please make this shoe again! I've been running it for nearly 10 years and probably have purchased 12-15 pairs. This is the best shoe you make.

Make this shoe again please. Please please. How much torture of the next generation shoes that are worse must we bear? Ya the upper is mesh and will deteriorate faster but the lightness that this shoe brings is far superior and worth the shorter life overall.

I went through about 10 pairs of these. Was a great shoe. I am moving away from Altra if they do not offer a proper racer. Stop fixing things that aren't broken.

I have clocked thousands of miles on these shoes, they are natural, light, responsive, and really are the perfect way to train your muscles to running without support and more natural. The other pairs just don't do it for me. PLEASE bring back the Escalante Racer and the Altra spirit.

Please bring this shoe back! I bought multiple pairs and still wear them, even though they've seen more than their fair share of miles. I bought the Racer 2, but it's not the same. These are the King MTs of road runners... Bring em back!

Makes me sad that this blue is leaving production. I wear this show for all distances and prefer it over Riveras. Light and breathable, it's great for treadmills. Responsive for roads. Seriously, don't chamge this one!

The best shoe altra has made. It's a shame they try to reinvent the wheel on shoes that do not need to be changed in any way. KEEP SELLING THESE PLEASE

Switched to these shoes about 1 year ago and have had zero (repeat ZERO) injuries since. Switching to neutral shoes took some getting used to but there's no going back once you become comfortable with them. Please do not change the original Escalante (V1). Also all the colors are sold out except for smaller sizes. Please restock them.
