Tested these boots out on an 8-mile hike in cold, icy conditions. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they performed. My feet were warm and the traction was great. There were no hot spots on my feet and they stayed comfortable throughout the hike. At one point while crossing a frozen stream, my whole foot became submerged in cold, icy water. My foot was soaked, but remained comfortable for the remainder of the hike. Even after being submerged, my foot stayed warm! These will be my go-to boots this winter!

I have hiked in this boot three times now with air temps starting at 4 degrees and never over 19. My feet have not been cold yet. Icy and snow covered trails have also not been a problem, the Vibram traction has kept me safe and slip free. I have even taken to shoveling snow in my Thermo Freezes, because I stay warm, dry and upright even with the snowy, icy driveways we have had this year.

This boot is a wonderful surprise! Adventuring in a colder climate - winters can be tough on the feet if you don't have a solid boot to get you through!
Lightweight and waterproof, I hiked through ice - water - snow - mud and not a single drop of water came through. These boots WILL let in water from the ankle if you don't have gaiters though so keep that in mind. Waterproof does not mean you can do all things in water. The arctic grip keeps me from sliding on slick surfaces. This is a great boot for hiking and traveling to and from work and home during the cold months. For sure a solid friend for your feet and I would recommend everyone give these a try!
It helps that the style is top notch! A great boot indeed!

I absolutely love these shoes. The are warm and dry. I also like the loop designed to hook snow gaiters on. I can hike for miles and my feet never hurt. All around great shoe.

Perfect fit and very comfortable right out of the box! I no longer complain my feet are cold!! I intend on buying a second pair because I know I am going to wear these out very soon. There are on me every day, sometimes all day! Thanks Merrell, great job!

LOVE this footwear! The first thing I noticed is how my heel is firmly seated;then the arch is well supported with plenty of toe room. I have a knee injury. My knee feels aligned and able to walk with minimal discomfort . I find plenty of traction even on ice. Wearing this boot every day!

I don't usually write reviews, but I love this boot so much I had to. It's so comfortable and not bulky at all. It feels like an extension of myself! I feel reassured about walking in slippery conditions when I take the dog for a walk in snowy, icy weather. I love them!

This boot is a great example of why I've been a loyal Merrell customer for over a decade: unbeatable comfort, performance, and durability. Right out of the box I walked 3 miles in complete comfort; Week 2, I walked 42 miles sightseeing in London, and in both cases my feet were as comfortable as they are in my 8 year old Merrell hiking shoes that have taken me faithfully up & down mountains on 3 continents. Living in a cold, snowy climate, I'm really excited to have the Vibram Arctic Grip on these boots, so I can extend my hiking season. Thanks Merrell!

So far I am loving these, haven't had any ice to contend with yet, but have been in snow and my feet stayed warm and dry. They are comfortable enough to wear through a 10 hour shift on my feet.

I researched and tried on 8 boots, and these were good, but didn't make the final cut. They were very comfortable, but fit more like a hiking shoe and less like a hiking boot, so I didn't feel it had enough support (or height to keep out snow) at the ankles. I liked the Arctic Grip Vibram sole for use on ice though!

But I found the shoe to be too small, or at least too tight in width. It's also made of some sort of plastic in much of the shoe and my experience with this material tells me they won't stretch in width like a leather boot will. Otherwise they are comfortable and, for someone else, good boot for winter. Also they are fairly attractive for a winter boot.

Boot fit true to size other than heel was loose and slipped up and down. Boot was light weight and water proof and had good sole for walking on ice covered roads without slipping.

I did not keep these - one of many winter boots looked at. Love you, zappos! My feet LOVE Merrells that I can wear in a 5.5 - sole exactly works for me. I did not order these in a 5.5 so I don't know about that. I assumed that winter socks would mean I would need a 6. The 6 felt ok. But I don't need a boot this "good" - I have a short walk to work and otherwise am not really out in winter that much. So they may be wonderful - but not for me.

I really, really like the look of these, standout style as usual with Merrell footwear. I like the big sole, more surface area as you walk on typical winter conditions. As a winter shoe, the low ankle is not ideal. I use gaiters, most come in winter pants anyway, and it helps, for sure. I can still show shoe without getting cold wet feet, but even a little bit higher would have been nice and I'll be using a taller pair of boots for snow shoeing. However, I've found it is a great boot for the shoulder season, when it's sometimes still cold outside, but not necessarily wet or snowy. In an environment with mixed conditions, such as a chilly November hike or an early April excursion. I used them on a hike yesterday with light snow falling and 35 degrees, but a little mud, and sun off and on. They worked great. Kept my feet warm and dry but still being athletic and giving me traction on terrain.

I was searching for a winter boot that had minimally 400mg insulation for warmth in sub-zero temps.
The shoes are a perfect fit (my usual size).
Traction is good in snow but I add ice cleats in icier conditions. I can feel the difference in warmth in temps 12 and higher, but for lower temps my feet are cold and uncomfortable. I must add that I have poor circulation which may effect this outcome. I'll continue to enjoy these shoes in appropriate temps and will continue my search for higher insulation boots.

Great for walking in deep snow, with good grip! Except my right foot pinches, right beside my big toe. Left side is okay. But it pinches to a point where I can't wear it anymore. Maybe it's just the material of the shoe, because I have a different type of Merrell that I love.

Bought these for walks in the winter. I have very small ankles and could not lace them tight enough to keep my heel from popping up. I have to return. Otherwise they were as expected.

Love the grip on these boots....FANTASTIC..... Size is fine.....
BUT...like every pair of Merrell's I have purchased recently, there is always a little little "glitch" on the fit. In the past, its been something like a "strange bump" in the fabrication of the toe area that is irritating on ONE shoe...or... a little bump in the heel construction that rubs on one boot.....this time, its the inside of the boot where the top lace hook ( metal) is attached to the boot. It is not flush with the boot ONLY on the left boot, so rubs on the ankle bone. I have tried repositioning the "tongue" to cover this , but its rather awkward to do that.....puts the tongue totally off center. Because the grip on the sole is SOOOOOOOOOOO good, I"m trying to figure out how to make these boots work.......quality control seems to be an issue with Merrell's product. I DO like Merrell products and keep hoping for the perfectly constructed shoe/ boot!

I got these shoe/boots to be safer when walking my dog 2x daily up and down very icy hills. They perform beautifully for this purpose, although I still exercise great care. I normally wear a size 9 and my right foot is a tiny bit wider than my left. So I had to order 9.5 and cannot wear thick socks--thin summer cottons are my only choice. That said, the shoe/boots are so well insulated that the cottons do the trick just fine. Still, I wish these came in a wide width for when the temp drops below minus 20 and I may need to wear woolen socks. But all in all they fulfill the purpose for which I bought them, and I actually love them enough that I ordered a pair in another color, just in case anyone is watching me walk at 6:00 a.m.

I absolutely love these boots, have the high ankle model that was purchased last season (2019). To my surprise, barely within the beginning of the second winter season of wearing these boots that the right boots seems defective. The boots are very well taken care of, cleaned of any snow or residue and stored well for summer months.
.
The boot/ exterior is unglued from the sole, both the left and right side section of the fore foot. Leaving a decent once inch gap and unglued seem on both sides. Unfortunately. having this issues appear after one season of wear, which may be a defective boot, is very disappointing. It definitely impact the quality of the boot.

I bought these as I wanted a warmer weight boot/shoe for cold weather ( 20 and below) as I've worn Merrill hiking shoes for years. I had much difficulty in breaking them in as they are much stiffer. Unfortunately, I did return these due to the discomfort.

First day out in 35 deg weather - which we consider mild in Maine. Fit? Very comfortable! Grip? Good! No boot is really going to completely prevent ice slipping. Warm? NO! Like one reviewer already noted - toes were freezing very quickly! So disappointed! I had on a good weight boot socks too. Not sure how I'm going to be able to use these - when there is ice they won't be warm enough to wear! Ugh!!

I bought there because of the insulation and being assured by the store that they were truly warm boots. They are warm EXCEPT for the toes! After walking the dog around the block, about 10 minutes, my toes are cold but the rest of my feet are toasty. Thought it might be my circulation but felt the inside of the boots after returning home; the boot didn't feel cold or even cool, just the toes were cold. Both boots were evenly cold in the toes-manufacturing or design flaw? I'm really disappointed.
However, the Arctic Grip is great on the Minneapolis sidewalks!
