Perfect everyday jacket whether you're in town or outside. It's worth spending money on a piece like this as it's so versatile.
I'm 5'11" / 167lbs and the M is a great fit. Slightly wider in the shoulders and narrower in the waist than similar jackets from competitors, which suits the more athletic build.
Design, materials and construction are all top-notchthe cut of the sleeves is particularly good for overhead work.
Love it!

The weight to warmth ratio is amazing. I am a person who is always cold and this jacket keeps me warm in the cold damp Whistler winters.
Packs small and light.
Worth it, just buy it, you know you want it.

I chose the Thorium AR to use as my main base camp piece. It's big enough to keep warm in cold conditions, packs down small enough that it doesn't take up a ton of space and is versatile enough to layer up or wear on its own. I also prefer the larger zippers than what is used on the Cerium's because they are easier to grab with gloves on. Great coat!
PS. I also use it in a larger stuff sack to double as the perfect size pillow!

This is not a bulky or a typical "puffy coat" it is light weight and can be worn under an outer shell. It was an extremely cold winter in upstate NY this past year and you will be able to wear it as a standalone in sub zero weather.

This jacket was exactly as advertised. Light weight, super warm and a great mid layer for cold weather. I really like the fact that it packs down into a stuff sack for backpacking/snowboarding.

I've never been cold in this jacket and the quality is superior to anything I've ever owned. Even with a -6 degrees temp - there were no cold spots or leaks. Superior temp regulation and comfort!
The stow bag that comes with it is perfect for backpacking and the super lightweight is ideal. Even with its slight trim fit - you can still move around very well and I recommend this jacket highly.

Great coat for warmth in cold temperatures. Coat is puffy but if staying warm is your goal then well worth it. Only complaint is that the jacket tends to walk up your lower back. but could be that my body size is in between small and medium. Small fits great but is a little short. Medium was way to big in body but length better. I kept the small. Im 6 ft 150lbs.

Returned a medium size to get the large which fits my husband better. He says it's comfortable and does not look bulky. However, he has not tested how warm it is since we have had some nicer days lately.

I recently picked up a Thorium AR jacket as a mid layer for snowboarding. This one will be replacing the duties of my Cerium LT hoodie as in my opinion, the Thorium AR and Cerium LT are close in comparison of attributes but the Thorium is a bit more abrasion resistant (and I didn't want a hooded mid-layer). I wanted to see what I could get out of the Thorium, which is notably less expensive than the Cerium.
On paper, the Cerium LT uses more down (850 fill) , less synthetic fill (100 g/m^2 coreloft) and a delicate nylon textile (Arato 10). The Thorium AR uses less down (750 fill), more synthetic fill (140 g/m^2 coreloft) and a more robust nylon textile (Arato 30). The weight difference between the two jackets Cerium LT (280 g) and Thorium AR (435 g) lie primarily in the Arato nylon as the Thorium is just a bit more robust and a bit more abrasion resistant i.e. a slightly thicker/stronger nylon textile.
Is the difference in price ($80) worth a delicate jacket that weighs 155g lighter and is subjectively warmer? Your call of course. A simple cost comparison reveals that the Cerium LT costs $1.21/g and the Thorium AR at $0.64/g. Here you can see that you will pay more for less, which is common in high-end sporting goods. What other metrics are available? Both are from Arc'Teryx and have the same QC, build quality, and warranty. Since both models have about the same 4-star rating (averaged), you may be happy saving the $80 and going with the Thorium if the 155g difference is of no consequence to you. The Thorium AR is just as good as and arguably better the Cerium LT imo, because it is more robust. I would like to see a Thorium SV model similar to the Cerium SV.
Though, if you're watching grams for a tour or overnighter, then by all means, check out the Cerium line. FYI, I have the Cerium SV hoodie (made too fragile for my taste), Cerium LT hoodie and the Cerium LT vest.

Great jacket for outdoor and everyday use. Regular fit makes it easier to wear multiple layers underneath. The Arato 30 makes it very durable compared to other down jackets.
Only con is I would like two internal pockets.

Bought mine a 4 years ago and used it often. A spectacular bit of kit, perfect for those crisp days when it is dry.
It's packable and warm making it great great wheen out and about travelling when space and weight are a concern.
However, I have found that mine fits a little small. I will admit that I am an odd shape, long body and short legs. I think it needs an extra band or two of down to reach my belt line better.
Yes I could have bought a size up but that would have impaired the fit elsewhere.
My own issue aside it's still my go to cold and dry jacket

I've been wearing the jacket for over a week and I love it. Went skiing at -20c and I used as a mid layer, it was perfect. I'm 5'10 170lbs and it fits pretty good but the torso is about an inch too short for me. A problem I often found in arctery products.

Living in the midwestern United States, this down jacket is often times more than sufficient to keep me warm through the winter by itself. I have had this jacket for around a year at this point and finally have collected thoughts on what to review on it.
The jacket is good - but not perfect. I love the strategically placed synthetic insulation mixed with down. I think that is brilliant. What I don't think is brilliant is that it tends to shed down pretty regularly - not badly but it can. That being said, this thing is a furnace. It is by far my warmest single piece and functions as so either stand alone or underneath my Beta LT Hybrid. It fits under my hardshell nicely.
That being said, it does have a bit of a bigger fit on the inside to accommodate a fleece layer beneath. I usually don't wear a fleece layer, so it feels baggy and a little big at times. This leaves me thinking that maybe I should have gone for a Cerium. I am 5'10", 155 pounds and got a medium in this. I probably could do a small in this instead for how I like to wear my down jackets.
The zipper could also be better. It seems a little flimsy for an AR piece and can come unzipped kind of easily sometimes. Also, being an AR piece I think it could benefit from an internal pocket.
But I still love this jacket. I just think next time I'll get a Cerium instead.

I've had the chance to wear this in the mountains and downtown Chicago, and it has kept me comfortably warm in a wide range of cold temps.
However, as another reviewer has mentioned, the main zipper will not stay in place!! Very frustrating in the wind as I was constantly having to pull it back up. Thick underlayers or scarves exacerbate the problem. If arcteryx would simply have a LOCKING ykk zipper, this is 5 stars.
I'm 6', 195 and L is perfect.

Attention to detail and quality are excellent with this jacket. The stitching is extremely tight, and I have yet to have anything go wrong with construction. The 750 fill is adequate between 20-50 F - by adding my Arc'Teryx Beta LT on top, I can easily take this combo down to 0 F. I chose this over the Cerium LT because of the more robust face fabric, waist draw cord, and the added protection behind the main zipper.
My only complaint thus far has to do with fit. I am 6'1" 180 lbs. and wear the Medium. The chest and torso fit perfectly, but the sleeves and length seem to be about 1 inch too short. From what I understand, the jacket length was made shorter to accommodate a climbing harness. That being said, perhaps it would be ideal make the Cerium LT harness compatible (since it is marketed more for alpine-use), and keep the Thorium AR a bit longer (since it is marketed more as an all-around jacket). I should also note that I do not have this problem with other manufactures (TNF, Patagonia, etc.), although I like to stick with Arc'Teryx because I think the quality is much better.
Overall, the Thorium AR is an excellent jacket for alpine and urban use. For me, it would be PERFECT if the sleeves and overall length were one inch longer. A slightly taller collar would be a welcomed addition, as well.

I bought the Thorium AR for everyday use around the city and in the backcountry. I also own the Cerium LT hoody which I use for ultralight backpacking. The Thorium is a bit warmer, and the shell fabric a bit more durable.
When it first arrived I was a bit disappointed at some of the sloppy stitching and low stitch-counts (especially along the main zipper), which made me wonder if that was also why it was cheaper than my Cerium LT. I sent it back and ordered from another retailer and that copy was quite a bit better.
I really like the synthetic insulation on the top of the shoulders. Gives a little extra insurance in case it gets wet here in the NW, and also keeps the insulation lofted so your shoulders don't get cold (which has been a problem in other midweight down jackets).
The only things I think could be better is that the sleeves, though they have good range of movement, feel like they're about a half inch to an inch too short. These down jackets are the first Arcteryx pieces I've had that problem with. Also, I wish the collar came up a little higher, as it doesn't give a lot of protection around your neck. Otherwise a great all around piece I expect to last a long time.

If you are purely after an understated jacket that has excellent thermal properties, with no unnecessary weight- then you should adjust my rating to 5.
I think the jacket could be a bit less Spartan however with only a small weight penalty. An inside pocket wouldn't go amiss and I'd much prefer the sleeve cuffs to be less insulated (less puffy) on the lower forearms and wrists. The problem is that unless you have very long arms, the material bunches up over your cuffs- meaning you get your sleeves wet for example when washing your hands.
Otherwise the jacket is clearly well put together and well thought out and the warmth to weight ratio is excellent.
The jacket has a fantastic weight to warmth ratio and fits the Arcteryx modus operandi of making garments for purists- not posers.
