Unlike Zia review... I used this backpack and ONLY this backpack for my 1 month trip to Europe. I used several airlines such as KLM, Delta, Brussels airlines, Ryanair and Easy Jet and none of them asked me to even measure the backpack on the control area... I took it always as hand luggage. The backpack allowed me to travel very comfortable with everything I needed... 1 pair of boots, 1 pair of running shoes, 1 pair of flip flops, clothing for 2 weeks (I did laundry once over there), 1 giant jacket-coat, chargers and toiletree products... and it never felt full! I even got to put some souvenirs. I'm a small 25 year old woman 45 kg... I never had to ask for help because it has all straps you need to do it on your own and the support it gives you is excellent as I could take the backpack for hours without feeling like dying.

I bought this pack for a 1-month Europe adventure, travelling in extreme heat as well as wet weather. When I first got this pack, I thought it was very small and was worried how I was going to fit my stuff in it (I bought it to beat the RyanAir regulations). However, this pack exceeded my expectations and it ended up being 3/4 empty by the end of the trip. It does not have many pockets, but that is okay as I just stuffed my itineraries and little things in the outside pockets.

My husband loves this bag. You just can’t go wrong with Osprey. It’s perfect to attach to his Osprey travel bag. Great for our European trip.

I'm actually shocked about how many pockets this backpack has coz I got my hand in the bag and it lost the way out ( joking ). Seriously, it looks so cool with so many convenient strips and clips. It can be used for pretty much everything you need to carry and at everywhere you go. Not sure about the durability because I just got it today but the material the backpack is made of gives me a reliable confidence. I purchased 46 and thank God I didn't buy 65. This one is so big, bigger than any of my backpacks I have ever used in life. I'm very happy that I bought this backpack. I don't think I'll buy it again coz I have the confidence in the durability. Absolutely great product !!!

Perfect travel backpack. Highest quality material and zippers. Comfortable when using shoulder straps or when carrying in duffel mode. Great size, 46 liters holds a large amount of stuff but still has mamagable carrying weight. Clam shell opening makes loading and unloading (finding) stuff easy. I suggest using packing cubes. Good laptop compartment and just the right amount of small pockets. Compression straps work well minimizing and securing load. I own 3 Porter packs, two 46 and one 30.

Overall very happy with my purchase. I feel the quality is great and will hold up to wear and tear well. I used it for the first time this weekend in Austin. I was able to fit a decent 4 days worth of clothing my DSLR Camera case and my smaller Sling bag in it with room to spare in other compartments. On my last day I wore the pack after checking out all day as I walked through the city for several hours more. It was comfortable, even with the weight and its weight distribution was balanced, not causing any discomfort to my back.

Great for traveling or for just flying out of town for the weekend. I was able to fit 2 weeks of clothes and supplies for my Japan trip. The pack also has a section for your laptop, which makes it easier to remove when going through airport security. I was also able to find a lock that fits for extra protection. Pro Tip: If you are the type of person who loves buying souvenirs, just pack an empty duffle bag!

I purchased this bag last summer for my trip to Europe. I read many comments about the bag not fitting the actual carry on dimensions (by an inch) but went with it anyway. I was traveling Norwegian Air and knew they had strict travel requirements. When I arrived at JFK my bag was well under the carry on weight and that was their focus. I'm glad I had only one bag while hopping buses and trains for those 12 days. My friends who live over there commented on how light the bag was even though I packed it with more than enough clothes for my stay. I love the easy access to my electronics/cords/books etc. pocket. I also purchased the travel cubes which made it easy to find my things without spending a lot of time looking for something.

This is primarily my gym bag. Holds everything and more. Clothes, shoes and lots of gear doubled up. Compartments are plentiful and easily accessible. I know where everything is. Fits comfortably and lightweight even when stuffed. The firm body, padding and reinforcements keep objects from poking through to the back, causing discomfort. Hide just about anything. Zippers are superbly responsive and of high quality. Never a snag. I've has many good bags to know, but this one has succeeded them all.

My first porter46 was basic black and had soft sidewalls. I really liked how light it was. Not sure I'm going to like the added weight, walls, and padding in the new one and the orange color is probably a mistake. I originally bought it for my partner but he prefers a wheeled bag with more features. My old porter46 has some small tears in the bottom and as I head out on a three week trip I'm afraid it would give up the ghost so I'm inheriting the new orangie. I see that the newer version has a much thicker bottom edge and sturdier handles which I think will come in handy. Never had an issue with carry on with my older pack - even on small Alaska planes - fingers crossed that its the same here.

I bought this pack from my local outdoor gear store for travel to Europe and it doesn't disappoint. Unlike a previous reviewer, I've never had an issue with this bag being considered carry-on size, ever. I have flown Delta, KLM, Alitalia and Easyjet and it always fit in the overhead bin, even on those smaller airplanes they use for Delta Connection flights. Perhaps that other reviewer just had to deal with a cranky airline employee that was having a bad day, but the Porter 46 shouldn't have any issues fitting unless you also have the Osprey Daylite pack attached to it. I love the top zipper pouch for carrying my clear plastic toiletries bag in, and the suspension system is top notch; even when the pack is really heavy if you adjust the straps correctly it balances the load and you hardly notice it. I've got the older model with the cushioned laptop sleeve in the front zippered section, but it's super easy for me to get it out before I go through security and just slide it back in. Great design. The pack fits a lot of stuff, too. I can pack for two weeks and not have to do laundry (Spring to Fall travel). I would totally buy this pack again, but I bet I'll never have to because it's so well-built it will probably last forever.

I did a lot of Osprey research for this bag as I wanted an Osprey pack specifically for travel. I do a lot of travel for an organization I am involved with and wanted something designated for that. After I placed the order for my bag I was coming back for a trip and noticed someone board the plane with the Porter 45 I had ordered. I was shocked at how bulky the bag appeared and very surprised the airline allowed the passenger on the plane because no way was that bag going to fit in the overhead (on board a Q4). When my bag came in I was excited to go through - I opted for the teal as I wanted something other than another generic black bag. I picked the Porter 45 because although there was discrepancy of it being a carry on or not, I have traveled with it a few times and it does fit in the overhead bins. If you have things attached to the outside (think camera tripod, bulky jacket) you will have to remove. Be warned if you are packing the bag to it's absolute capacity, it looks like a gigantic bag and you are more likely to be asked to place your bag in the racks. Overall I am happy with my choice - I use this for airplane travel and road trips. It's the only bag I really need for essentials and packing light. I love the option of having it as a bag or a backpack.

Our family made a 20 day trip through Italy with the Porter 65 (husband and wife), Porter 46 (three older kids) and Porter 30. These were MORE than sufficient to take all our necessary clothing, toiletries, shoes, electronic accessories, etc... The Porters fit in the carry-on compartment for the overseas flights - they ratcheted closed easily and compactly. They fit all our different body shapes and sizes comfortably and at times, for extended periods of time. There are sufficient pockets for keeping items separated. It's wonderful to have your hands free for carrying purses, passports, tickets, walking up stairs, hopping on trains... the possibilities are endless! These are our favorite packs to take ANYWHERE and for any trip. Thanks Osprey! Wonderful!

I use the Porter 46 as a day pack, traveling pack, work bag. Most big packs are too long. This works for wheelchair users. The pack doesn't ride to low which helps it clear the wheelchair back rest.

I bought this bag to go on a month long backpacking vacation where I would be taking on multiple flights. Fits perfectly within the guidelines of all the airlines we used. Lots of pockets for organization so its not all in a jumbled mess. Would highly recommend the bag.

Purchased two (one each) for my daughter and me for travel, not backpacking. I can't attest to long wear comfort. I like that the straps can be in use or packed away. I can carry my kid's if walking through large airport while wearing mine. She was able to independently handle/wear the pack when she took it to camp for a week. She is average sized 10YO, and the pack was large for her, but independently manageable. Plenty of hooks and the compressions straps can accommodate a wide variety. Tucked a jacket during travel, my kid had her sleeping bag for camp. For our trip, we each comfortably fit over a week's worth of clothing (wore 2x), requiring clothing for hot and cool temperatures. Jacket. Full toiletry bag. Couple books. Computer. Electronic cords. My camera gear (full sensor DSLR body, three lenses). And room for a couple souvenirs on way back. They EASILY fit in the overhead compartment. Slid righty in, no hold up trying to squeeze them in. That was a necessity as I do not like checking bags. I was worried about this, but they do meet requirements! I REALLY like the bag. The compression straps feel durable in combination with the wrap around flaps. I LOVE the open top "suitcase" style to easily pack/retrieve items. My first Osprey bag. The quality seems very nice. I expect to have for over a decade much nicer than my last backpack that lasted for that long. Definitely plan to have for my daughter until she's an adult.

I have been seeking out the very best carry on pack for extensive travel all around the world. I am an ex-pat living in Eastern Asia and travel 2-4 times a year during the semester breaks. I really need a pack that is light, super durable, has lots of room, and can withstand a car crash. I have had this pack for over 2 years now (the color I chose is no longer available...Green) and have taken it on 2 trips to Europe and 6 major trips around Asia and one to Africa. This is almost the very best pack ever. It is made for the person who can lock his belongings and never worry about someone rifling through it. If there is only one qualm it would be that if the pack is getting close to being slightly heavy the straps get very uncomfortable, almost like a pack from the 1970's. I know it is a great design to be able to unclip them and zip them away and tuck the hip straps away for the unexpected time the airline says you have to check it in which can happen. But I think it is a great feature since travelling to some regions we are left to unpredictable conditions. Some airlines have different standards for sizing that is allowed to be a carry-on bag. What I have learned is to not jam pack it so it can be more flexible to fit in the carry on box when checking in to the airlines. I know to make the straps more comfortable would take some serious designing upgrades that might take away much needed space for the traveler. I also understand that having durable backing and make it breathable is pretty much impossible as it would get torn for the way baggage handlers tend to treat luggage, this is a small price to pay to have such a good pack. I have had no other issue with it being a check in or a carry on. Too bad no bottle pouch, but it would get snagged on something. The padded handles still appear new and through much travelling it show little to no wear. Thank you Osprey once again. I own 4 Osprey packs and this one is by far the most useful.

Yes I could rate this bag higher, I would! I have just finished a three week trip through Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia. This bag performed in a way that exceeded all of my expectations! It was room enough to handle all of my dive gear along with the clothes that I would need for the time that I was there. They was only 1 small plane that I was not able to use the overhead luggage bin with. In that case, the shoulder straps stove quickly and completely out of sight, adding very little bulk to the bag. The abundance of pockets and side areas for keeping and separating my essentials, really makes this a functional bag. You outdid yourselves with this one, Osprey! Thanks for such a terrific experience!

Got tired of dragging suitcases around so did Research and bought this bag. What a great investment!. Not only easily carried camera equipment and close for a week through Spain, managed to get a weeks worth of clothes and 2! Alpaca blankets (thought I thought it was going to bust). Really well made and smart.

I have had this backpack for 3-4 years. It replaced my Oakley, backpacks for travel. My job requires me to travel a lot with very short stays. I travel domestically and internationally. In every airport domestically and internationally, and with every airline, this bag passes security and carry/luggage dimension requirements. It carries everything I need for any trip and those days when I'm stuck at an airport in a different city. From clothes, workout gear, laptop, camera, and most importantly food. Compared to traditional backpacks, this has an extra protection (side walls) that keeps all my computer and camera gear. Most importantly, I always have the need for more space for gifts and it expands to accommodate it. I have had Oakley, Thule, and Timbuk2 in 10 years of similar travel, but none comes close to this in terms of weight, size, comfort and reliability. Most importantly, my co-workers/travelers compliment the styling...

I've been traveling around Asia, Africa, and Europe for the past seven months and I couldn't be happier with this backpack. It's not a backpack you would want to hike with, but if you need to get from point A to point B and from one city to another - this is your backpack. It has more than enough room. I went on a month backpacking trip in Africa and there was still room to spare after I added souvenirs. I love the sturdy sides and the compressions it has to make it that much smaller and compact. I have taken it on as a carry on for low-cost airlines (Vueling, Ryanair, etc.) and have had no problem - even when I was maxing out the backpack. I don't review a lot of products I buy, but I feel the need to tell everyone about this backpack. I can't imagine ever going back to a regular suitcase after using this. It's so much easier than a suitcase while traveling - you know exactly where it is at all times, you don't have to worry about it getting stolen, and it leaves your hands free to do other things like navigate around a new city. Trust me, it's worth the money and such a good investment!

I'm a big Osprey fan since a couple of years now, and own over ten backpacks (Sirrus 24, Sirrus 36, Stratos 36, Kyte 46, Nova, Parsec, Ariel 65, Farpoint 55, Fairview 40, Porter 46, FlapJill micro). The latest edition to my collection is this AWESOME pack! To be honnest, I first bought it to haul my medical gear and personnal items all togetter while working as a home care nurse. I have to carry all I need for blood works, extra bandages, stetoscope, blood pressure cuff, gloves, etc.. But also my wallet, my iPad mini, my gore-tex rain jacket, my water bottle, my GPS, pencils. Every things fits in with ease. When travelling with all the family, my husband and I are using the Farpoint 55, the Fairview 40 and the Porter 46, and there's plenty of space for everyone! The pack has a U-shape zipper that opens to a big cavernous inside! You can store lots and lots of gear. It is big, but compressible at the same time. The only cons are the not-big-enough hip belt... (would like hipe belt somewhat like the Farpoint/Fairview...) I can't say enough good things about this travel pack

My family of five took a 2+ week trip to eastern Europe this past summer. We were only allowed to bring backpacks. We decided on this model based on its size and ability to add a daypack to it. I was able to pack more than enough clothes (& 2 prs of shoes) and still have room for souvenirs. I like the easy access to the different compartments and also the ability to lock all of them together by aligning all the zippers and threading a travel cable-lock through them. They were easy to carry and made our lives so much easier boarding trains & planes! No complaints!
