I broke a sweat. Not a “its warm out, sweat beading on my brow” sweat, but what i envision a “full blown hot flash will be when i hit menopause, sweat dripping down my forehead, between my boobs, down my back” sweat! I have the skin iest calves ans feet. And i tried! I tried so hard! The thinnest, slippiest socks. And my foot never, ever got in that boot. I tried so hard. I pushed MORE than i did giving birth to each of my four children combined. And nothing! There was no way my foot was getting in that boot. Then i was gripped with fear. Straight out, if i get my foot in that boot, it’s never coming out, fear. It’s 7:32 pm in NJ and about 90 degrees. If i cannot get my foot OUT, then my cover is blown! I cannot tell my husband in September when there’s a chill in the air that theyre the dame boits i have had for years! No! My. Cover. Is. Blown. Theyre going back. Wven though im enveloped by the smell of that beautiful leather and had such high hopes. It’s a sad night.

I like these boots. Have had many leather tall boots in the past, and am very picky about the quality of them. Contrary to some of the reviews on here, I found that they fit very true to size. To address a few reviews I had seen on these: I read some people talking about the width of the ankle being very small... it is, BUT NOTE, this is always true with REAL leather outer, upper, and lined boots. Just like a new pair of cowboy boots. They should ALWAYS be tight in the ankle at first. You're supposed to purchase real leather boots as if they're almost uncomfortable in the ankle, and the heel should even be snug. It means they're just right for the long run. I promise they'll stretch out. It's the way real boots are made. As well, the housing of the foot seems narrow at first too. I'm trusting this will stretch out on these just like everything else. if you have very wide or thick feet, these may not be for you, though. I ordered the normal width shaft, and it juuust fits. I have 15" calves, so if you are a 15.5"+ I would get extended Note: the Cognac is just as distressed as the photos show! I like it, but I think some people expect it to be less so. It's a natural leather look, and not polished and refined. Overall, very well made, sturdy, attractive. Will be good for cute outfits, but also the horse barns.

I already knew Frye's would be the best quality boot out there, and these did not disappoint. I wear a 9.5 in Frye and 10 in most other shoes, and ordered my usual size. I've been struggling to find boots with narrow enough calves, and these are narrow with a slight gap that looks more fashionable with the pull on style than oversized. It gives the boots a slight western look without being a full on cowboy boot. I like the height - I am 5'9" and the boot is about an inch and a half from my knee. I am wearing them currently for the first day outside the house, and they were expectedly stiff for the first half hour, then they just molded and started feeling like I've owned them for years. My favorite part is the color - it is a deep, rich, red-brown. Not too red like a burgundy (the boots also come in a wine color for that) and not a dull dress shoe brown. Their color is so their own that it goes with everything - I literally held a boot against items in my wardrobe to see! Blues and navys, florals, blacks and greys, white, cream, olive... solids, patterns... it went with everything. I have two other pairs of Frye boots 5 and 3 years old, and they look like they did the day I bought them, if not better. I expect nothing less of these with the leather quality and leather soles. I could smell the leather smell in my car driving to work! I recommend these boots as a lifelong investment in a wardrobe staple.

I feel compelled to write a review for these boots, due to the fact that the process for getting the right fit and color consumed WAY more time of my life than necessary. Let me start by saying that Zappos, as always, was beyond AMAZING, and any negatives or areas of concern that I touch on in this review reflect the product itself, and in no way Zappos. I literally never, nor WILL I ever, buy shoes from any other website than Zappos due to their incredible above and beyond customer service. Now, on to these boots. I first thought the Cognac color looked like a lovely fall color, so I ordered it in my normal size, 9.5. They arrived looking like the color online, distressed, and the leather was very soft/malleable. It was QUITE a struggle to get my heel past the lower ankle area, but once on, my foot slid around so much and it was way too roomy. Buh-bye. So I ordered them in the 9. The 9 arrives, and after another wild 45 minute struggle getting my foot past the death trap area, I was able to get them on, and that seemed to be a much better fit for my foot inside. But then I look more closely at them, and they are more than distressed, they're like all scratched up looking. There is also an actual line that runs across the toes on both boots that separates a darker cognac color and a lighter one. What?! Now I'M distressed. Back THEY go. I decide that I'm totally over the distressed cognac, because frankly they've been a bit of a headache and disaster for me overall, and I decide to move on to the dark brown color. Which is apparently called Smoke. I've never seen dark brown smoke before in my life, but I'm not going to dwell on that. I'm psyched, I know my size is a 9 now, so I order the Smoke in a size 9, and they arrive. Oh, what? This leather is not distressed like the Cognac (no big deal), but it's also not malleable and soft at ALL! It's actually a nice thicker, harder leather. I'm all good with that too...except...wait, did my feet grow 3 sizes bigger in the time I sent back the 9 Cognac and received the 9 Smoke? Sure seems like it. I'm laayyyying on the floor, legs up in the air, and my husband is using ALL of his might to pull these down on my feet. Our 3 and 5 year old are watching this go down with interest. No luck. These are NOT. GOING. ON. So...I order the 9.5 in Smoke. [Side note, my current credit card bill is up to about 8 billion dollars in boot charges at this moment in time, but again, thanks to Zappos, those return charges were applied super fast.] The 9.5 arrive. Another awkward session on the floor with the pulling and pushing ensues. Those eventually go on, but...my foot has SO MUCH ROOM for activities in there. These are a hard no. Luckily I had boxed up the size 9s, but hadn't shipped them back yet. I call a friend to recount the disaster this has been, and she explains that there are these things called boot stretchers that you can use that might have really helped my case. But at this point I need to wear these boots for a function that is less than 24 hours from now, so there is NO TIME to get these so-called boot stretchers. NOOOO TIIIIMMMME! I tear the size 9s open again, find some decorative pumpkins that look to be a good size, stuff them in the shaft of the 9s, and let them do their stretching work for a few hours. Shockingly, I was able to wrangle the 9s on the next day, and they were a good fit for my feet inside. In summary...well I'm not even sure what to summarize here. Maybe that (1) Smoke is actually dark brown, (2) watch out for the coloring on the Cognac ones, (3) you should go a half-size down on size, and (3) be sure you have one of these boot stretcher tools......

The color of the leather is beautiful, and it felt like really good quality. However, that's all I know about these supposedly "wide calf" boots. They were cut so narrow in the ankle that I couldn't even get my foot in. Also, they're not "wide calf" I could only get the shaft about halfway up my leg before it got too tight. One thing I noted though is I believe these run large and narrow. The foot of the boot looked to be about an inch longer than what is needed to be comfortable, and seemed really narrow compared to my foot.

I have been looking for a pair of boots for the longest time and I am so glad that I finally found THE pair. I knew that I wanted Frye boots but I didn't want to pay full price for them so when I saw them on sale on Zappos I snatched them up! I looked around and compared prices and this was the best deal that I could find. I got them in size 8.5 in the color smoke. They fit true to size. The color is a dark rich brown that is so complementary to my outfits. I read in some of the other reviews that they were hard to get on, and I would definitely agree with that! It took me a minute to find a way to get them on, but once I did they were comfortable! I am very happy with my purchase and highly reccomend them!a

This boot is BEAUTIFUL! It's the PERFECT whiskey color and texture for a day boot (see photos in natural light below). The wide calf fit perfectly with thin socks (I have a 15.5" inch calf at the widest part) BUT getting a pair of leggings or jeans in there also would have been impossible. Whomp. whomp. Also, the length of the boot was just a little too short with the V-style, cowboy style top for me. I'm 5'2" but I prefer my boots to come up to my knee. So I do have to return these, but I wish I didn't! Photos attached - enjoy my awkward sweats/boots pics, friends. Frye boot is on the right (darker color, no pull straps). Old pair of no-name boots on the left (lighter color with pull straps) for comparison.

This is a beautiful boot. I have tried and sent back many pairs of Frye boots looking for the right fit and color. I did have quite a struggle pulling them on as Frye has for some unknown reason eliminated the pull tabs on this style of ‘Melissa’. Also there is a disappointing black mark in the leather on the front of the shaft along with some scratches in the leather. The photo show the flaws. These boots had never been on anyone’s feet.

These boots are amazing!! They fit perfect the first time I tried them on, and you can't beat the real leather smell. I have always had a hard time finding boots that are comfortable around my calves. My calf is 15 inches at the biggest part, and these boots fit over them with a comfortable amount of room to spare. They fit with boot socks, skinny jeans, or just plain socks. I would definitely suggest the extended calf for anyone with a 15 inch calf measurement. They are so easy to pull on and off! Also, Zappos had the BEST customer service for me. I originally ordered the last year version of this boot, and there was a miscommunication with my order. Zappos helped me right away with great customer service and helped me get exactly what I wanted with this pair, and they came in 2 short days! Do not order from anywhere else - Thanks Zappos!!!

They looked and smelled great right out of the box. When I tried them on, the calf just barely fit (I bought the extended calf size). I would have had trouble fitting my skinny jeans in them. I sent them back because of how they felt on the ankle. When I walked, the boot buckled at the ankle and rubbed in a very uncomfortable way. I suspect this that something to do with the tight calf area and loose ankle area. If the extended calf had been wider, it might have worked for me.

Frye boot review 1. Extended or regular circumference; I bought both in redwood, my calf is a smidge under 15” at the widest point. I really thought I would need the extended to wear with skinny jeans and be comfortable, Wrong! The regular calf mold to my calves and create a better silhouette. I even put on leggings and wore my jeans over the leggings, still fit ok over my calves, if a little snug. (See first image with jeans). The extended boots also fit fine, but due to extra room in the calf seemed to bunch around the ankle, I didn’t like this look. (Second jean image) 2. Color: I wanted a brown boot, got redwood, you should note that the color can vary from boot to boot, my regular calf boot was a bit lighter in color and I preferred that. (regular calf boot on the left in the two boot image, extended on the right) 3. Quality: Beautiful leather, smells great. Nice stitching, both boots made in Mexico, but interesting that the extended boot had inside pull tabs but none found in the regular calf boot. Yes, the bottoms are smooth, but not more so than many other boots I own. I was worried based on other reviews that they would be difficult to get on, slipped right on for me with socks. A little tough to get off, but I think that is related to the width of the calf and I suspect will get easier with time. Keeping the regular calf boots, hope we have a long happy life together!

Beautiful boots, incredibly soft and supple leather. As everyone (almost) has mentioned, these boots are very difficult to get on at first. I definitely recommend placing a plastic bag over your feet first, as this will really help the foot slip in. Having said that, once your foot "pops" down into the foot bed, it's all comfort and joy. Very comfortable from the very first wearing and they're absolutely gorgeous! Simple and classic styling, no zippers to ever break, beautiful stitching, leather inside and out, and even leather soles. Perfect for riding, but very slick until the surface gets roughed up. If you're looking for traction, please pick a different style out sole, because this is not what you want. I have very athletic, rather large calves and they fit snugly right now with short socks. After the first couple of try-ons, I already feel a difference and the leather is stretching nicely. I'm confident that with a few wearings, they will be perfect. Not loose, but loose enough to wear over tights, leggings and hopefully skinny jeans. They are comfortable, classically beautiful, sumptuous leather, low heel for ease of walking and a nicely rounded toe. I ordered the "smoke" and the "slate". They are exactly the same color, except the "slate" is distressed. I'm keeping the slate. They will coordinate with black, brown, grey or pretty much any color I decide to wear. I usually wear a size 7, but ordered a 7-1/2. They are a little long in the toe, but I prefer that over a crowded toe box any day. I'm all about comfort, quality and then style. And remember, when trying on boots, you always want a slight heel slip. That's how a boot should fit. If you're on the fence about this boot, just give them a try. I've been eyeballing these boots for 20+ years because they're expensive, but at this sale price, you can't go wrong. I am so happy I finally got them!

I've been coveting Frye riding boots for a while, but typically have issues with my calves (15.5" with jeans) not fitting at all or gaping in extended calf boots. Finally pulled the trigger on the Slate Extended Melissa Button 2 when they went on sale for Black Friday and I'm in love. I had no problems pulling them on, but they are quite snug on the calf. The right boot was tighter than the left. However, a few minutes into wearing they started to ease up already and felt like a second skin, I don't think I'll have to get them stretched out. Great quality boot and super flattering. I have fairly narrow feet size 8.5 and the fit was perfect. The Slate color is a bit more distressed than I had hoped for, but does a great job of balancing business casual without being too dressed up. Can't wait to get many years of wear out of these boots!

The boots are relatively easy to slip on and off. However, there is absolutely no tread on the sole of the shoe. It’s smooth leather. I was slipping and sliding just testing these on my hardwood floors. I can’t imagine trying to walk in these in wet or icy conditions. Sending them back!

So I read, A LOT of reviews before purchasing these shoes and I'm glad I did. I learned quite a bit about how real leather boots should fit in the beginning. I wear a 6 1/2 - 7, and tried the 7 because I worried about getting them on initially. They were too big, sending them back. The 6 1/2's were definitely more of a struggle to put on, but thanks to a review that suggested putting your foot in a plastic bag, I have them on now. (There was a point where I was supine, one foot in the air, with my 11-year-old pushing on the heel, me pulling on the shaft and our puppy licking my face), but it worked! Success! I have about a 14" calf and these are comfortable around them with skinny jeans on. I'm very happy with my purchase and will be keeping these.

I have had my eye on these boots for years and finally purchased them this winter. They are exactly what I hoped for- nice leather, narrow enough shaft for my non-muscular calves, and no zipper! The foot is true to size, I bought my regular US 9.5 and there is no pinching at all, just a little slide in the heel which Frye says is normal for the first few wears. My only very minor complaint is that the color is darker than I hoped it would be, closer to a brown than a more orange cognac. But I hope that as the leather distresses with wear this will improve.

Love these boots! First, I’m thrilled to see the shaft isn’t too wide, nor is the foot area. Not everyone needs wide shafts or wide shoes. These aren’t narrow, but are what I think of as the older standard “regular”. I did return a 9, my normal size, to get the 8.5. They’re comfortable right now, but where it’s a little hard to get the foot all the way in, it will soften over time. I would compare the shaft to Stuart Weitzman or Aquitallia. I take a 9-9.5 in those brands. Also, the pull tabs aren’t gone, they’re inside the shaft! Great boots...Good buy!

If, when you first try on these boots, you can't get your foot past the ankle of the boot, try putting a plastic bag on your foot before slipping it into the boot. It worked like a charm for me! I was about to give up, but then I read someone else's suggestion about the plastic bag. Phew! I'm so glad I can keep them. They're beautiful, and I know they'll stretch!
