The toe cap seems narrower than the designed shoe width. I regularly buy New Balance 15 4Es and they usually work really well for my wide forefoot. I put these on in the evening at home, and had blisters started within 15 minutes after walking less than 50 yards and mostly sitting. I could feel the sharp edge of the toe cap on both boots through the fabric after reaching in.

Ordered a half size larger than normal and fit perfect with sock on. Super lightweight and great ankle support. Large boot but work boots are large...so be prepared.

Here's the deal ....... When I opened the box I was shocked at how large this boot looked. There is a lot of boot. Felt like breaking in would require too much time. Sent the boot back and ordered the shoe model. Sometimes I order a 4E for more space in the toe box. There was more space in this toe box than I would ever absorb. The shoe model arrived today. Seems like this might be workable. I will give it a day or two on the job. As of the moment it feels comfortable. We'll see.

Our company "suddenly" required mandatory footwear in response to a company wide safety analysis, revealing toe and ankle injuries. Because I need a wide size, and wear orthotics, I was able to purchase outside of the "company's" recommended vendor store. Having worn New Balance Men's Leather 928v3s for many years, I knew that I was going to receive a comfortable pair of shoes. When I received my purchase I was more than satisfied. I walk several miles per week outdoors, on uneven ground, and can spend 8 hours a day working on bare concrete floors. The shoes are extremely comfortable and seem to be very durable, as I tend to shoe shoes no mercy, in both wet and dry conditions. Unlike the prior mentioned shoes, these were comfortable from the first wearing, requiring no breaking in. All of the statements about these shoes, on the web site I have found to be true. Con? Made in China - but truly a quality product.

Bought these for my husband as a work boot. He has several issues with his ankles, having broken them a few times and needs a shoe that will not only support the arch but support the ankle as well. I had bought him a pair of work shoes from New Balance that he loves, but he wanted to alternated between a shoe and a boot. Now this man is very hard to fit as his feet are not quite the same size and both this pair of boots and the last shoes I bought fit him to a tee. He can work in the shop all day and his feet are still good in the evening - not bad for a 70+ year old man. What makes him so happy with these is that there is no breaking in period - they fit great from the get go

Just got these in the mail - exceedingly fast delivery, ordered Saturday, showed up Monday! First impression was how short they felt. I typically wear a 10.5, and ordered an 11 due to reviews. When I put on the boot, my toes hit the end. After standing up, I realized that these are a lot like ski boots, and you have to kick your heel into the heel pocket so your foot doesn't' slide around. After kicking my heel into the heel pocket, and re-lacing....WOW. VERY comfortable, and light for a boot. Sometimes when a boot that is cut like this is laced to the top, it is instantly uncomfortable, because of the shape, and tongue placement - NOT SO with these boots, comfort and support are only increased. I am looking forward to putting some miles on these at work. I can still "reach" the end of the toe box if I try, but doubt that I will have any trouble with them making my toes sore, particularly after break-in, having my heel in the pocket correctly. Insole insert is thin, about 1/8th inch thick, and while comfortable, don't know how long that would last. I had ordered a pair of SuperFeet copper insoles with the previous pair of shoes I ordered (different brand, fit poorly). After exchanging the stock" insoles out with the SuperFeet copper insoles, these fit fabulously. Huge difference in arch support and heel comfort. Looking for something that will fit "off the rack"? Here it is. Just remember, order a half size larger, even if you have a wide foot and order the wide size. Again, I typically wear a 10.5, and with my heel in the heel pocket, these 11's fit like a 10.5 usually does for me. So far, these feel every bit as nice as my Doc Marten's did new, perhaps even better. Just put my broken-in (not broken down) Doc Marten on the left foot, and I'd have to say, these NewBalance 989's feel better, all the way around my foot!

My new boots fit great right out of the box. I wear 12 4E with a pretty wide foot so I need to be careful when purchasing shoes/boots online. I was looking for new boots to replace my old Dunham boots that are no longer available. I use these for yard work, hiking, and leisure. While I haven't dropped anything heavy on my toes, the front protection appears to be very strong. If looking for this type of shoe, this is a very good choice.

This is my first pair of composite toe work boots and I am amazed at how light it is. So far the fit is ok, but I warn others if your wear extra wide shoes like I do (9.5 4EEEE) go ahead and get about a size bigger because the composite does not 'give' like a running shoe or regular boot will. I returned the other pair because I knew right away there is no 'give'. I just got my 10.5 4EEEE and the fit is snug and comfortable, but I only have worn it my first day. I hope the boot will 'break in' eventually because I want 2 pair of these guys only to wear for work. I am so use to the leather steel toes for so many years, I had forgotten how heavy they are. And heavy wears you down sooner than you know. I was wearing safety steel toed boots only when I absolutely needed to, and it was a pain maintaining 2 pairs of shoes at work and changing into the other.

I originally purchased this boot to wear in an industrial security officer setting, but I am now going to wear them in the Campus Security Officer setting. Light and comfy, warm too. I had no idea NB made boots like these. It's been my experience when I like a boot, think Hi-Tec, they do away with them. Please don't and/or give us a heads up, that is how you will keep customers buying from you over and over again. Thanks a lot.

These fit and feel great, like wearing a sneaker... lightweight durable. 2-weeks in tho, so only time will tell. Good thing there's an annual Boot allowance.

These are very light and seem to fit true to size. I had replace the insole to get more comfort but not big deal. Time will tell on durability, I fabricate sheet metal. They seem to be well constructed. So far so good.

I needed above the ankle boots for my new job, so my 412s went into retirement. The 989s are perfect. Light and like walking on a cloud.

I've had many reconstructive surgeries and tend to Pronate extremely making it very difficult and painful to wear shoes. Ive FINALLY found a boot I can get my wide foot into and they are Heaven Sent!!

Long time since I wore boots with toe protection. I had to relearn how to walk in them. Now that these boots are broken in, I am chopping, moving and stacking wood on the side of a hill for hours, without discomfort. The toe protection has saved me some bruises too. Now I love these boots. They are not for hiking mountains, just moving mountains.

I really liked this pair of boots and they fit correctly. Given the construction, this pair will last a long time and is easily worth the price. Unfortunately, my arthritic feet were not a good match and, with regret, I returned them. Thanks anyway, NB.
