Verified PurchaseReview for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
Outdoor Research makes excellent clothing. For sun hats I prefer their Outdoor Research "Activeice Cap" for design and comfort. This Sun Runner Cap, at least on my head, just "looks goofy". I would have purchased this if the cape had been sewn around the brim similar to the Active Ice cap. The Sun Runner seems to have a longer cape. It is very comfortable. It has a chin strap and it accommodates my DeWalt earmuff style hearing protection when I am using power equipment outdoors. It would be good for fishing and would accommodate a gaiter. I can't get past my looking goofy in it.

I was looking for something more than a cap for running in the sun. This is perfect! I particularly wanted something that would protect my ears and neck and this does the trick. When I run past the neighbours they enjoy yelling out "here comes the flying nun" or asking if I am joining the French Foreign Legion!! It's a neighbourhood hit!

cap is lightweight, fits well on the head because of the adjustable strap in the rear. would order your usual size or a size up because the extra material on the side could help more with sun protection. I thought it would shelter my face cheeks more so definitely still need to wear sunscreen on the nose, chin, etc.
The reason I purchased this item was because of the string in front which helps as I had assumed. The highlight of this cap is the neck protection.

Had a few of these over the years, my kids seem to keep borrowing them and not returning them:) This is my go to hat for backpacking and day hiking.
These hats are great for keeping the sun off and the bugs away. It's pretty easy to remove the flap if you want to, I like to remove the neck in rain to wear it under a hood.

Had one for 15 years; it still works well, so I bought these for family.

I explored many corners of the internet to find a suitable hat for my husband's Ironman Canada adventure, particularly the run where head and neck protection is so important. He got loads of compliments from other athletes and I felt so happy we found something that didn't overheat him and also looked so good on! Very happy with this purchase, it definitely didn't disappoint!

After seeing countless runners wearing this flow-y. bright white, nun habit-looking thing, in races like Badwater, I knew there was something good going on.
One run in the blazing Los Angeles sun proved just how right we all were: this hat is awesome. Super-comfortable and adjustable, it fit perfectly (even on my giant head). The flaps are easy to manage and provided a level of protection I've never felt. And it weighs nothing but delivers so much coverage!
I'll be wearing this lid when I run the 100-mile Javelina Jundred in October.

I bought this hat after hiking to Glen Aulin on the hottest day of the year.
With the intense Sierra sun beating down on my neck, I saw a thru-hiker blitzing along the path wearing one of these with not a drop of perspiration on him. Made the decision right there to get one. Have enjoyed it ever since.

I like having the option to put on the sun/bug protection for my neck. This hat is comfortable, has a shorter bill, no button on top, great adjustability, and looks good.

Great hat with multiple uses... obviously keeps the sun off, also my hair back, but used it amongst swarms of mosquitoes and it kept them from buzzing directly in my ears!
Thumbs up.

I needed something to help cover because I go for really long-distance runs and the damage can be severe in the cali summer. Found this and it's perfect! Beautiful, of quality, convenient, affordable! Thanks so much OR < 3

I wear this hat all the time for running and kayaking. It's light and drys well and fast. Will definitely get a second one as this hat has become indispensable to me as I spend a lot of time outdoors.

I bought the hat for a trip to SE Asia & Africa. The hat with the flap on does look a bit silly, but it comes off easily and is then just a nice baseball cap that's very comfortable and stays on well. I plan to use the flaps when faced with the worst of the heat, they seem to work better than anything else I've tried and pretty much anything effective looks a bit silly an

I have used this had for a few trips now, and it is much better than my older cowl hat. I particularly like that the cowl comes a bit further down and fully protects your neck. The other interesting thing I found is that it works quite effectively to keep bugs away from the back of your neck. I was able to use my bug net less.

I purchased the Sun Runner Cap ahead of a 3 day hut-to-hut hike of the Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Great (along with sunscreen) for running/hiking above tree-line or in open desert/chaparral. It is lightweight, protects the back of your neck, dries quickly, and offers just enough insulation for cold breezes that come through at elevation. Above tree-line, the sun can catch people by surprise, even if it appears to be cloudy. Protect yourself and avoid heat exhaustion or sun burn with the Sun Runner Cap. It goes without saying, always be prepared when venturing out into nature. Bring sturdy footwear, enough layers to account for changing weather conditions, and more water and snacks/food then you expect to use. A goal should always be to make it home at the end of the day/trip. Enjoy your time in nature...the world needs more of it!

I love this hat for the sun protection on my neck. I recently wore it several days in a row for multi-hour hikes. With the hat, I didn't have to sunscreen my neck or face, which is a huge upgrade in quality of life when hiking our otherwise outdoors. I would definitely recommend this!

It claimed to be a sun protection hat aimed at running and it excelled in everything it promised. No sun burn on my (exceptionally) pale skin and it was quite comfortable. Wicked a lot of sweat on the forehead well too. I would definitely recommend this hat to others as a solid summer running hat

The Sun Runner Cap is an essential piece of gear for my long days of ecological field research in the hot, sunny, arid deserts of Utah. The lightweight and protective material has kept my neck and ears from burning. The fitted cap and chin cord keeps my hat in place in windy conditions. The versatile design has also been crucial in decreasing my exposure to dusty roads, plant materials, and other allergens throughout the day, as I've been able to tie the cape to cover my nose. I may add Velcro to the cape to cover my nose more easily though. I definitely recommend this excellent product!

A couple weeks ago, we hiked down to the Colorado river and back up in one day from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. 18 miles and 100 heat. We had to carry all of our water because the water stations were closed. I have been a fan of, a wide brim straw hat for my big hikes and backpacking. My son who does long distance running bought one of these hats and said he loved it so was some trepidation, I decided to give it a try. I didn't want to have a bad time on that hike. As it turned out, I loved it and that will be my new headgear. It was light and cool, and I was able to dip it in streams and put it back on my head a few times, I'm a fan.
