I order the Fortrez after been extremely disappointed by the Patagonia R1 hoody's fabric that fell apart in just a day hike at the Grand Teton. The Fortrez has the classic Arcteryx design and what I love the most is the versatility of this piece. I am a 5 9", 192lb, athletic build with broad shoulders guy and the large fits perfect. The outer fabric was designed for layering and to just be used as a stand-alone piece in milder weather. I use mine for running/biking in cold conditions, around town, or in the mountains. I also realized that the material retains its warmth even when the jacket is soaked in sweat.

Great fit. Perfect weight for a fleece. I've used it for rock climbing mountaineering and skiing. Fits well under just about all of my Arcteryx gear.
The face fabric held up great climbing off width at Indian Creek.
Only downside is the seem on the inside of the hood occasionally rubs weird.

A great mid layer and its versatile. The right weight to pair with anything else or wear on it's own in moderate conditions. The only thing that might improve it is a 20D or so material on the cuffs/hem to protect the stitching and material. The shoulders perhaps too but that might go too far. Turning this piece into a full hybrid layer would be a mistake as it would reduce it's versatility.

Awesome hard wearing fleece jacket.
Size L fits well as mid layer. Size up if you want a casual "outer" jacket.
Great on the hill or about town (I'm 185cm tall and weigh around 100Kg, active/father-figure).

I had a cheapo fleece that I found worked well for high output (up hill) winter activities and wanted something better. I got it in the Fortrez! It fits well, I'm 6' 3" 185lbs and got a large which is a tad big, but I wouldn't want a medium. It provides a good amount of warmth and is very breathable while working hard going up hill. It's major weakness is wind. Anything more than a breeze is going to bite right through. That's why this is perfect as a mid layer. It can work well as a stand alone in cold calm conditions or while hiking up below tree line. Most winter activities you're going to have a shell with you anyway so throw that on if you encounter wind / precipitation. I took it up Mount St Helens and it was fine as a stand alone until above tree line. We encountered very strong winds so the shell went on and the Fortrez kept me cozy warm under the shell despite cold windy conditions. The hood and balaclava fit perfectly and are super comfy, plus you look like a ninja. How cool is that!?! I love this fleece!

Very nice Jacket. A word to describe it would be "versatile". It is warmer than regular fleece of similar thickness due to it's ability to block wind. While not as wind proof as Polartec Windbloc, it significantly reduces the cooling effect of light to moderate winds. Another major advantage to the Fortrez Hoody is it's ability to shed moisture. Water simply beads-up and rolls off the jacket. When out in light precipitation for an extended period of time, this jacket kept me completely dry. Even the exterior of the jacket was dry within minutes of taking it off, inside.
All-in-all, it is great looking jacket that performs flawlessly. I am 6'2" tall and weigh 188 lbs. It is an athletic fit and the medium is perfect for me.

I bought this hoody on a whim. I originally came with the intent on buying the Delta AR fleece. I ending up seeing the Fortrez in black and quickly gravitated towards it, not knowing anything about it except my already profound experience with Arc'teryx gear.
At first, I started using at as an all around hoody, whether it be meetings or school, nothing too extravagant at first. Then, I got the idea of running in the rain with it. I was surprised on how dry I was when I was done. I found that I had only been wet around my wrist where my suunto is. My arms and torso was completely dry to my surprise. I also found how likable and the utilitarian functionality of the hood and the balaclava-like face cover worked as well, in which the face cover could also be used as neck wrap. Makes for a good get-up if you want to be a backpacking ninja.
In use in the back country, I found it as a warm mid-layer in combination with a soft shell, but not as a solo wind breaker. Because of the great breathability while performing activities, in nature, it isn't great at wind protection, hence the reason why the Fortrez hoody isn't falsely marketed as such. In response, the Fortez does make as a great solo active wear piece where one needs breathability and can easily protect one's self from the weather by adding a soft shell or hard shell.
On two recent search events within the last week of this review, one where I was in a mule helping transport other searchers to their OA, the other for searching for evidence, the hoody performed well in both senarios. They both tested the uses of the Fortez as a solo and a added mid-layer piece that resulted in positive feedback in recent wearing. I greatly am happy to say this much good about the all around active performance of the Fortez hoody.
P.S - if you're reading this Arc'teryx, I would appreciate the stitched logos come back for all pieces of gear. Just my little nuance.

The Fortrez keeps me warm bouldering at the BYW during those sub-zero Ontario winter days and you can safely stash a bottle of Bodacious Red blend in the pocket!

A truly fantastic layer, very warm and more importantly light. Highly recommended as a midlayer in harsher colder conditions and the perfect layer to put over a t-shirt when hiking.

When I bought it in UK, It was the only jacket that fit me well. Since than any other brand I bought, I feel sorry for spent money. At the end I wear this jacket nearly every day all year around except 2 summer month. And every year I have to get new one. I had dark blue colour, but this colour is no longer available, it was best colour to fit all the other colours of wordrobe. Azul is too reddish. Now I am looking for Anaconda colour.

The exterior material looks really good up close, better than in the pictures online. Kind of a 3-d checkered pattern. I doubt anyone can make a fleece that is more resistant to pill/abrasion, mine looks like the day i bought it. It's actually a bit water-resistant so I have worn it in light rain and it didn't soak up water. I wear it hiking and have worn it on its own in slightly below freezing temperatures with a phase SV base layer and i wasn't too cold, it definitely keeps you very warm. breathable too, but just don't use this on a hot day, cool/cold weather only. I'm 6'0" 200 lbs, I wear a large and it fits well. The built-in balaclava face-guard actually came in useful on super cold days. It has a sport fit, not baggy but not skin-tight.

So far I've found this jacket to be comfortable, the fabric and feel of the jacket is unique, and I can't wait to get more use out of it when I head north to visit my old stomping grounds. It's true to form and fits my body well. No extra material to bunch up or create a bulky feeling. The hood fits well and isn't overbearing when it's warm.

Well constructed and very warm as a base or mid layer. I like the face mask option built into the hood too. This is a very good piece of kit for any outside activity IMHO. Highly recommended!

I've had this top for about a year and it looks the same as the day I bought it, so it has held up very well. No snags, pulled threads, or fading. It's the perfect mid layer to wear under a soft shell as the hardfleece fabric slides against the shell instead of pulling and catching like most other mid layers. I wear it camping, hiking, to the office, walking the dog, and even under my chest waders for fall and spring fishing. It's probably the most versatile top I own. I found myself wearing it so often this fall that I bought a second one.
Due to the trim fit I can't wear anything more than a t-shirt underneath it though, because the forearms are very form fitting. The hood is a nice fit and works well under the hood of an outer layer as well. I personally have never found a need for the balaclava, but it's unobtrusive and not even noticeable if you wear the hood without using it.

This was my insulation layer from the rim of Mt Ranier down. It fits snug for mountaineering, and has excellent insulation. Literally had a base layer and the Fortrez (with hood on) from about 13000ft until camp Muir.
