Review for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
The perfect backpacking backpack. Just came back from my trip to Thailand and this backpack made traveling easy. It was definitely carry on compatible; while I was checking in, the employee asked if I was checking any bags and I said no. She just saw my backpack and said oh ok, you're good. I was able to fit my tablet, 3 traveling cubes full of clothes, Teva sandals, Rainbow sandals, 3 pairs of jean shorts, a medium Joby gorilla tripod, headphones, and more. Would definitely recommend this to anyone that wants a backpacking backpack without having it look very bulky. Once it's full, it makes you look you like you have a turtle shell on!

Loved this bag! It's great for traveling for a few days and fits in an overhead compartment. I did 4 days with no problems, the only thing I wish was that the middle pocket had some better organizer pockets, but I got a cool electronics organizer that slips right in and I can pull it out when on the flight. Overall, I'm very happy

To travel as a couple we got the Farpoint and Fairview 40. Super easy to pack. The support structure spreads the weight out so effectively they're very comfortable. Others talked about the laptop sleeve being problematic but we don't take one with us so I can't speak to that. Also we didn't experience the water bottle difficulties others did. We put the bottle of the water bottle in the mesh and ran the compression strap through the top of the bottle and it worked very well. The only downside we saw was that the material on the back keeps you pretty warm and sweaty backs are frequent- but I think that's true of most packs. Love these backpacks! We're excited to keep using them.

I bought this in anticipation of a two-week trip because I wanted something a little bigger than my North Face pack. I can't say enough good things about the Farpoint 40. To give a little perspective on the use, I traveled with my two young kids and husband and we spent two weeks traveling in SE Asia. We visited 6 countries and took 12 flights. Needless to say, we packed and unpacked a LOT. My husband was jealous of my pack (enough that he inherited mine and I bought the Fairview 40 when we returned) because it fit things SO well and is exceptionally accessible, without looking like you're carrying a suitcase on your back. We flew on United, Cebu Pacific, Lion Air, Air Asia, and Air Mauritius. I'm 5'11" so am picky about leg room, but this pack fit well under the seat on every plane (I tried it before placing overhead, just to see), including the three budget airlines, plus fit with ease in the overhead bins. I easily fit three eBags small packing cubes (11 x 6.75 x 3) inside and secured by the Farpoint's inner compression straps, plus a pair of flip-flops, electronics, a LectroFan white noise machine (ridiculous, I know), and toiletries bag. Still had plenty of room. I suppose if you overpacked this, it would be hard to fit under the seat, but I honestly had zero problems. I'll keep recommending this pack to everyone, it's awesome.

I own three Osprey packs but this was my first and it's been with me everywhere. I have taken it to India twice, once for two weeks and once for 2 whole months. I''m about to take it to India again. I've also used it for several shorter domestic trips as well as simply a weekender bag. It has held up great. There are some signs of scuffing and a few small tears but that's to be expected. I used it both as a carry-on only and checked bag when it was too heavy for carry-on in domestic flights within India. I have always been able to pack everything I needed in this bag. I think the biggest plus are the internal compression straps. This makes it possible to pack so much more than you would think. I have the S/M which is technically only 38 liters but I can tell you I haven't missed those last two liters at all. The hip strap is also vital for when the pack becomes really full but it works like a dream. As others have said, the position of the laptop compartment isn't great and can make packing difficult if you are trying to pack to capacity after a long trip and you have several souvenirs you're trying to get home. I think if they ever redesign this bag with the laptop compartment against the back, they'll have THE perfect all around travel bag for one bag/minimalist travel.

I bought this pack primarily for business travel to replace a rolling suitcase, knowing I would use it for leisure as well. Excellent concept, design and execution. Very durable; I've loaded it very heavily with no issues. Ideal for remaining hands-free in airport lines. Absolutely fits in every overhead bin I've tried. The pack is comfortable and roomy (I'm constantly surprised at how much I can load into mine. A few minor gripes: the interior compression straps work great but can get lost while packing; the exterior mesh pockets could be a bit roomier for a water bottle, etc but the exterior compression straps hold everything in; I find the partitions in the laptop pocket to be superfluous; exterior pockets on the side would be handy. Final note: I thought I would use the zipper cover over the straps but I don't; it's just not convenient before boarding, etc. I do use the overly large storage pocket for the cover for other items like my rain jacket, laptop charger, etc. as I find the Velcro closure very secure.

I bought this bag for a round the world trip with my boyfriend. I bought him the same bag for the trip because it was so good. We've saved hundreds of Euros on flights because these bags fit as hand luggage on all flights. Not only that, 3 months into my trip I broke my foot and had to use two crutches for 6 weeks. The bag was so well fitted and neat that I was actually able to carry it with my two crutches no problem!

This is a great bag. It has fit on all airlines as a carry-on, never had issues in that regard. The bag opens up very wide, and is easy to pack. It works well with packing cubes, and the compression straps along the outside are great to cinch the bag down. I have used it for camping, weekend trips, day hikes, 4-5 day backpacking trips (in moderate climate). The bag is great. The only complaint is that the laptop pouch is not heavily padded, and just seems as though it may bend the laptop if the bag were to be too full.

Love this bag. It holds quite a lot and is really functional for my use over the last year. I've used it for weekend trips and airline travel, but perhaps more surprisingly, it's my "everyday carry." I can fit my laptop, notebook, gym clothes and shoes, lunch for two, coffee, and umbrella in this bag quite easily. I love having hip belts if the pack gets heavy or if I have a long walk with it. I've also used the shoulder strap in messenger style when carrying another backpack, and it's been a delight!

Purchased this bag for a 3 week trip to Europe. I really like how simple the design of this bag is. Not too many pockets and zippers while still holding a lot. I would suggest buying compression cubes to help pack more in. The option to tuck away the backpack straps and turn into more of a duffel bag is a great feature.

I was very impressed with the quality construction of this pack as well as the travel specific features but it had not fit me well. I purchased this pack to use it as a carry on travel bag. I loved the way that the shoulder straps and hip belt can be zipped up, in case I did have to check in the pack at the airport or if I just wanted a cleaner look. So no worries about those straps getting caught in other luggage or on the conveyor belts at the airport. The padding on the straps, hip belt and two carry handles is substantial. There is a lot of adjustability with this pack but unfortunately no matter how I adjusted the pack the shoulder straps would dig into the sides of my neck. This pack was the m/l size. I ordered the same pack but in the s/m size to see if the s/m would fit me better. I am female, 5'2" tall, weigh about 103 pounds and have a 16 inch torso. I am aware that these packs were designed to be unisex. I had done extensive research into travel specific packs and this particular pack had great reviews from both men and women. If the s/m size does not fit me I may just have to purchase a female specific pack, which is not a bad thing. I just have not been able to find a female specific pack with all the great features of a quality, travel specific back pack.

My wife and I used the Fairview / Fairpoint as our only bags for 2 weeks and 4 cities across Italy. These bags held everything we needed and allowed us easy movement while using trains, planes, bus and cars to get around. We didn't bring laptops (just a tablet) but others have commented the laptop sleeve is not against your back and I agree it would be better there. Similarly the mesh water bottle sleeves are useless when bag is fully packed and compression straps are tight. I just used a small clip on bottle and problem solved. Packing cubes highly recommended. Have used these for long weekends and it holds up just as well. I won't go back to checked bags ever again. One additional item- I needed a short extender for the hip belt and Osprey sent not one but two 6 inch extensions with clips for no charge.

Excellent bag. This is my favorite for trips. Very comfortable to carry. I wish Osprey would do the following: 1. Add laptop sleeve on the back 2. Fix water bottle holders on the front which are useless. Nothing fits in there once the bag is packed. 3. Add carry straps on the bottom to strap in additional gear. 4. Make mesh panel a little deeper.

I've had this backpack for 3 years now. I've been all over Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Hands down the best backpack ever! I bought the S/M version so I think it's only 38L which is still plenty of room. I've thrown this backpack on buses, trains, in the trunk of cars, everywhere. It's tough as nails. One of the best things I like about this backpack is the eyelets on the zippers. These are perfect for a lock which I use all the time. It's a great deterrent when staying in hostels also, although I've never had a problem. Recently, I was forced to check my backpack as luggage on a flight with Spirit Airlines (first time I've ever checked my backpack as luggage). Unfortunately, someone maliciously cut off my lock and destroyed the zipper eyelets. Osprey, with no questions, sent me a new set of zipper eyelets at no charge and they paid for shipping! I'd highly recommend the Farpoint 40. But if you choose something else, make sure you purchase from Osprey. You won't be disappointed!

I really, really like this pack. I've had mine for 1.5 years and have probably spent about 40 nights traveling during that time by plane, train, taxi, and foot. The bag has held up great overtime with very minimal signs of wear. I can fit about 4-5 days worth cold-weather clothes in packing cubes this bag, along with an extra pair of shoes and all other toiletries, snacks, and whatnot. On trips longer than that, I just do laundry. If I could make one change, it would be better inner organization pockets. My packing cubes help, but the front pocket becomes a major black hole. I do recommend trying this bag on. I'm a medium frame 5'5 woman, and the s/m Farpoint fits me much better than the women's specific version. The same pack fits my 5'11 husband.

This backpack was a key part in my 2 week trip across Europe. This was the only main travel bag I had. I had no issues using this as my carry on even when using international flights within Europe (i.e. Ryan Air). I was able to put it under my chair or above head perpendicularly which was great. I loved the option to change it from a back pack to a duffel bag by zippering in the straps. This was especially convenient when getting on and off trains. I would zip the straps in and carry the bag in front of me as a sort of guide when maneuvering through people. This prevented the straps from hitting people and the backpack not hitting people if I had been wearing it. I still use this backpack for normal weekend get aways and it's been two years since I bought it and there isn't a single sign of wear and tear. And that's not an exaggeration. Not even a single scuff mark on it. The one and only complaint I have is the mesh water bottle holders. Because they are in the front, there's a lot of tension on the mesh. I always had a difficult time getting my Nalgene bottle in the holder. My water bottle often popped out so I would have to use the cross buckle straps to loop it through the water bottle handle so that it wouldn't fall out. Overall, great quality and strong material design.

I was looking for a travel backpack for some time, first was looking for wheeled backpacks but found it kind of not being practical for me, i do quiet a bit of business and leisure travel a year (5-8 times) and well aware of a good backpack or carry-on pros & cons. finally i came to decide between this backpack and eagle creek 40 liter one and chose this, really like it.

This bag goes with me daily and on trips! It's my "everyday carry" holding my lunch (in glass containers), notebooks, and gym clothes everyday to and from work. I love love love this bag. Super comfy, love the hip belts for when the load gets heavy and I'm trying to get some walking in at airports and such. Handles are great and comfy. Love the alternative shoulder strap/messenger bag style carry option as well. I should have bought one sooner! (I've owned the bag for a year and half... very study, very pleased all this time!)

bought this as a little bro to the Farpoint 70, which up to this point i thought was perfect except its non carry on size. But the Farpoint 40, coupled with packing cubes is all you'll ever need. and the fact its carry on sized adds another layer of peace of mind.

I have had this pack in grey for over a year now and used it on numerous short business trips within Europe as well as for day hikes and carrying the weekly shop home from the supermarket. It has fit the bill for all these tasks well. I selected this pack because it was one of the largest backpacks I knew I could bring as carry on with budget airlines (think Easyjet, etc.). I have flown with it at 15-20 times and never had any problems with it being too large for carry on size. I find it easy to pack for traveling or hiking. The small waterproof pouch is great for passport and liquids at the airport (no leaking!) and it is fairly secure once the straps are buckled across it. The zips are super sturdy. The one downside is that although the back is padded and somewhat aerated, you will still sweat if you're carrying this pack a long way or in warm weather - I suspect all packs would have this issue though. The pack still looks in good condition although it's been treated pretty hard while traveling and I've been using it daily for walk commuting for the past couple of months. I am a 5'5" medium frame female (size 8) and purchased the size S/M which fits me well. I would definitely purchase this pack again.

This is a really nice travel bag.. for warm climate travel it is perfect. Compartments are well thought out and roomy. I've taken this pack to Kauai and Mainland Mexico. Both were 7 day trips and I had plenty of room. Very comfortable to wear as a backpack and handles are great to carry as a suitcase. If in doubt by this pack quality is 5 Star.

Purchased the Farpoint 40 for a trip to Europe through five countries by plane and train. It's rugged; yet barely looks like it has been used. With packing cubes, I was able to organize and fit a lot in this bag. This is my 3rd Osprey bag and/or pack. All are well-constructed and very durable. Will continue to be a fan of Osprey products!

I got this pack to take across Europe on a 6 week backpacking trip. I love the way everything fits into, the fit, and the durability. My only suggestion for the company itself is to mix up the color schemes. I know this is a minut factor, but for me if I'm buying something at this price point that will be on my back daily, style is an added bonus! I think introducing new color schemes would be good for business!

I was desperately looking for the best travel carry-on backpack available on the market. I read all the reviews on all backpacks and finally ended up with the amazing Osprey Farpoint 40. No doubt, this was the one ! This reliable piece of equipment was my everyday buddy for almost 5 months in Southeast Asia and I surely do not regret my choice. This backpack will follow me on every single adventure in the future and I will never replace it for another brand or model. This is the perfect travel companion end of the story !
