I ordered these 1440 boots because the 978s that I liked better were too narrow in the toe--left side only--and after walking in them a few miles my left toes were getting really sore. (The right 978 was okay in the toe.) The 1400 boots have a more roundy toe box (like the 928, a homely but otherwise great walking shoe), with plenty of room for my toes on both feet. They would be VERY comfortable if the heels were 2A width, but I've made up for that with felt padding. So I can hike any distance in the 1440s without discomfort; although they're not perfect for my size 13 wide-toe narrow-heel feet. But I've always had that problem with shoes and boots. (I gave the 978s to one of my sons, who says they fit fine.) . Also, I've finally learned how to locate narrow shoes on the NB site and just ordered a pair of 990v5 running shoes in 13-2A to replace the "narrow" 990s I've worn out, my third pair of those shoes. (The trick was to select any 13 Extra Narrow and then start clicking on shoe pictures, paying attention to whether the "Extra Narrow" was greyed out or dark.)

Very comfortable on my feet. And they are getting abused at !I job. The only thing is they run smaller than your sneakers. I'm a 13D in your sneakers, and I needed a 14A in the boots.

I have worn a lot of different NB shoes over the last 25 years. I use custom orthotics and they have always been the best brand that matches up the best with my orthos. I have a small acerage and like a higher top shoe to keep some of the dust and weeds out of my shoes when I am out working and the 1400 fit the bill. They are extremely comfortable and don't have the large bottom lugs that I don't need that a lot of other hikers have.

Terrific product. I previously bought the same boot in brown and enjoyed it so much that i purchased the gray. Very comfortable, lightweight with excellent ankle support. I wish New Balance made a similar summer weight product. I'd by it immediately.

The higher ankle support is just right as I walk so much.

Yup, I'm another man with flip-flop-wide feet. I've been a fan of New Balance 4E width running shoes for decades, so I got these for moderate day hikes or light overnighters with a 30-40 lb. max pack. My feet feel great so far after a few trail walks and some medium steep snowshoeing. No pinch pain at all. I'm OK with the sole contour, which has a pronounced ball-to-toe forward angle bend. I'm not sure how to describe that; like a drop, not a rolling motion as you step.

I bought these for my hard to fit very slim feet husband. Perfect right out of the box wearing a 12 hour work day. He is thrilled!

I've used the boots for about 5 months, and the front edge of the boots are cracking! Very disappointed; thought these boot would last longer, considering how much I paid. I used them for normal activity: walking and once in the woods... So sad.

I work in outside sales on my feet all day and they are comfortable but could use more arch support.
I like the boots but I like my 990v4's better.

We almost always buy New Balance because of the fit for my feet. I read the comments for this shoe and decided that the 4 # I regularly buy might not fit, so I ordered the 13 6E and it fits right. The shoe seems to run a bit more narrow that normal.

I received these boots yesterday. Because I have very wide feet, I was thrilled to find a boot with an extra, extra wide width (6E). Was I every disappointed! I could barely get my feet in them. They were so tight, I even checked to be sure that I had gotten all of the paper filler out. I had. Something has to be wrong with the marking on them. Otherwise, the boots seemed well-made, and they were quite attractive. I have always had good results from New Balance, so this was quite a surprise.

I am a retired guy with a bucket list. One of my items is to complete a marathon before my 70th birthday. Several years ago I blew my knee out running. My doc told me that I should quit running so now I hike. I've hiked in the Bataan Memorial Death March 14 mile Honor March in Las Cruces, New Mexico twice wearing a well known brand of hiking boots. Both times, I had blisters and hot spots develop about 6 miles in. I've tried several different socks and a few performance insoles. Nothing worked. I knew that I would have to find a better boot. The 1400 is it. Bought them a few months back and have logged 100+ miles during training. Not one blister. Not one hot spot. Doesn't matter what weight hiking sock I wear. I love these boots. I am confident that I will complete the full 26.2 miles next month wearing these boots. The only reason that I didn't give them a 5 Star rating rating is that the soles do tend to slide on some wet surfaces. Thanks NB for a great boot.

Length was a little small so I had to return; and narrow was not available in the next larger size so I had to get something different.

These shoes fit very well but that's because I read reviewers who led me to order a half size larger than I usually do. That worked. The price was too high, though. I found the same shoes on Amazon on sale for nearly $50 off, but Amazon did not carry the extra wide width. I appreciate Zappo's carrying the wide width, in fact that's really why I shop Zappo's, but I wish I didn't have to pay such a premium to get shoes that fit. That's why I will always shop elsewhere, too.

Good looking boot and seems well built. However I have a narrow foot (size B) and the narrow(size B) boot that I purchased is still a bit too wide for good comfort. These would be too wide for someone who is a size A.
Will try a different insole to see if that improves the comfort level. Definitely need to order a half size larger than you normally wear. Probably should have returned them because they felt wide when I tried them on, but was in need of something to wear and I think the insoles will help. If you can get the size that really fits I think you will be very pleased with them. Styling is great and looks good. Thanks to Zappos for trying to handle narrow sizes for us skinny footed people.

I normally wear a size 11 1/2 B NB running shoe (SL-2 Last) and find a 13B Model 1400 Walking Shoe fit my feet perfectly. SIze 12 was too tight in length (painfully hurt my toes) so I had to go to 13. With NB the key is to also find the right "Last" for your feet. In my case a SL-2 Last is perfect (I think the toe box is a little wider and the heel is narrow.) I previously wore NB shoes built on a SL-1 "Last" but the narrow toe box pinched my toes causing blisters.
This is my 5th pair of 1400's and my biggest complaint is the shoe is not very durable; considering the price. While hiking last year in a fairly new pair, both soles delaminated from the shoe body and I had to use Shoe Goo to repair them.
The 1400's are the most comfortable Walking Shoes I have ever owned. Each new pair has never caused a hot spot or blister. I will continue to buy knowing their life is short but the fit is perfect. I's like to see NB build a durable hiking version on a SL-2 "Last".

Not a true extra-wide. Have worn other New Balance shoes that are a true extra-wide (e.g., jogging).

My feet have very specific needs, most of which this product fulfills, but it has become increasingly expensive over the past 3 years. I will have to find a less expensive option for my next shoe purchase.

The last two pairs I purchased didn't last four months. The shoe is not glued very well and comes apart. I have bought the shoes in the past, and held up good. Not anymore. Will not be buying New Balance any more. Will try another brand.

I bought this hiking boot because I like new balance in general , the boot was very comfortable. However within a month the bottom part of the sole began to separate, I took it to a shoe repair place and they said they could try and reply it but chances are it would not hold . They where right . So thinking it might be a one off kind of thing , I bought another pair. Well that was dumb . Same thing again . So no I wouldn't recommend these .
