I've held off reviewing these Vasque Talus Trek Low Ultradry shoes until I could give them a good road test as I have found shoes that sometimes fit at first begin to cause problems later on. After a solid 3 month road test, I can finally say that I have found a shoe that I can rely on. I even ordered a second pair that I'm saving as a back-up since manufacturers (I'm talking to you Keen and New Balance)tend to change shoes that work for my feet into ones that don't or discontinue my favorites. My experience so far out of the box: Fit: I have a very wide toe box, narrowish heels and wear custom orthotics. The wide width work for me. I always have to order 1/2 size up to accommodate my orthotics and that was the case with these. I do agree with another reviewer that the heels are a little wide but I found some lacing techniques on the internet to address that for me. People with really narrow heels may find it difficult to get a good fit. Comfort: Not only do I have oddly shaped feet, they're rife with problems (Morton's neuroma, very high arches, bouts of plantar fascitis). A stiff sole is a requirement for me and these shoes have a good one but not so much that after 10 hours of wear, I'm dying to get out of them. Utility: I need an all-terrain type of shoe as I walk 5-8 miles regularly across concrete, asphalt, ungroomed and groomed dirt trails with uneven, slippery surfaces, beaches, hills, etc. If I were to go on really rough terrain, I'd consider getting the high top boots in this model for more ankle support but this style provides good support and grip. I haven't fully tested the waterproofness of these but have dipped them a bit in the ocean and stayed dry. The waterproofing tends to make these a warmer shoe but since I live in a year-round temperate climate, that's not been an issue for me. Wearing wool socks helps. They aren't the most attractive shoes and do make my feet look kinda large but I've had such trouble finding comfortable walking shoes lately that I'll live with that. I'd like more colors (perhaps black...maybe it's more slimming?). For me, this is an almost perfect shoe and suspect that it will be long wearing based on my experience so far.

These are really classy looking shoes! They feel quite substantial and construction looks to be high quality. I wanted these shoes to work, but alas ... while the width was perfect for my wide feet, the heel of the shoe is also wide - but my heel is not. The heels on these shoes slipped like crazy and that made the the wear quite uncomfortable. I'm not about to gerry-rig something to fit in the heels to take up the slack, so the shoes are going back. I'm very disappointed because I really like the look of the shoe.

I really liked the look of these but after wearing a few minutes inside I realized a few things. The heal seems really big. When I would step, my heal would come out of the shoe. When I made the laces tighter it somewhat fixed that issued but then the tight laces hurt the top of my foot. Also where the tongue is attached to the shoe, the extra fabric digs into my foot. Also kind of squished my toes a little because the shoe was a little narrow for me. I normally don’t wear wide shoes but I also cannot wear brands than run narrow. Unfortunately had to return.

I compared many hiking shoes on line and feel I picked a very good one. No need to worry about the Vibram soles because you know they are tried and true on wet rocks and loose soil. The laces are held by leather loops that are sewn in and should hold up well. There are ample lace loops to accommodate the hiking boot clinch style of lacing that I prefer to hold the shoe tight across the instep when hiking. The shoe's availability in wide was a must for my wide feet and bunions. The shaped insoles are removable to accommodate my orthotics. The manufacturer's customer support was great about getting back to me with recommendations for flat replacement insoles. These shoes look great and still have important features for hiking that have become hard to find in women hiking shoes. They will work well on the trail and on sidewalks.

I was looking for a shoe for light hiking, and this had all the features I wanted, including good tread on a vibram sole. However, the heel is a bit too high for me and started rubbing my ankle immediately. For women with thinner ankles, this is probably not a problem, and the higher profile would provide more support. But I did better with another Vasque style that was a full 3/4 inch lower in the back.

Heel slipped out of back of shoe. Then tying them tighter made the tongue dig into front of ankle. Toe is too narrow for my foot. Needs to,be more rounded. I couldn’t move my toes around at all.

Foot bed was a true wide, no pinching. Toes were comfortable. This seemed to be the perfect trekking shoe, but the problem was the heel was too wide. I tried cinching laces down but it wasn't comfortable. Since I have true "duck feet" (wide across toes and narrow at ankle). this is likely just my foot configuration. FYI, the only shoe that is truly comfortable for my duck feet is the Ryka Devo Plus 2. INCREDIBLY comfortable, but I need a shoe for trekking and the Rykas are too lightweight.

Absolutely loved these shoes right out of the box. The wide width works great with thicker hiking socks. No “break in” time. Great comfort, support and cushion. Been wearing them everyday before we set out on long hike in Peru and have had no problems at all. Also love the olive color.

Sturdy hikers with lots of cushion and a sturdy sole. I usually buy a 9 in hiking boots but had to size down to 8.5 for these.

I have a pair of great Vasque hiking boots and wanted something similar in a shoe. Both times I ordered up a half size and got a good fit.

Although I ultimately chose to keep a pair of Keen's, these were my close runner up out of six different options. I liked the look of them and the fit, but they seemed a bit stiff right out of the box and not as comfortable. I felt that they were a half size smaller (I expected this and ordered a size up which felt right in terms of length). They had moderate support.

At first I wasn't sure I liked the runched top but after wearing them today, I like them. Also I have worn them for a 3 mile walk with thin tights and they feel great- no rubbing or soreness any wear. My last pair of suede Born boots I basically wore out they were so comfortable and I am hoping these will fill the niche. The color is a little darker than I anticipated - a very dark, almost black grey but they go well with a lot of things and I still like the hippie/Boho vibe.

I love vasque boots, but these are a bit too snug, so I am returning. I am normally a pretty solid size six, and that is what I ordered. The color leaves a bit to be desired - it is a bit more muddy brown than I was expecting. They look like very solid fall/winter hiking shoes.

Very nice high quality shoe. I really wanted to keep them but they were a little too stiff for me to comfortably walk in them.

I liked everything about this shoe, but it wasn't quite wide enough for me (I have duck feet and usually wear a WW, so I wasn't surprised -- I think this shoe would be OK if you typically wear a D width). I went with the Merrell Moab 2 instead -- it's definitely wider.

I was going to write about how huge they were, but realized they sent this shoe in a man's 11.5. I wear a woman's 11. Looked like a sturdy well-made shoe.

I also ordered the Mantra. These fit much larger than the Mantra. I would order down a half size in this shoe. Or order both to be sure. My heel kept lifting.

These are nice. They look decent, and they are comfortable, but my foot slides in them a bit, which frustrates me. Some Vasque styles I need a larger size (9.5 wide) others, I feel like an 8.5 wide would work better. I do wish at least through the brand the sizing was consistent. The teal and brown colors on these look good together. Traction is excellent. Padding is good. Arch support is excellent. No ankle support, since they are low tops, but they are easy enough to get on and off. VASQUE: Pay attention: Customers want sizing to be the same across your brand, and currently, it varies way too much!

This is the second Vasque hiking shoe I've tried from Zappos and I wanted it to fit so badly because the shoe is beautiful, sturdy, stable, has a bit of pink in it but alas, it was too tight, even the Wide width. I love Zappos free shipping and returns so I can find a hiking shoe that fits right. I gave it 4 stars because overall the shoe is beautiful even though I had to return it.

This shoe fit well and was generally comfortable except for how high the shoe comes around my ankle and heel. The friction there makes it a no go for me. It might not be quite so bad if the fabric liner were softer and less abrasive, but I have to send this pair back.

I ordered the same size as my Vasque hiking boots, but these low hikers were much too big. Not sure if they fit has changed over the years (my boots are close to 10 years old - that's how long these things last!) or if a different shoe has a different fit. Felt light on my feet and had good support, just too big.

I tried Wide in size 8 and 8.5. In both sizes, the shoe was too narrow for comfort, especially the toe box. Disappointed. I returned both pairs.

Toe box was too tight for my feet. Also, did not like the leather: too stiff. Had to return.
