I'm hoping this review will help those trying to decide between the Troopa and the Troopa2-0. I ordered both: the Troopa in my regular size 7 and the Troopa2-0 in 7.5 (following other reviewers' suggestions). The boots are VERY similar, and the leather quality seemed the same on both. The Troopa has a slightly more feminine look, with a less rugged sole. The side zipper on the Troopa is solid black (on the black version) while the Troopa2-0 has a zipper that is black with a bronze tone. The major difference in these two shoes is the width. The Troopa is much more narrow. I have a narrow foot, and the Troopa was perfect. The Troopa2-0 was much too wide- no amount of lace tightening or thick socks would make that shoe work for me. Also, I found the Troopa2-0 to be true to size in length; I would have had to exchange my 7.5 for a 7 if the width hadn't been an issue. Summary: buy the Troopa if you have narrow feet and the Troopa2-0 if your feet are on the wider side.

I'm used to wearing real tactical combat boots or Dr. Martens but was in the market for something slimmer and sleeker so I gave these a try. Unfortunately, while they are quite cute, they fall short in terms of fit and practicality. I wear a 7.5 regular and ordered a 7.5. The length was perfect - my foot would probably be rattling around in a full 8 - but they were way too narrow in the toe box. I can't imagine how narrow the original Troopa boots are if these are supposedly wider than the originals! Also, I was really disappointed in the quality of the sole. The sole may look like a rubber grip, but it's slick plastic with almost no traction or shock absorption whatsoever. Basically, these may look like combat boots but that's the only commonality. Form over function for sure.

I have to have a pair of Granny / Combat boots in the winter. Leggings, dresses, long sweaters and jeans - they go with everything. I’m picky about them and I’m forever chasing the dragon trying to find a pair I had in the 90s. I’ve chosen form over function a few times just to get the right look and ended up with no padding, hollow heals, you name it. These boots look right and feel right. I’m stompin’ again.

The smell of the cognac leather boots could kill a person. The first time I wore them to work it gave me such a headache, I had to go home early. People were walking around the office asking "what's that chemical smell?". After reading lots of advice online, I aired them out on the fire escape for two days, then scrubbed them with baking soda, and later stuck them in front of a fan for a full week. Now you can't smell them from across a room, but I can still smell them when I open my closet. It's insane. On the bright side they look really cute and match any outfit. They aren't particularly comfortable. For the price, there are too many problems with these boots, but I couldn't find feminine brown combat boots anywhere else. You win, Steve Madden. You win.

This is my second pair of Troopa 2.0. I have them now in black and cognac. Very comfortable and rugged. I didn't buy them to look like a combat boot - I bought them as an all-wear low boot that can handle minor weather but also go with casual clothing. Both pairs - although they look different due to coloring - are both perfect. I wore the cognac pair all summer, and they were not hot. The fact that they are leather means that my feet with breathe, and I can condition them to stand up in wet weather.

The reviews are true: does this boot provide arch support? No. Does it have any cushion for the heel? No. Are they a little stiff? Yes, slightly, but that is to be expected with new leather. I had no problem with sizing (8M). I also found it to be true to color. If you need a boot that is lace and zip closure, to accommodate wide calves, I would recommend this boot. However, it’s not a plush boot. It almost feels as though you are walking barefoot on a hardwood floor. If you are used to the springy Doc Martin type boot, this is the wrong boot for you, full stop. However! If you were a fan of the original Troopa, I would absolutely recommend this upgrade for the sturdier heel and treads.

These were the best pair of combat boots I ever had! I bought them at a different store and wore them almost everyday. They were perfect! They are sleek and light weight. They didn't have the clunky-ness that most combat boots come with now. That is one of the reasons I like these so much. It's hard to find combat boots now with out the huge lugg bottoms and extra heft. I wore them into the ground until they were falling apart. This is the only place I have been able to find them again at. I definitely plan on buying them again. I would suggest buying them half a size bigger and putting a sole insert if you need the arch support. The same goes for if you like to wear thicker socks, they won't zip up well up the sides with a thick wool sock if you buy them snug.

These boots *were* amazing! I absolutely loved them.... until the heel ripped away from the boot after approx. 6 months of wear! I can't resole these, can't fix them (outside of gluing them back together). I'm utterly disappointed! I keep trying to find a good quality boot that will last, that is in this style and I'm having a really hard time of it. It's unacceptable to spend this much on shoes to get 6 months out of them.

Purchased 7.5 and 8 but 8 is a full inch longer so fits like a 9.5. Reordering to compare and see if it’s mis-marked. Spoke with Steve Madden customer support and they assured me TROPA2.0 is legit and not fake. They ran out of characters on the stamper so had to delete an “o”. Waiting to get new shipment tomorrow. Prefer the leather interior in the 2.0. Does smell of shoe polish but will air them outside if I keep ‘em.

I'm usually a 9 in asics and other brands, occasionally I'm a 8.5. I need to return the 9s for 8.5. The zipper was hard to zip on one boot only so maybe a faulty shoe. I had grey ones that I loved but wore out. I can't find more of those new so I got brown troopas and black troopa 2s. They look similar but the 2s are a little wider. The troopa 2 soles look hardier.

These are really cute boots if you have narrow feet and don't need any support. The bottom insole is completely flat and hard. If you have narrow feet, you could put an insole in. But I have wide feet and I couldn't even wear the wide version of these boots without an insole in there. The toe box is way too narrow, and can't be stretched. Cute books, but no good for wide feet.

I wanted to like these boots, but they just weren't all that comfy. No arch support, and pretty hard footbed. To be fair, I have a very high arch, which makes it difficult for me to find a shoe that works well for me out of the box. I usually have to put an insert in. For the price, I thought they seemed a bit cheaply made. I've purchased other leather boots in this price range that appeared much more worth the money. I did think the lace up design was cute, and the convenience of a zipper made getting the boot on and off very easy. Sadly, these went back.

These boots are cute. I tried to convince myself to keep them. I didn't. If you have wide feet, please note that the "Wide" sizes are quite narrow. Because of that, there was no way I was going to be able to fit the arch supports that I'd need to put in. These boots have no form in the sole at all—completely flat. If you have narrow feet and you don't need any support, they are cute, at least!

I'm pretty happy with these! They look good and are comfortable. They aren't too bulky, and I like the zipper on the side. I normally wear a 7 in boots like this but I followed someone's advice to get a half size up so I could put an insole in for better arch support, and that worked out perfectly.

This boot does not come in wide sizes as advertised. My first shipment came in a box marked 9w but with shoes inside marked 9m. Thinking this was just a packaging mistake, I returned and reordered the same product, but it came in the same way: reading 9w on the box but 9m in the shoe. I need shoes in wide due to a foot injury. I'm sure it's a manufacturer issue, but I'm so disappointed as I feel I've been cheated out of a shoe I really wanted to love.
I'd also recommend:

I absolutely love these. A fair amount of room in the toe box and the heel isn't too high to do a considerable amount of walking in. They have the look of a traditional combat boot without the bulk.

I had the 1st Troopa which weren't genuine leather and liked them. I always wished they were leather but couldn't find any like this that were. I been looking for like 2 years now. Then I found these which are the SAME price as the Troopa 1 and REAL LEATHER!!! I'm so excited I'm going to get another pair! My foot grew a bit since the baby I was an 8 and I got these in my new size of 8.5 and they fit perfectly. They are not meant for colder weather btw but great for fall and perhaps spring. They even have better support than it's predecessor! SM, YOU FINALLY DID IT! THE PERFECT COMBAT BOOT!!!

This is the first time I ordered from Zappos. After reading the on-line reviews for these Steve Madden Trooper boots, I ordered my usual size of 8.5M. Received them quickly but the boots were too tight so I had to return them. I ordered another pair in size 9M that are a perfect fit! The replacement boots were also received very quickly. Great customer service and easy return policy. Thank you Zappos!

This is my new favorite daily boots. I bought them when I was in St. Louis and now I moved to Canada. Even in Canadian winter I wear these boots and I love them (not in heavy snow). They are comfortable and stylish. One thing I didn’t like is in the long flights. I usually don’t wear leather shoes or boots on the flight but this time I wore them and my feet swollen and I felt uncomfortable. But I still give these 5 stars for style and the comfort outside of the plane.

I am a true size 9.5, but I usually order a 10 in sneakers and boots, so I was hesitant to order my true 9.5 size in these boots after reading the reviews. However, now that I've worn them for a few days, I am happy I ordered the 9.5! I have a narrow foot and they fit very well. They are a little stiff when you first put them on, but they feel great after just a few wears. Definitely recommend these boots!

I love these boots. I ordered size 6, which is my usual size in boots, sneakers...everything, and these fit me perfectly. I just love the quality, the color is beautiful, someone said about the troopa boots that are more feminine, well these, i must say are feminine too! They dont look rough or anything, they are just as nice. My foot is a bit wider, and they fit me well, i tried the Troopa boot, same size and width and i could barely put my foot in there.. I got the medium width in these and they are just perfect. I think someone with a narrower foot could wear them too, and would probably fit with a thicker sock. They had no smell whatsoever! Maybe i got lucky..anyways, i already wore them, drove the car and even though they are still a bit stiff, they were still comfortable to wear. I can't wait to pair them with a denim dress..yay, i love them!

So far, I’m loving these boots. At first, I thought they felt a bit narrow (weird for me because I don’t have wide feet), but they’ve loosened after a day of wearing them. I walked a lot and was on my feet for most of the day and my feet never started to hurt. Good traction and support. Great find!

I love these boots. I ordered the Troopa 1.0 early last year (and wore them to work almost everyday, and I’m on my feet all day long) and they fell apart after only a year and a half but I still loved them so I thought I’d try the Troopa 2.0 and I’m not disappointed. They seem thicker and more durable. Hopefully these last longer than the first pair. Troopa 1.0 I wore a 7 and in these I ordered a 7.5 and fit perfectly.
