I have owned this backpack for years and could not have been happier with it. I previously owned the Hot Shot, Recon, and Borealis backpack (all of which were great) but the Big Shot's where it's at.

We bought this backpack for our great-nephew. His other backpack was stolen while he was at school. He selected this one as a replacement - will be our Christmas gift to him.

My fianc loves this backpack!! The extra big laptop slot is perfect as well as the big inner space to store textbooks. The back is so cushy that he is no longer having back strain from carrying heavy loads. We have also used this pack on weekend trips and it's perfect as a personal item on airplanes! I would love to get one for myself!

I bought this for my son, who has tons of school books, a laptop, phone, earbuds, athletic clothes to carry. It's great to carry a lot of stuff! Very well made, very sturdy, love the handle on the back so it can be carried as a bag as well. Love all the compartments for all the different things he has to tote. It's the most expensive backpack I've ever purchased, but can foresee that he will be able to use it for years to come. So you can pay $50 a year for one, or buy this one and keep it for many years. It will save you money in the end.

I bought all four back packs for children, and each one loved it. This last one was replacing one he had from 20010. Very durable was used for traveling, school, packing his x box one and so forth. He didn't want to part with his old one, but we found one that he liked.

I bought this backpack because I have a 17" laptop for my college career so I needed a pack for that. All the other packs I have tried really were so heavy on my back and with this one feels like there is nothing much on my back. I have this backpack stuffed with no extra room any where. I will buy this one again!!!

In the past few years I have taken on more east to west coast traveling for work and really needed to replace my sad old backpack. I bought a Columbia, Sog and had an older Borealis. I usually travel about 3 days a week and only fly with a carry on and a backpack. I needed a backpack that can carry a laptop, various chargers and stuff I would need on an airplane. I also wanted a pack I could take on day hikes when I have down time on my trips. This seemed like a pipedream that I could find a one size fits all. Then I found this pack. This really has made my life a bit easier and I didn't realize how much i wanted a pack that can hold extra pair of shoes. So now I can travel with my small carry on with two pairs of shoes for work and now gym shoes in my back pack.
I love the rigid back plate and the upper compartment for my wallet, glasses and other incidentals.
My biggest complaint about other packs where the quick access pocket or vertical zippers on the bag I would forget to close and my wallet would fall on the ground. Moving that quick access pocket to the top of the pack is short of genius. Let me also add the handle on the back is super helpful.
Im rambling on now but I am having a complete love affair with this pack and hope NF leaves this design around for a while.

I have only had this backpack for a couple of weeks so my review reflects only my experience within this time frame. I like this pack - it replaces a 15 year old jansport pack that needed to retire. This pack is a little on the heavier side snd also sits upon the floor (both qualities I was looking for). It does not make my back ache nor do the shoulder straps feel uncomfortable after wearing the pack for a while. Pluses: there are many pockets to store items, a fleece- lined computer slot, the pack open flat to remove and add items easily, and the mesh pockets on the inside of the front zippered pockets which are big enough to hold a liter bottle of water or even sneakers. These are in addition to the side mesh pockets on the outside which are now standard with most packs. I have not tried it hiking yet but will update my review following that experience. I know I will be able to carry a lot more stuff with me hiking than with the old Jansport.

Like my title said, I bought this backpack to replace my old style Surge backpack. I did a lot of research before buying and I am satisfied with my purchase. I knew there would be some things I missed about the Surge but there are definitely some things I like better too. I had my Surge for 3 years and put it through a lot of abuse and it held up great besides that a few of the zippers are no longer working and a few of the zipper tabs came off. No big deal as I still used it everyday and I think North Face would even fix it if I contacted them because they have a lifetime warranty! I didn't even look elsewhere for another bag.
For the pros of this bag: Very comfortable, stylish, roomy, durable, and simplistic. It's made of a high quality material, I like the 2 heavy duty grab straps on the top and front, the laptop sleeve is very thick and padded nicely, and the bag still looks fairly thin even after packing all or my belongings into it.
There really aren't any cons to the bag, but coming from the Surge there are a few things I miss. I miss the little side pockets on the water bottle pouches, I miss the compartment on the bottom of the bag, and I miss the fact that instead of having to take off the waist straps if you didn't want them or weren't using them, you could store them behind the padding on the back of the bag. I need them when riding my motorcycle so I just fastened them together and tightened them until they were against the padding so I did not have to put them on and off every time I needed them. They stay out of the way and I cannot feel them on my back so again it's not a big deal.
I thought I would miss having a lot of compartments, but for school this bag is perfect. I can store my laptop, books, and pens/pencils all in the main compartment and it's very efficient. Overall I would highly recommend this bag for it's great looks and functionality.
