I worked 5 years in trail building/maintenance and conservation work. I've worked with the USFS, NPS, BLM, Americorps conservation corps groups, and other similar agencies and organizations. This is my 5th pair of hiking boots in the last 6 years that cost a ton. I've owned 3 pairs of Asolo 520's, which are very nice boots and practically the industry standard for folks like myself who work in the woods. You'll see about 1 in 4 outdoor professionals sporting 520's in my experience. If you are just hiking, they may last years. Doing trail building and maintenance, they would last me about 5 months before soles start to peel, lining is tattered, water seeps in, and you need a new pair. I know how to condition leather and glue soles. It's not enough. My last Danner's lasted for 24 solid months of use and are still kicking. They have a few loose stitches and need new soles. I got these as a lighter-weight pair of boots and substitutes while I send my old ones back to the shop in Portland for a full recrafting (I replaced outsole, insole, lining, restitch, recondition, new laces). I've heard it said that Danner's are overpriced of just a status symbol. In my experience, they are neither. They are cheaper in the long run if you really use your boots. They are sturdy, reliable, beautiful, U.S. made, and fully re-craftable if you get the right pair. I'm sold for life. I am only a Danner customer. I have no personal or business relationship with any person associated with Danner.

I picked up the Mountain Pass as a lighter weight version of their full hiking boot (the Mountain Light). It has a thinner sole and a few other differences. I love the way they look, and while being kind of narrow they work for me. As a light hiker I think these succeed, but after a six mile hike on a lot of loose rocks, the bottoms of my feet really hurt. I will continue to wear these for a few more hikes and see what's what, but I'm likely to end up getting a pair of the Mountain Lights as well. As a light hiker these definitely work (I have probably 15 miles on average trails on them so far), but if you're in rocky conditions or for really long hikes, it might be worth looking at the Mountain Light's instead.

Almost returned them at first as there were places that rubbed and pressed into the tops of my foot. After about 10 wears they've broken in and take them on very long hikes. Super lightweight hiking book that can take a lot.
I'd also recommend:

I have about 20 pairs of boots from Red Wing Heritage, Wolverine, etc and hiking boots from Lowa, Solomon, etc and these are my new favorite “casual hiking” boot. They aren’t a true hiking boot IMO - I like lighter synthetic boots for that. But wow are they more comfortable than the heritage Made in America work boots like the Red Wing Iron Rangers and Wolverine 1000 Mile that need weeks of break in and have zero arch support or padding in the sole. These things are out-of-the-box comfortable with soft leather and amazing insoles. There also built like a tank. I’m sure they will last longer than I will. I’ve also had mine plenty muddy and soaking wet and never once did I get even a hint of moisture inside. The leather is treated so well I don’t think it even hit the Gore-Tex liner. And they also look amazing, especially the gunmetal grey. All around great everyday boot!

My husband loves these boots! They are a bit expensive but worth every penny. They are made in Portland, Oregon. They look great and are waterproof. These boots are an investment piece but they are certainly recommended!

These boots are very comfortable and true to size. What I enjoy the most about them is the stiffness they have in the soles. While hiking on steep terrain you'll be glad for this. I have other hiking boots that are very "bendable" and when i'm done hiking my feet are hurting too much from no support. These boots should last a long time, and are worth the comfort.

I have worn many boots military, hiking, and work. These by far have to be one of the most comfortable boots I've owned. I am a weapons instructor and stand in concrete for 8 + hours a day. My feet are no longer in pain at the end of the day. They are also great for all day wear and hiking. They are a great looking shoe that goes with jeans or khaki. I would highly recommended anyone who loves their feet to buy a pair of these. Fit true to size.

These are gorgeous boots! They have a rlatively easy break-in period, and waterproofing/support have held up on nasty, muddy, inclement trails.

Great boots! Took a couple times wearing them to break em in, but now they are super comfortable. They are good for camping, hiking (not super intense, but a nice day hike) or wearing around town. Bought different color laces as well so they look good with all sorts of outfits. All around, awesome boot. Great buy!

These are very nice boots. I got 3 compliments the first day I wore them. They are light weight and easy to get on and off. I have been looking for a black boot that doesn't look like law enforcement wears to work in. Sizing is correct and I wear a medium or "D" width as the EE concerned me a little bit. They fit me fine with a regular sock. I recommend for sure.

Not as advertised by Zappos. This product does not have Gore-tex lining and is not waterproof.
