I wanted a penny loafer that had an Italian, lower-profile. It had to work for casual, but not look like a clunky walking shoe. These have that look. They look great with jeans or a suit. I also wanted an American or Italian made shoe, not Asian. These are made in USA. My only reservation: they are very stiff leather. I think they're breaking in. But after being spoiled by soft Italian calf-leather shoes, these are a little harsh.

Tight through the arch. Thought it would loosen, it never did. The sole of the left shoe squeaked incessantly and could not be tamed. AE replaced the pair without hesitation. Good service.

The sole is already delaminating in front on one shoe. I am losing faith in Allen-Edmonds shoes. Have been a loyal customer through many Park Avenues and Waldens for over 20 years.

I had been looking for a penny loafer that I could wear with slacks or jeans. Somehow forgot about Allen Edmonds. Since I retired I am no longer wearing dress shoes. Still have two pairs of wing tips in the closet. Weddings and funerals. I was browsing loafers and these caught my eye also they were on sale when I bought them. I wear size 12d and these fit right out of the box. A little stiff but with all leather shoes they break in over time. You just have to wear them. Also I like the color a true dark brown just what I was looking for. Very quality shoe, leather lined, good sole and heel. Should last me a long time. My other AE have been with me for 20 years +.

Slight discoloration on top of each shoe. Paper stuffing missing from each shoe. a little too large to fit comfortably.

Shoes fit great. I average 10.5 but in Allen Edmonds I'm always a 10. Zappos shipped the shoes in a box with no packaging filler. Shoes came in a destroyed box (looks like it was run over by a lawn mower). There were no dust bags included which was disappointing. Shoes arrived fine. I give Allen Edmonds 5 Stars and Zappos 2 for just a poor delivery and missing dust bags.

This is a Day 1 review. I believe the other reviewers have talked about how stiff these shoes are, and I can't completely disagree with that assessment. I would say though that I anticipate they will break in fairly well over the course of the next month which is a fine trade off for me given that this style of penny and color is a hard combo to find (plus the AE quality). I also suspect that these will burnish nicely over time, probably following the first sole replacement. Out of the box, the leather does squeak a bit, but again it's Day 1 of the breaking in period. The toe box is generous even if the shoe is just ever so slightly on the narrow side (not enough to qualify it as narrow). That too will give once they are broken in. Overall, I would say go for it if this is a style you're looking for.

I own three pair of Allen Edmonds loafers - each a size 9.5 D and each is a very good fit. I initially ordered a 9.5 D Cavanaugh and could barely get my foot into the shoe....I reordered a 10 thinking that the style ran small but find that the 10 is much too large. Apparently, the sizing at Allen Edmonds has changed???

This is an outstanding penny loafer. The fit is just a smidge wide--which I like, I tend to wear loafers like sneakers; so this will fit looser than say an AE wing tip. High quality construction and it's lined.

Allen Edmond's Cavanaugh penny loafer is the best shoe for style, comfort and quality. It can be dressed up or down. I have worn Allen Edmond penny loafers for over 50 years and always been proud to wear them. I do regret that they no longer make the style in a C width or in cordovan leather.

Good looking loafer. However, the burgundy color isn't what I expected. It fits very comfortably with good cushion. No need to break in.

I see more than a few negative reviews of the Cavanaugh Penny. Then the company response is a simple "We're sorry". If quality is an issue, as several have said, what is being done to address the quality issue? Why do the shoes not run true to size? Customers who have complaints want more than we're sorry. They want accountability because of the hard earned money they have spent on your product.

I bought a sorely needed pair of loafers. I expected a more soft fit, but they are pretty stiff up front. Actually gave me a blister on first day of wear. I will continue to break them in, and I assume they will soften.

Lets call these shoes a 3-to-4 star. The only reason I went with 3 is the run a little slim for width D and quarter-to-half size small. The construction was built to last a lifetime, so if you are like me and expect your shoes to live a long and happy life then these are great loafers. However, the leather material is STIFF (maybe sturdy? But more stiff). I will have a tough time breaking these in so I am using some mild leather stretcher spray with cedar blocks. Penny Loafers should be comfortable, as the casual choice for professional wear. We will see how things go.

I am happy with how the shoes look but the shoes are too narrow and I find that my feet hurt while I wear them as well as the next day. My toes get very cramped in these shoes.

I haven't purchased Allen Edmonds in a very long time since my original Park Aves. Looking for a loafer, I recently picked these up during a sale. The shoes seem nice, leather looks good, but the sizing is completely different. They must have changed their sizing when they rebranded a while back becuase the size 9D doesn't fit anything like my 9D Parks. It's looks and feels like it's almost two sizes smaller. I actually looked to see if maybe they accidently put in a size 7 or 8 but sure enough, it was a 9. Both shoes are labled as "classic fit" and mention to take your regular size. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to an actual store again to get fitted for their shoes as they must have changed everything. So if you purchased AE's before the rebranding and want another pair now, I strongly suggest getting refitted becuase everything is not how it was.

A classic designed penny loafer, so then why was it discontinued? I was recommended a 12 B size, which was sold out, so I took a 11.5 D, not comfortable to say the least I just hope someday they get break in enough to be comfortable to walk around in... Why does AE discontinue classics like these, which should be a staple of the line?

Color did not match images on Zappos or at AE. Color was very light/yellowish. Also, front of last was not even; I would consider it to be a "second". Ordered an 11, 1/2 size up, but they were too large.
They were very comfortable, except for being too small/too tight. It is a quality shoe, but the sizing and color did not work for me.
In general, the quality of AE shoes are better than Florsheim, Cole Haan, J&M and Jack Erwin.
Pricing on Zappos is very good, as is the service.

This is my second bout with the Cavanaugh and I'm still not sure about it. A vamp on the first pair ripped (similar to leather dry rot) along the stitches after relatively light wear over the years. It cannot be repaired.
I wanted a high quality, US made shoe, so I decided to give the Cavanaugh another try. The new pair fits seems narrower that my other "D" widths. I assume that the Cavanaugh, like many slip-ons, will stretch a bit with use. But the common wisdom is that a well-fitted show should be comfortable from the start

Purchased a pair of oxblood Cavanaugh 4 months ago. I love the style and color of the shoe. I get numerous compliments with people asking where I got them. Only complaint is the quality. As I mentioned, I purchased these four months ago and wear the pair a handful of times a month. The soles are already worn out. I own other pairs of AE (all leather soles, no toe taps), but I've never had soles wear out this fast - it's unbelievable, the shoes aren't broken-in yet and I've already worn the leather through the stitching (sole has split). With that said, I would not recommend these as there are better penny loafers out there.

Great looking shoes that seem well made, but they are so stiff. I've walked miles in the shoes; I've had them stretched, but they aren't breaking in to any degree. I'm not giving up as they look great and were kind of expensive, but I am getting frustrated. I wouldn't recommend at this point.

I've bought Allen Edmonds penny loafers for years and less than a year ago bought a pair each of black and cognac Cavanaughs. Neither fits the way my previous pairs have and worse, the soles are already coming apart with just occasional wear. Not up to the usual AE quality.
