I'm an extremely careful consumer. I do my research and test several products before making my final selection. The Ruffwear harness is awesome. I have a Chocolate Lab and Queensland Heeler mixed breed dog. She has a slim physique and very thin fur. None of the standard harnesses were an option for our dog.
Because she's a strong puller, the Gentle Lead harness was dangerous for her. Despite the control it gave us when walking her and how easily she followed instead of pulling, it doesn't stop sudden instinctive lunges when she sees a bird or small animal. Some people have reported neck injuries and vet bills because of this harness. When our dog suddenly lunged after a squirrel, her neck badly torqued. It was awful to see. So we returned this harness and reluctantly bought the Easy Walk harness.
I say reluctantly because the Easy Walk harness is clunky with absolutely no padding, and it's rather heavy. It didn't immediately get her to stop pulling, but the straps cut into her skin, and although we watched videos on how to custom fit this harness, it seemed incredibly uncomfortable.
We forgot to remove the Easy Walk harness, and sadly she chewed threw a strap before we could return it to the store.
Then I found a review for the Ruffwear Front Range harness. I loved the color options, the soft but durable padding, and the front pull-ring and top leashing option, and the efficient use of materials. This is not a bulky, cumbersome harness.
I ordered an extra small and small, and ended up going with the small. She measured as having a 22" chest at the widest point, which is in between the two sizes. The extra small wouldn't even snap closed, so my guess is that if you're dealing with a similar size issue, choose both options or order one size up.
Fitting the harness was a bit tricky, but you'll find this with pretty much all of the dog harnesses. The idea, though, is that once it's adjusted properly and you've done a test walk, you shouldn't need to adjust the harness again.
The head cutout is a snug fit, so depending on your dog's head size you may have to fiddle a bit figuring out how to easily slide it on and off. But once it's on, it seems very comfortable, and the belly straps are easy to snap into place.
The harness comes with the straps tightened up as small as they will go. Loosen them all the way and put the harness on your dog. Adjust the neck straps first. These are easier to work with. The belly straps take some finagling to adjust, but I slowly adjusted them and figured it out, and now we have a happy dog.
To make her comfortable, I made sure I can easily slide several fingers under and around all straps. The one place where the harness is very snug is on her back. I wasn't sure if this was applying to much pressure, but once I readjusted the belly straps a bit, the entire harness fit better and she so showed no signs of discomfort when I let her run around the house.
Since pulling is a problem with our energetic dog (and we have struggled with the training side of addressing this), I attached the leash to the front chest loop and we went for a walk. She was calm and relaxed and responded to my commands. The harness made her incredibly easy to control. And unlike the Easy Walk harness, her movements were not restricted and nothing rubbed against her skin.
During the walk I moved the leash to the metal ring on the top of the harness and was surprised when she continued to walk as if it were still attached to the front. The placement of the ring is at the back instead of closer to the neck. This must nullify some of her pulling instinct. The ring's position gives me a feeling of control. My preference is the chest loop, of course, but I like having the option of being able to use either attachment.
Something else I like is the reflective piping, and the dark charcoal color looks great. We're going to write her name and our phone number in the ID area inside the harness, although I doubt anyone would remove the harness should something happen and she's found. It's a great backup just to be safe, though.
Compared to the other harnesses we've tried, I don't think she's going to be able to easily chew on this one while it's on. But since we only intend to have her wear it for walks, hopefully we'll remember to take the harness off when it's not being used.
So how's that for an unsolicited review? The belly snap closures are tucked up close against the harness material and can be slightly cumbersome to open (closing is easy), but they seem much more secure that way than the other harnesses, and after trying it a few times I'm now used to it and don't have any concerns.
I hope this review was helpful.

I absolutely love this harness. It is lightweight yet very sturdy, I bought the L/XL and from previous reviews I was worried it would not fit my Bullmastiff who is 115 pounds and big head, big chest, big neck but you can adjust to the largest size it fits perfectly and the hot pink is chic for my big girl. So easy to get on and off and she pulls less with this then regular collar. I wish that I bought this sooner. I always used prong collars to walk her but never again. I love this harness!

This is an expensive piece of dog gear. Is it worth it? Absolutely. The 5th harness we've tried for our dog, a 13# Havanese, it is the only one that allows a proper fit in both the neck and chest area (we ordered XS). Plus it is the easiest to put on and take off, hands down (or should I say "paws down?) of any that we've tried. Personally, I'm not crazy about the pink color, but my wife loves it, and so does our dog, apparently. With other harnesses, we often had to chase her around (the dog, not my wife) before she'd submit to the indignation, but she waits patiently for this one, probably due to the ease of putting it on and the comfort of the padding (more so than because of the color, I assume). And it exudes quality. If you can afford it -- and nothing is too god for Fido, right? -- go for it.

Terrific harness with very useful features. My 70 lb. pit bull wears it with the leash attached to the front, giving me better control of his desire to separate my bones. It's tough and can take a lot of abuse. Difficult to clean, but worth the dough.

I looked for this type of harness for a long time. This type does not require you to pull your dog's leg through, instead, the harness goes over the dogs head then under the stomach and up over the back to latch on top. It's perfect for that finicky dog that does not like its legs pulled and pushed. Great for a large dog!

We love this harness for our golden retriever puppy. We tried a couple other ones from the Pet store, neither were padded or easy to get on, this is both, and will definitely grow with him for a while.

Love this for my labradoodle - he is a leash puller (despite lots of time and money spent on training - his parents failed to be diligent!) and this prevents him from pulling! And it is a great quality product - sturdy and not easy to lose (we have lost other harnesses that are too flimsy, easy to misplace). Love this!

Finally! A harness that fits that my dog can not get out of. He is a Dachshund mix so he has a barrel chest with legs that are just a bit taller than your average sausage dog. This harness adjusted to the perfect fit and it stays put when we walk. The construction is great and very heavy duty and the clips where you can attach the leash are securely sewn on so you feel comfortable walking. Don't think I'll need one anytime soon but I would purchase this again in a heartbeat!

I love this product! Although it takes a bit of time to adjust it at first it is worth it. I like the 2 leash attachment points. I bought this for my 6 month old cattle dog and she loves it. We can now go on longer walks since it helps with her pulling, but unlike other harnesses it does not restrict her movement.

Ordered the small for my border collie mix who runs with me regularly. This is easily the best harness I have had for any dog. The padding is perfect and the control on the top center of the body is great; It's easy to adjust and very easy to put on. If you have a dog that gets very excited when he/she sees the harness (mine are like this), it's great to just slip it right over the head. If you do any sports or athletics with your dog, this harness is perfect and well worth the cost. I will be ordering another one for my other dog.

Great harness. I use this while hiking. My dog is about 45lbs but has a large chest so other harnesses are an awkward fit. This one is great because you can adjust the neck and chest. No rubbing and it's holding up well.

Do your research, then buy this harness. Padded, tough, good looking, and once properly adjusted it's safe, secure, and unnoticed by your dog. No restriction in movement, even when swimming...which my Lab loves.

What a great, well made harness. The sizing is accurate and doesn't rub in any areas on my dogs skin. I love Ruffwear products and highly recommend this harness for things like every day strolls to more challenging hikes.

Fits our 17 pound Coton de Tulear perfectly. He is crazy strong for his size, and can really pull. This harness makes walking him easier. This is the second we've bought. On the first one, the fabric tore where the metal tab is attached that you hook the leash to. It still works, but I didn't want him breaking loose. The second one has not had this issue. We throw it in the wash when it gets dirty or stinky, and it comes out clean and holds up well. I will buy this brand again if this one ever wears out.

I got two of these for walking my two dachsunds. They are very well constructed and easy to put on or take off. My dogs wear them every walk time, and other than a little schmutz from the low bellies going through sand and dirt, they look good as new.

This is a great harness that I have used constantly for almost 3 years. It has held up well and shows no signs of unusual wear. Even the plastic clips are in great shape. It fits well and seems to be very comfortable for my dog.

Very adjustable harness, our dog is the kind whose hair can grow very long. He needs a bigger harness when it's hugely fluffy, a smaller one when he's shorn short. This one can be used for either hair cut. He is 17 pounds and the extra small is the right fit.

I bought this harness after receiving a recommendation from a friend. I have a very strong, 70lb. German Shepherd and this works perfectly for her. Great fit and great quality product.

Wonderful, quality harness. I got this with the intention of using for in-town on-leash running with my pup. Super easy to put on and adjust. LOVE all the reflective piping so much we use it on our evening/night walks now that it's dark out. One note on size: My pup measures 15" neck, 25.5" girth, 22" from withers to tail. These measurements put him at a size small, however he's a lean dog, similar in build to a vizsla. The small fit but the belly plate was too short and rubbed behind his front legs. Zappos 5 star customer service helped me with an exchange and the medium fits great. (Ruffwear also has amazing customer service and actually snapped a couple pictures of their similar size dog in both sizes when I emailed asking about how the harness should fit!) The belly plate was about 2" longer from the small to medium. 15" neck is about minimum for a medium but the chest easily adjusts down well below the size range listed. Great product, great experience, and pup looks awesome in campfire orange!

This harness has exceeded my expectations. The best part is that it is so easy to put on and off. It is extremely durable, attractive and looks comfortable for my dog. I bought three of them several months ago and have washed them and used them about once a day and they look like new. You do have to be careful to make sure all the strap adjustments are correct as my dog did back out of it once. The straps that go around the body are easy to adjust; the ones around the neck take a little more time.

It's AWESOME! I ordered the large for a 60 LB Goldendoodle puppy. There is still some room to grow since he's 8 months old. It goes on super easy and I love that feature. It's comfortable on him without rubbing due to the great padding. I originally ordered the wrong size and they sent me the next size up before I returned the other one. Great customer service ZAPPOS! This is a great product hands down.
