I commute to work 14 miles round-trip 5 days a week on a Trek fitness bike. For biking shoes, I was just using some Basics walking shoes which were okay, but if the pedals or shoe bottoms got the slightest bit wet, or if I hit some rough spots in the road it was a challenge to keep them on the pedals. Others had recommended I invest in clipless pedals and shoes, but I was fearful of the "training" period, forgetting to unclip at a stop light, and falling over. I did some more online research and read where some commuters like myself were wearing Five Ten shoes because of their sticky bottom. I couldn't find anyone locally who carried Five Ten shoes to get a close-up view but Zappos had them and on sale too. I pulled the trigger and ordered them and received them in about 10 days. My first reaction was they look great and appear to have a solid build. The stiffness of the sole is like a steel toe work boot with little flex but the insole and uppers are well-cushioned and comfortable on the foot. The sticky sole is audibly apparent when walking on a solid surface like linoleum or laminate flooring but not on concrete or asphalt. The shoe's stiffness would exclude it from being a comfortable shoe for walking around the neighborhood or mall, but that's not what their designed for. On their maiden voyage, I noticed right away that the shoes had a firm presence on the pedals. When I hit rough spots on the ride where my Basics would normally bounce off, the Five Tens kept their place. I haven't tested them in wet conditions yet but I feel certain they'll do the job. As for fit, I wear a size 10 dress shoe, so I followed the rule of thumb and went one size up for the Five Tens. I also wear a wide width, so it was a concern being these only come in a medium width. However, I knew with Zappos return policy I could easily send them back. Thankfully, the medium width turned out to be generous and the size 11 was spot on. If these were court shoes, I might have gone up to an 11.5 for the extra toe room, but again they're a good fit for their intended purpose.

TL/DR: Canvas model breathes much better than leather model, and these run a half-size small so order up 1/2. Super-grippy on pedals! I normally wear a US size 11, but an 11 in these was a little bit small. The 11.5 fit me much better. I prefer wide-width shoes, but can still wear medium-width if a shoe isn't available in wide. These are medium-width and they are fine, but if they were offered in wide I'd totally go for those instead. Regarding bike pedal grip, I am highly impressed. This is the first pair of Five Ten Freeriders I've owned and I'm totally a believer now. These things gripped the flats on my MTB super well. By the way - the canvas version of the Freerider breathes MUCH better than the regular leather Freerider. I had first purchased the regular leather version, but after wearing them at home for ten minutes or so my feet were hot. I decided to order the canvas version to compare. I stuck my hand down into the toe of each version and blew towards the toe of the shoe to compare how much air flow each had. With the leather version I couldn't really even feel any air on my hand, but with the canvas one I definitely could. So back the leather ones went and I kept the canvas ones.

The rigid (or, at least, more rigid than in regular shoes) sole make these much more comfortable for riding.

These are great sticky bike shoes. They are stiff for biking, so not the best casual shoe. I wear an 8 wide. The 8.5 was too narrow and I had to move up to a 9 and they fit fine.

As usual with the Five Ten line, they're comfortable straight out of the box. No break-in needed, shoot, they even come laced up! These are well-built, true to size, durable, and protective. The soft-rubber sole grips pedals like a python grips its prey. Super stylish, super durable, super performance; I LOVE these shoes! Never has a pair of 5-10's let me down. If you haven't experienced a day of riding in some premium ppe like these, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND THANK ME LATER!

The Five Ten Freerider Canvas grips well, feels comfortable for all-day rides, and looks great off the bike. Just keep in mind that the canvas upper isn't the best for wet conditions.

I got a great deal on the Freerider Canvas shoe. I have used my previous pair of five ten shoes for the last 3 years Mtn biking and am amazed how well they have held up to serious Enduro and DH riding. They are still in good shape but I couldn't pass up the chance to get another pair. These are not the most serious hard core shoe five ten makes but a great compromise for comfort, traction and style. In fact this color combo looked so good I am using them for a casual shoe for a few months before I get them dirty. Highly recommend for quality, style and performance.
