Beware of the Quicklace system on the Salomon X Ultra 2, because it can injure your foot. Salomons usually fit my feet better than any other brand, and I have enjoyed the convenience of the Quicklaces in the past, but the Quicklaces on the X Ultra 2s pass thru their metal eyelets with almost no friction. That means that as you step the Quicklaces move around like a pulley system to equalize the tension. If you stretch out the laces above the foot while lifting your heel, then the laces near the toes immediately contract in reaction. If you are going up an extremely steep hill then your heel will lift out of the shoe at the same time as the front of your foot is being crushed under your own strength with the power of a tourniquet. On my first hike in these it felt like my metatarsals, which should lay side-by-side, were being bunched together like pencils in a rubber band. Deforming the bone structure of the foot, while causing excruciating pain and a dangerous loss of stability, is a big negative for me. I had to cut the laces (vs walk home in my socks) and re-lace them, passing twice thru each eyelet to hold them firm and stop the pulley effect. Surprisingly, this worked great and I actually love these shoes now. However, do not buy the X Ultra 2s unless you are willing to tinker with the Quicklaces (traditional laces will not fit thru the eyelets), or risk a debilitating foot injury from a sloppy-fitting shoe. Salomon's Quicklaces need to slow down.

This is my second pair of Salomon GTXs. As an avid all-weather daily trail runner, these shoes are unparalleled. The support can be felt from the tread up into the shoe. Unlike other brands that use waterproofed leather or mesh with a waterproof liner, these are constructed out of Gore-Tex and are truly waterproof! Having a pull cord instead of laces makes for quick adjustments on the trail. If you are an all weather runner, a Gore-Tex Salomon is essential gear. See you out on the trail.

I do agree with the first review. The lace system does not work very well on these shoes because they slide too easily. The shoe does constrict the metatarsals quite badly. One other thing, because of the Gore-Tex, these shoes are very hot to wear during the summer. Overall good shoe but be aware if you have wider feet, they won't work.

I brought these shoes 2 months ago for dog walking, they were very comfortable straight out of the box and a good fit and have used them everyday. The lace system is brilliant push toggle down to tighten and they stay done up no more forever retying laces for me. Haven't used them in heavy rain yet but waterproof on very wet grass. In all excellent shoes.

This shoe has great support. I have high arches and I'm used to having to get inserts for my shoes, but out of the box I wore them for a day. I'm also on my feet all day for my job and my feet felt great all day long.

I've owned a pair of these for well over a year now. While I have owned similar shoes from Northface & from Merrell--these have held up much better.

I purchased a pair of these shoes after co-workers advised that they were better than other hiking shoes/boots. My co-workers are all 10+ year military and law enforcement veterans and have worked and hiked all over the world. I've worn these at work and on the trail through all four seasons and they are by far the best I've worn. I walk two to three miles a day while working plus walking the dog and hiking on the week ends. They keep my feet warm and dry or cool and dry. And after ten months they still look and feel brand new.

I love this product. I've had several pairs of them and they are perfect. Fit, comfort, durability, weatherproof all great. I especially like the 'quick-lace' feature. Makes getting getting in and out of them (which I need to do often during the course of a day) a breeze. Brilliant.

I have owned two other Salomon trail shoes, one without GORE-TEX and one with it. The choice of GORE-TEX was not for the waterproofing feature but because it prevents fine desert sand from entering the shoe while hiking. Without GORE-TEX, fine desert sand can fill the shoe without any noticeable feeling. These shoes are quite comfortable although I did notice a very slight and occasional pinching of my right little toe. It did not develop into a deal breaker. I wear these shoes for using a treadmill and for an exercise class. I also wear them as a general walking shoe during my daily routine. I think that they are ab excellent choice for both trail hiking and general walking.

These are my husband's third pair of Salomons. The first time he tried a pair on, he fell in love, walked them right out the door. He has other shoes, but always choose these the wear. They meet all of his needs.

I purchased these shoes for my husband for Christmas. He needed a pair of shoes to wear in the winter and these shoes are warm, waterproof and have great drip on winter roads (packed snow). I purchased a pair for myself a couple of months ago and love them so much I got him a pair as well. He said they feel true to size and are very comfortable. We both love the quicklace system.

These are the best trail shoes I've used in many years. I broke these in for a few days prior to a backpacking trip. The toe box is roomy. The sole is sticky and aggressive. Recommended though I wish it had traditional laces.

These are great shoes. Excellent quality and workmanship with comfortable fit. The speed lace system is nice and efficient for quickly putting them on. The shoe has good grip without feeling heavy and is probably better suited for cooler and water climates.

Wearing these shoes is like walking on air for me, with one caveat. First I must say that I generally have to wear a 10.5 in hiking, running shoes. In this shoe a 10 is very comfortable, so, big toe box and my toes not hitting the front at all. Nice! I like more support in the arches and feel that I get plenty, no insert needed, even though I had counted on getting some. However, wore them on a 6 mile walk, not even a hike, and the laces are so slick inside the eyelets, that they work more like a pulley (Collin H. had written that on a review on Zappos). He is exactly right. The laces are so slick, that as you move your foot while walking the upper part gets a bit more space (feels like it is loosening) but the laced section closer to the toes is tightening. Not a good feeling. I kept having to make loosen the laces as the area between the bridge of the foot and toes started to really hurt. It was clear that if I could keep the laces from tightening on the bottom, because of the ease of movement of Kevlar laces through metal eyelets, these shoes would cause me to hear little angles singing as I walked. So I got a new Salomon quicklace kit for $8. Went on YouTube and watched the process to put a new pair on. Now, you must know, I am not necessarily handy and kept reading all the review that it was tough to do. It is not! Just follow instructions from YouTube and it is a snap (okay maybe two snaps). So I fixed the "tightening" problem by wrapping the new lace through the bottom eyelet twice. That went beautifully. Tried to do it again for the second eyelet but it is too tight to fit through it twice, so I just "made a knot" on the second from the bottom eyelets, at desired tightness, and it stays just fine. The rest of the lace I bring up as normal. Amazing! Love these shoes with this little adjustment (and remember, I am not really handy!).

Excellent shoes! I did not experience the problems indicated by other reviewers. My experience has been very positive. For me these shoes offer good support, great comfort and very effective and convenient lacing system. I have worn Salomon shoes for years now have yet to get a pair I did not like. I have slightly narrow feet with low arches and these shoes work great for me. I will continue to buy in the future. Highly recommended!

I have regular to narrow feet so this shoe works great for me. I did not notice the same effects as some of the other reviewers however. I also have the xa pro 3d's and they have the same lacing as the ultra's. I've been wearing salomon shoes for 10 years now and the ultra's are my shoe of choice. I find they have the best tread and support that i look for in a trail shoe. you definitely need to try a pair out for yourself. i think the ultra's are hands down the best shoe. especially in the goretex. always leaves my feet dry and safe from muddy conditions.

Initial positive impressions - Appear to be well made. Comfortable. Water resistance good. Good traction. Too soon to evaluate durability. Other observations - The Quicklace system is an answer to a question I never asked. It is quick to tighten or loosen shoes. It holds well. On the other hand, it takes me longer to tuck the slide and extra laces in the elastic pocket provided, so it's a bit slower than conventional laces for me, at least so far. I have 3 pair of Salomon shoes/boots. The lugs on the soles of all 3 are very perpendicular to the shoe. There's no taper. As a result, they really hold dirt, sticks and pebbles. It's no problem while walking or hiking and doesn't affect performance, but it does guarantee you're going to track dirt in the house if you don't remove them outside.
