I have tested this shoes under various conditions. Note that I wear professionally made orthodotics and am 67 years old. 1.excellent when used to walk all day for multiple days in urban settings in Europe 2.very good for casual day hikes in Austrian alps 3.excellent for jogging on trails through the woods 4.very good for walking up steep mountain trails--not rock scrambling 5.not so good for walking down very steep hills (think black diamond trails but no snow) because they provide minimal lateral support 6.very good for trail jogging in Bear Canyon (Tucson) but not as sticky as low hiking shoes for running up and down the rocky parts of the trail and crossing streams on rocks. Breath very well and dried quickly after I slipped into the stream. Overall- light weight (good for packing) ; stylish enough to wear with black jeans when going out to dinner; breathable; and versatile for casual hiking and trail running. Soles could be stickier.

This shoe has a solid hold on your foot. The shoe is light and fast. The rock protection is as good as the Ultra Raptor. The shoe size is the same as others in the La Sportiva lineup.

tl;dr: GREAT rough conditions trail running shoes; the pull strap pulled off of mine after 6 weeks
I live and trail run in the bay area, specifically the Oakland Hills. Our terrain is very steep and we have seasonal torrential rains, the result is that virtually all of my trail running is on steep trails with very poor footing - rocky, rooty, rutted trails with very little flat even footing. I think of it as ankle breaker terrain. I've always preferred running in trail shoes made by mountaineering companies vs trail shoes made by running shoe companies, and I'm always seeking a very stable shoe. The Mutant really ticks all of these boxes. It's a great shoe, with a tight fit that increases stability. If you read the reviews there's a lot of talk about the shoe's tongue, what this amounts to is that in combination with a nice lacing system (which uses slippery plastic eyelets which allow you to easily cinch up the laces), the shoe really does wrap around your foot and and create a solid fit, somewhat similar to a climbing shoe. I've been running these in the winter during the rainy season on rocky trails, and true to the advertising they offer great traction.
It's worth mentioning that the lace pockets are a little weird and require you to tie your shoes on the side of the shoe vs the center of shoes, but once you figure that out and get used to it, it's fine. It's a good system and keeps the laces tidy.
All of that said I ran less than 60 miles in these. As mentioned, they are a tight fitting shoe and are made with a big fat pull strap at the back to pull them onto your foot... well mine pulled right off. I talked to both Zappos and La Sportiva, both are willing to take the shoe back but neither have my size in stock at the moment, I'm really hoping that they get new stock in quickly as I want to keep running in these things.
Fit: I'm an 11 in virtually any shoe, 45 fits just right in these.
Lastly, these were not in included in Zappo's "Runlimited" program, but I connected with Zappos Support before wearing them and they agreed to extend the same 30 day guarantee. I needed that becase, as mentioned, they're a tight fit and I couldn't figure out, without wearing them a few times, whether they were just right or too small.
These would be 5/5 stars if the strap hadn't pulled off of them.

Best running/scrambling shoes on the market. I use these for scrambling the flatirons in Boulder, CO and it's the one shoe that does it all, especially on slabby rock. Out of the box, the rubber is not as sticky for scrambling, but wear them in after a few runs/hikes and the rubber only gets better and sticker as it wears. It is no surprise that over 50% of the other serious scramblers I see out there are wearing the same shoe.

Bought these for my fiance and I've never seen him so excited waiting for them to come in the mail... he wanted a shoe that he has not seen on anyone else..they arrived today and he loves these. He mentioned the arch fits perfectly

Have tried so many shoes (and spent way too much money) on finding a great trail and mountain running shoe. Trying to find something to work with my foot (narrow heel, normal to slightly wide forefoot), something that has great cushioning but isn't so soft that the midsole collapses on fast, technical switch backs, and mountain trails, and something that has great grip, especially on wet rock. Enter the la sportiva mutant. This shoe fits me so well, and if you have a similar foot shape to me, and run on technical trails, would highly suggest trying it out. Have done runs up to half marathon distance, but have absolutely no hot spots or blisters so far. Can't wait to take it on longer runs. Only con would be the weight, which is on the higher side of trail shoes but runs much better than the stated weight. Would check it out and hope la sportiva keeps it in production! Also as with all my la sportiva trail shoes, would recommend going up half a size form your normal size.

A 6-1 210 and with flat feet this shoe is the best all around trail running shoe I have found. The 10mm drop is ideal for hilly terrain and reduces stress on the achilles. A little tricky to put on/off but that's no deal breaker at all

Just took these out for their first run and there is a lot to compliment. The tongue design is incredibly comfortable; lace pressure is evenly distributed across the top of the foot.
The ride is consistent and soft while still allowing you to feel the ground through the shoe.
Also, I went up a half size from previous La Sportiva's (I think the wildcat?) and the fit is perfect.

This is the bomb! Perfect fit, AMAZING traction (wet, dry, pebbly, rocky, slick), great stability (the heel has just enough width, but doesn't overdo it), and the lacing system wraps the shoe on my foot as though it were a glove — my foot doesn't slide around inside while running technical paths. Happy; a go-to shoe for fell/mountain running.

I love these shoes. They are super comfortable, they just hug my feet. Tread is excellent in wet and dry.

For everything from long days in the mountains to moderate scrambles on rock, this is the go to shoe. The Mutant is super durable and can withstand a tremendous amount of abuse, everything from scree surfing to river crossings. The grip on the shoe gives you a scene of security on steeper terrain, I've trusted this shoes on many 4th and 5th class routes across the Rockies. The shoe is also extremely comfortable with enough cushion for long days out and comfy enough to forgo socks!

I went through 4 pairs of Mutant and will likely continue buying it for as long as it is available. Mutant is highly dependable and can handle a variety of terrains, from snow and mud to rock screes and scrambling. This is my to-go shoe for longer distances on real mountainous terrain. It is a bit heavy but protective. I've run distances up to 40 miles in Mutant and had zero issues at the end.
As most La Sportivas Mutant runs a bit small. Most of my running shoes are US 11.5, but for Mutants US 12 (EU 45.5) works the best.

This is THE shoe I reach for when I'm doing my long distance sufferfests. I've done huge mountain peak linkups feature technical scrambling and long, off-trail approaches. Mutant features my all-time favorite lug pattern on its outsole that seems to stick onto just about anything from muddy trails, scree, or slabby climbing. This is the one ALL-mountain running shoe to rule them all.

This shoe thrives on rough terrain but I find it so comfortable I use it my every day shoes, too. The Mutant is flexible enough to feel really agile while still providing great protection. The tall lugs and sticky rubber provide outstanding traction. I love the wrap around toungue design. You never have to worry about it sipping to the side and it helps provide arch support and securely holds your foot in place. My only criticism is that the midsole is a little firm for running on hard surfaces (pavement).

The Mutant has been the shoe that I can do everything in. If I can only take one pair of shoes on a trip, this is them! Good cushioning, great traction, good support, and comfortable upper. Following many years of trail running in the old La Sportiva CrossLites, I was worried when the CrossLite was discontinued, but found that the Mutant was definitely a superior replacement.
I recently ran across the Akshayuk Pass on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic that included running across rugged terrain with river crossings, ice, snow, marshy bogs, scree and glacial moraine. The Mutant exceeded my expectations in these harsh elements, where I don't think any other single pair of shoes could.

This show is great but the sizing is bonkers. I usually take a size 11.5 or 12 US but in this show I take a 46.5 EU which equates to a 12.5US

I have been running in La Sportivas for about 4 years now and this is definitely one of my favorites. Along with the Akashas this would be my pick for running on any technical trail where I want my shoes to be grippy, protective, and feel like an extension of my foot. The lacing system on the Mutants is what really separates them from the other sportivas I have had. It fits really snug and feel great on your foot. The trails around where I live in CO are technical and still fairly snow covered and these shoes do great on those conditions. Really looking forward to the seasons ahead with these shoes.

We've had a ton of rain this year in NC. The trails behind my home are constantly wet and muddy and these shoes are perfect for it. I've put miles on my mutants soaking wet and caked in grime and they always perform, keep me on my feet, and keep my feet protected on rocky and heavily rooted terrain.

I love these shoes, they have a good drop for me and work in running conditions across the board. I bought them to be a solid trail shoe but they're so comfortable I end up wearing them all the time, even for trips around town. Two issues though, the toe cap did start to peel off pretty quick, but I got some shoe goo and restuck it and now they're good as new, also the fabric on the back heal loop Ripped when shoving my foot in one day but that was probably my fault. Seriously though I'll buy another pair after these even with those issues!

I have never had a shoe that was as durable as the Mutants. Mountain races, technical running and scrambling--I've put these through the wringer and have more than 500 miles on them. They are just starting to separate a little at the toe. These shoes fit well right out of the box.
I did notice that the rubber the bottom is not as good as the contragrip rubber. They seem to struggle in wet terrain, especially wet rock.

Probably the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned. I use these for long approaches that don't have too much off trail terrain. My feet feel great after 15+ miles of walking. I have noticed some separation near where the rubber at the toes meets the mesh. I do put them through a lot so I'm not losing sleep over something minor like that. The comfort levels more than make up for it.
