I pretty much read every review I could find on both this original back adjustable Hunter boot and the Huntress trying to decide between the two. I am 5'1" and my calf measures 16.5" so I knew it would be iffy for both of them. I ordered 4 pairs (2 different sizes) of each the Huntress and Original - I'm keeping the size up in the Huntress - plenty of room and a much better height for a short girl (original hit my knee). Also the original wasn't built for short legs - the part that widens was too high up for my leg, I needed it about 3 inches below where it started to fan out to fit in them (hello cankles). Width was great in both but the Huntress was the clear winner. I just wish people put all their measurements in when writing reviews! I hope this helps someone else.

I have spent months trying to find a pair of Hunters that would work for my larger calves. One thing that drove me crazy in my research was reading vague reviews about the calf sizing, so here is my very detailed review re: calf sizing. MY calf is 17" around. With the buckle unfastened, this boot expands to approximately 19" at its widest point at the top of the shaft. However, at the bottom of the gusset (about 10" up the shaft from the arch), the shaft circumference is only about 15". I am able to comfortably wear skinny-legged jeans inside the boots with the buckle fastened to allow the gusset to expand about half-way. (As far as foot size, I would normally wear a 9.5, so I ordered a 9, and it's a bit big.) The look of the boot when worn is definitely not a "traditional" Hunter boot look on my leg. From the front, the boot looks a little tighter at the top, which makes it look a little saggy near the ankle. From the side, the gusset sticks out a bit in the back. From the back...well, there's no missing that gusset. I think it would look much better on a smaller calf if you could tighten that buckle more. If you're going for function, then the look is not big deal. However, let's be honest--if you're paying $158 for Hunter boots, you're probably going for that Hunter "look." (You can find perfectly functional rain boots for a lot less than that.) Overall, I'm undecided whether I'm going to keep these.

Absolutely love these boots! I ordered the tour boots originally but sent them back due to limited room in the calf area and they were difficult to get off. I wear a size 7 shoe and I ordered the 7 boots. They are a little big, but its the perfect size with thick socks. I have plenty of room in the calf to fit any type of pants. I am 5'1 and have no problem with the height. They hit me just below the knee and have never bothered me when walking or sitting. Wore them in Boston during early March with wool socks and my feet stayed warm. I'm now using them in humid Mississippi. Love the versatility! I never leave reviews, but I was very weary when I ordered these boots (especially because of my height)so I hope this will help some of you scouring through these reviews like I did. I love love love these boots! - and I do not recommend the fleece boot socks. Just get a pair of wool socks.

I love the look of tall hunter rain boots, but I've never been able to wear them due to the fact I need a wide calf boot (16.5" is my calf measurement). Finally, I found the adjustable back boot!! I think this will fit you if you have up to 17" calves. It is snug on me with leggings, but looks and feels good. As far as sizing, I normally wear a 9.5, so I ordered the 9 and the 10. The 9 fit fine if I was going to wear the boot as is, but I prefer to put the Ugg insole in them. With that inside, the 10 fit perfect, so that is the one I kept. (I highly recommend the fuzzy insole... makes it so much warmer and comfier!) As far as color, I got the 9 in the glossy and the 10 in the matte since that is what was available at the time I ordered. I almost sent them both back in favor of the 10 in the glossy, but after doing some research I decided to stick with the matte. The glossy looks great out of the box, but from what I read is harder to keep clean, and eventually the gloss finish wears off anyway. (I don't know if this is true, just passing along what I read.) I've already worn them a few times and love them. There is one spot on the heel that started to rub, but I'm hoping that will go away as I wear them in. (It was only after the first day wearing them for 6+ hours.) All in all a great purchase!

I am a newbie when it comes to rainboots. I don't exactly know how they are supposed to fit. What I will say though is that THIS BOOT IS GREAT FOR PEOPLE WITH BIGGER CALVES! Since I had never bought a pair of rainboots before, I didn't really pay any attention to the circumference the first time I tried to get a pair. They were Kamik, and looked very similar to this pair--except it was so tight around my calves! I am a pretty athletic person who loves sports and the gym, and am in pretty good shape and well-proportioned; but I never thought my calves were bigger than usual. I wanted to keep them, but there was no way I'd be able to wear them. So I was back to square one. Not only did I have to deal with having big feet (size 11), but also BIG CALVES AS WELL?! So I did my research and managed to come across these boots. I cringed at the price though, and told myself that this would be a last-resort purchase. And as you can see...it came to that. I was skeptical when I got them, but I put them on, AND THEY FIT AROUND MY CALVES! They seem to be very loose, though, especially around the ankle, but I'm suspecting that is just the way rain boots are supposed to fit (?). I just recently relocated to upstate NY, and they say the winters here are FIERCE (lasting from October until May, and has even been colder here than the North Pole before!!) Think of Boston weather, but worse. Hunter was a brand that was highly recommended to me, so I knew I could trust these boots. They also say that if you just purchase the fleece liners, they could double as snow boots! (Can you say two for the price of one?) I have yet to wear them out yet, but I look forward to trying them out. Hopefully they are comfortable and I get used to the fit. Overall, I DEFINITELY recommend them, especially if you find yourself having the same problem about boot circumference.

I normally wear a 7 1/2 and ordered a 7 in these. They fit just right with regular socks. I mainly got these to wear at the boat ramp getting our boat in and out of the water. Needed some tall rain boots and these were tall enough. I have normal to somewhat narrow calves and there is plenty of room for my skinny jeans.

I'm in love. Finally, I found the perfect Hunter boot for my larger sized calves. My calves measure 16.25" around at the largest point. As I go down my leg, between my ankle and largest point of my calf, I measure 13", and then down to 9.5" at my ankle. I have a pair of the regular original in black glossy but since I've gained weight they don't fit around my calves anymore. These boots fit perfectly and I love how you can adjust the width of the calves on the boot if needed. I have a good 2-3 inches more to play with if i need it. There is room in the ankles but not too much. They fit perfectly with leggings, jeggings, and my skinny jeans. I debated between these and the Huntress, but decided to go with these because the Huntress boots are only 13" tall. I did not want to sacrifice the tall style of the Hunter for my big calves so I was so excited to try these. I am 5'6" and the measurement from the bottom of my foot to my knee is about 16.5 inches. These come up to about 0.5-1" below my knee cap.... perfect. Totally on trend. I bought a size down as I knew from my purchase of the original tall Hunter (non back adjustable) that these run super big. I normally wear between an 8.5 and a 9. Usually a 9 in flats. I ordered these in an 8 and they fit perfectly, even with thick socks I still have room to spare. These are not too narrow or wide, as I don't have wide width feet, but my feet are by no means narrow. They're very comfortable. I also REALLY like the matte black color. When I opened the box I was so excited because they are so pretty, and you could really feel and see the quality. Totally worth the price (I would have even paid more). I live in the midwest and these will be perfect for the rainy, wintery days. I've already worn them in the snow and rain and my feet stayed dry. To keep your feet warm in the fall/winter you will need warm socks though. I normally don't write reviews but, for my fellow wide calf ladies out there who struggle to find the perfect fitting boots, I couldn't wait to spread the news that these are completely worth the buy!

I was given the original tall as a gift but they were a little too snug in the calf. I exchanged them for the tall adjustable style and the fit in the calf is perfect, loose with leggings tucked in and not adjusted tight, so with socks they should be really comfortable. I wear a size 8 1/2 shoe so I ordered a size 9. They are a bit big but an 8 would probably be uncomfortable on my one size 8 1/2 foot! (The other is an 8). I put some nice thick inner soles in them and I expect to comfortably walk along the shore in colder weather now.

They say three times is the charm! First I tried the Huntress, which, while fit and was a good width, ended at the widest part of my calf. Not the most flattering. Next, I tried the Hunter Original Tall. I could get it on, but almost had a heart attack trying to get it off. The shaft was flush against my pants, and created a rebellious suction when I tried to pull them off. These Hunters are the only ones that went as high as I wanted (right below the knee) but still had room for my calves and pants. Also, I ordered a full size down and that worked perfectly. I can still fit chunky socks.

OK, if you have a larger calf muscle these are THE Hunter boots for you. They can easily accomodate up to a 17" circumfrence calf at the top of the boot. I know because with pants on that's how large my calves are. So disregard the information above about the dimensions of the boot. Now, how do they compare to the: *Huntress* Compared to the Huntress these boots are taller (same as original) and slimmer in the ankle. They also have a less cushiony footbed. But generally look more polished. However, I'm 5'7". If you were shorter, I'd suggest thinking about the Huntress because they are shorter. *Original Wide* Compared to the Wide shaft version of the boot, these are the same height and slimmer in the ankle. As other's have said, no real reason why wider calf = wider ankle, but they do. So if you have a wider ankle, then perhaps try the wide shaft version. Or if you just don't like the look of the expansion at the back try the wide shaft. Otherwise, I think the slimmer ankle makes for a more polished look. Both the Wide and the Back Adjustable have the same amount of padding in the footbed.

I needed a pair of boots for walking around the beach while not in my fishing waders. I liked the boot and with the adjustable back, it fit my calves and the jeans. I liked that it didn't look big and floppy and that they were tall. They were tall like my LLBean Wellies that after 35 years I needed to replace. I could not keep because it was too difficult to get in and out of, tight across the ankle and had to cross my legs to pull off with both hands. Crossing legs is a little hard for me after the hip replacement of 2 years ago. I have larger calves (17" with jeans) so most other boots including the Bean won't fit. I had ordered 3 styles: this, the Hunter Original Back Adjustable and Hunter Huntress. Wound up selecting the Huntress.

My calves were about 15 inches and i certainly did not fit into the original tall boots. these however are a pefect fit!! its a tad bit larger but i dont plan on wearing them barefooted so with thick socks its perfect fit. i havent worn them outside yet but i did wear them inside and they were comfy. i wore them with my leggings and thick boots socks, its warm boots are perfect height (im 5"3). i was going to get the wide ones but so happy i got these!!!

I love everything about these boots, except when I have to take them off, so I couldn't give it a 5 star rating overall. I have relatively short legs and big calves and it took me a while to find high boots that fit. These are very comfortable to walk in. I have taken long hikes in them, even in deep snow, no problem. It is a struggle to take them off, though. Maybe there's a technique to it - I welcome any advice. My husband had to help most of the time, but I am keeping these (and my husband).

Too narrow around the ankle- nearly impossible to get boot on/off without someone else to help you. Leaves a bruise around the front of your ankle- even when the boot is a full size larger than your shoe size. Just a poor design.

The boots fit great! Others have complained that they are hard to remove and I'll agree to that BUT, if you are traipsing through mud you might not want them to come off very easily. I have large calves and appreciate the wide leg. I suggest that if you want to tuck your pant leg inside the boot, you stuff your pant leg inside your sock first. ;-)

I originally purchased it in my normal size 10, but had to exchange it for a size 9. The size 9 fit my foot and 17.5 inch calf perfectly. Thank you Zappos for making my exchange quick and painless!!

Well now I know why these boots are so popular! I am 5'4 and they come all the way up to my knee but not so far as to prevent me from bending my knee. They are super comfortable and very well made. I have an average size calf and they fit loose unless I adjust the back. I think they would be fine for anyone with larger calves. What was particularly nice was the packaging complete with royal seal. Would highly recommend these boots to anyone needing rain/snow boots.

Very happy I decided to get these! I was worried about hunter boots not fitting my very large calves (just over 18"), but with the help of someone else's review stating that if the strap is open completely it's about 19" I decided to give it a shot....figured I couldn't go wrong with Zappos free returns!

Love these boots! I am a curvy girl with big calves so I always have issues with rain boots fitting my calves. However, with these boots I had no problem. They come right up my calves with plenty room to spare! Also, there is no bunching at the ankle which is also a usual problem for me. The quality is also very good. I hope to have these for years to come. I highly recommend these rain boots especially for people who have issues with rain boots not fitting over their calves. The price is worth for me because of the quality and fit that I cannot find anywhere else.

I am almost 5'11 and I have pretty large calves. I love the adjustable backs, and they land just under my knee cap. The are slightly difficult to get on, but with socks, it was easy. I wear a size 11 so I got the 11, and it is a little big, but if I wanted to wear fluffy socks it would be perfect! I recommend the boot buffer spray (at Nordstroms) to clean these beauties!

I finally found Hunter's that actually fit my calves! I can't stay enough good things about these. Love the matte black color. They are pretty tall, I'm 5'4 and they almost hit my knee caps. Very comfortable and the adjustable back left enough room to get in and out with ease. Highly recommend!

The boots were cute and comfortable when on. Unfortunately, I have wide feet which means that putting the boots on and taking them off become extremely difficult so I had to return them since it just wasn’t practically having to struggle to take them off which meant I would most likely not wear them.
