I searched the world over (all on the internet, of course) for a pair of snow boots to replace my now 10 year old North Face Greenland boots. Those boots came a size too small for me, had always been tight, but were the most capable boots I had ever worn at keeping my feet in the perfect state of warmness, even in a foot of snow for over three hours. Too bad they were also pretty ugly. After much debate, I tried a few pairs of boots from different online retailers. Wished afterward I would've gone 100% with Zappos because paying $6 or more to try on a pair of boots I don't want to keep is not something I want to keep repeating. I really wanted to like another pair that were cute and trendy and didn't make my feet look like Navy air craft carriers but they simply weren't warm enough. I've been wearing these for two hours and although I can't say they are as warm as my old Greenlands, they are definitely the warmest I've tried on yet. The D-ring lacing system is nice and fast, although a zipper as an alternative entry would be the ideal. These are loaded with cushioning - so much so that I'm incredibly glad I sized up because they never would've fit otherwise. If you're the sort of person that needs to feel the ground even in snow boots, these are not the boot for you. There's a space boot feeling due to the cushioning. Because they are so warm, two pairs of socks aren't really necessary so the extra room to accommodate them isn't necessary either, which is great because I would be sized out of the women's version of this if I had to go up yet another size. Are they attractive? Somewhat. They look exactly like what size they are, and at having sized up to an 11, they look somewhat masculine. The fur at the top of the boot and at the cuff has that dirty old teddy bear look and will no doubt look quite worn with extensive use. My old North Face Greenland had real sherpa fleece at the top of the boot which of course never looked dirty or worn. There is some ankle flex to these, which is rare in a snow boot and they seem sturdy. I have no doubt they will keep my feet mostly toasty in the snow, which is mostly what I was hoping for.
I'd also recommend:

Like others on this site, I wore these boots only for limited use snowshoeing. When they are not on my feet, they are indoors where it is not too cold, hot, dry or damp. The plastic toe simply split during a recent snowshoe hike. Based on the numerous complaints about the defective materials used in this boot, it is clear that TNF knows about this issue. Are they doing anything to adequately compensate customers? Anything short of a full replacement is insufficient regardless of the warranty.

When you pull up the women's Chilkat 400 boots on their website, a bold graphic on the page touts The North Face's "LIFETIME GUARANTEE," and says "Our products are fully warranted against defects in materials and workmanship with a lifetime guarantee. Exclusions apply*. See Details". You have to click through to the details to learn that the very product isharing the page with the "Lifetime Guarantee" badge is itself NOT covered by that guarantee. It is only covered by a one year warranty.
Why put the Lifetime Guarantee badge up on any footware page, if it isn't offered on that product? The warranty badge on footware pages should read "One Year Guarantee," to be completely forthcoming.
Why does this bother me so? Because I have a previous incarnation of the same boot that has completely split from side to side. I thought this expensive boot was covered by a lifetime guarantee, because I never clicked through to read the exceptions. That's my mistake. But, it is a mistake I'll never make again with North Face - because I believe a well cared for and lightly worn boot should not split open. If it does, the company should stand behind their product - which North Face apparently doesn't. So disappointing.

Can not wait for winter and ski season - these boots seem to be very warm. The insulation is thick and the boot is very soft. I ordered a half size bigger than my normal shoe, and these felt comfortable after wearing them only a short time. They feel a bit heavy at first, but that is expected because they are winter boots. Nice look and color (white and gray) - I plan on wearing them at the ski resorts, sled riding, and any other winter activities that come our way. Very pleased with the boot and it is the quality I have come to expect from North Face.

I loved these boots until the rubber section broke off after a few years. Very warm, but the warranty should cover more than a year. For that Resson I can not recommend these!

Purchased both the women's and men's version of this boot. The upper rubber portion on both pairs literally broke apart while walking in the snow. North Face would not cover replacements. Basically they just hid behind their one year warranty period - shocking! Therefore, if you plan to keep your boots over one year I highly recommend NOT to purchase these boots.

I bought these boots to wear to Iceland in the winter, and they worked great. I normally wear a 9, but bought a 10, because I wanted extra room for warm wool socks, and it fit perfectly. These boots are so cozy and warm, it's like my feet were in a little warm blanket. Very comfortable, and would highly recommend.

This is my second pair of these Northface boots. My first pair lasted me about 5 years, before I really had to replace them. Given the price, 5 years was actually rather disappointing but I think I contributed to the excessive wear on my last pair by wearing to work and leaving them on all day in a job that had me moving about and bending a lot. It definitely wore on the boots in some odd points. Anyways, had to replace them and was so pleased with the warmth and performance (dry feet, no slip grip) of my first pair, that I came back for more. These are an updated version of the pair I loved, and so far they’ve performed just the same. My feet stay dry, warm and I don’t slip on ice or snow. I feel comfortable and confident wearing these in my MA blizzards! Will probably continue to wear these boots as long as Northface makes them. Too bad they don’t offer their lifetime guarantee on footwear!

Based on other reviews, I ordered a full size up with these, which felt ok tromping around my house, but after a day of actual outdoor use, I wish I would have only gone a half size larger, since they are a little big. More room for socks/toe warmers, I guess.
I bought these primarily for winter biking, so good ankle mobility for pedaling was important, as well as water-proof and warm. These fit the bill well, and my toes stayed toasty on a 10 mile ride yesterday afternoon. The soles have decent traction for walking and the lugs aren't so tall that they reduce grip with my bike pedals. The gaiter d-ring on the toes, and ridge for snowshoes makes them versatile, and I know that my ice cleats will fit easily for dog walking when conditions require them.

This is the 6th pair of boots I ordered (thank you Zappos for your return policy). I wanted something warm enough to shovel, stand around at ski club, etc and these are perfect. Super warm and cute enough to wear around town in the winter.

In Maryland, a pair of year ago, I have purchased a pair of Baltoro Boot 400, and used very occasionally.
Trusting NF quality i carried the boots to Cervinia (Italy) to use for walking, after skiing.
After 2 hours walk on snow, one boot was totally destroyed, the rubber cracked in several pieces and the top unglued from the bottom.
I own many NF items and, in general the level of quality is good , but this boots are a total disappointment.

I am a VERY loyal Northface customer. The toe box on these completely shattered. Will not be purchasing a new pair from Northface. What a disappointment.

Bought these boots, and the first time I wore them, I walked 100 yards in 45 degree weather. The toes on both boots completely self destructed. I looked down at my feet, as they were cold, thought there was snow, (which there was none), and found the white was the interior boot insulation. These boots are completely worthless, and I will find a replacement brand that hold up to light walking.
Disappointed I,

have had a pair for a couple of years, worn perhaps 8 times at the most. recently took them on a short snow tromp (like 200 yards) and the rubber toe box just shattered, broke apart exposing the white felty underlayer. a 1 year limited warranty does me no good. on line posts with similar problems are met the comment from n.f. that you have to wear them a lot, they were not meant to be "stored." very, very disappointing. don't even want a replacement pair, who needs a boot you can't count on to maintain it's bootlike qualities, just when you need it the most, i.e. in the snow?

I have the older version of this boot. Had then for about 2 years - only worn a handful of times and stored in cool, dry closet when out of season. Yesterday, I was wearing these boots as I was stranded on the highway during the blizzard that hit the northeast. The entire front of the left boots molded plastic/rubber part cracked into several pieces then continued to split the entire length of the side of the boot. I was completely disappointed as you spend good money for what should be a good quality boot to only end up with a cold wet foot! Time to find a new pair of boots and not north face this time.

These boots are the most comfortable for my feet. I picked the right size and I am ecstatic about wearing these to Alaska in November. I bought these specifically for this trip. I have to have my feet comfortable and warm or else the rest of us miserable. This is my bucket list trip to see The Northern Lights! I can wait to take these boots with me!

Love these boots! Due to a lack of snow in Wisconsin, I have only been able to wear them once to a snowy swim meet, so I haven't been hiking in them yet. They look fabulous and feel great. Happy with my purchase!

Living in Colorado requires sturdy and warm boots that hold up well to lots of use. I have had a previous version of the Chilkat for over 10 years and decided to upgrade. The old boots were still very serviceable and probably would go another 10 years. However, the ice sensitive sole was getting less grippy and the lining was pretty packed out. So..I decided to get another pair. These boots are warm, comfortable and just keep on trucking along. Would definitely recommend these to anyone who needs an exceptional pair of snow boots.

I ordered these boots a half size bigger based on the reviews I read and they were right! I typically wear a 9.5 but ordered a 10 and they fit great! The best part about these boots is that there was NO BREAKING IN period where you can only wear a few hours at a time before your feet hurt or something is rubbing/irritating your feet. I put these boots on from day 1 and wore them all day/night without a single issue. THESE BOOTS ARE PERFECT in every way. I highly recommend.
